What makes someone feel like they’re at home? 

It’s something that you’ve been pondering ever since you found yourself awakening deep in a forest with no recollection on how you ended up there. It was most likely turning dark, judging by the small glimpses of the setting sun through the leaves. And yet you weren’t afraid. Despite the towering pine trees above you and the eerie sound of silence that surrounded you, you didn’t feel fear - in fact, you knew exactly where to go from the moment you brushed the dirt off your uniform.

The meaning of a home varies from person to person. It can relate to a place where they live, it can be in the arms of their loved one, in the company of their closest friends or at a place where they feel the most at peace.

Or a home can be all of that. 

Home can be a lot of things. And as you emerge from the woods to the pavement leading towards a distant building, only visible because of the barely lit spotlights near the gate. Its only purpose being to barely illuminate the many steps leading towards the house that was sitting on a barren hill, you realize that for you - a home is exactly a lot of things.

Home is a run-down building in need of a desperate renovation that’s nestled at the backside of a huge campus. Hidden in plain sight from the public and yet abandoned for years until your inevitable arrival. Home can be a building whose interior was more fit to be starred in a horror movie than an actual place for someone to live in, with plumbing and insulation needing to be looked at, but has been left behind by time to wither away.

Home is a barren building, with its only company being that of 3 ghosts that notice you faster than the other 3 people inside the lounge. The ones who had inhabited the run down building and liked to play pranks of passerbyers, but that also yearned for some conversation with another being than themselves. The very same ghosts that tell the other 3 of your arrival.

Home is the abandoned building before you with the outdated insulation that lets you hear the exact moment the loud chattering come to an abrupt halt inside, the creaking of worn wood being put to the test by numerous weights running over it before the entrance door is slammed open.

Home is the small creature that immediately throws himself into your arms without a prior notice, its warm body serving as a good source of heat for you. And you merely chuckle as he bangs his paws against your vest, small sniffles escaping him but refusing to cry in front of you: “Do you know how worried everyone has been!?” he reprimands, and you can only smile apologetically as you ruffle his head, “I’m sorry, Grim.” you mutter, the “cat” only huffing in response to your apology, “You owe me a lifetime's worth of tuna cans for this blunder, underling.”

Home is the presence of two other people before you, who can do nothing but stare in shock at your presence. The redhead before you blinking owlishly while trying to utter a sentence, while his blue haired dorm mate staring at you with widened eyes and an agape mouth, “A-Are you even aware how much time has passed?” is what Deuce is eventually able to utter out.

“I don’t, and I’m sorry. I didn’t think I would be gone for that long either.” you explain, cradling Grim into your arms who was still lecturing you, but his claws that have a vice grip on your blazer tells another story. Ace only sighs and only flicks your forehead in return, your small yelp making him smirk: “Well at least we know it ain’t an illusion.” to which you only laugh at while rubbing the sore spot on your forehead.

Home is exactly that for you. A run down building at the corner of an island, the company of 3 ghosts, a gray companion that’s been by your side since your first arrival, and the two friends who had been by your side shortly after and sticking with you through so many incidents, “Welcome home, [Name].”

Igor is a large ceramic pitcher of creams with small bubbles around the rim sitting on an old, worn, pale brown-grey kitchen table in a cabin in a misty summer morning with overgrown wild grass and those furry purple flowers sprouting everywhere outside. The table has long white legs that don't sit evenly, the cream rippling from the centre.

Charity is a palm-sized white plate of strawberries that have been sitting on a wooden island, aged, that were warmed by the sun flittering through the window of her cottage and the heat of her heart as she moves about the kitchen.

Sirius is gingerbread baking in an oven in another room while he's grabbing a friend from behind in front of a large, red brick fireplace. It's cold enough to snow outside, but it doesn't, and a record player from upstairs signs Christmas songs.

Remus is grass after a rain that sticks to his bare feet with water adhesive. Thin, muddy puddles splash around his skin and small snails no larger than a fingernail inspect his ankles.

James is the leftover juice squirting over his forearms from shredding an orange peel above a bowl of protein yogurt in a white, messy kitchen, while the sun rises and he prepares to greet the waking world.

Regulus is the slather of sputtering sunscreen rubbed into the curvature of his pink ears, back turned to the laughs of his friends as they dip into and splash around a crystal blue pool with a black iron fence separating them from the warm world.

Evan is a chopped slab of wild wood tossed into a nighttime brick campfire, bugs quieting and ambers flittering below his knees, his company placing a hand on his shoulder that causes him to look up as they sit beside him on a damp log.

