so. first of all I don't know anything. take everything with a massive grain of salt
second - this is talking about housing in a very capital-y framework which is not necessarily reflective of viewpoints I hold
I don't want to engage directly with the original post I'm responding to here, but re: private construction vs gvt-owned construction of housing - when it comes to affordable housing in California in particular (where around half of homeless people in the US live), there's an obvious(?) contributor - zoning laws that prevent housing from being built in sufficient quantity to keep prices low, market-style. some people respond to this with "if we relax zoning and incentivize private construction, the problem will fix itself". Then there's the "por que no los dos" approach to public vs private investment in housing, which seems kind of a no-brainer on its face (have state-sponsored construction alongside private construction) - but I think there's a major piece missing to that, which is that - even accepting the premise of that framing - scarcity, like, exists? And particularly in construction labor, particularly in California, supply is slow to respond to demand. For years there's been an diminishing number of construction workers (and in many cases plumbers, electricians, etc) as the pace of construction has been kept slow and things like computer labs have supplanted wood shop/metal shop in schools - AND as the cost of living has increased, it's been harder to get by on manual labor wages, pushing people already in the field out of it. Part of the reason housing is more expensive to build in CA, even when it's allowed, is that labor and materials are scarce. (This is ofc in addition to addl regulations, environmental review hurdles, etc.)
The other side of public v private construction that I don't think is acknowledged as much (among people already gung-ho about building more housing) is that when there's such a tight market, the first thing to be built with private capital is the thing which sells for the most money. Okay, that people talk about. But if the response is "but let them keep building and it will eventually get to an equilibrium/drive prices down" - I don't think that's very reassuring? The problem is present now. And say housing prices drop from $3000/month for a one bedroom apartment in SF to $2000/month - that's a significant enough drop to open the market to people who previously didn't move there because it's too expensive but not nearly enough to make the prevailing wage for, e.g., a city janitor ($17.29/hr) or a construction worker hauling material at a site ($22.50/hr) super tenable. More people move in, but the low end of the market doesn't budge until all the upper tiers have been satisfied - and meanwhile, the people building and taking care of those buildings still can't afford to live in them. This seems like it will keep the cost of construction fairly high for a fairly extended period of time, right?
one answer is to increase pay for construction workers - with the consequence of increasing the cost of construction and making the cheaper units even more unfavorable to build (for investors). this is already happening to some degree.
So it seems, especially with the time it takes to get additional people into the construction industry, like the #1 priority should be public funding for the type of housing least attractive to investors and most consequential for the people who need it most - low-cost affordable housing. other priorities should absolutely be re-incentivizing the trades, rezoning to allow much denser housing in the sprawl, etc. but in terms of the massive deficit of housing and homelessness crisis, it really seems like priority one should be building cheap now. b/c the longer it takes to get housing, the more expensive it'll get.
(sidebar: gvt-owned housing also may allow the government to avoid some funding/paperwork issues like what's happened with the Cecil Hotel, though given how much of a trainwreck they made of it, I don't know how much hope I can have)
(sidebar 2: don't have the links handy but I'm reminded of two studies - one that showed that median rents in an area increased when rent control was implemented, one that found that rents increased when rent control was removed.)
@triviallytrue I don't know if any of this is of interest - thoughts?

Datasouls
TFJ
Japanese
Dating
Exercise
Medallion Works
Sink
Game backlog
New job
This years' resolutions are underway, and it's kinda slow going? For March, I said I wanted to:
...I think I need to focus on getting J/A’s first case done, since it’s in the home stretch. That and a couple recaps, and probably dealing with the sink situation if I can.
I did do the recaps, and I did purchase a new faucet for the sink, but installation turned out to not be as DIYable as I'd have liked, so I've got to call a plumber. J/A's first case is not done yet, but I made substantial progress- the players have basically solved the important parts of the howdunit, and I just need to update with the transition to the final scene and culprit accusation (which has been tricky to write because I really didn't tie the whodunit to the howdunit properly.)
I might've finished it except that I didn't focus on it the way I imagined I would- I did some work on Datasouls and a lot of work on Medallion Works, plus some work on a new secret project that was very fun to work on. It wasn't an unproductive month- I just discovered about as much new work that needed doing as I actually did.
