Rosewood is loosely inspired by Main Line towns in Pennsylvania, many of which are unincorporated communities and thus don't have local governments. given the proximity of Rosewood to Philly, it's likely that Spencer was interning in the Philadelphia Mayor's office (Through the connections of her parents, since she would've only been a rising high school junior??)

She’d perfected this stunt when she was twelve years old.

Her mother’s voice echoed in her mind, cautioning her to always stay a step ahead, to keep her wits sharp. Perhaps it was the universe’s grim way of keeping her alive. But the threat was real: Scratch was in her apartment. Her safe place, the home where her daughter slept, where they all ate, laughed, and breathed. Maybe he’d been looking for Spencer, but if he were thorough—and he always was—he’d find her here. Then, with whatever that gas was, he’d kill her, or worse: he’d twist her mind, make her believe Spencer was hurting her, drive her to the edge of reason, or haunt her with a vision of her late father.

Y/N’s gaze landed on the bathroom vanity, its soft light pooling across the floor. The faint glow leaked under the door, a telltale sign. Think, she urged herself, a silent chant. Think for Clem. Think for Spencer. Think for yourself.

Another look at the vanity showed the medicine cabinet hanging slightly open, left ajar when she’d reached for ibuprofen that morning. Tucked far back in the shadows was an old prescription bottle of hydrocodone, a remnant of a long-past injury she’d meant to discard. If she’d remembered, she would have tossed it long ago, kept it hidden from Spencer’s careful eyes. But there it sat, tucked away, waiting.

Act now.

With trembling fingers, she reached into the cabinet, pulling the bottle out slowly, careful not to make a sound. The cabinet stayed silent, no creaks to betray her. She twisted the cap, dumping the pills into her hand and scattering them out the cracked window above the sink, letting the wind carry them away. Then, without another second to think, she climbed into the bathtub, slumping back against the cold porcelain.

Footsteps sounded in the hall, a calculated, deliberate rhythm as Scratch approached. Her heart pounded against her ribs, but she kept her breaths shallow, her body limp, one hand resting over the edge of the tub, the empty bottle lying loose in her palm.

The bathroom door creaked open.

A low, satisfied chuckle drifted through the room, followed by silence as he took in the scene before him. She stilled, her lungs aching from the strain of barely drawing in air, forcing herself to go completely still, to become the very picture of lifelessness. She focused on the chill of the tub beneath her, on anything that kept her mind from the terror of moving too soon, of him realizing she was faking.

She felt him drawing closer, a menacing shadow towering above her. His breath, sharp and cold, brushed her face as he leaned in. And in that moment, her thoughts raced: grateful for the broken heater that kept the room cold, for every freezing second that helped her mask her pulse. Thoughts of Spencer flashed before her and Clem. Would Spencer be the one to come home and find her here, broken and empty because she’d failed the only thing she’d ever known how to do? Or worse, would he have to tell Clem?

Then, just as suddenly, the air shifted. Scratch’s footsteps receded, and he muttered, almost dismissively, “Lousy way out.”

The front door clicked shut.

Her whole body shuddered as she gasped, air rushing into her burning lungs. She climbed from the tub, her legs shaking as she fumbled to throw the empty bottle out the window, watching it disappear into the alley below. Only then did she reach for her phone, dialing Spencer’s number with hands that wouldn’t quite steady.

“Honey, hi!” he answered on the first ring, cheer in his voice.

“He was here,” she whispered, the words tumbling out. “Scratch. He was in here!”

“What? Where? Are you okay?” Spencer’s tone sharpened, and she could practically see him standing, ready to bolt out the door.

“I’m home. I—I got home early to check if they fixed the heater, and… he came in, maybe ten minutes ago, but he just left.” Her voice trembled, the relief and terror colliding.

“Shit.” He breathed out, voice lowering as he regained control. “We’re coming right now. How did he not find you?”

“I’ll tell you everything when you’re here. Can you—can you send someone to check on Clem?”

“Morgan’s already on his way to pick her up from school. She’ll be safe, I promise.”

The knot in her chest eased a little. “Okay. I’ll see you soon. I love you.”

