Retrospective 2023

Like last year, long image below, with the text of the image under the Read More. You can find all the mentioned works or relevant links on my pinned post.

The format for this retrospective will be similar to last year, save for the image design (it's good to switch it up a bit). There will be a lot, so I'm making it digestible again :P

The goal for this year was to:

Get things off my desk and shelf it for good.

Because I had too many ongoing WIPs and games whose state I wasn't completely happy. I also wanted to avoid creating new projects (if I could stop myself) to focus on those projects.

As the infographic above shows... I didn't really manage either? I've shelved a couple more projects (Goncharov Escapes! mainly) but also added many more titles to my name through the comps and jams happening this year.

On the plus side: I've finished stuff!... by making tiny IF bites xD - I think I've achieved a new level of understanding of SugarCube through making the Guide, the templates, and experimenting with it. - I also tried a handful new IF programs (Adventuron, Ink, Binksi/Bitsy), which makes me want to try other programs - there are a lot of fun ones out there!

More importantly, I think I made last year one of my best game so far: DOL-OS. I was pretty happy with it when I submitted it to the Concours (and won first place!!), but this remastered version really made it into something I am incredibly proud of. I don't know if I'll ever make a game this good - I hope I do. Anyway, go play it, peeps.

This new year's expectations are fairly similar to last years: finish the WiPs, shelve remastered version, and update the large projects. Hopefully The Trials and Tribulations of Edward Harcourt is MelS gets back his free time. And if time/frustrated, make a few short bites. I'm also going to continue organising jams (@seedcomp-if currently, and with the @neointeractives) and review more IF games (esp covering jams) over at @manonamora-if-reviews.

American Chestnut Trees: Lost Giants

I knew the blight that killed off American Chestnuts when my grandparents were young had changed the face of the the country. Chestnuts were an abundant, natural food source all up and down the Appalachians and Atlantic seaboard.

I just didn't realize how frickin' huge they were, or how widespread.

"Once, the springtime canopies of western North Carolina forests were an unmatched floral display, thanks to a tree that nearly vanished,” Nickens wrote. “The American chestnut rose 100, sometimes 120 feet above the loamy forest floor. Most were nearly barren of branches [ie no knotholes, good for lumber] for 50 feet or better. … These were massive trunks, some 16 feet in diameter. And they lorded over the forest. In most places every fourth tree was a chestnut. … All told, perhaps 4 billion chestnut trees grew from southern Maine to Georgia, and they put on a pageant. A starburst of pearly white catkins tipped nearly every branch of the massive trees. Each catkin was nearly half a foot long, streaking like a comet’s tail against the dark surrounding foliage. In the spring, you could stand atop ridges and watch the white flowers roll like surf for miles.” — quoted in Memory of great forests – and hope for restoration by Kathy Ross

According to the article linked above, not only was the chestnut harvest a major source of food and lumber, prized for its long, straight growth and light, rot-resistant wood, but its heartwood was so dense it could match compressed lumber without treatment, an environmentally costly process today. Likewise, the American paper industry had to pivot quickly to find some other fast-growing wood to replace it.

I grew up in the woods and fields of Pennsylvania. It's hard for me to fathom a completely different forest where oaks and maples, giants at a couple feet across, were not the main trees of a mature forest, but mere incidentals to a completely different, massively-pillared hall.

There have been attempts ever since to revive the American Chestnut from the root systems of not-quite-dead trees, which survive underground where this fungus won't go. It kills saplings after they sprout.  A few scattered survivors plus a Chinese species that proved blight resistant now offer hope, via cross breeding and testing, that the species can be revived from extinction.

Unusually for me, I feel almost intimidated at the idea of these behemoths on the loose again, in a way i've never felt camping in wolf or bear country. They would terraform the woods I know into something vast and strange and deep, if they could ever achieve the stature of old-growth trees again. But that's as it should be. I'm sure eastern forests are struggling in ways we don't realize with such a central pillar of the ecosystem removed.

*MAJOR TOTK SPOILERS BELOW THE CUT*

I was anxiously awaiting this game from the moment it was announced. I 100% completed BOTW, including Kilton's monster medallions and full armor upgrades - literally all content except for the sword trials on master mode - and I played and enjoyed AOC, so I was so so so excited

Now that I've finished the game and have had a few months (lol) to reflect on it, here are some of my impressions/reviews for things that stuck with me, aka a long list of what i did and didnt like. (I only did the main story and a couple of key save-my-wife-related side quests, so this isn't about all the content in the game.)

