"Goliath" Impression

I went to watch "Goliath" by Poetic Theater Productions today and I was blown away. Going in, I didn't really know what to expect. I had watched the Youtube preview before, and the play seemed intriguing. I was quite excited to snag a spot in the theater, which turned out to be quite small. By the time 8:10 rolled around, it was packed full of people. Reading the biographies of each actor/producer/director helped me appreciate the different walks of life that each actor/actress came from. What really struck me the most was the diverse ethnic groups that made up the cast. I had come in expecting a cast full of Asian American actors (because my Asian American studies teacher suggested I come, so therefore the actors/actresses must all be Asian American too, right? Wrong.) Anyways, before the actual play, two veterans stood on the stage and read poetry about their experiences in war and its effects on their lives. I never realized how much female soldiers suffered because all I hear about are the male population of veterans. I'm glad that I got to hear their poetry, as not only did it give a voice to the female heroes of our country, but amplified the struggles of veterans to assimilate back into a "normal" routine of post-war life.

As for the play itself, wow. The story about the solider "David" was told through the eyes of his father, mother, wife, friend, sister, and David himself. I loved hearing the different stories, and it all revolved around what shaped David's character, how he changed after the war, and how war doesn't just affect a soldier, but also the lives of his/her family and loved ones. It seemed quite fitting that the main character's name was "David," and the play itself "Goliath." What I took away from this play is that soldiers, especially males, sometimes go off to war for reasons that put them in danger. We expect males to "be men" and "fight for their country" and "stop being pussies" and in general, soldiers are taught to ignore emotions, thoughts, and morality in order to become cold killing machines. They go off to war to fight a "Goliath" to prove something such as masculinity or that they aren't "gay," but in reality, the real Goliath is back at home. For me, I interpreted this as the Goliath within ourselves. We are each fighting our own battles, right? We are each trying to prove something/ prove that we ARENT something. Either way, we place ourselves against an opposing force to display our strength. And while it's great that we try to stand up against the "big giant," we should be doing so in order to benefit ourselves, not to prove something to others or please them. Goliath could also mean the inner demons that we struggle with, such as depression or a personal problem. For soldiers, I suspect that their Goliath can come in the form of PTSD or trauma received during war. In the end though, maybe we are all like David. Maybe we are all A David, someone who was born fighting and will continue fighting. What exactly are we fighting for? For the David in the play, he wanted to keep fighting in order to figure out the purpose of all this warfare, of all this "dirt" on his hands, of all this bloodshed. And a final thought to you, what keeps you going in life? What are you fighting for?