“I love you too. Just hold on—we’ll be there soon.”

the real reason i shift

i can say im going for the aspect of living different plots (tvd, pll, etc.)

but when it really comes down to it, the more i think, the more i realize why i truly shift:

to be loved.

to be somebodys favorite person.

to be someones #1 choice.

the decline in my mental health is fully based around the fact that the only people i interact with are my parents. i have no friends, and it kills me

i find when i script, i always say stuff like:

because i am nobodys favorite person here, and thats the reason im depressed, because at the end of the day..nobody really cares about me. nobody really knows anything about me.

and thats why shifting means so much to me..i can finally feel love and friendship, something that i haven't had here since grade 5 (im going to grade 11)

PLL: OS (Summer School) 2x03 thoughts

*Spoilers for 2x01-2x03 of Summer School

Okay y'all, so many thoughts. I'm still feeling pretty solid about my predictions from 2x01 & 2x02, but let me go through those and how 2x03 has shifted or solidified my POV.

Christian will be an early suspect because he made the "Bloody Rose" mask, but ultimately is likely innocent. - So I am at least partially correct with this one. He definitely did make a Bloody Rose mask. Whether or not he made the Bloody Rose mask remains to be seen. If he is entirely innocent (as in, he was either commissioned to make the mask, or someone asked to buy it from him after he posted it on social media or something), it seems weird he did not mention this to Tabby when they spoke about it. I also initially thought it was weird that Tabby (and Imogen) were not more freaked out by finding the Bloody Rose & A mask at Christian's, but I need to keep in mind that until the end of this episode, they didn't really believe any of the Bloody Rose stuff was legit. However, I am still sticking with my gut about all this and going with my original theory, which is that Christian will now come under serious suspicion from the girls, since they know Bloody Rose is a real threat at this point.

I'm definitely still sticking with my feeling that Henry/Faran is not a relationship that is long for this world, and Faran is going to be spending quite a bit of screen time with Greg. I still like my theory that Greg & Faran might team up to figure out what's going on with Kelly.

Speaking of, I am still very much on board with my instinct that the Our Mother of Holy Grace church is very much involved with the Bloody Rose scheme. First of all, while I have never been to a Redemption House, and I am not deeply familiar with them, Mouse's "test" felt like it could easily be a scene from one, a "trial by fire" so to speak. Also the imagery of her escaping a burning building feels very "burn in Hell" associated. Another interesting thing about this is that if the church is involved, that means that there could easily be multiple people dressing up as Rose, meaning no one really has an alibi. This is further confused by Imogen's dreams/visions, and Mouse's grandmother's mental state. What is real? What isn't?

No particular "secluded cabin in the woods" evidence either way, so I'm sticking to this one as well.

Okay, now for the new 2x03 thoughts/theories. While this episode had a lot of scenes that didn't directly move the plot forward, they definitely want us feeling suspicious of lots of people right now. We spend a lot of time with the new love interests, so we'll see where that goes.

Jen's financial situation interests me. Noa insists that Jen is "good people" and then we almost immediately have a scene where Jen steals money from work and isn't even very apologetic about it when Noa catches her. It could be easy to wave this off with a "but they met in juvie, so this doesn't seem OOC," but this clearly does take Noa by surprise. So that makes me wonder if Jen's need for cash is going to make a more main plot relevant return. Is Jen desperately in need of money and someone is paying her to get back in good with Noa and feed them info? Am I reaching?

I still really don't know how I feel about Johnny. He had quite a bit of screen time this episode, and he is very charming, but why does he matter? We don't have very many extraneous characters in the show, and while he could just be a love interest (like the role Ash played last season), it certainly wouldn't be a shock if he's got secrets. For some reason, I also wouldn't be super surprised if he got murdered? I don't know why I get that vibe. I think it might be because I still feel that Bloody Rose is punishing "sinners" and Johnny being so upfront about wanting to casually date multiple girls would almost certainly fit that pattern of judgement and warrant "punishment." But also... can't Imogen catch a break?

This is a small thing, but at Mouse's party, Greg clocks Noa & Jen's relationship. While he does so in an obnoxious way, it makes me want to go back and watch his scenes from 2x01 and 2x02 again, just to see if he's made any other obnoxious comments that might actually be insightful. Greg being so annoying could be a really interesting way to deliver serious/important information, without the audience taking it seriously. I'm definitely going to be paying attention to what he says in the future.

