Hmm...I only write happy ends so...maybe a few oneshots (very few) in "Other kinky situations, BONUS, AU & more." ?

My hanahaki chapter might have a more bittersweet ending note, maybe ? (☀️​🌻, kinda unrequited feelings but it's imply that it won't be for long...and a part 2 is in the work that confirm it becomes mutual)

Or the part 1 of my Twins AU chapter ? But part 2 & 3 make it all fine so... (​🔪​☀️​🌻 but part 1 focus on the 🔪​☀️​)

There's also the part 1 of the one where Omega|Basil is assaulted by random alphas, I guess ? But part 2 is all about his lovers comforting him. (☀️​🌻​🏀​🎀)

Sometimes but rare enough. I usually delete comments if they pass the limits (insults, slurs, death threats, suibaiting,…)

I don't really mind people stating their opinions as long as it stay polite and don't pollute the comments too much.

9. Do you write s.mut?

YES!! I try to include it in a natural and casual way, especially in multi-chapters fics, because that's what I like to read. It's part of life so it's only natural that it's also part of the characters' life.

I'm aroace & both romance- and sex-repulsed so I'm a little picky with what I like and writing those (romance&sex) can be a little bit of a challenge sometimes.

10. Do you write crossovers? 

I never did and don't plan to in the future but you never know. Probably not though, not really my thing.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? 

Not that I know of.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? 

Not by someone else. I translate my OMORI fics in french little by little myself. It's my first language but somehow writing is easier in english ?

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? 

Nope, and I'm not sure I could.

14. What’s your all-time favorite ship?

Well, outside of poly ships (cause I really can't chose between those), I guess Sunflower ? It became such an OTP, that I feel genuine distress if I try to read an OMORI fic where they're explicitly not together.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

None. Unless something happens to me, I will finish all of them even if it takes me years :)

16. What are your writing strengths?  

Um...I've been told that the way I write the characters dynamics is good ? I dunno, if there's some of my readers that see this and want to let me know what they think is my writing strengths, go ahead !

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Beside the way my disability mess with my ability to write so much that I need to use text generation (NovelAI) as an assistive tool ? I dunno, that's kinda the bigger one (￣ ￣|||)

Translating thoughts into words is pretty hard for me so...yeah.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I think I would only do it for a language I can speak well enough to not mess up too bad ?

The need for more Plural|Sunny fics compelled me ! (It's canon, you can't change my mind)

20. Favorite fic you’ve written? 

Oof, tough choice. I love all my fics quite a lot and I can't really chose one so...

And so, he'd wait. (☀️​🌻, mentioned before, I'm quite proud of this one and I love the Yandere/Yandere Unhealthy but Happy relationship going on there, someone once described it as the "healthiest unhealthy relationship" they've ever seen and...well I guess it fit lol)

It wasn't like things couldn't have been different... (☀️​🌻 + ☀️​​🏀, Short: 4 chapter, Angst with a Happy Ending, the whole "I let my chance pass and now he's with someone else" but with a polyamorous resolution~, I also love the discussion between Polly and Basil in the last chapter <3)

Always there for you, always loved you. (🔪​☀️ + ​☀️🌻 ➡️​ 🔪​☀️🌻🍉 + Minor 🎀🍭, Not completed but I really have a soft spot for this fic, I always write Sunny and Basil as autistic but in this one I feel it's the most obvious, also the 🔪​☀️​🌻​🍉!! I love that ship so much)

The door may be locked, but the window isn't. (☀️​🌻 + ❓, Soft Yandere|Basil who wasn't involved in Mari's death here, Not completed but again love the Unhealthy but Happy relationship going on there, the...almost wholesome if you don't think about it vibe)

Who became a twoshot but shh...I just really love the whole polycule aspect in this one, the NariLamb moment is so cute, the LeshyCat with Thory playing matchmaker, Leshy comparing Nari's size to the Lamb lol)

Also a bunch of oneshots like the Basil front while visiting Basil. (Basil/Basil) or the Solo-bloodplay & Phone sex. (Basil/Sunny) or the Headspace|Basil fucks Sunny's eye socket. RKZ Fandom Boundaries/ Consent

Ive seen some creators make these boundary lists as of late and although I’ve accepted that I cannot control what a fandom does, I believe its at least important to vocalize my boundaries so there is no confusion in the future.

This is mainly about Roadkillerz, but can be extended to apply to whatever else I make in the future!

[CW: Brief mentions of nsfw topics, p*dophillia, and other problematic subjects common in fandom, will also briefly mention hate speech]

1. Fan Merch/art/fic/etc

- Although I would prefer if you financially supported me first, I do not mind the creating and selling of fan merch such as art prints, stickers, etc!

- With that said, I will discuss what I am personally comfortable with seeing depicted:

1a. Hate Speech

- I do not encourage the promotion of hate speech such as lgbtq+ phobia, racism, sexism, anti semitism, etc using my work/characters as the face for that. Not only does it directly go against my own values, but for RKZ specifically, goes against the intended themes of the series (nazi “punks” are posers)

- On the topic of politics, I dont mind the promotion of, love speech? I guess? I dont know how the groups affected would feel about fandomifying important issues, but if you want to use RKZ characters for political stances that dont fall under hate speech go for it. Pro-lgbtq fan works for example is fair game.

1b. NSFW

- To be super blunt: I do not mind NSFW content as a concept, majority of my characters are of age (18+) unless stated otherwise.

- I, however, will expect some very basic criteria:

One, I do not feel comfortable with ships between family members, adult/children, etc. I dont want to encourage ship discourse since anything can be considered abusive, but as long as its NEITHER of those two things I do not care.