(Oh, I also posted a dating profile to Date Me Directory, which may or may not go anywhere. I'm finding that all the coolest and most compatible people are in SF, where I'm not, and so the next steps there might be getting a job there and moving.)
April, I'm going to try to finish J/A for real this time and get back on the horse with Japanese practice. I expect I'll also do a bunch on MW and ???, same as March, and also probably the sink thing since it's just a matter of calling a plumber now.

Jane Kim’s March 5, 2024 San Francisco Voter Guide
It’s hard to believe that I drafted my first voter guide in November 2004. Twenty years and countless endorsements later, here we go again! I am only providing additional insight for contested races.  If you’re looking for another great voter guide, check out my fave SF League of Pissed Off Voters.  I also appreciated the non-partisan analysis provided by San Francisco Public Press.
US Senate: Barbara Lee
From becoming the first black cheerleader in her high school after fighting to desegregate her squad to casting the sole vote in Congress against authorizing the war in Afghanistan in 2001 (history has validated her), Barbara Lee has been fearless and principled.  A Nobel Peace Prize nominee, Lee is the only US Senate candidate who has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. As the first state to send two women to the US Senate, I would be disappointed to forward two men.  We have two incredibly smart and courageous women candidates running– Congresswomen Barbara Lee and Katie Porter. This March, I’m voting Barbie for US Senate!
US Congress: Nancy Pelosi
State Assembly: Matt Haney, AD 17 and David Lee, AD 19
David has been an active voice and organizer in San Francisco’s Chinese American community since he started the Chinese American Voter Education Project 20 years ago registering thousands of API voters.  David is an earnest and sincere neighborhood advocate. While he may not be a nerdy wonk, I know he will fight for tenants, small businesses, and neighborhood safety issues.  He promises to be a champion to raise the statewide minimum wage and as a community college educator, fight to expand tuition-free community college tuition statewide.
Judges: Michael Begert and Patrick Thompson
Tumblr media
Endorsed by all 48 SF Superior Court judges, San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco Democratic Party and the League of Pissed Off Voters (an unusual alliance indeed), this race has become a blatant political stunt. Unable to blame the District Attorney for all of San Francisco's woes, the right has shifted their attack to appointed judges vetted by an extensive and rigorous process led by the state. Appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Governor Gavin Newsom respectively, they are hardly radicals but demonstrably qualified.
San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee: Labor and Working Families Slate and ME!
This super down ballot race used to attract an endless list of candidates and ZERO dollars.  This year, a few people are pouring $1.1M to defeat our slate which includes educators, a nurse, plumber, elevator mechanic, healthcare worker, youth activists, union organizers, and even an attorney/drag queen.
My amazing slate mates are busting their quads, volunteering countless hours to walk hilly precincts, canvass farmers markets to win VOLUNTEER positions on the San Francisco Democratic Party.  Most of the year, committee members register voters and participate in phone banking efforts to flip red seats blue, not only in California but across the nation. We just want a corporate-free Democratic Party in our city. And we love San Francisco.
Don’t worry, you’ll always hear from people who have millions to spend to influence elections- do they need the Democratic Party too?
Here is our slate in the order we are listed on the ballot!
Tumblr media
Proposition A: $300M Affordable Housing Bond: YES, YES, YES
Endorsed by the Mayor, the entire Board of Supervisors and literally everyone else who endorses anything (minus the SF Republican Party), we need this revenue source to continue to build and preserve affordable and middle income housing in San Francisco.
Proposition B: Police Officer Staffing Levels Conditioned on Future Tax Funding: No
This is not a terrible measure– it raises minimum police staffing levels if the city raises new revenue. However, I believe the Mayor and Board of Supervisors should set police staffing numbers, not the voters.
Proposition C: Real Estate Transfer Tax Break for Developers: No
Prop C provides tax breaks for downtown office developers who sell their building after converting it to market rate housing. I would have supported this largely symbolic gesture– symbolic because very few office buildings can convert to housing due to high costs and structural limitations. HOWEVER, this measure dangerously authorizes the Board of Supervisors to reverse prior victories in real estate transfer taxes that fund essential initiatives like FREE CITY COLLEGE and street tree maintenance (yes the very measure I authored in 2016) and affordable housing.