First, things I liked:

Regarding gameplay: the final boss fight was so much more fun than BOTW's. I liked that it combined a massive boss like Calamity Ganon with an actual humanoid boss similar to older games, plus the fight against the demon king was very cool. I especially liked the fact that he could dodge Link's attacks the same way Link can dodge his, but thank God he can't flurry rush lmao. (The last stage I'm particular was VERY cool.)

It was really funny to me how in the last phase of the fight, if you get down to one single heart, his attacks become SO much weaker, so you're basically guaranteed to not die lmao

I liked how the sages could actually follow you around as you adventured! That was fun and cute.

Related to that, it was kinda nice how they prepared you for that fight throughout the game by making you learn his moveset ahead of time

Speaking of sages, the temples were fun and their final bosses were cooler than the ones in BOTW. The lightning temple was especially cool - that final boss was creepy and made me think of Mothula, whom i know from A Link to the Past and Oracle of Seasons

Actually I think one of my favorite experiences in the whole game was going to Gerudo Town without talking to anyone about what was happening, and therefore finding ruins full of what I briefly thought were actual zombies of the Gerudo, and then running around the town looking for survivors and finding absolutely nothing (until i finally found the main entrance to the sanctuary embarrassingly late). That was legitimately terrifying.

another favorite moment was descending to the final boss - that was pretty unsettling too, especially when I hit the bottom floor of the huge spiral staircase and got the pop-up about the power of the sages being gone.

regarding specific mechanics: I actually really liked the weapon crafting. I thought I would hate it, but figuring out strong combinations and going out to hunt down strong monsters for their parts was fun. I felt like a genius when I managed to create a weapon with 120 attack lol

for the story: the master sword quest!!!!!!!! so good.

Purah!!!!! I loved her change in personality throughout the calamity trilogy, I feel like it really reflected her age and the state of the world. in AOC, she was a super spunky and brilliant teenager, and in BOTW she was basically a 4yo, so having her back to being 20, but now having literally 100 years of horror with her friends, family, and all of hyrule suffering hanging over her, she's way more serious and subdued. She's also clearly scared and worried at Zelda still being missing, which I think speaks to how close the friendship is between all three. idk, I have feelings lol

PAYA 😭😭😭😭😭

I did like how much different it felt overall as everyone recovered from the Calamity. That was nice.

and last but not least: ZELINK CANON ZELINK CANON ZELINK CANON

Now for things I didn't like:

I didn't actually like the shrines very much this time, even though the puzzles were more interesting than the ones in BOTW. that might just be fatigue from doing ~250 shrines (main save file and master mode) in the first game, but I found them tedious. once I had enough stamina for the master sword and enough hearts for the sage of spirit quest, I stopped doing them.

the temples were better than the divine beasts, but I still would have preferred more extensive dungeons. (Worth noting that the games I've played other than the two most recent are Link to the Past, Oracle of Seasons, and the original LoZ. I briefly started OOT and Majora's Mask, but didn't finish either of them, so i dont have a comparison point for recent 3d games.)

I felt there was a lack of continuity specifically because of the sheika shrines/towers. Did they ever explain why they are gone now? Did they disappear into the depths during the upheaval? Even the divine beasts are missing! I feel like at the bare minimum, Robbie or Purah should have mentioned something, let alone the second gen champions who literally already piloted them.

This is my hottest take, but: Zelda could have stayed a dragon. Don't get me wrong, I love her and am thrilled Ultimate Wife Guy Link got his wife back, but I don't like when stories undermine their Great Sacrifice(tm) like that. Keep in mind, I also think Byleth should have died in FE3H's Crimson Flower route and that the Silver Snow route is a more powerful ending if you don't meet the conditions for Rhea to survive. In stories about sacrifice for some 'greater good,' I am simply not a happy endings person.

All in all, I had fun! I felt much more invested in the story and hurrying to rescue Zelda because I felt so much more attached to all the characters, so I think that was a massive improvement.

