couture week: adeline andré

in a rather startling twist on the usual haute couture presentions, awash with luxuriating appointments and lollipops with sticks found in a cache during the rococo era (and offered to us exclusively by the house in question), french designer adeline andré eschewed all that, stocking her s/s 2011 runway with friends, of varying ages and physical beauty (as defined by the fashion industry).  of course, if couture doesn't set one off best, they don't have much hope, do they?

the designer previously worked for christian dior, founding her namesake label in 1981, and became part of the couture syndicate in 1997.  the collection she presented was full of simple, lovely silk dresses that came up for a second turn on the runway paired with pullovers that looked almost budget in nature, juxtaposed between the likes of dior & chanel, but for that, had a certain charm that can't be phased out by others offering more money.  after all, can you take home part of the set with you?

npr's review of the show came with a knowing smile, a little amused, but surprisingly respectful all the same; "One of the spotlights went out halfway through, and the show dragged on longer than the 15 minutes the slick mega-productions — with their thumping soundtrack and stomping models — usually last.  But the whole thing was so earnest and touching that it put people in a good mood and many left smiling — a rare event in the brooding world of fashion."

although she presented some basic, pretty ballgowns in pastel shades (below), the show triumphs were in the slightly avant numbers shown on a very different sort of model than the one we've become accustomed to (above, top).  not only were the clothes gorgeous, but they challenged the viewer to put them in the context of the real world, something fashion shows are loath to do (it generally takes away from the fantasy & after-show impulse orders).  yet it belies a confidence, a strength in the collection that doesn't need feelings of recaptured youth to shill.  and that's, in the end, sexier than anything, isn't it?