Notably absent from the skate party - all the adults, Shawn, Henry, and Ash. While I'm not convinced anyone has a solid alibi (as this whole plot seems too elaborate for one person to pull off), these are characters that we have no visual alibi for while Mouse is being chased by Rose. Though Ash does show up at Mouse's to pick her up shortly after, so he is at least partially covered. He is also perfectly primed to manipulate Mouse's grandmother, though. So maybe those things cancel each other out.

I struggle to believe that Ash is going to turn out to be evil enough to do something like this to Mouse (I mean, obviously I could be wrong. "It's always the boyfriend," is a huge trope for a reason), I don't want to completely rule him out just because I like him, and he's also been kind of "too perfect" in a lot of respects, which puts me a little on guard with him. But I like him and I don't have a solid reason to suspect him at the moment, so I'm going to keep trusting him for now.

My suspicions of Henry & Shawn have both gone up a little bit, particularly Shawn. They seem like the SOs that are "on the outs," so to speak. Either has potential motive (extreme reactions, but potential motive) to seek revenge on their girlfriends- Henry could have already known Faran was lying to him about being cleared to dance (though like holy hell what an overreaction if that has to do with anything), and Shawn could have already known about Noa & Jen's relationship in juvie. Shawn has been "too perfect" in a lot of ways as well, and I also don't really understand how the show will manage to validate Noa & Jen's relationship if Shawn is just 100% an innocent victim in all this. It makes me feel like he may pull a Billy Loomis and we'll discover that he's been plotting revenge on Noa for a long time. If he really has done nothing wrong, then I feel really bad for him.

Kelly seems evidently conflicted in this episode. This definitely tracks with my suspicions of her mother & church, but I do wonder if they're making it too obvious. Kelly was my first thought when Mouse's grandmother told her one of her friends gave her the info on where to take her, and she could feel quite bad about it. She is clearly seeking validation in a lot of ways, and she did seem genuinely touched that Imogen (and the other girls) want to include her in things, so it wouldn't be surprising if she's conflicted. But maybe she's just that good of an actor. I also haven't forgotten that Kelly was very diabolical in the episode that Karen died.

No sign of Wes this episode. Idk that that matters, just making note of it. He could definitely be on the chopping block if Rose is taking out "sinners."

We have now confirmed that all the new love interests are aware of the events of season 1 (to different degrees, but aware). Christian and Johnny were both pretty upfront about their awareness, but I'm not so sure about Jen (who claimed not to know much about it in an earlier episode). I have also noted that both Jen and Christian were possibly seeking out Noa and Tabby (Jen being in summer school, Christian getting a job at the movie theater), while Johnny doesn't appear to have intentionally placed himself in Imogen's path, as she came and applied to the creamery, not the other way around.

I'm pretty sure I have more thoughts about this episode, but there's so much bouncing around in my brain (I just love puzzles), so I'm gonna sleep on it and see where that takes me.

Summary - After Toby is cleared of charges, you grow close, and he admits he’s always had feelings for you but fears you don’t feel the same. He avoids you, leaving you frustrated and confused.

Toby was finally free. After months of being labeled as Rosewood’s scapegoat, the truth had finally come to light. Watching him walk out of the courthouse, head held high and shoulders squared, made your chest swell with relief. He deserved this—freedom, peace, and a chance to just be himself.

From that moment, you couldn’t stop yourself from reaching out to him. It started small, offering a quick word of encouragement when you bumped into him at school or on the street. But it quickly became more—a text to check in, an offer to help him with something, or a quiet moment shared over coffee.

The more time you spent together, the more you realized how much there was to admire about Toby. He was thoughtful, steady, and fiercely loyal in a way that made you feel safe. That safety was a rare feeling in your life, and you found yourself drawn to it, to him.

But it wasn’t just his kindness or his resilience. It was the way he listened, the way he looked at you like you mattered in a world that often made you feel like you didn’t. It scared you how quickly your feelings grew. You’d convinced yourself it was one-sided, that Toby saw you as nothing more than a friend.

Then came that night.