Barty is rubbing alcohol splattering all over the mahogany bathroom as it soaks into a papercut on his right index finger, the squeak of his bare feet pulling across the floor in distasteful shock.

Severus is the first bite into a dark plumb that spreads long white fingers with sharp nails, the lean on a couch to sink his teeth into it in a dark, sleepy living room warmed by a shirt that doesn't fit him, and the rub of his foot over the carpet and coffee table to know he hasn't spilled a drop.

Aurora is the steam of fresh black vanilla coffee placed between the pages of And Then There Were None as she nuzzles herself against the arm of her cozy burgundy couch and the gentle burn of it sliding down her throat as the newest murder is revealed.

Bowser's longtime flame has officially tied the knot, she's shooting off fireworks to celebrate, she's leaving the country on a world tour honeymoon, she's taken out an actual literal billboard on the road between their cities to showcase the wedding photos

So Bowser's like hey, I'm not stupid, I can see you're over it, you don't have to rub it in my face, but he can't even say that because she's blocked him on everything

And he was GOING to hire a skywriter to spell it out over the wedding, but the skywriting company said there was a conflict with the fireworks company and they couldn't get clearance, and Bowser is halfway through checking his own plane to see if he can rig something up when he realizes hey, this is kinda pathetic

They are both extremely over-the-top people and it's hard not to escalate when you're both filthy rich.

So Peach and Mario are off on a year-long world tour honeymoon, and Mario privately offered to let Luigi tag along, so he's feeling pretty pathetic himself.

And Mario SAYS they'll still run the business together, but Luigi has seen Peach's schedule as...governor? President? Monarch? And it's pretty packed, and Mario already has his own dedicated bodyguard from her retinue, and Luigi is picking up a lot more clearly than his brother how things are gonna change

For the better! Mario's gonna love the parties and meeting people and playing sports with actual athletes and driving sports cars on closed professional tracks against real racers, and he can fix a sink but he's got the brains to fix a city's infrastructure too. He's gonna do great.

And Luigi...Luigi will be fine. Really! One-man plumbing business. He can do this. Except other businesses are already poaching their customers on the premise that Mario is retired and the Mario Brothers will be shutting down, and the only way Luigi can counter that is by cashing in on his brother's fame to get people's attention. Which, no thanks.

So he's just come out of the tropical storm of wedding prep and parties exhausted and ready to take a break, but he needs to scramble as the business dissolves under his feet, and their house is paid off and bills should be fine but it's such a gut punch to see how easily his life crumbles without his brother, and Luigi is TIRED. Luigi wants a BREAK. Luigi wants someone rich and fun and good-looking to swoop in and take HIM on a vacation.

"Maybe I should get a rich husband to take care of me," he mumbles into the newspaper draped over his face, covered in ads for rival businesses and Peach's honeymoon tour.

And you know...that's an idea. That's a real idea. He's already been on blind dates, there's always somebody who has a gay nephew or cousin or coworker who would LOVE a tall strong man like Luigi, they're sure~! So what if he picks out his own guy? And if they don't click, he can just shrug it off as them not being rich enough for him. That's believable, there's enough photos of him at the palace and Mushroom-Wimbledon and Mushroom-Kentucky Derby to say he's developed a taste for the good life.

In all honesty, he HAS developed a taste for the good life. Not high teas and little cucumber sandwiches, but being able to drop everything and go to an island, or play a round of golf, or picnic in the countryside, or play Indiana Jones in desert ruins while Peach is off hobnobbing with local rulers. He had fun. And it would be even more fun if he wasn't tagging along after his brother, if it was someone doing those things for HIM, because they liked him and wanted to impress him and--and spoil him, he makes himself acknowledge. He wants to be spoiled. He wants to be...a sugar baby.

Cue montage! Luigi is a good looking fella, but he's also visually Green Mario, and the idea is to NOT leech off his brother's rep. The mustache goes. The overalls have already been retired. No more baseball cap keeping his thick wavy hair out of his face, no more sturdy waterproof work boots. He regrets getting rid of the mustache, and starts growing a five-o-clock shadow. Maybe he'll grow a beard, those are trendy.

That's the picture that pops up in Bowser's inbox as he sorts through correspondence.