Side note–prior to 2016, San Francisco homeowners briefly had to shoulder the burden of street tree maintenance, which was both substantial and perplexing. This measure jeopardizes this revenue.
Proposition E: Blank Check on Police Surveillance and Car Chases: No, No, No
This one is all over the place and a perfect example of why I do not believe in legislating via the ballot box.  SF Chronicle calls it “a fistful of dubious public safety ideas at the wall in hope one sticks.”
Proposition E is a package of policy changes that would allow the San Francisco Police Department to engage in more high-speed chases, install security cameras in public spaces (currently approved by a civilian oversight body) and test surveillance technology (ie. drones and facial recognition) on the public without oversight. It would also allow police to file fewer reports on use of force against members of the public.
There is one good idea— we should reduce how much time police officers spend on administrative paperwork so cops are on the streets instead of behind desks but there is no teeth to make this happen. And I am open to cops utilizing technological advances in their work- should cops have drones to follow active pursuits?  Maybe, but I don’t want voters to write this blank check.  This job belongs to the people we elect– the Mayor and Board of Supervisors who can study recommendations made by our SFPD Chief and the civilian oversight commission, evaluate studies and weigh public comment.
But there are some terrible ideas such as expanding police chases on congested San Francisco streets. I witnessed the devastating consequences when my best friend was struck by a fleeing vehicle two years ago. The perpetrator got away (but eventually arrested months later) but my friend continues to endure life-altering injuries. While no blame falls on the SFPD officer, the pursuit inflicted irreversible harm without achieving its intended outcome.
It’s opposed by the ACLU, Electronic Frontier Foundation, San Francisco Bar Association and League of Women Voters.
Proposition F: Drug Screenings for Welfare Recipients: Just say NO
During the “War on Drugs” of the 80’s and 90’s, we targeted poor people for drug usage and guess what? The policy failed to decrease usage and only pushed our most vulnerable neighbors away from assistance.  Reverting to this Republican strategy, endorsed by the Trump administration and poorly implemented in red states like Alabama and Mississippi, is mind boggling. The estimated annual cost of this program ranges from $500,000 to $1.4 million, partially offset by discontinuing payments to our poorest residents who refuse testing.
Meanwhile, San Francisco has a waiting list of people who actually want treatment.
Let’s look at states who have enacted this– very few applicants get tested and even less come back positive. The most expensive drug testing program was Missouri. Missouri spent a whopping $336,297 in public funds to test 108 individuals out of 32,774 applicants. 11 came back positive.
Elected leaders want to appear like they are doing something about the devastating fentanyl crisis (precipitated by billionaire pharmaceutical conglomerates like Purdue/Sacker family), but THIS IS NOT IT.  Even the San Francisco Chronicle, hardly a bastion for progressive politics, says No on F.
Prop G: 8th Grade Algebra: YES
I fully support offering Algebra in the 8th grade. Frankly I support offering Algebra at any grade students wish to enroll. But this is yet again another symbolic resolution (do you see a pattern?) which is now moot as the Board of Education voted this month to re-offer 8th grade algebra.
If you made it this far, thank you for reading and more importantly, thank you for voting. Agree or disagree, I appreciate you including my perspective in your decision making.
Most importantly, if you are voting by mail, please vote by March 4.  Thousands of ballots go uncounted because people put them in the mailbox on March 5 without checking the final pick up time– these ballots are postmarked March 6 and are therefore invalid.

Trump stood against the upper class. He might define them as: people who live in nice apartments in Manhattan or SF or DC and laugh under their breath if anybody comes from Akron or Tampa. Who eat Thai food and Ethiopian food and anything fusion, think they would gain 200 lbs if they ever stepped in a McDonalds, and won't even speak the name Chick-Fil-A. Who usually go to Ivy League colleges, though Amherst or Berkeley is acceptable if absolutely necessary. Who conspicuously love Broadway (especially Hamilton), LGBT, education, "expertise", mass transit, and foreign anything. They conspicuously hate NASCAR, wrestling, football, "fast food", SUVs, FOX, guns, the South, evangelicals, and reality TV. Who would never get married before age 25 and have cutesy pins about how cats are better than children. Who get jobs in journalism, academia, government, consulting, or anything else with no time-card where you never have to use your hands. Who all have exactly the same political and aesthetic opinions on everything, and think the noblest and most important task imaginable is to gatekeep information in ways that force everyone else to share those opinions too.