It was late, and you’d both stayed longer than you planned at the park. The conversation had wandered into deeper territory, his voice soft as he shared pieces of himself he rarely let anyone see.

When he walked you home, he lingered at your doorstep, shifting awkwardly. His eyes flicked to yours, his expression conflicted.

“There’s something I need to tell you,” he began, his voice barely above a whisper.

“What is it?” you asked, tilting your head.

He hesitated, looking down at the ground before taking a deep breath. “I’ve had feelings for you for a long time. Longer than I should have.” He met your gaze then, his eyes searching yours. “But I know you might not feel the same. I shouldn’t have said anything. Just… forget I said that.”

He turned quickly, walking away before you could even process his words.

“Toby, wait!” you called after him, but he was already gone.

In the days that followed, Toby vanished. He wasn’t at his usual spots, didn’t answer your texts, and seemed to make a point of avoiding you. It was maddening, especially when his confession kept replaying in your mind.

You finally decided enough was enough. If Toby Cavanaugh thought he could run forever, he had seriously underestimated your determination.

You found him in his garage one evening, working on his truck with his back to the door. The sound of tools clinking and soft music playing did nothing to hide the tension that radiated off him when he realized you were there.

He turned slowly, wiping his hands on a rag. “What are you doing here?”

“You can’t keep running from me,” you said firmly, stepping into the garage.

“I’m not running,” he replied, but his voice wavered.

“Then why have you been avoiding me?”

Toby sighed, setting the rag down and leaning against the side of the truck. His shoulders slumped as he ran a hand through his hair. “Because I can’t stand the thought of you not feeling the same way. I’d rather avoid you than hear you say it.”

Your heart ached at the vulnerability in his voice, and before he could say anything else, you closed the distance between you. Without hesitation, you grabbed his shirt, pulled him toward you, and kissed him.

For a moment, Toby froze, but then his hands came up to your waist, pulling you closer. The kiss was soft at first, like he was afraid to hope, but when you didn’t pull away, it deepened, becoming something more.

When you finally broke apart, your forehead rested against his as you caught your breath.

“You’re an idiot,” you said softly, a smile tugging at your lips. “I’ve been falling for you this whole time.”

His eyes searched yours, filled with disbelief and something that looked a lot like joy. “You mean that?”

You nodded, your fingers still curled in his shirt. “Every word.”

emison, jackieshauna, percabeth

Emison — I kept shifting them around because nothing felt totally right and it’s a ship my mood varies on but they’re definitely more compelling to me than not. If we’re talking about flashbacks Emison I’d put them on the same level as Percabeth just in the don’t make sense side (as in they shouldn’t be together probably most likely) those flashbacks are good and compelling. If we’re talking about 4b-5a I’d put them higher than Percabeth bellow Jackieshauna that was a great era for them… if we’re talking about post jump they tip towards the doesn’t compel me side of the chart I do not like their storylines at that point at all. Book Emison (as in both Emily/evil Alison and Emily/Courtney and how they played off each other) was generally at the placement I actually put them at, more compelling than not but didn’t make me crazy. So if you average out all of that this is where they go on the chart, but at their best they are really compelling to me and they probably are my favorite canon pll ship or at least tie with Emaya for that (I pretty obviously tend to favorite noncanon femslash when it comes to pll). Percabeth — I love them, I don’t have a lot to say about them rn because I’m not in a pjo focused headspace anymore.. But Percabeth was formative and they have a very good arc and are a blueprint in a lot of ways. Jackieshauna — incredible ship with an incredibly potent narrative. Zero hesitation in putting them high up there when it comes to compelling content. In some ways it’s what Emison should have been to me although I also think they share tons of dna with Spalison… I wasn’t totally sure where to put them in terms of making sense because one of them is dead and her being dead is pretty important to the narrative but like. the narrative makes sense. so I put them in the middle there.

Obvious retcons are obvious, in that none of

Paige crushing on Emily in freshman year + getting tormented by Alison for it

Spencer being on amphetamines most of summer + her family thinking she killed Alison while high

Ezra already knowing who Aria was + surveilling the liars to write a book

were planned back when season 1 was being written, or were even potential story ideas. On this rewatch, I didn't mind viewing S1 from the perspective of the retcons.

