As we start our last weekend of the #pnb1617 season I can begin to say farewell to my roles for this #picturesatanexhibition program for @pacificnorthwestballet • Saturday night will be my last performance of Alexei Ratmansky's, Pictures at an Exhibition. I'll admit it there was an extra added pressure knowing that the role that was choreographed and tailored for NYCB's formidable Sara Mearns 🙌🏽 With everything I dance though, once I learn the steps I try to get a sense of the person it was created on by studying, and then I add my own personal spin (no pun intended 😜). Each time I perform this piece I learn a little more about a lot of things within this layered work. A little more about Ratmansky, a little more about the ballet, its music, a little bit more about myself... etc... This was probably the most difficult of the three ballets in this program only because I am not familiar with Ratmansky's work. My body is still searching for what he intended in certain steps, and I'm almost positive it will continue to do so the next time it comes around. This past week at PNB we gained another company member, April Ball from @lesballetsdemontecarlo , who will be guesting with us as my Fairy Godmother for both weekends of Cendrillon ✨April was once a Principal dancer with Boston Ballet and Suzanne Farrell ballet and has been with BMC since 2004. The role of the Fairy is what April was taught in her audition for BMC, and she's been doing it ever since --13 years! It's not in PNB's culture to have guests, and seems to be the norm in other major ballet companies, so I'm grateful to see this unfold here and pray that it happens more. I can't tell you how much it improved my dancing to see other dancers and companies outside of this realm when I left PNB in 2008. We are so fortunate to have this veteran of Jean-Christophe's works among us! A rare moment captured in today's rehearsal of Cendrillon with #brunoroque , as he gave me some coaching on the Fairy Godmother 🤓 Bruno and I shared many years together traveling, dancing, and learning the "language of Maillot" with @lesballetsdemontecarlo , and are now fortunate enough to share studio time again in a different aspect.
