2” x 2.5” x 2” 12 rag mat board panels, featuring 12 pages of the prayers of the rosary and 3 pages of supporting text, hand set in 6 pt. Century Schoolbook and printed on Zerkall Frankfurt Cream, mounted on burgundy end sheet paper (leftover from the For Dust I Am books); and one giclee print of an original analogue/digital collage featuring song bird egg drawings by JoAnna Poehlmann divided between 9 panels; linked though 48 grommets with copper jump rings; and covered with copper plates embossed by Gwen Youngblood and patinated by Nan Marshall; held tidy with a leather strap by Ashley Neary. Limited edition of 11 copies.

#Feathursday: Wisconsin Women in the Arts 

This #Feathursday we are showing an exhibition catalog found in the collection of the UW-Milwaukee Center for 21st Century Studies (UWM AC 070, box 2, folder 3)

In the fall of 1972, the Center for Twentieth Century Studies and the UW-Milwaukee School of Fine Arts sponsored a week-long symposium of women in the arts. In support, the UW-Milwaukee Union Art Gallery planned a special exhibition of painting, sculpture, drawing, and print by selected artists. It was titled “Wisconsin Women in the Arts” and was held from October 23 – November 15, 1972.

One of the artists on the selection committee was, Ruth Muehlmeier. She created the ink drawing for the cover of the exhibition catalog; a group of anthropomorphic birds bringing their artwork to the gallery. Muehlmeier was born in Milwaukee and attended the Wisconsin State Teachers College, which became UW-Milwaukee.  

Some of the artists selected for the exhibition were:

Emily Groom who had a 55-year connection with the Milwaukee-Downer College, another predecessor institution of UW-Milwaukee

Milwaukee artist JoAnna Poehlmann whose art is in collections around the world including Special Collections at UW-Milwaukee

The well-known children’s book illustrator Lois Ehlert

Multiple award winning visual artist Evelyn Patricia Terry who has work in multiple public, private and corporate collections. You can see some of her artist books in Special Collections at UW-Milwaukee

Mary Theisen-Helm, who was the director of the UW-Milwaukee Union Art Gallery from 1972-‘75

Elsa Emile Ulbricht whose involvement with the Works Progress Administration (WPA) is documented in the papers held at UW-Milwaukee Archives

Staff Pick of the Week - Hare’s Foot Notes

Mad as a March hare. Here in Milwaukee looking out over the snow, and the frozen lakeshore, I can’t help but look forward to spring. Right now rabbits are still huddled under the pine bows concentrating on staying warm and not thinking of the procreative process that inspired the phrase, mad as aMarch hare. Spring must come eventually.

Alison’s staff pick this week is the small artists’ book titled Hare’s Foot Notes: a compilationof quotations from the stamp collection by JoAnna Poehlmann. The marbled paper of the cover is bright and makes me think of the coming spring blooms. On the accordion folded pages are stamps that feature leporidae including Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit, from Great Britain, The Year of the Child commemorative stamps, 1979. There is also a stamp from Panama featuring Albrecht Durer’s Young Hare.  

JoAnna Poehlmann is a Milwaukee artist, she works in a variety of mediums and shows a distinct love of nature and art history. Artist books are just a part of her creative expression. She has an exhibit on now at RedLine Milwaukee until March 21, 2015.

Dog eared II / [designed by JoAnna Poehlmann]

I am not usually a fan of 'dog eared' pages, but I will make an exception for this item! Each page features a hand-drawn ear from a different type of dog, each identified on the opposite page.

"Dog eared contains 14 hand colored lithos color copied, cut out & attached to strathmore paper with chamois cover and kozo end papers"--Colophon.

This is part of a continuing series featuring pet minis in conjunction with the of the new pet themed exhibit that is now up in the reading room. This particular item is from the corresponding mini exhibit, put together by Rachel, so make sure to take time to see that wonderful collection as well, for more fun finds like this!