Let's get Fitz out of the way first because he's boring and he sucks. This is the first time I've watched many of the S1 Ezria scenes because back when I first watched this show I fast-forwarded through all of their scenes. I find him much more tolerable with the idea that he's always been even creepier, having hung out with 14-year-old Alison as a college student, that he's using the Ezria relationship for dirt while also getting his rocks off on it, that his stupid little :o faces are an act, that all of it is defensible because it is For The Book. If only a certain hoodie had aimed their gun better 🙏 Perfect ending then

Paige, truly my poor little meow meow before that was even a phrase. It is delicious to spend time with S1!Paige knowing the full backstory - her dad alone could explain the vibrating-with-turmoil mess we see, but the retcon slots in neatly to what we already know. In S1, Spencer says Paige has fouls named after her in field hockey, and so Paige bruising Alison in soccer is what prompts Alison's ire and revenge. S1!Paige treats Emily's existence like it's the universe playing a joke on her, (incorrectly) attributing an ease to Emily's life, be it swimming, sexuality or parents. What an even bigger joke it must have felt like, that Emily turns out to be gay after all and was in love with Alison. Paige must really really like Emily to only go "She seemed like a very dynamic person." in response to that and not just cycle off.

Though it must be that by this point Paige has realized Emily does not exactly share moral philosophies with Alison. In her introductory episodes, Paige repeatedly assumes of Emily ulterior motives, or behind-the-scenes game-playing, with very little basis. All of the liars get this to some degree, the consequences of their public tight-knit friendship with Ali, but it also fun to consider whether Paige ever thought Emily in on the trick played on her. (Am I making up in my head someone in the show describing the quintet with "those girls tell each other everything"?)

I assume freshman year Paige was looking at Emily like this all the time given how easily Ali figured it out. Going to blame Ali for Paige's tragic style shift from polo shirt + khaki shorts to terrible haircut + terrible cardigans, rip the baby lesbian fit.

Emily is absolutely the first time Paige has ever tried being a verbal bully and not a physical one. She is not very good at it, like clearly Emily is out and nobody cares, this is ineffective leverage. She also does not have that dog in her when it comes to physical bullying either, given her reaction post-head dunk. Some of it is because it was Emily Fields, with all that represents and who remained unfailingly not-terrible to her even after said dunk, but it does seem to apply more generally - I think she can do heat of the moment sports roughness without feeling bad, given Spencer's and Ali's comments, but the targeting of someone did not feel great for her.

S1 parallels Paige and Ali a few times, the first when Spencer tells Emily that she talked to Fulton for her because Emily never stood up to Ali (and no, I don't think Spencer was aware of Ali playing hot-and-cold with Emily re:kisses, just that she had eyes and like everyone else could see that Emily was whipped), the second when Paige and Emily frame Emily's type as "ballsy women", the third when Emily puts away her Alison bracelet after the picnic where she tells Paige she can't secretly date, the fourth when Paige texts Emily post-Samara and A immediately follows up with the "love me, lie for me" text. I don't think Ali is ever as directly brought up in the context of Emily/Maya, though I could be mistaken. They feel more separated.

My only notes on this are (1) one of the fun things about Paily for me is the way they take turns being the brave one and admire the other one for it (2) I wonder if Paige has already been comparing herself to Alison by the time we see her in S1...maybe she has, given something she says in S5

Spencer's family really is terrible to her about letting Ian continue to live on their property even after she's expressed terror at it and they know he was kissing her while she was 14 and he was her coach, but it is so so funny that every time she accuses Ian of murdering Ali her family must be thinking....fucking hell, you did it and we need you to not drag police attention onto our family! What the fuck Spence!

Especially funny from Melissa's PoV, who IIRC buried a girl and thought she was covering for Spencer, and now has Spencer repeatedly accusing her husband in public. From her perspective she is the most long-suffering oldest sister who has ever lived, okay.

Again, all of the Hastings deserve this problem because of how they are fine with even a non-murdering Ian and apparently got Spencer zero help after that cursed summer murder. Still very funny.

When Spencer asks Ian "Was that how it happened?" when he recites how her fake suicide letter will say she murdered Alison, I wonder if it's a genuine question her part :( Her memory of that night is very fucked up, she might in this moment wonder if he saw something and go wait no, Ali died of suffocation.