 He's pulling back and being really honest with himself about what he actually wants. And honestly? Peach isn't it. Not anymore. It was a painful revelation, but a necessary one. She's not the same hyper-giggly cheerleader type he met in university, and he's not the party boy rugby jock he was back then either. He doesn't need a hot blonde girl on his arm to impress his teammates and stop any ugly rumors in their tracks. He doesn't need to beat anybody up for saying he's gay. And honestly, it was freaking exhausting trying to keep up with Peach's schedule when he was a young adult with just classes and games to worry about, now that's he's mumble-something years old and has his own country to run, he couldn't imagine trying to do half of the things she has packed into her schedule.

So...good for her. She got that guy who loves being social and making a bajillion new friends without being rude to them and can probably stay in the background and let her shine without it chafing, either. Good for her. He is genuinely happy for her.

He has a hard time conveying that to the cowering housekeepers as he finishes smashing the last of her portraits into bits, but he doesn't pay them to understand him, just obey him, so he tells them to sweep it up and stomps back to his office.

He needs more people like that in his life, he thinks, if he's being honest. He needs someone who won't argue him in circles or make him feel stupid debating political policy or hint that his family are tyrants. His family gets stuff DONE, okay, no need to go through six layers of wishy-washy old toads and delicately manage public image in the process. Say it and it is so, and the people will see that their needs are met and be grateful. That's the Bowser way.

 Romantically, what does he need? He makes a little list.

1. Hot.

2. No arguing.

3. No criticizing or trying to change him.

4. No pink or girly.

5. Just...hot okay? A hot dude. There, he said it. A hot dude he can take on dates who won't try to fix him, who won't think there's anything WRONG with him that needs fixing, somebody who can just be hot and pretty and hang around making him look good without getting in his way or trying to take over.

Ugh. He needs a Mario, that's what he needs, somebody to quietly stand around and smile at him and feed him cake. But way hotter. Way, WAY hotter.

 He quits glaring at Peach's wedding ads long enough to type out a basic list of demands and send it to a matchmaking service. (It's a sugar baby service, but he'll be damned if he calls it that.) He's not doing ANY work for this relationship. He's rich, he's powerful, he's reasonably attractive, he thinks? Got a bit of a gut since college but he's still got muscle. Whatever, he's got a castle and a fleet of cool cars and enough money to spoil the hell out of TEN thirsty twinks, whoever he picks can keep their mouth shut about his beer belly. No, he's going full Lizzo, he's not considering anyone unless they LOVE his body. He's rich enough to afford that.

He's all set to send that pic to his potential matches, but then Luigi's pic pops into his inbox, and he panics and switches. He's not trying to scare matches off, that would be self-sabotaging. And he's a fun guy, not some bum who gets drunk and passes out on a deck chair, that was ONE TIME and he was recovering from sunburn, you didn't need to snap a picture of it, guys. Whatever. Fun in the sun dad bod pic, that should be enough to reel in a boyfriend.

So. Bowser is a smart man, and the ruler of a kingdom. He does have bodyguards, and he designs most of his own security systems. The service will weed out the scammers, but he's investigating his matches himself, and Luigi is...not unknown to him. He's probably wildly unrecognizable to most people post-makeover, but Bowser was stalking Peach's wedding and has dossiers on everyone in the wedding party. He KNOWS what his ex-rival's brother looks like without a hat.

The only question is WHY. Is this a game? A joke? A sick trap? Why is he doing this?

"Why are you doing this?" is the first message he sends through the service.

And boy oh boy is that the question of the hour, Luigi thinks, staring at it. He has no idea who's he writing to, the...DADDIES are wealthy and important enough to warrant a bit of identity protection. He'll get a picture in advance of any meetings, but for now he's flying blind.

He's not gonna dump his whole life's story on a stranger, and he doesn't need to justify his decisions to anybody. He's not hurting for company, or money, so why is he doing this?

"I want to take a break and have fun with someone who can afford to take me nice places and do cool things" is what he decides on. It's true.

The rest is just them going nice places and doing cool things together. No drama, no schemes, no misunderstandings or second-guessing about why they’re there. Bowser pays for everything, and gives Luigi some spending money besides. Luigi works hard to relax and be sexy and flirty and fun. It helps that Bowser is so comfy to cuddle with, and actually taller than him, which is impressive.

He is vaguely aware that he is dating Peach's ex, he figures that out around the third date or so, but the guy is remarkably chill compared to how she described him, (and in this world Peach's security detail handled any incidents, there was no kidnapping (recently,) and the Mario brothers weren't heroes who needed to curb-stomp anyone, so Luigi has never met Bowser directly.)