Two, Please be a responsible ADULT (no minors are permitted to publicly post nsfw content of my work) and keep any nsfw art/fanfiction out of the main tags. I understand minors will still seek out content not meant for them, but there are also people (not just minors either) who want to be able to scroll through a tag without seeing something they dont want to. Sex is about consent, and if your work doesnt include at LEAST a warning of some kind that aint good.

Overall just have some common sense, and if you do see people doing these things please dont debate them- just block and move on. I hate it too but getting into flamewars isnt productive and you’ll just be angry and you’ll never change their minds. Bonus thing: love yourself, care for yourself

2. Staff interactions

2a. I am alright with having a casual back and forth with fans, however I highly discourage developing parasocial relationships. If you wish to be my friend, you HAVE to treat me like a person. I do not respond well to idol-worship or lovebombing. I’ve had many bad experiences with people being super weird with that. I am not saying this to be rude, but I can and will block you if you make me feel uncomfortable, spam my DMs, or do anything else that I believe oversteps my comfort. I prefer to not befriend fans anyway since that promotes power dynamics, plus the before mentioned idol-worship which just makes me feel inhuman, so do not get your hopes up

EDIT: ALSO THIS SHOULD GO WITHOUT SAYING, But do not attempt to block evade/cyberstalk either. It WILL not end well for you. (if you want to know what counts as cyberstalking, it should be at the point where you dedicate your life to finding out literally everything about a person- casually checking my socials is fine as long as it doesnt absorb your life)

Cyberstalking and block evading are a clear rejection of established boundaries and if you participate in that, then you are just scum. Theres no woke twist you can put on it to justify it. Its wrong no matter how you feel about somebody.

2b. With that said, please do not harass anybody involved with the production of Roadkillerz/Other works including VAs, friends, friend of friends, etc. Please remember that they are humans too and have the right to privacy and healthy relations like anybody else.

2c. Fetish mining/sharing nsfw content/etc: Even though I said I dont mind NSFW content, I still do not consent to receiving sexual messages from strangers that includes but are not limited to sexting/flirting, sending nsfw art/fics, irl photos in a sexual manner, requesting I draw fetish material like Sam wearing a straight jacket (TRUE STORY, BY THE WAY.), etc.

If i think of anything else I’ll add to this but for now I believe this should be enough.

nope -> if it's a hard no and you'd never click on a fic with that tag or or you even have the tag blocked or you'd insta click out of the fic if it wasn't tagged

Age gap: -4/nope

It highly depends, it's not a determining factor of whether I'll like a fic or not *if* both characters are adults. If both or one is a minor or too close to be a minor it's a hard nope. If the fic revolves around age gap I'm distrustful generally

Codependency: -2~+3

It can explore interesting ideas for sure! Sometimes it's too much for me though. It highly depends on the author's vision for me here, what situations the characters are in. If they have a long convoluted history it's a plus.

Obsession/Possessiveness, jealousy: +4

I do like possessiveness tropes but hear me out. Both characters are possessive in very different ways and they clash over it. They don't understand each other's way to go about it.

Opposites (grumpy/sunshine etc): +5

It just tends to work well! Sometimes it's boring instead it depends on how well the characters are explored for me.

Enemies to lovers, Enemies with benefits: +100

Forever a favourite. I live for homoerotic rivalry.

Friends with benefits: +3

I don't have anything special to say about this one

Sex to feelings: +7

Yeah I just like to watch characters despair over not getting too attached and failing. This can go many ways other than that, it just tends to be interesting.

Fake dating/relationship: +2

I've never read something like this but I'm interested!

Friends to lovers: +4

I was going to rate it lower but then I remembered long time friends that are not supposed to be friends due to stuff like status and secretly pining for each other and changed my mind.

Found Family: +5

I'm so down for this always. It's one of my favourite tropes ever. My ultimate coping I guess.

Love Triangle: -1

Nothing wrong with it, I just don't find it so interesting.

Poly, open relationships: 0

Very neutral on this one so far. Reason is no other than I'm very picky about which charas and ships I read about so poly fics with the ships I like are rare. Otherwise good, be poly, kiss a lot

THE MOON movie review

Let's start with minor details before I write my movie review. I watched this movie with my two college friends, they are 2/3 of my movie buddies. And the movie was sponsored by Vampedia in exchange of a review.

Me and my friends chose to watch the block screening hosted by one of the fanclubs dedicated to EXO here in the Philippines, named EXO Vento PH. As far as I know they handle events that are related and dedicated to EXO as a group and it's members' individual activities. It was my first time joining their event, it's simple but organized. The admins were friendly and accomodating.

The block screening was held at SM Grand Central Cinema 2 last August 27, 2023. We paid for the movie tickets plus a fan kit that includes some fanmade photocards, The Moon wristband, The Moon attendee card, and The Moon movie postcard. Early birds got the chance to score some free snacks too, but too bad for us we're late and missed the free snacks.

Since we are from Bulacan, we traveled 2 hours by bus and then by grab car going to SMGC.

Prior to this event I won a penguin crocheted keychain from their twitter giveaway and I claimed it during the block screening. It's penguin because penguin represents Kyungsoo. 😂 10/10 for the penguin it's super cute!

GOING BACK TO MOVIE REVIEW NOW.....

The Moon is about an astronaut who is stranded in the moon, Hwang Sun-woo wants to successfully land on the moon to fulfill his father's dream but misfortunes and tragedy follows him. Stuck in the far side of the moon alone, during meteor shower, with limited oxygen, and damaged spaceship. He and his team also struggles to get help from NASA.