(full disclosure: I fit like 2/3 of these descriptors)
Aren't I just describing well-off people? No. Teachers, social workers, grad students, and starving artists may be poor, but can still be upper-class. Pilots, plumbers, and lumber barons are well-off, but not upper-class. Donald Trump is a billionaire, but still recognizably not upper class.  The upper class is a cultural phenomenon.
Scott, buddy, pal, I know you have some fatal allergy to any sort of political theory within three degree of separation of Marxism, and also touching any poli sci or sociology textbooks would cause you to burst into flame, but c’mon man. What the hell is the ‘upper’ in ‘upper class’ actually supposed to mean?

water damage inspector sf emergency plumbing san francisco installing bathroom sink drain emergency plumbing
Water-related issues in your home can quickly escalate from minor annoyances to major emergencies. Whether it’s a burst pipe or a faulty drain, taking swift action is crucial to prevent structural damage and costly repairs. Reliable services like emergency plumbing San Francisco and skilled expertise from a water damage inspector SF are essential to keeping your property safe and functional. Below, we’ll explore the importance of plumbing services, the role of water damage inspectors, and even guide you on installing a bathroom sink drain yourself.
Tumblr media
Why Timely Plumbing Services Matter
Plumbing problems can arise without warning, and when they do, immediate action is vital. Leaking pipes, clogged drains, or overflowing fixtures can quickly lead to water damage, mold growth, and weakened structures. This is why having access to emergency plumbing near me is invaluable.
What sets emergency plumbers apart is their availability and ability to tackle urgent issues effectively. They’re equipped to fix problems like broken water lines, water heater malfunctions, or overflowing sinks, ensuring your home is restored to normal as quickly as possible.
For example, if you’re experiencing a slow leak that’s soaking into your walls, an emergency plumbing San Francisco service can address the issue before it worsens. Plus, they often collaborate with water damage inspectors to fully assess and mitigate risks.
The Role of Water Damage Inspectors
Once the immediate crisis is under control, it’s time to evaluate the extent of the damage. This is where a water damage inspector SF plays a critical role. These trained professionals assess how water has impacted your property, identifying areas that need urgent attention and devising a mitigation plan.
Inspectors check for water intrusion in hidden spots like under flooring, within walls, and around plumbing fixtures. They measure moisture levels, detect potential mold, and offer recommendations on repairs and ongoing maintenance.
Employing a water damage inspector after a plumbing emergency is vital because it ensures no damage goes unnoticed—saving you from larger issues like compromised structural integrity down the line.
DIY Guide to Installing a Bathroom Sink Drain
Not all plumbing tasks require professional help. For smaller projects, such as installing a bathroom sink drain, you can save time and money by tackling them yourself. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you out:
Tools and Materials
Plumber's putty
Drain assembly kit
Wrench
Pipe sealant
Steps
Prepare the Sink Begin by cleaning the drain hole of your sink—this ensures a tight, waterproof seal.
Insert the Drain Flange Apply plumber's putty to the underside of the flange. Press the flange into the drain hole, securing it in place.
Attach the Rubber Washer and Nut From underneath the sink, slide the rubber washer over the drain flange, followed by the locking nut. Tighten them using a wrench.
Install the Drainpipe Attach the drainpipe to the bottom of the sink’s drain flange. Use pipe sealant on threaded connections for a secure, leak-free fit.
Test the Installation Run water through the drain and check for leaks. Tighten fittings as needed to ensure everything is secure.
While installing a drain is fairly straightforward, don’t hesitate to call in emergency plumbing near me if something seems amiss. Professionals can make adjustments to prevent future problems.
The Benefits of Reliable Emergency Plumbing
Having local and trusted plumbing services on hand, like those offered in San Francisco, provides peace of mind. Whether it’s a midnight leak or a weekend pipe burst, they’re ready to solve problems quickly to prevent water damage. Plus, they often provide guidance on regular maintenance to help homeowners avoid emergencies altogether.