Hi Sam! Another sailing question for ya. I've been a few months out of college now and thinking about doing some entry level sailing work while I figure out what else I'm trying to do with my life, and I've seen a couple of west coast deckhand/educator jobs with VERY varying pay. One in WA provides training and is offering $1300/month + room and board, which is a LOT more than what i was expecting -- do you know if the higher pay is due to the additional educator responsibilities? //pt 1

//pt 2 // Another one closer to me in San Francisco is offering $350/month with room + board for a deckhand educator, though with higher preferred qualifications as well as wanting a basic safety training cert. I looked it up and a course can cost over $1k, so I was wondering if that's usually a requirement or just a preference? I'm not too worried about having to do education since I've had experience teaching recreational classes, but I'm more worried about the other logistics. Thanks!

Adding a read more link since this gets a bit long and discusses my wages:

Alright so! I can really only speak from my own experiences, so do take this with a grain of salt, but here's my thoughts. Regarding wages, they can vary pretty wildly based on what a boat does, and whether they're receiving tips for it. A schooner doing luxury sunset charters is probably going to make a lot of money in tips, for example, while a boat that takes students on educational sails almost certainly will not (and a lot of educational programs operate on a shoestring and donations, which further limits things). My guess is the varying pay might reflect that, and potentially pay more if you can't expect tips? It could also, like you say, have something to do with the educational skills involved; I haven't worked on a ship doing educational sailing myself, so I'm afraid I haven't got a solid handle on what you could expect for it on average. But if you do end up contacting them, I'd ask about tips, and also if the second boat would cover the cost of the course. Frankly $350/month seems WILDLY low, especially if they expect you pay for a course worth THREE MONTHS OF WAGES out of pocket. I've had ships require CPR/First Aid training, but the owners paid for the crew to take it. I've never personally encountered a ship that required an expensive course like that out of pocket.

Although I haven't worked educational sailing, I can share what I've made in previous years on windjammers and daysailors as a baseline, in the hopes it's helpful to see what other areas of the industry pay:

Windjammer at $400/week + tips ($100-300 per several-day trip), bed and board

I've heard of other windjammers with $120/week (very low) and $250/week, and tips as good as $700/trip, depending on how 'luxury' the boat sold itself as, and how willing the captains were to encourage the passengers to tip as they left.

Transit/daysailing at $250/week plus tips (we only did one sail a day because it was the shoulder season, so tips were about $40/day, on the days we worked) plus bed and board

Day sailing at $50/day, plus tips (usually $80-$120/day in the summer? A very good day was over $200; a memorable bad one - one sail with cruise ship passengers and then rained out - was $6. I did the math one year and it all averaged out to about $10/hour over the course of the season) plus bed but NOT board. Returning crew got a raise of $10/day for each year they came back.

Day sailing at $60/day + tips (usually around $80), and a guarantee of going home with at least $120 total, so if we ever got tipped less that $60 we got the difference in our wages. No bed or board, but also much shorter workdays.

That's all obviously personal experience, but I hope it helps a little! (I know it's also fairly underwhelming across the board lmao, although I've personally found living aboard helps a lot - not having to pay rent in a popular tourist destination port town goes a long way towards making up for the low numbers).

So as y’all know, if ya don’t there’s about 2 years worth of posts on my blog where I’ve talked about this, we’ve been dealing with a violent and dangerous situation with our neighbor and shady ass slumlord of a property manager.

TW:: Some of the audio might be triggering to anyone who’s been in a violent situation — also broken glass and yelling — Here’s a link to the Instagram highlight I made with all the “tea” on it (as it relates to what we’ve been dealing with these last few months; but it’s just the tip of the iceberg for what’s been going on since late 2019), including video and audio clip proof of my neighbor’s violent and dangerous behavior.

We’re trying to move asap! Unfortunately, after my 99’ mercury mountaineer was totaled last October when someone hit it from behind at a red light, we spent all our savings (plus the insurance money) on the beetle. It was definitely worth it. We needed a car so my boyfriend could continue his chiropractor appointments and we could stop wasting $50 a ride on cabs to his work. But it completely dried out our savings. So we are back to living paycheck to paycheck (as I’m sure a lot of you can relate to as well). This means coming up with $1,400 to move is almost impossible for us to do in a timely manner.