So..... it was sooooooo good, and this is coming from a person who's not a huge fan of sci-fi films, Kyungsoo being my EXO biased is just a bonus. I will try my best not to drop too much spoilers BUT my reviews always includes spoilers. So if you're sensitive to spoiler please stop reading this review now.

1. Storyline -

I kind of expected the movie to be confusing and complicated just because it's sci-fi. That's my prejudice about this genre. But surprisingly the flow of the story was smooth and easy to digest. There were side stories here and there, some flashbacks too, but they presented it clean and it did not confuse the viewers. There were some small twists and it made the story more emotional. Also there were some part where we can't help but laugh. The dynamic of the heavy situation mixed with minor comedy is comforting. I love that while we were worried about the main character, the film still gave us some laughs that balanced our emotions.

2. Cinematography -

Hands down to all the people behind the effects both in visual and in sounds. Me and my friends kept praising how beautiful the effects are, this movie has high budget and that will make the viewers more satisfied. The explosions, the moon itself, the sound effects, all of those are perfect. The meteor shower was scary, got a glimpse of how it looks like through this movie, it's both fascinating and scary.

3. Characters -

So this part, one of the main reason why I decided to watch this film was because of Do Kyungsoo. And it did not disappoint me, Hwang Sun-woo which was played by D.O. is a very likeable character. Sun-woo is strong-willed he is determined and while he lacks knowledge in fixing their ship, with his efforts he managed to bring himself back to the other (safer) side of the moon. I love that he never forgets his colleagues. The supporting characters has their own strength as well, even the father of Hwang has a huge impact in the film. Some characters will annoy you but most of the supporting characters are good. My favorite character aside from Hwang (of course he is my most favorite in this film), is Minyoung/Jennifer, she works at NASA and used to work with Hwang's father. She chose to sacrifice her position for Hwang to get help and return to the earth. I love that despite of a possibility that she will be kick out from NASA and lose her job, she still did all her best to help Hwang Sun-woo and his team. It takes courage and empathy to do that, she set aside her dreams and hard work to save a life. And I know it's hard to sacrifice yourself for others but if it could save a life then like her, I believe it's worth the shot.

4. Actors/Actresses -

Everyone was good, I am familiar with most of the actors inside this film, but I never saw the characters they portrayed before in this film, they owned their characters here and that just proved how good and versatile South Korean actors are. Do Kyungsoo deserves a best actor award for this film and role.

5. Ending -

The ending was good as well, the movie started good and it ended good. They just missed some important parts like the rescue, I was hoping they will include that part.

Movie Rating: 10/10

No biased, but this film is one of the bests this year. Do Kyungsoo will surely bag awards for this movie, I am manifesting this because he deserves it. I'll definitely rewatch this again and I encourage you people to support and watch The Moon in cinemas. It's worth the money and time (and long travel in our case).

To be fair the answer isn't too far, but let's go one by one on these, providing videos where I can find them, and tell you about the weird ass world of Ratchet and Clank (contains context free spoilers for a few games, the answer to the poll will be bolded if you just wanna skip to that): 1. One of the main themes of the series, first two games especially, was making fun of consumerism and the overreach of capitalism. One of the best jokes in the second game is when faced with a computer that contains plot critical info, it refuses to operate without first being paid ten thousand bolts (the games currency). 2. In the game Full Frontal Assault (also known as Q Force), the main villain turns out to be a former side character from the second game; Zurgo, a fanboy of Captain Quark (who is both a superhero and celebrity). When learning of his true identity, Quark mentions he got a lot of letters from Zurgo...some of which contained "very disturbing fanfiction". 3. Okay a few tags about this one tickled me because they went "this sounds too normal this has to be it" but nope, here he is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHNZftXmf1U Not only that, but he's actually a secret bonus boss, that you need to come back with late game equipment to find and fight. Fun fact about this guy, you can only fight and beat him once per save file. In New Game Plus if you've beaten him before his arena stays closed.

4. Ah yes, the timeless tale of Lance and Janice. Dr. Nefarious, one of the most prominent and popular villains, is an evil robot with a curious little glitch. If he gets too angry, he short circuits and he starts broadcasting an absolutely bonkers soap opera about the seemingly endless troubles of two lovers. Its pretty much every soap opera cliche and joke on overdrive. Its great.

5. In Ratchet Deadlocked, the main villain is a network producer named...Gleeman Vox. And his network is, of course, the Vox Network. He's sleezy, he's rude, he's pompous and arrogant, and he runs a death game where he kidnaps heroes from across the galaxy to make them fight to the death. The game isn't that political, so the most Fox News-y thing he really does is use his Vox News show to slander Ratchet with obviously faked pictures and biased testimony...from former villains.

6. Okay God was a bit of intentional overstatement on my part...but only a little. Appearing in the first game as a quick gag (Plumber's Crack), he shows up again in he second game in a semi-secret area, making a quip about "seeing you in a year or so". About a year later the next game came out. And it just of spiraled from there. In the first PS3 game he makes a joke about "not recognizing you in High Def" and every time he shows up again it seems like he's not only aware of the fourth wall, but future events.

7. The winning option! And to be fair if I didn't know this series I would probably pick this one too. One of the bosses of Deadlocked is The Eviscerator, a huge bug guy with arm blades. An unlockable in New Game Plus reveals he's really good at cooking and spends most of his off time making gourmet meals.

8. Again, a bit of an exaggeration, but the Groovitron is no joke. Introduced in the first PS3 game, this baby can make every enemy and NPC in any game it appears in dance to the beat. All of them, even the final bosses! Of course its effect is rather short lived on bosses, but the fact remains that nothing is immune to this thing, and that's just funny to me.