Bowser is keenly aware that he is dating Peach's brother-in-law, but he works hard to relax, not obsess over anything, and just be cool and fun to hang out with. It helps that Luigi is super hot, a little goofy when he relaxes, and enjoys draping himself over Bowser while they lounge on the beach, or on a train ride through the mountains, or a tour of wine country. Lots of hot guy draped all over him while people stare enviously.

It's definitely envy, nothing to do with how Bowser just chugged half a bottle of merlot. He needed to wash the taste of that horrible rosé out of his mouth, okay? Who bottled that, a skunk? Horrible bouquet. Horrible. Luigi, buzzed and giggly and tucked up against Bowser's side staring at him adoringly, thinks Bowser is the funniest, wittiest guy in the world. They should definitely get out of there. The proprietors sell them a case of the merlot and gently suggest that the gentlemen switch to cheese tasting now, so they do.

Bowser's driver takes them on a long ride up the coast, and they have dinner at a beach chateau at sunset and listen to the cresting waves as the stars come out, and Luigi thinks this is exactly what he needed.

And Bowser just spent a long weekend out of his workshop and not buried in paperwork, and he's got some nice wine and stories to charm some diplomat who's visiting next week, and hey maybe Luigi can handle the charming and let Bowser do the diplomacy, or maybe he'll just sit at the dinner table eating fancy food and looking pretty while Bowser takes care of everything.

Man, it's good to be the king. Especially when you've got a doll like this by your side, cheering you on, waiting to see what you’ll do next. He needed this, this ego stroking and taking care of someone, showing off for them. Not running after a pink velvet track suit who's got a million clubs and committees and parties to coordinate. And wow, he hasn't thought about her in a while. A few days, at least. And he doesn't want to think of her now, under the stars, with a fuzzy face nuzzling his neck and strong hands slowly petting down his chest hair and over his belly. He's good. He’s good.

­­Interview over, employment secured. But there was no certainty that you could grasp, nothing to latch on to. It was fine though, you would savour the moments. You had been hoping for this for so long, even the gift of attention from Edward Nigma was enough to satisfy you. And you were happy to endure his difficult nature, especially now that you knew he actually preferred to have someone who had a limit.

Following behind him as he led you through the corridors, you could feel your mind wandering. Not intending to do so, but managing it anyway, you made ample notes on the way his slender frame carried more muscle than you had imagined it would. It must have been something to do with the images you’d seen of him, or the preconceptions you made based on his more intellectual activities over the physical ones. Either way, you appreciated it, in a way that made you feel almost guilty. But your mind snapped back to attention as he turned to you, strong forearms gripping the large iron handle of the door you had reached.

“Are you ready to witness my mastery, first-hand?”

With his self-assured grin, he shifted the heavy handle, exposing you to the damp, stifling room beyond. The Gotham Water Company. The sewers. Edward took a deep breath in, throwing his arms out to the side, as though displaying to you the majesty of something more than just the dingy, damp tunnels.

“Ah, the smell of genius.”

As you let yourself giggle, Edward flashed you a sincere smile this time as he stepped through the door, one that suggested that however long he had worked alone, he still enjoyed an audience.

The space beyond the heavy door was different to the areas of the lair you had seen so far. It looked liveable, there was at least flooring, not covered by mud and grime, and the bricks on the wall were dry enough that Edward had fixed appropriate lighting and boards for his various plans and notes. As well as one dedicated solely to Batman, which admittedly was concerning in its detail and size.

Edward gestured vaguely at the doors on your right, speaking sharp and short.

“First one is the bathroom. Although, while my practical skills have ensured that the plumbing is effective and adequate, it’s not particularly aesthetically pleasing. Second one is my bedroom. Don’t go in there. And the third one is my office. Please try and avoid interrupting me if I’m working at my desk. It’ll only distract me. And you’ll cloud the atmosphere. There’s never been less than a 150 IG beyond that door, and it would be nice to keep it that way.”

Beyond the narrow corridor that led off to the smaller rooms, closed off to you for now, there was a wide open space, arched ceiling, bricked walls, and remarkably some warm comfort in the form of several rugs which were scattered around.

“This is-”

“You have a little living space?”

“Why are you surprised?”

Scolding yourself, you tried to remain casual and light-hearted, though you were panicking over the offense you seemed to have caused him.

“I just thought you… I didn’t think you lived.”

“Hm… a reasonable, if not stupid, assumption. But everyone needs to unwind, don’t you think?”