We don’t have time to wait. Our property manager has made it very clear that she isn’t concerned with our safety. She was on speaker phone with our other neighbor when she [our upstairs neighbor] was threatening us at our door (watch 4th story on the highlight I linked) and she [our property manager] claimed that there was nothing she could do about it. We emailed her the day our hot water was stolen and.. she did nothing about it. We emailed her the night our neighbor swept broken glass, trash and cigarette butts onto our patio.. and she did nothing about it. She refuses to evict this woman despite her being violent, dangerous, a disturbance to everyone around her and, being complained about multiple times by multiple residents.

I have chronic pain (fibromyalgia) and a compromised immune system; so working a physically labor intensive job, during a pandemic, isn’t an ideal solution for me. Despite this I’ve applied at 120+ places, I’m just waiting for a call back. I have an Etsy shop, and I’m a freelance crochet artist. I make enough to survive but not enough to save. I’m also trying to slowly chip away at the $20,000+ of medical debt I’ve accumulated over the last 8 years. My boyfriend is a dance teacher but he’s also applied for a part time as well, even though he doesn’t really have time and he’s still recovering from the accident. These part time jobs won’t be forever, we’re just trying to get anything we can to save money at this point. Even if it compromises our health. At this point, living where we live now, our health is already going south; especially our mental health.

I’m just trying to move. Affording to actually live in a new place isn’t obviously the problem (as we live in our own apartment now; and the rent at this place is actually cheaper than the market value rent of our current place) it’s just there are so many costs to moving that paying rent + bills + groceries + medications + debt + other essentials leaves no room for actually saving to move out. There’s security deposit + first months rent + a deposit to get electricity turned on + cost to switch internet to new place + uhaul rental. It’s a lot.

Madi's Meanderings vol 4

I was forced to take both of my days off this week. I checked multiple times a day to pick up extra shifts and none were listed.

I hate that.

I don't do well on off days.

As if that wasn't bad enough I was determined to keep busy both days to prevent the downward spiral of depression from setting in.

I didn't make it.

Luckily, I was able to fight it off on day two of my weekend.

But day one was a disaster.

I had loose plans for the day (a big mistake) and everything fell through.

I intended to get some golf ⛳ practice in during the morning.

Except I told Alexa to shut off the alarm and went back to sleep an additional four hours.

So much for the morning. Ugh.

Then I planed on going to the Orlando Icon Park and taking a ride on the Wheel. But the Groupon I had for the ticket expired yesterday. Ugh.

So, I checked the Castmembers website at work and our passes were not blocked out for the day. Yeah!

I also checked the Hollywood Studios reservation status and some were available! Yeah!

Unfortunately, the My Disney Experience Application had issues linking my Castmember pass to the reservation and would not allow me to secure a park reservation. A couple of hours later I gave up fighting with it. Ugh.

So now what?

Cry. Miss my wife. Overeat. Desperately text her and tell her I miss her (which I certainly do, but I know she doesn't want to deal with it). Cry some more. Pray I get the new strand of Covid and die. Cry even more. Go to sleep.

Pretty typical day in the Downward Spiral.

Thank goodness I had a doctor's appointment early today.

At least it was a reason to get the heck out of the house.

Since I was already about half way to Daytona Beach I came up with a plan for after my appointment. I decided to play a 13 hole par 3 golf course I had always wanted to try, then go look at the ocean and have some lunch by the beach.

So that's what I did.

The golf course was the "Oceans Golf Club" and was perfect for the shaky condition of my game. The holes were between 50 and 120 yards long so I got lots of practice with my irons. Plus lots of short game practice as well.

Got off to a rough start with two quick doubles. But settled in after a nice birdie. Shot just 5 over the last 10 holes with 1 more double.

It was nice to be out there again. Even if it was on a short course.

I am always reminded how much I love the game when I'm playing it. It's just so difficult at times to make it out there.

But I swear to do just that more often.

After the golf it was time for a late lunch.

I chose a restaurant on a pier just a few miles away called " Craby Joe's Deck and Grill".

It was really good!

The restaurant was over the water and you could see the surf below your feet inbetween the planks of the floor. All the windows were open and a nice cool ocean breeze made a nice accompaniment to the sounds of the waves.

I had a simple meal of Clam Chowder, a Three Cheese Grilled Cheese Sandwich with fries and a soda.

Kayla, the server was very friendly and had an interest in my work at Disney.