9. Slim Cognito, yes that's his name, was introduced in the second game as a seller of After-Market ship upgrades, as well as a black market weapon mod dealer. He reappears in the third game, which is set in a different galaxy from the second, and explains his presence as having to escape from police after "a Suck Cannon upgrade was mistakenly sold to a minor." 10. One of two options to get no votes! I'm actually kind of impressed, but I guess the entire plot of the second game is a bit harder to hide. But yeah, one of the main plot threads of Going Commando revolves around a manufactured pet that is a lot more dangerous than advertised.

11. Here it is, the actual right answer. Now this might have thrown people off because I kinda went with a technicality here. One of the most reoccurring weapon types in R&C is the "animal ray gun", which is always an unlimited ammo laser that turns enemies into, usually, harmless animals. First game had chickens, then sheep, ducks, one of the mobile games had cows, but no pigs! Technically. In Deadlocked, there's a weapon mod that you can optionally equip that turns enemies at low health into random animals, one of which being pigs. But a weapon that specifically turns people into pigs? Nope.

12. And the second one to get no votes! I guess I shouldn't be too surprised though, because if anything was going to escape this series to be known by people who never even played any of them...it was gonna be Death To Squishies. Yes, that pop star is named Courtney Gears. The game came out in 2004, give up a break.

Okay, inspired by my Ratchet and Clank thoughts, non-R&C, players, which of these DIDN'T happen in the franchise:

You know, I’ve noticed that Nagi pulls that book out from time to time, typically in situations that she’s clearly trying to dematerialise from what’s going on and avoid participation in the conversation. I’d need to sweep through them again to be sure, but I’m pretty sure she’d bring it out a lot of the time when Kanon showed up. I always figured she was just bankrupt of patience to pay attention to Fret’s flirting, but now I’m wondering...

As a disclaimer, and as I’ve often said before, I’m nervous about approaching the topic of shipping or characters liking each other with a 10-metre pole. It’s often a speculation game if it isn’t explicit or at least as heavily implicit as, say, Rindo and Shoka. Relationships are many-splendoured things, love is a layered emotion that comes in many forms for many people of many kinds of relation and without even peeking directly into a person’s mind, it’s possible that they can have all kinds of thoughts and feelings about anyone that nobody ever sees or knows for sure. As a result of this, discussions of this nature are very open season without direct confirmations (and sometimes even with direct confirmations) based on subjective viewpoints and preferences and even sometimes becoming a core passion of the story for some people. Plus, like, we’re on Tumblr. Wars have been started over this stuff.

So, it’s with a very timid voice spoken from inside a heavily fortified bunker that I say that I kinda think Nagi likes Fret.

To be honest, it’s something I’ve wondered since the start of Week 2 but kept at the back of my mind because I thought I was reading too much into it. I know there’s like a 3-4 year age difference between them, which isn’t massive but is still a bit of a gap. Looking past that, they butt heads all the time, which can be an expression of hidden affection but I think it’s wise in general never to assume that without at least a bit of cause. I knew they were friends who definitely care about each other deep down, but I figured it’d be a bold statement to assume there was more there than that.

But at this point, I think I’m feeling bold enough to speculate that about Nagi here. She’s already proven to want to get on Fret’s nerves and that getting a rise out of him is fun for her. For someone who claims all the time to be never speaking to him, she reacts to him all the time, including repeatedly telling him that she isn’t speaking to him, even for minor matters. Whenever Fret talks to Kanon or about Kanon, she often brings up this book like she’s hiding from what’s going on. In the last post, Fret talked about his feelings for Kanon and she was quite distinctly not smiling about it at any point. And then there’s this exhange here.

Now to be fair, she’s quite vague. And she outright tells Fret that if he wants to know how to interpret her words, he has to do it himself in his own time. There’s a couple of ways you could read that and she could be telling him in her own words to get a grip and look inward rather than outwards. Still, the way she tells him that she wasn’t speaking to him here feels very pointed. Before, she’s usually wearing a frustrated or annoyed face when she does this. Here, she’s just looking at her book in quite a resigned way. I feel like it’s a fair interpretation that she’s trying to hint something towards him about her own feelings.

Maybe, maybe not. Either way, Fret’s oblivious, which in itself is something I feel like is getting framed as an unawareness of her feelings kind of thing. And either way, Nagi definitely cares about Fret and I believe is trying to help him by giving him advice and encouraging him to think for himself on it. It’s an interesting moment and it means a lot to see these two having some kind of serious conversation, given how much their double act has entertained us throughout the game. Capped off here with Fret being bewildered by the notion that he ought to think.

Bonus:

Whatever the deal with these two, Rindo never changes. 5 feet from all of this and mentally on another planet.

TerraMythos 2021 Reading Challenge - Book 23 of 26

Title: Stories of the Raksura, Volume Two (2015)

Stories of the Raksura, Volume Two is the second of two short story/novella collections that take place in the Books of the Raksura universe. As before, I recommend reading the original trilogy if you’re interested in this series— otherwise you will be pretty confused. You can check out my review of The Cloud Roads here. 

Of the two novellas and three short stories in this volume, my favorites were “The Dead City” and “The Dark Earth Below”, both of which got a 9/10 from me.

Content warnings for the book: Suicidal ideation, graphic violence, gore, death, parental disownment, childbirth.  

#1 - The Dead City (9/10)

Fleeing from the ruins of Saraseil, Moon attempts to process his trauma. After wandering aimlessly, he stumbles upon a small village troubled by a rash of strange disappearances. Moon resolves to uncover a mysterious threat and save the locals— but he must hide his true identity lest they turn on him.

He was tired of looking at dead groundlings, tired of feeling sorry for them. The Fell had hunted them through the streets of Saraseil, dug through the walls of their houses. There was a raw lump of emotion in his chest, boiling and expanding until it felt as if it was going to burst through his scales.