By combining quick fixes from emergency plumbers with long-term insights from water damage inspector SF services, homeowners can effectively safeguard their properties. Tackling smaller tasks like installing bathroom sink drains or promptly addressing a minor leak will also save time and money in the long run.
Remember, when it comes to water issues, prevention and preparation are key. Ensure you’ve got reliable experts a call away, and your home will stay safe from unexpected water damage.

#1yrago Surge-taxing Uber as a way relieve urban congestion
Tumblr media
Every city where Uber and Lyft have found a foothold has also faced impossible congestion in the city center; Felix Salmon says this is because drivers are incentivized to come to the city-center despite the traffic (because that's where the fares are) and riders are incentivized to skip public transit when there are a lot of cars around to hail with their apps.
What's more, London's go-to solution to traffic congestion -- levying a tax for drivers entering the city centre -- only works to deter drivers whose reasons for entering the city can be served by opting for public transit. An Uber driver who enters the city on a bus can't then go to work as an Uber driver.
So Salmon proposes that we adopt Uber's own load-balancing tactic for our city centres: surge pricing. When the city is congested, Uber (the company, not the drivers) will have to pay a premium to enter the city. This will raise prices on rides and reduce demand (hailing-app riders are understood to be very price-sensitive and can often substitute things like walking, cycling, public transit, or putting off a journey for getting a ride in a private car).
It's got a neat symmetry to it. You wouldn't have to define congestion zones: just use Uber and Lyft's own realtime telemetry about how many of its cars are stuck in traffic: the more stuck they are, the more expensive it becomes for them to be there, the more expensive their rides would become, the more people would decide not to take Uber or Lyft, the more those cars would leave the congested zone, the less congested it would be. In effect, you'd be balancing the demand signal for cars with a counterbalancing force that downregulated the signal based on negative externalities.
The taxes raised through the system would go to improving public transit, bikeshare, and other Uber and Lyft alternatives, just like London's congestion charge.
But ultimately, this has the same problem that London's congestion fee has: it's regressive. By making it a flat fee, rather than one geared to income, the fee provides a wildly different disincentive to motorists, especially in a city as unequal as London (see also NYC, LA, SF, etc). A $16/day congestion charge can make or break the profitability of a plumber who has to drive their van into Central London to fix a toilet, but it is an infinitesimal expense for a City banker who's making more than a million/year.
Finland, famously, uses a progressive schedule in its disincentive systems: fines for moving violations are geared to your income, so a Nokia exec was once ordered to pay a $103,000 speeding ticket. Where fees, fines and levies are used to shape public behavior, they always run into this problem: either they have to be geared to income, or they present a huge problem for the vast majority and a minor annoyance to the one percent.
It's hard to imagine how you'd tax Uber more for picking up a banker than a janitor, but unless you figure that out, all you're doing is clearing the roads so that bankers don't have to sit in traffic.

Plumber’s Guide on dealing with slow-draining toilets
Toilets drain issues
Dealing with a slow draining toilet can be frustrating. (Photo Credits)
Toilet drain problems can be embarrassing for both a host and a visitor. It can even be nerve-wracking especially if it appears to be clogged, or worse, overflows. So are there easy ways to deal with such a problem, or does one really have to get his hands literally dirty?
Home Repair Geek explains how the drains become suddenly slow, and why this happens.
"When the bowl empties, that means the water has all siphoned out after the initial gush, which is provided by the flood from the tank after you lower the lever. If your toilet is flushing slow, then you may have a problem with the flood waters. Something may be causing the water needed to flood the bowl properly to not do so adequately or in a timely manner."
The full explanation can be found here.
Slow and clogged toilet
Homeguides SF Gate has shared several ways on how to deal with a slow flushing toilet. According to its online post, the first thing a homeowner should try is to use a plunger to help unclog the slow drain. Plumbing Association of San Diego

"Plunge the toilet using a plunger that fits inside the waste opening. Plunging is easy, and if the sluggish flushing is caused by a partial waste blockage, using a plunger will probably remove it. If the toilet exhibits other signs of a blockage, such as backing up, clear the blockage with a toilet auger if plunging doesn't work."