Spencer...also had multiple confrontations with Ali? From this season we know she had one inside her house (before or during?) the sleepover, and then in S4 we learned Spencer's A adderall pills overpowered Ali's sleeping pills and Spencer chased after her in the backyard. Were there more confrontations she had that day? I genuinely forget, and will now simply picture Spencer running back and forth and back and forth and back and forth across her own backyard.

Pack Alpha Nico, obviously she and Lewis have a complicated relationship. For the pack they are on alright terms but never as good as they used to be but they can stand being in the presence of one another as long as nobody brings things up about their relationship. Yes they sleep together and everything but still it’s never going to be the same as it once was.

2021. Max and Lewis are going to the championship and it’s closer then it has been in years. Max getting hurt in a crash and starts shutting Lewis out once again like in 2016. This obviously hurts Lewis because he has to stay away from the pack but he understands because Max is his baby and him and Max can’t be in the same place without some kind of argument occurring. Even when Lewis got hurt Nico didn’t come to the hospital too busy taking care of Max who was upset about dropping points and potentially hurting Lewis. Lewis is upset but older so plays it off.

The season finale Max wins and Nico and the rest of the pack are obviously congratulating him and Lewis did too but as Nico is doing it Lewis is just stood in the corner watching before going to his own room. A week or so passes and the pack is still together congratulating Max and giving him his reward and Lewis is alone. He thought maybe Nico and the rest of the pack (mainly Nico) would commiserate him for his loss like Nico ALWAYS does to second place but nothing happens. (Also Nico never congratulating Lewis like she did Max for obvious reasons but nonetheless hurts Lewis).

Nico notices that Lewis hasn’t properly congratulated Max and has a go at Lewis for being such a sore loser. As Nico is screaming she can see the shift in Lewis’ face and knows that she should stop but doesn’t. In the end Lewis bites back by saying ‘not once have you checked on me. Commiserated me for losing out like you do with everyone else. Not once have you asked how I’m feeling about losing out on the championship the way I did. Don’t get me wrong I am happy for Max but for fucks sake Nico I’m hurting. I know you don’t like me as much as the others but you’re still my pack alpha and I’m still hurting yet once again I’ve been tossed to the side’

Only then Nico realises how much they’ve been neglecting Lewis because of the stupid pride she has.

Lewis and Nico will get along for the pack but things are tense and awkward st times. They don't trust each other as much as they used to. They still fuck occassionally cos Lewis is just as much pack as the others are to Nico, but it's a bit painful cos they both remember how things used to be...

The fight being so tense and Nico picks sides which she has never done before. Lewis feels so deserted and alone and yes, he has made mistakes or wrong calls, hut max has too! And Max gets dotted on whilr Lewis gets ignored and it hurts...

Max tries to approach Lewis sometimes but it's awkward and tense and just too soon. They need Nico to help, for her to mediate but she is too deep into it herself. She has complicated feelings about Max and her history with Lewis is complicated too ....

Max winning the championship and Lewis further distances himself to let them party. He waits for Nico to come yo him, to soothe him and give him some of her time and comfort as she always does with the 2nd place finishers but Lewis doesn't get it, Nico is too busy gushing over Max!

Nico herself struggling a lot because she doesn't know how to comfort lesis after all this, feels really shitty about everything but instead of facing it, she pulls away more. She hoped the off season would bring her pack back together but Lewis is barely there and wohg speak much and doesn't congratulate Max.

Nico is frustrated and on edge, probably partially because she feels her pack's feelings so strongly and it's chaos! She yells at Lewis even though she knows it's wrong...

Lewis snarling back and telling Nico maybe she should have tried to talk to him, to comfort him, but all she does is fuss over Max like he is made of pure gold!

Nico feeling like such a failure... pls she doesn't feel right taking care of her pack after and maybr even thinks its finally time for her to give up and find the pack a new pack Alpha...

Pls it's so tense and the pack is threatening to fall apart! Maybe that's when Mark comes back? (We said Nico would be all soft and purry around him cos he was her pack alpha and mentor) and he kindly tells them all they are dickheads and gets them to get their shit together!