He wanted to make somebody else feel sorry.

This story really clicked with me; it’s more emotionally intense than many stories in this series. It’s also one of the few glimpses we get of Moon before discovering the Raksura, and the difference between this painfully lonely version of him and the version we get throughout the series is quite striking. Things gets better, Moon, I swear! The prose is also on point and very entertaining to read. I found the monsters in this story pretty creepy; basically a Three Worlds take on zombies.

Even so, I had trouble understanding why I liked this story so much, but then I realized— it’s a freaking Murderbot plot. Hyper competent, emotionally stunted loner stumbles upon a bunch of strangers in need, and decides they must help said strangers without being able to articulate why… all while hiding their secret identity. Cue a bunch of badass action scenes spliced together with emotionally charged self-reflection. This is in no way a criticism, because I LOVE that plot, and it’s kind of funny to see a Murderbot prototype in the Raksura universe.

#2 - Mimesis (8/10)

Jade is on a diplomatic mission with a small contingent of warriors. When one of the younger ones disappears, she searches the nearby forest to find him. But she soon discovers much more than she bargained for.  

Of course, the lesson might be that instead of the court losing one warrior it was about to lose a warrior and a sister queen, just because Jade didn’t want to look like a coward. And maybe a predator’s burrow wasn’t a good place for an inner debate about responsibility and leadership.

This is a very short story, about the length of a standard chapter. But I did enjoy it; it’s nice to have a story from Jade’s POV. The monster here is maybe the creepiest one in the series? I like how its whole deal ties into the title. Other than that, not a whole lot to say about this one.

#3 - Trading Lesson (7/10)

A group of wandering traders visit the Indigo Cloud colony tree. Moon notices one attempting to swindle a Raksura, and promptly puts a stop to it.

Moon’s attempt to appear innocent and only mildly interested was clearly failing, so he said, “I like amber fine. I don’t like traders that take advantage of people.” Iglen wasn’t obligated to play fairly. But Moon wasn’t obligated to let him get away with it, either.

If “Mimesis” seemed short, this one is really only a few pages long. It’s basically a slice-of-life scene at Indigo Cloud. It’s some fun bonus content if you want to see a fragment of daily life among the Raksura, but not much else.

#4 - The Almost Last Voyage of the Wind-Ship Escarpment (8/10)

Jai is the captain of a small wind-ship with a tight-knit crew. Their newest member is a young man named Flaren, recently disowned and left for dead by his family. Jai feels an especially strong kinship with him— but when Flaren’s father offers her crew a job to deliver ransom in an active hostage situation, Flaren sees it as an opportunity to regain favor with his family.

Not only would they be rescuing people who were badly in need of rescuing, stuck-up Issilan nobles though they were, but the rest of the payment Canon Hain had promised was so large they couldn’t afford to pass it up. “The pirates want their ransom, we want their hostages and our payment for freeing them. If it goes well, everyone gets what they want.”

Everyone nodded, reassured, and Jai felt the tension ease. Then Shiri had to say darkly, “You hope that’s all they want.”

Honestly, I’ve always wanted to see a story that takes place in the Three Worlds, but doesn’t have anything to do with the Raksura. This is one such story, and I found it entertaining! I liked the themes of found family— specifically that love shouldn’t be conditional. It’s a cute story with some good action scenes.

#5 - The Dark Earth Below (9/10)

Jade is pregnant and close to giving birth, sending Moon into an anxious spiral. At the worst possible time, the Indigo Cloud colony finds itself the target of trouble. A small party of groundling explorers are found poisoned and near death along the forest floor. Moon finds both himself and the colony stalked by an invisible threat; but figuring out what it is and what it wants proves to be a challenge.

Stone growled and rubbed his face in frustration. Moon sympathized. He added, “I know, this doesn’t make sense.”

“It makes sense,” Stone countered. “We just don’t know why yet.”

This novella is the longest story in this collection; roughly half the book. “The Dark Earth Below” feels different than many Raksura stories. It’s a mix of domestic everyday life and a tense suspense plot. These might seem contradictory, but it totally works. It’s nice to see Moon and Jade interact as a bickering couple, a dimension of their relationship we don’t see much of in the main series. There’s some major catharsis seeing Moon at a point where he’s finally happy, a far cry from his character in “The Dead City”. At the same time, the suspense story (plus creepy monster; a running theme of this collection) is gripping. There’s something about an invisible threat stalking the main characters that really gets to me— and its final reveal sure is something.

Closing Thoughts

I ended up liking this collection a little more than the first one! These anthologies are great for anyone looking for more Raksura content after reading the main series. But I can’t recommend them if you’re not already familiar with at least the original trilogy. If you do end up reading the Raksura books, let me know what you think!

His level is based on the level that everyone else would have to be in order to use the spells we see them use, placing him as a level 11 Rogue (Swashbuckler, naturally) during the game. 

He does not acquire all of the Sorcerer abilities until well after the Nevivon trip; also, I have a house rule that mages get Prestidigitation for freebies, because that is how all mages learn to use magic.

Highly recommended, honestly, otherwise it just turns into a big shame because there are shows I really like but with some content that I don’t like, and why torture myself with it when I can cut it out instead?

Just to give a rough idea, here’s my cut of “Desperada”; mind you, this is just my quick cut of it (basically a “beta” version where I just removed everything I disliked without much care for transitioning/having everything make sense; some of Marinette’s friends talking, the guitar scene, Aspik, etcetera), as I’m not comfortable handing over my “perfect” cut of it since it’s like my personal copy.