I then took a walk along the beach and tried not to think about how much I wish Cyndi (my wife) was there with me.

I obviously couldn't not think about that but I tried my best not to dwell on it. As I sometimes do.

After awhile it was time to take the short 90 minute (plus traffic) trip back home to get the laundry done and do the weekly grocery shopping.

If the weekend taught me anything about myself it's that I need hard, concrete plans in place to get me moving. Loose plans don't work. To easy to let those slide and dissappear into The Spiral.

To many visits to that Spiral and one day I may not come out.

💥What is the superiority inbuilt in an F-16 fighter?

The chief designer of the F-16, Harry Hillaker, considered F-16 superior to F-15. As per Hillaker, F-15 wasn't a technological advance. In his words : "There have been debates through the years about just how much technology should be incorporated in any design. The real issue isn't technology versus no technology. It's how to apply technology. For example, the F-15 represents a brute-force approach to technology. If you want higher speeds, add bigger engines. If you want longer range, make the airplane bigger to increase the fuel capacity. The result is a big airplane. The F-15 was viewed as highly sophisticated because it is so big and expensive. In my mind, the F-15 wasn't as technically advanced as the F-4." By comparison the Hillaker team on the F-16 went the other way : "The F-16 is much more of an application of high technology than the F-15. We used the technology available to drive the given end, that is, or was, to keep things as simple and small as we could. Our design was a finesse approach. If we wanted to fly faster, we made the drag lower by reducing size and adjusting the configuration itself. If we wanted greater range, we made the plane more efficient, more compact." The F-16 had its origin in the decline in the loss-exchange ratio from ten-to-one in the Korean War to 1.5-to-one in the early stages of the Vietnam War. The U.S.Air Force response was to launch a program called the Advanced Day Fighter, which set out to develop a 25,000 pound fighter with a thrust-to-weight ratio high enough and a wing loading low enough to maintain a 25 percent superiority over the Mig-21. This was the time that Colonel John Boyd developed his theory of Energy Maneuvrability which demonstrated the need for agility in fighter aircraft. Specifically, the theory stated that fighter aircraft should maintain their energy as much as possible in changing direction. This, in turn, allowed a pilot to get inside his adversary's decision-making cycle, which Boyd termed the Observation-Orientation-Decision-Action loop, or OODA loop. These are John Boyd's observations on winning in Aerial Combat and F-16 answered most of them : 1. Surprise the opponent without being surprised - better situational awareness - ability to super-cruise 2. Outnumber the enemy in the air. - lower purchase cost, without losing qualitative edge - lower operating cost per hour of flight - low maintenance requirement for a higher sortie rate. 3. Out-maneuver the enemy to gain firing position. - low wing loading for a high turn rate - ability to decelerate and accelerate 4. Outlast the enemy while Out-manoeuvering him. - have a high fuel fraction of the fighter's loaded weight 5. Achieve reliable skills - carry enough missiles and rounds for the gun. Boyd's work showed the need for fighter aircraft to be capable of 'fast transients' which are quick changes in direction, speed and altitude. A fighter aircraft that is able to turn harder without losing energy will out-turn it's opponent. A 2 degree per second advantage in sustained rate of turn will enable a fighter aircraft to dominate an engagement. Fighter aircraft also survive by being unpredictable. The ability for fast transients allows a fighter aircraft to change direction suddenly without losing energy, and energy is life in a dog-fight. In such an encounter a fighter aircraft shouldn't be doing the same turn for more than seven seconds because that gives enough time for an enemy aircraft outside the dog-fight to determine where the fighter is going to be and possibly attack it. So this was the vision that was sought to be realised by means of F-16. The Advanced Day Fighter program was shelved without producing an aircraft but was followed by the Lightweight Fighter program. This latter program issued a Request for Proposals in January 1972 which called for a 20,000 pound class fighter aircraft with high maneuverability, acceleration and range, and optimised to fight between 30,000 feet and 40,000 feet at speeds in the range of 0.6 to 1.6 Mach. This was the flight regime that the U.S. Air Force expected most future air combat to occur in, based on analysis of the wars of the 1960s in Vietnam and the Middle East. The fruits of the Lightweight Fighter program were the single-engine YF-16 from General Dynamics and the twin-engine YF-17 from Northrop that were produced as flying prototypes. The YF-16 won the competition and became the F-16 in service with the U. S. Air Force because it had lower operating costs and greater range. It was also more manouverable; since single-engine fighters have lower roll inertia than the twin-engined fighters. One less engine means that maintenance costs are inherently 20 percent lower. Now let us see some of the salient features of world-beating F-16 : 1. The F-16's first flight was in 1974. Richard Nixon was President in the same year. But in its new avatar as F-21, it is still one of the most capable fighters 45 years later. 2. Most military pilots refer to the F-16 as the "Viper", because of its similarities to the head of the snake. 3. Over 4500 F-16s have been built. 4. The F-16 was the first fighter jet to use a side-mounted control stick. The stick lets pilots rest their arm while flying, giving them better control of the jet in high-G maneuvers. 5. The F-16 also was the first fighter jet to have a frameless bubble canopy, giving pilots a 40 degree look-down angle over the sides, and a 15-degree look-down angle over the nose. 6. The F-16 was the first fighter built to pull 9-Gs, and it was aerodynamically designed to reduce energy loss during high-G maneuvers. 7. The fly-by-wire flight control system was the first of its kind. Since the jet was designed with relaxed static stability, the fly-by-wire system keeps the jet highly manouverable, while at the same time keeping it pointed in the direction pilot wants to go. 8. The F-16 is relatively easy to service as well. 80% of the access panels can be opened without using a ladder or stand. 9. The F-16 was one of the first aircraft to utilise vortex lift at high-angles-of-attack. The fuselage flares out ahead of the wing root, creating a small lift surface. 10. The wing has a variable camber that is automatically controlled by the fly-by-wire system, significantly increasing manouverability in highly-variable flight conditions. 11. F-16 are still being built for foreign militaries. 12. With its high thrust-to-weight ration, extreme manouverability, and pilot ergonomics and visibility, the F-16 has been one of the most respected - and feared - fighter aircraft of the past 40 years. 13. F-16 is planform in construction and is coated with RAM paint. So it gives a clean RCS of just 1.5m2 making it excellent in its category at beyond visual range combat. Remember it is armed with AMRAAM-120 D. 14. General Dynamics was using the conventional tailed layout with blended body and LERX strakes and Fly-By-Wire - since it was new and risky tech - ensured they had good Plan Bs in case the FBW did not work. They also used less than 3% composites (since machining composite skins can be tedious and time-consuming) and indeed their structure was decidedly conservative-machined rather than chemically milled skins for the wings and traditional sheet and strip for the rest of the structure. Result was a near perfect aerodynamic design. Mori Keaki - 120% Darling: Part 2 Chapter 12 - If my heart had a home…