Stepping further into the space you could make out a refrigerator, two hobs, a microwave oven and a sink, accompanied by a moveable island and a cardboard box filled with pots and dishes. Beside it, there was a table with a single chair. And in the middle of the room, a sofa that was bursting at every seam, and a small television.

“I suppose so. Though, if I’m being honest…”

“I encourage it.”

“When I think of you relaxing, I think of puzzles and light crime. Not television.”

“Ah, so you don’t know me as well as you thought you might.”

You could briefly make out his light smile as he breezed past you to the other side of the room, where a further three doors sat.

“First one is a closet, you can feel free to use this. Second one is my closet. Third one is your bedroom. I’ll leave you to settle in.”

“Wait!”

Edward was already walking away from you when you turned to him.

“So I really have to… live here? With you?”

“Where else are you going to go?”

There was no emotion on his face. He spoke with cold facts, though a lingering sense of irritation at your inability, or unwillingness, to understand what he was saying, was building up behind his neutral façade.

“I don’t know… but won’t that be weird?”

“Not as weird as having you interrupt me every morning or having the GCPD stomping in here because there’s been a lot of activity at the door. You can leave now, if you want. Nothing lost, nothing gained. For me anyway. You’ll have lost the opportunity of a lifetime.”

Edward turned again, walking away from you, not waiting to hear your answer. Most likely, you assumed, because he knew what you were going to do.

“Ok, sure. I’ll… stay.”

Your room was bare. Basic. But the floor was clean and the brick on the walls was less damaged than some of the others. As you sat on the undressed bed, you considered why he might have set this room aside in the first place, or whether he had thrown it together for you, specifically. To save yourself from the emotional reaction, you pushed it out of your mind. And to avoid letting the thought linger, you left the room, with no intentions of setting foot back in it until you absolutely had to.

Standing in the living space, still entirely taken back by even the minimal décor Edward had deigned to scatter around the place, you followed Edward’s footsteps before he had left you to your room, heading through the arched hallway you hadn’t been down yet. As you rounded the corner you were met by his workshop. And crouched in the corner by some miscellaneous wires was Edward himself.

Approaching him silently from behind, you stood still, observing him. Though you were certain he had heard your footsteps, he didn’t react to your presence, instead seeming content to let you watch him work. You were in awe of him. In the way his fingers moved with such purposeful intention and accuracy, though entirely swift and nimble. The way the veins and tendons on the backs of his hands moved with his hands as he worked. Realising that you might have seemed intense, or rather intensely strange, just staring at him, you spoke.

“So… what is it you expect of me?”

“I expect you to annoy me and to get in my way, so you are definitely meeting those expectations thus far. Let’s meet again to discuss it at your performance review next week.”

Eventually, he sighed, turning to you when he realised that you weren’t going to respond to him, instead waiting for a reasonable answer to his question. It was painful to put into practice, but you knew you had to offer him a resistance to his attitude and a resilience in the face of it.

“I’ll tell you what I would like you to do when I need you to do it. And at that point, first and foremost, what I would like it for you to do what you’re told to do the first time I tell you to do it. If you can manage that then I won’t have to kill you off.”

“Noted.”

“You’re only here until I can finish my robots. And if you’re lucky, I might let you help me with that project.”

“So, to clarify, you want me to assist in your creation of my own replacement.”

“Of course. Why don’t you start by getting out of my way. I’m feeling generous. Take some free time to admire my work. You’ll find it around the work space. There is a system, a method to the madness down here. Try and see if you can pinpoint it!”

He seemed genuinely excited to finally be posing you a challenge, and his grin only sealed that assumption.

“Oh, there’s a radio on the table. Take it. This is a big space, and you… look like you could get lost easily.”

“Perfect. Thank you.”

Once you were far enough into the far reaches of the cavernous workspace, you realised he wasn’t just insulting your intelligence. From the main space, there were multiple tunnels, all leading off in different directions, and within them, tunnels that veered off from tunnels. It was maze-like, incomprehensible. Which was probably why Edward liked it down there. It suited him.

There wasn’t a path you followed that didn’t lead to some sort of artifact, a testament to Edward’s inability, it seemed, to focus on one great creation, or to complete one for that matter. Strewn all over the place were half-finished and unrecognisable pieces of machinery, inventions that could be grand, but were left half-finished and abandoned for something he deemed to be more challenging or of more intellectual, or criminal, advantage.

As you pondered a piece as you might at an art gallery, you reached your fingers out, over the imaginary red rope, to touch the smooth curve of the metal that encased whatever it was that lurked beneath, a sharp crackling drew a small yelp from your throat that echoed and tingled against the bizarre art.