Yeah, that’s a super awkward scene. As much as I’d like to imagine that Adrien just doesn’t understand the “guy time” thing (which I still hate), the fact that they use the word “guy” specifically is--ugh.

I wasn’t aware of what he said in the French dub, so thanks! It’s really painful to see her throw so much love his way, openly and publicly and obviously, then be so humiliated for it, only for Adrien to feel nothing for her.

Say whatever you want about Chat Noir’s advances and how sAAAAAAD he is when she rejects him, but her rejections are just that; in private. There aren’t other heroes who are around and Chat is never really humiliated. Even in “Prime Queen,” Chat wasn’t the target - Ladybug was, and then Ladybug shifted it to Nadja - so Marinette is the one taking all the heat in love while Chat gets to sit on the sidelines (plus, then “Oblivio” happened and now people probably all thing they’re a thing).

Yeah! That’s the group I was thinking of!

Though would also accept MC Audrey just doing some “spring cleaning” of the whole staff in general. I have no idea how she’d replace Jeremy since he’s the company’s poster boy but most of the writers have to go at the very least and Jeremy should be given less power.

I think MC Audrey would appreciate how Kagami carries herself, though potential bonus if - while Tom and Sabine just openly trust whatever Marinette wants - Audrey does a bunch of digging to make sure Kagami is “worthy” of being with Marinette (she takes this all very seriously).

Double potential bonus if Kagami takes it just as seriously, so here’s Audrey and Kagami acting as if Kagami dating Marinette is like some sort of job interview.

I have no idea, and I try not to throw around words like “spite ship” because I know people could genuinely like the ship, though I will say that I went on AO3 and - unless I read from - the first Maribat fanfiction on there was posted after the airdate of “Chameleon.” I think it might’ve started with inspiration from “Marinette moves schools” ideas at the very least.

Oh, I understood, no worries! It was just funny for the split second it took me to figure it out.

My bad, that’s not how I meant to come off (especially since “magical girl shows” is a little broad; I mean, obviously I don’t think something like Cardcaptor Sakura is aiming for fanservice when Sakura’s--like... ten). I answered all those asks in the last askplosion in the same day so my brain was a little fried by the time I got to that ask.

I’m not even talking about Sailor Moon either; it’s just that I knew there are shows with fanservice and there are certain magical girl outfits where I kind of give the side-eye.

Absolutely zero problem with girls fighting in pretty outfits though. I fully admit that I’m a bit of a prude so sometimes I see fanservice where there might not be any. Super short skirts without shorts, for example, inherently throw me off (shout-out to Saint Tail - which I discovered while looking up “pretty magical girl outfits” - because the main character does have a skirt in “magical girl” form but also tights/boots and a cute hat, which is one of the more unique ones I’ve seen).

Non-Miraculous Asks:

Do you mean Sailor Moon Crystal? Yeah, the only reason I hesitate on Sailor Moon in general is because I’m not crazy about the transformed designs. It’s not really a matter of animation but more a design choice that takes me out of the experience.

I have seen all of Cardcaptor Sakura anime though, and then all of the Clear Card arc. I like the former, despise the latter, and I tried to keep up with the manga but once one of the big plot details were revealed, I officially dropped it.

As for Revolutionary Girl Utena, I looked it up a while ago and don’t remember what exactly turned me away. It might’ve been the darker tone though if what you say is accurate that it’s a darker take on a magical girl show.

Also, I may or may not have looked up the ending of at least Princess Tutu and I’m sorry, I’m sure it’s a great anime, but if there isn’t a happy ending then I give whatever anime a hard pass.

(More Madoka Magica talk/salt below!)

Ohhh, it started a trend? I had no idea since I don’t actively keep up with every anime out there; descriptions need to really pull me in (the only current anime I’m keeping up with is Hanyou no Yashahime, Otherside Picnic, and Cells at Work (Season 2)).

The focus on specific--uh--body parts in magical girl transformations also reminds me that I think that’s usually what kills it for me, not because of the sexualization but because I expect transformations (especially ones that get repeated over and over) to be really dynamic with changing angles and such, which is harder to do when the camera is trying to draw focus to specific places.

Obviously you have to do it for some moments (I’ve always imagined Miraculous transformations like a potential sheep or another one for rabbit, then rabbit!Jean from Leave for Mendeleiev and fox!Juleka from LadyBugOut) because things will be weird if you focus on nothing, but I think there are ways to draw the eye without trying to sexualize.

Not having Ladybug-esque bodysuits is a good start. It reminds me too much of the Catwoman with just a bodysuit so it leaves nothing to the imagination.

How did I forget about that Sayaka scene? omg (though I dunno if the Bechdel Test is hard to pass if there aren’t really any endgame male love interests? are there rules about that? not saying a pass isn’t a pass but it feels like cheating)

It is nice when fans can respect the opinions of others without having to outright attack. I have had a few people come to me with, “I see your point/respect it even if I disagree,” instead of accusing me/others of--well, you get it.

Fandoms can be really messy, particularly as they get larger. I think there’s a certain balance between small fandoms that all know each other and a big fandom that’s out of control. Then there are things like “loud minority” and it’s just uggggh.

Anyway, back to the asks themselves, yeah, I’m not crazy about taking things that are just meant to be positive/cute/whatever and being like, “OKAY BUT WHAT IF IT WAS EDGY AND SAD.”

Oh, I’ve never heard of that one!

Sayaka dying didn’t really do anything for me either. It’s hard to explain when I saw it so long ago, but it was just Sayaka’s attitude about the whole thing and it made it feel underwhelming. It was a shame too because I liked her and she had potential.

She was Madoka’s friend so I was just like, “Yeah, she’ll die soon.” Probably didn’t help since I knew what I knew about the show being “dark.”