Mori Keaki published this essay book the month before her retirement as Top Star of Snow Troupe. It is mainly a memoir of her personal journey in Takarazuka, as well as her early life. Her writing/formatting style is kind of unique, and I tried to reproduce or reflect it as much as possible. 120% Darling has around 24 chapters, and I plan to post one every Friday. Now that I am graduating from Takarazuka, to become an actress…

‘I’ll be living in Tokyo now, won’t I?’

It was the middle of the night, and I was in my own room, but it was suddenly so deeply moving that I ended up sighing.

I had lived in Takarazuka since my second year of high school.

First in the ‘Violet Dormitory’, and then later living by myself.

Takarazuka had completely become my hometown.

As for Tokyo, well, since I would stay there for about a month at a time during Tokyo performances, it wasn’t as if it was totally unknown to me, but usually I would just go back and forth from where I was staying to the theatre, so I had never been able to relax there during my time off.

But Tokyo was a city I liked.

My favorite city is Sendai.

Although currently I’ve totally become a Takarazuka resident,

I feel like if I get a chance to live there properly, I’ll come to really like Tokyo.

If I’m describing Sendai, before anything else I would have to say that it’s a city with a laid-back, generous personality.

And also, although I think this is probably an attribute of the whole Touhoku region, everything’s straightforward, without any two-faced meaning.

To tell the truth, when I first moved to Takarazuka, I found Kansai conversations bewildering.

In Touhoku, even in speech, everything is relaxed, and laid-back, with a warm mood to it…

But the speed of Kansai dialect…

That was especially so in Osaka, I think. At the start, I would recoil at the force at which shopkeepers would talk.