"… 3751945 a-a-a-and… 4! Oh, is-i-is this thing on-on? I was just mentally c-calculating pi to-t-t-to ten trillion digits. Yes-es-s, I'm that g-g-good. Anyway-w-w-ay where are you? I'd l-l-like to make sure you're n-not up to anything nefarious-ious or idiotic-tic-or-idiotic. In fact, why am I asking-ing you, as though you would know y-you-would-know! Stay right w-w-wh-where you are, I'll find you f-f-find-you.”

As the radio crackled again, signifying the end of his message, you took a shaky breath in. The implication of him coming to get you, threatening and nerve-wracking as it was, was also strangely… captivating, or exciting. You couldn’t quite place it. But you felt something beyond what you assumed were his intentions.

You waited patiently for his arrival, which was preceded by the heavy footsteps he created in his boots.

“Ah, you really are admiring my work. It’s nice to have some appreciation that isn’t forced.”

“Even if I don’t understand it, huh?”

He raised an eyebrow, the goggles balancing on his forehead shifting with the movement.

“Yes. Indeed. Anyway! Let me show you something special, as a treat.”

“You’re in the habit of giving out treats?”

“Good behaviour should always be rewarded. A motivated… employee, I suppose… is a happy one! Now, follow me.”

Moving quickly through the tunnels and hallways, no hesitation for direction through the endless options of similar paths, Edward led you to a small room with a large, barred window. He stood to the side of it, gesturing his hand, one ‘tah-dah’ short of complete showboating.

“The observation deck. Come and glance upon true genius.”

You stepped beside him with a smile, looking onto the painted path below as Edward closed the gap between you.

“A racetrack?”

“Of sorts! I mean, it is, yes. But with added challenges.”

He pressed a button off to the side, a metallic crunching quickly giving way to a red cube which jutted out from the wall.

The Ice Man Cometh

This is a blog of the past.  I often think of this “story” when it’s hot and humid out.  So here it is again.

The past few weeks have been very un-Nantucket as far as the heat and the extreme humidity.  When I was a child and even a teenager, I remember that we always wore long pants and even sweaters in the summer evenings on island.  This does not seem to be the norm any longer unfortunately.  The heat also leads me to think about staying cool and what generations before us did to preserve food. 

Long before modern refrigeration, ice was used for preserving foods. Although the use of ice brought an end to salting and drying fish for local markets, with railroad development and western expansion in the 1850s, salt fish was still being shipped to inland domestic markets as well as abroad. As the fishing industry grew on Nantucket and elsewhere, however, so did the need for ice to keep the catch fresh for market.

On Nantucket, when a hard freeze produced ice of the necessary thickness, blocks were cut from Maxcey’s and Washing Ponds and the North Head of Hummock Pond and stored in nearby icehouses. This was a fairly long and tricky process that took skill to make sure the ice was the right thickness and that one did not fall through the ice.  Mainland icehouses typically used sawdust for insulation, but Nantucket ice was insulated with beach grass, seaweed, and eelgrass—sawdust not being readily available here.  The iceman would drive his cart around the streets with usually a gaggle of children trailing behind – or hitching a secretive ride on the back of the cart – hoping for a piece of ice to suck on and cool off with – back when something that simple was a pure delicacy.

When electricity was introduced on Nantucket in 1889, cutting pond ice was no longer necessary.  Captain John “Jack” Killen built the first ice-making plant, on Straight Wharf, opening it on May 5, 1902.  Several other plants, including that of the Island Service Company, followed—all operating until the Great Depression.  Nantucket’s early ice-making plants were established primarily for packing fish and shellfish, which were shipped in barrels or fish boxes layered with ice. Fishermen both on and off-island would stock up on ice before going out on long trips, and it is said that island ice was of a much higher quality than that from plants off-island—perhaps because of the purity of Nantucket’s water.

Some people still cut ice.  My parents had an elderly friend, now gone, and his family owned – and I assume still owns – a camp of cottages from the 19th century up in New Hampshire.  In the winter, the entire family shows up to harvest ice and store it in the icehouse.  The ice is then used in each of the cottages during the summer since they have no electricity or plumbing.  It is an art that is almost gone but happily there are still a few who have passed down the knowledge and skill for harvesting ice.  I recently took a look at his obituary and was blown away – I remember him for ice harvesting – but wow what a life!  One of service and seeking justice.