Madoka/Sayaka is probably what I’d support the most out of all the potential shoujo ai ships. To my knowledge, none of them are really canon, though I remember a special song after the death Sayaka and Kyoko which I guess makes them the most canon and that did basically nothing for me since their relationship didn’t interest me (nor did I care for Kyoko as a character). The PSP game might have more intimate potential between the girls, but I never played them so I can’t make those claims (I only remember something about everyone potentially living and then a bad ending for Sayaka where part of her body was decayed when they didn’t get her soul gem back in time).

The tomboy argument makes me think back to a conversation with a friend of mine where we were discussing tomboys in anime and... we couldn’t really think of any? At least any that really qualify as “tomboy” for me.

Like, Misty from Pokemon, for example. I knoooooow everyone really likes Misty, but regardless of my opinion on her, it’s hard to see her as a tomboy.

I feel like they try to lean that way by making her super aggressive and violent (because... m E N) and I think Ash makes a comment once about her not being “like a girl,” but... I feel like that’s just how general “aggressive” female characters are written?

I mean, that’s tsundere female characters I’ve seen in general. Really loud (and not in a “gIrlS aRe sO lOuD aND ScReEcHY” way but like... the way anime gives them big heads while they scream at whatever male character they’re mad at), angry a lot, short fuse, etcetera.

But Misty is still crazy about clothes and dolls, she still gushes about cute things and romance, and both of those things seem pretty indicative of what “standard girl character” would be defined by, since they’re all “stereotypically girl thing” (I say stereotypically for obvious reasons since boys can like blah and girls can like blah and gender exclusivity is blah--). I get that she dresses differently, but that’s about it, and it comes off like, “she dresses differently and she’s ANGRY and VIOLENT, so she’s a tomboy,” which... yeah. They even gave her three beauty queen sisters with CURVES and BUSTS as if to say, “See?? These are GIRLS, not TOMBOYS.” (busty females can exist who are also tomboys, thank you have a nice day).

This becomes more complicated in magical girl anime since girly clothes are usually part of that so “tomboy” means that frills and skirts probably wouldn’t be a factor.

I mean, if you gave those sorts of outfits to me, I’d be like, “SCREW IT, I’M NOT A MAGICAL GIRL ANYMORE. IF LOOKING PRETTY IS REDUCED TO SKIRTS AND FRILLS, SOMEONE ELSE CAN SAVE THE WORLD.”

I’d also like to see some mixes between personalites and “tomboy” things. Like, non-stereotypical tomboy personalities doing tomboy things. Mix and match, y’know?

This was really rambly, but to answer the question... no, I wouldn’t count Sayaka as a tomboy.

I think it also exemplifies the whole “dark and edgy magical girl show” thing because... ugh, how do I put this...

The “girls are overly emotional” thing is already bad, but then you realize that there not being any magical boys is also because that doesn’t hit the “shock value” threshold as much.

Y’know, because boys equal dark and edgy shows, so if there was even one magical boy it wouldn’t be as shocking when Mami gets her head chomped. They could’ve done, “emotional teenagers are the target because they’re in that vulnerable stage; smarter and more physically capable than children, but not as mature/stable as adults,” but having some boys in there for balance (it makes me feel weird saying that when I’m all for girl power shows with an all female cast, but in this show’s logic, it’s a different ball game) would make the show seem less bright and “girly” and thus lessen the shock value.

Does that make sense?

Who do you think will Katarina end up with?

Geordo

There are several reasons for why I think this. 

He is the male lead and is considered in the character introductions at the beginning of each Light Novel, to be One of the TWO leads, while the rest of the cast are divided up as secondary to minor characters.

This is how the characters are introduced in the Light Novels 1-5.

Katarina and Geordo’s character introductions are untouched for the most part from novel to novel. But the way the other characters are introduced with each novel changes bit by bit.

From Alan and Keith being marked as secondary characters in the 1st novel.

To Alan, Keith, and Nicol being marked as secondary characters in the 2nd novel.

To the entire Harem (minus Geordo) being marked as secondary characters in the 3rd novel and onwards.

Now I don’t know the characters introductions beyond the 5th novel, but I highly doubt that they have changed that much or if at all.

Katarina and Geordo are clearly marked as being equal in character importance – the Female Lead and the Male Lead.

Though, in the actual events of the story, Katarina is clearly the MAIN character while Geordo is just one of the many characters who is rotating around her.

Geordo is the first character who we truly meet in the story (excluding Katarina). Signifying his importance to the story as a whole. 

Not only that, but he is only the first character introduced as a romantic interest

As well as the first Doom Flag -

Katarina realizes she’s in the game of Fortune Lover because of Geordo’s name and the fact that their engagement story is the same as from the game. Because of that, we learn what that actually means for Katarina who is the villainess of the original story. Or at least, what she thinks it means.

Being a romantic interest and a doom flag is a character position solely unique to Geordo and Keith.

While every now and again, Katarina will bring up that Maria, Alan and or Nicol are potentially “dangerous” to her and thus people she needs to keep an eye on for her safety… in all honestly, they’re really not. 

Honestly, it kind of feels like the author(s) forget that the other characters could hypothetically be a ‘threat’ to Katarina and remember it randomly at times, and thus just insert it into the story. 

Geordo and Keith are the true “doom flags” for Katarina. And even in that regard, Geordo and Keith are treated somewhat differently from one another. 

Geordo’s role as a doom flag, is given a lot more attention than Keith as a doom flag. Now Katarina will insure her “safety” by telling Keith that she will never stand in his way of him being in love with someone, but that’s about it, as the years go on. 