Recently, I feel like since there are so many celebrities from Kansai performing on national television channels that people all over Japan have become accustomed to hearing Osaka dialect and Kobe dialect and Kyoto dialect. When I was little, in Sendai there was wa~y, wa~y less opportunity to hear Kansai dialect.

Therefore, even words like “Kashiwa!” [T/N: Kansai dialect term for ‘poultry’]

“Hm? In Kansai do they say ‘kashira’ (which means ‘head’) as ‘kashiwa’...”

I thought re~ally dumb things like that sometimes.

“Chaunen” [‘that’s wrong’], “Hottoitenka” [‘buzz off’], “Donkusainaa” [‘what a klutz’], et cetera, et cetera.

While now I can understand the meanings easily and sometimes end up using Kansai dialect terms myself, back then I had quite the struggle.

Although Takarazuka is obviously located in Kansai, it couldn’t be described as a big city, and it’s origin was as a ‘hotspring town’.

The atmosphere is relaxed.

That aspect I feel really saved me back then, as a girl who had journeyed there from Sendai.

All around the town, the scenery and atmosphere was...free and open, I guess you could say.

When I was taking the Takarazuka Music School Entrance Exam,

I said to my big sister who had accompanied me:

“I feel like I lived here once a long time ago~”

But she just laughed at me and said

“What on earth are you saying, silly~”

I felt like, if I had believed in past lives, then the ‘me’ before I became ‘the present me’ had lived there…

That was the feeling I had when I encountered Takarazuka.

And at the time of the next cherry blossom season, I will leave this Takarazuka behind.

For Tokyo, Tokyo, TOKYO…

‘I have to find someplace to live…’

Although I have those kinds of real-life problems at the moment,

‘At least this time I won’t have any language issues!’

I feel comfortable on that account.

Although Takarazuka is a stage company made out of professional performers, it’s also a perpetual school, so it has that protective atmosphere of warmth about it.

Until graduation (...which actually means retirement), you’re always a student.

And even if you graduate, you then become a ‘former student’.

I don’t mean this in a bad way, but I think that in the world of Takarazuka, that most pure period of your ‘youth’ that everyone looks back on so nostalgically is treasured and protected.

And now I’m finally journeying away from here…

Well, when it comes to the stage I have my own views.

But thinking of my emotional age, or my age in terms of societal experience, or any aspect besides the stage, I feel like my mind is still that of a second-year high school student… It’s scary.

Scary to retire now, and then move to Tokyo.

I’ve also been thinking:

‘Somehow...this feels like my first time ‘having a job’...’

I have a feeling that I will keep having new ‘discoveries’ and ‘feelings’, too.

But still, to be honest, I don’t dislike all this internal commotion.

This new city I’m going to live in, Tokyo…

This new challenge I’m going to face, a career as an actress…

If I think about it, among all the fans who were good enough to like the Takarazuka otokoyaku, ‘Mori Keaki’...

Perhaps there are some who will think,

“Now that she’s become an actress, there’s something lacking about Mori Keaki!!”

If so…

I’m sorry, but please keep the memory of the Takarazuka otokoyaku ‘Mori Keaki’ in your hearts, give up on the actress ‘Mori Keaki’, and continue to support Takarazuka.

It might be silly, but I do believe in destiny…

I wonder if that current will sweep me along to some new trials.

Even so, I’ll take them all on! I’m definitely not going to give up.

I’ll keep putting in effort, effort, and more effort.

But, this new challenge, of an actress’ career.

Who knows if I’ll be as ‘lucky’ as I was in Takarazuka…

To say I was 100% unafraid would be a lie.

But, this is the tomorrow I have chosen for myself.

‘The only option is to just do it!’

If there really is a god of Destiny, or something like that.

I think they must be a playful, whimsical prankster.

For example, let’s say that the amount of Destiny being used on different people is generally at the 70% level.

God doesn’t ever mean to cause anyone unhappiness, I think.

And so, after that 70% baseline, if there are people who say ‘Is there anything more!?’ and keep running on ahead, forward-looking, I feel like they give them a present of Plus Alpha Destiny…

And then, if there are people who reach the 80%, 90%, 100% level, and keep earnestly saying ‘Hey, hey, what’s next!?’ they’ll respond ‘Now then, you’ve come this far… Well then. To be honest, this is a special favor, but…’ and give out 110% or 120% Destiny…

That’s kind of how I feel.

I feel like God must have been watching my failures and saying,

“Ordinarily, people would give up if they fell so badly.”

“Oh, look at that! You got up. Even if it makes you want to cry, don’t give up!”

“Well. Off you run again. Nothing discourages you, does it. Well, I’ll at least make sure there are no huge boulders in your way that would kill you if you ran into them. But it’s still going to be a rocky path. She’s definitely going to fall again…”

I think in reality, it was everyone who stayed by my side,

Now the one speaker that we have is loud enough for us to forgive the latter.

But we do wish Sony added some water protection for extra safety ah fingerprint scanners they have been on smartphones in the past five years or so enough us to forget there were phones without the useful scanners in the first place Sony was the only one.

So kind to remind us every year is false in u.s. Lacks fingerprint scanners until today well believe it or not now in 2018 Sony has finally made phones with fingerprint scanners the XA two series both have a fingerprint reader on their backs and it's true right below the camera.

It works just like you'd expect from a modern phone fast and reliable finally sorry the big difference between the XA 2 and the ultra is screen size the XA 2 has a 5.2-inch display big but not gigantic.

Sonya also made the ultra, and this one is pro gigantic indeed it's a 6-inch screen, but it's not a two by one screen it would be narrower and taller no this is a regular full 16 by nine display that you either love or can't quite hold in your hand.

Because it's so big or because you have teeny tiny hands ok maybe the screen is too big after all on a more positive note a 16 by nine-screen thus does have a surprising amount of advantages over two by one screen first video looks perfectly fine on it.

You don't get black bars secondly 16 by nine screens come with big bezels with plenty of space for nice and clicky physical buttons on the bottom just like the Xperia x8.

And the ultra-right well not exactly these two have a significant bezel on the top and bottom, but there is nothing on those bezels the bottom bezel is just there sitting quite useless.

Instead, you get on-screen buttons which are ok these two are also LCD screens they're quite reflective, which makes them a bit hard to see outdoors colors are lively and vivid.

Also just a bit on the cold side with blueish White's you can tweet this to a certain extent when you go into display settings though both also feature a full HD resolution which is sharp enough for most people.

Next, let's talk software the new Sony's shipped with Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box Thank You Sony on top of it is Sony's Xperia user interface which keeps things mostly clean and fasts you do get some neat options like an easy way to change the icons to whatever you like.

You also get plenty of Google apps on board just as we'd expect under the hood both phones run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 chip this is a step below the flagship level eight series of chips, but we could not see all that much of a difference.

In the daily grind, everything runs fairly smoothly and without a stutter and even with more demanding games, I rarely noticed a significant drop in frame rates good news is that the Snapdragon 630.

Does not get hot when you play an intense game like Hungry Shark evolution or when you are multitasking speaking of multitasking.

The x8 only has three gigabytes of RAM a notable sim for an Android phone this means absolute reload if you start multitasking heavily the ultra has four gigs of RAM which is an improvement for power users on board you.

Get 32 gigs of native storage on both, and around 24 of them are available to use 32 gigabytes is a bit on the low side these days, and even cheaper phones come with 64 gigs.

Sony did chip out a bit here thankfully you have a micro SD card slot in cases of storage emergency for connectivity the ex a 2 Series support the range of LTE bands but if you're getting them in the US you only be able to use them on GSM carriers such as AT&T or t-mobile no Verizon or Sprint support.

Unfortunately, globally, everything should work fine in most country as they support a wider range of LTE bands. Sony makes them on most of the camera sensors for phones and DSLRs.

Its are usually not the most advanced camera phones out there we don't know why that is but let's see how the sa-2 series do with the camera get a dual front camera on the larger ultra.

And even a front-facing flash for those nighttime selfies one of these cameras is a regular 16-megapixel shooter while the other is an 8 megapixel one with a much wider field a whole 120 20 degrees lens.

There's also optical image stabilization board with both we camp both cameras the smaller X 82.

However, lacks most of that it only has the one front camera the one with the broad field of view as far as the main cameras are concerned we get the same setup on both on 23-megapixel camera with steady shot electronic image stabilization which was excellent and high-speed hybrid auto focus.