Katarina practicing her magic and getting stronger in that field to avoid being killed by Keith, is basically dropped as soon as it’s mentioned. As Katarina’s magic is quickly established as being weak, no matter what she does. So, that aspect of the story is a bit forgotten as the story moves forward.

But really, I think that even Katarina realizes that Keith as a doom flag is basically a neutralized threat, because of their close sibling relationship.

Geordo on the other hand, is still treated as a Doom Flag. Essentially all of her plans of escaping her doom, are basically plans that focus on Geordo turning on her and how to escape him specifically. Her snakes and even her sword-fighting (which is brought up less than the snakes).

So, one of the main premises of the story - the romantic and comedic tension of Katarina thinking her love-interests are potential doom-interests for her – is largely dominated by Geordo and Katarina’s relationship with him.

Though Keith is a close second in that regard.

Rivalry 

While everyone is a rival, Geordo and Keith are the two main rivals (especially in the Manga).

We see this with their constant passive aggressive fighting and commentary towards one another, as well as being essential and core elements to the whole Harem and its dynamic.

Now, depending on which medium your engaging with, there are very strong arguments for Maria, Mary, or Alan being a third main rival character or if not that, at least being at a higher level than the others.

Maria

Maria is the original MC from Fortune Lover and is essential to Katarina’s fate…or at least in Katarina’s mind she is. That alone separates her from the others Harem Members. 

Maria is also marked a being different the the rest, by being the newcomer to the Harem, and her and Katarina’s relationship (friendship and more) is a factor to the overall story. 

All of that marks her as being if not a main rival, then certainly higher than others. 

Mary

Mary get in the thick of it as much as Geordo and Keith do (especially in the novels). She is a constant thorn and wrench to Geordo and everyone else, but mostly Geordo.

Alan

Alan, because of his character design and popularity among fans, he gets leveled up and is given more attention as the story continues to progress and the anime clearly cements him as a main rival.

As shown in Vol 5. Geordo is the main rival to everyone and they’re all separated into groups into what their roles are in regards to breaking Geordo and Katarina’s engagement up and keeping them apart.

While really for comedic sakes, Geordo being the biggest opponent to everyone does, to some degree, tell us about his chances with Katarina (or at least I think so).

Kiss Scenes (LIGHT NOVEL SPOILERS BELOW)

In Novels 1-5, there are essentially 8 kisses that Katarina receives from the other characters (on her hand to her lips).

Out of these kisses, Geordo is the partner 6 times. Out of these kisses there are 3 pictures, that while not depicting the kisses themselves, do depict the moment just before. All of those pictures depict Geordo’s kisses.

Hand Kiss – Geordo (Vol.1)

There is a picture depicting the overall proposal scene, but not Geordo kissing Katarina’s hand or him about to.

Neck Kiss – Geordo (Vol.1)

There is a picture of Geordo hugging Katarina as they dance, right before he kisses her, but I didn’t really think it counted.

Water Kiss – Geordo (Vol.2)

This is absolutely a kiss scene. You can debate whether it’s CPR or something else, but the way it’s treated in the context of the story - it’s a kiss scene. Simple as that. 

Neck Kiss 2.0 – Sora (Vol.3)

No picture.

Retaliation Kiss – Geordo (Vol.3)

No picture.

Confession Kiss – Geordo (Vol.3)

Basically, Katarina realizes that Geordo has romantic feelings for her in this scene. While she initially thought his Retaliation Kiss was just a dream of hers, a dream she was very flustered by, she is now more than aware of what is happening.

Waking Up Kiss – Keith (Vol.4)

Keith wakes up from his own Dark Magic Coma (so to speak) and thinking Katarina is just a dream, he kisses her, much to the shock of Katarina. 

No Picture.

Retaliation Kiss 2.0 – Geordo (Vol.4)

Upset that Keith kissed Katarina in the “Waking Up Kiss”, Geordo also kisses her. 

This scene in particular, especiall with the picture, I think really cements Geordo as the one who Katarina will end up with. 

Simply because, Keith just kissed Katarina and there was no picture depicting it even though it happened a few moments/pages ago, but yet Geordo’s kiss (or about to kiss) is depicted. So, to me, this seems very telling.

[Update] Originally I brought up how Nicol kissed Katarina in Vol.8 that also had a picture depicitng the scene...but that was inaccurate. There is no kiss scene between the two in that moment.

Any others, I have no idea about. 

I’m just going to stick to the novels I have read up to this point. 

So, let’s get to my main point. Out of the 8 Kisses Katarina receives, in Volumes 1-5. It’s very telling to me that Geordo is the one doing the kissing 6 out of the 8 times. Plus, in the the first 5 Volumes, the 3 kisses that are depicted are Geordo’s.

In Ch. 17.5 we have our first bonus chapter, which gives us a special look into Geordo’s feelings for Katarina. So far, Geordo is the only one who has received this treatment. 

Now that doesn’t mean others won’t, but I personally think that chapter is very sweet and romantic, so given that it’s Geordo’s chapter is another point for him.

Finally given how the story was supposed to end at Vol 2.

It’s very interesting to me that the last chapter, is from Geordo’s POV. We get to see his view on their relationship and his feelings for Katarina, as well as the water kiss scene.

Geordo gives a brief summary of each of the characters. More importantly he thinks about how is not pleased that everyone else is in love with Katarina and how he might lose her, but he does admit that he’s okay with things staying like this for awhile longer. 

Largely because Katarina is so happy.

I genuinely do think Geordo has the best shot of ending up with Katarina out of all the characters. 

Now whether I think that because I ship him and Katarina or whether I ship Geordo x Katarina because I think he has the best chance  is difficult to say. Probably both.
