I think Spencer and Hanna are both pretty afraid of losing the Liars (though you're right that we hadn't seen Spencer vocalize it at this point), whereas I don't think Emily and Aria have thought about it literally at all. They've also experienced the most abandonment in their home lives for sure

I wish they'd contrasted Hanna and Aria's situations a bit more. We got it a little at the beginning then it drops off. Aria refusing to have dinner with her mom during the separation always jumps out at me as insanely privileged (I was young enough that I got no say in these things) and I imagine would've bothered Hanna as well for different reasons

​oh that's a good point, I think Aria only escapes Hanna's judgement here because of how much she keeps to herself. Wonder if Hanna sees Ashley/Tom hooking up and thinks about how she and Aria spied on Byron/Ella hooking up post-separation and then Ella moved back in.

By the end of the show (or at least when I stopped watching) Spencer is the most scared of losing the Liars, which tracks given that her family is Like That, and yeah that's something she and Hanna share. Which is interesting, given that the pilot positions the two of them as top dogs in Rosewood, while Emily and Aria feel somewhat alienated from the town.

it's rarely discussed because of sibling parings but on pretty Little Liars i felt some good mother/daughter possibiltys. Aria with mother ella. Spencer or melissa with mother Veronica. Spencer's twin Alex with their bio mother Mary

2.) Are there any problematic tropes that squick you out?

Adult/minor. In general, I don't like it. Very rarely I'll have one ship that fits in this category, but out of the top of my head, I can't think of any. But I love big age gaps, like a 18-years-old with an 28-years-old, etc. Just must be a legal adult.

4.) First ever problematic ship? (you didn't have to know it was problematic then)

In general problematic, I used to ship Aria and Ezra in PLL and never saw anything wrong until I grew older (I actually stopped shipping them when it was revealed that Ezra had only gotten with her to write a book about Allison, but I still didn't realise there was a issue of him being an adult AND her teacher).

Of incest shipping, I ship Arthur/Morgana in Merlin (I prefer Arthur/Merlin, but I'm a multishipper lol). I did before the reveal they were siblings and I continued after. Since Merlin was my first real exposure to the Arthurian myths, I had no idea that in (some versions of the) myth they were siblings and still got together. Also, when I was 12 and reading The Mortal Instruments, I continued to ship Clary and Jace even after the sibling reveal, and I saw no problem with it, since they weren't raised together.

9.) Problematic crackship?

Not exactly crackship, but I don't actually ship Sam/Dean in the canon. I ship them in the fics that people write and in my own AUs, but not in the show itself, if it makes sense.

this is a fic I wrote two years ago when I first got into pll but I don’t think I posted it here then just on ao3, and I remember when I wrote it I was uncertain about it but I’d say retroactively I’m happy with how this turned out in a way I rarely feel about fics! So I thought I would link it here, primarily an Alison character study with a side of Aria/Alison. Takes place pre series and there’s cross-over with events of “The First Secret”.

Tyler and Kim (the hybrid girl from his pack). Kim was really short-lived character, but I think she and Tyler would've been perfect longterm!

Tyler and Rebekah. A temporary fling between the two of them would've been fun for the drama.

Elena and Liam. It was nice to actually see her have interest in anyone other than the Salvatores. I don't he was as bad as the majority of the fandom makes him out to be. I said it once a while ago that Elena's storyline was wrapped after they made her chose a brother and stopped being a doppelganger but that's another post (daily fuck you to julie plague) Elena has really interesting ships. I do like Elena and Lucien too though! That i'm learning about.

Peyton and Jake - Not as rare as the others but very small compared to most OTH ships. Owen and Brooke is one of my favorites too

Last one Samara and Emily from PLL.

Tbh, I don't think I've been super surprised by ships. I think I'm more surprised when people aren't accepting to headcanons or fanon. Living under the idea that canon is the only way media can be presented. If I am super unaware of a ship, I like to read metas so I can learn what someone else could've seen that I missed. I think that's one of the fun parts in fandom. Learning ideas from another. I hope answered this right!

i have been so absent for the best month of the year because of life things but i should mention that melissa hastings is a funky horse girl london loving lesbian

on some level was always aware of this but also would immediately push it down any time she thought about it because Absolutely Not Allowed. in the hastings family sure other people are gay and it's okay i guess but not MY daughters. and melissa very much internalized that

big association with Doing The Right Things and love. when melissa soars and accomplishes, melissa is Good and Loved. everything is Right and anyone who complicates that narrative.. Bad. melissa spent a lot of time struggling with how she DOES feel this very genuine love and affection for spencer and how it's almost. Too Real. there's too much feeling in it. it's real and gritty and she would kill for it, she DID kill for it, and that's not the narrative. she doesn't want the emotion and the messiness.

she wants the simplicity of how her parents treat her after ian dies. how it's so very simple that poor melissa has lost everything and we have to wrap around her now and frankly? that doting and affection? so nice! hastings are viciousness and clawing your way to success and achievement but melissa didn't have to do anything to earn this. she didn't have to get the top score or the best job she won their love simply because of the guilt of having accepted ian so warmly and encouraged the relationship so completely and having allowed their daughter to be disgraced in this way.

she could just exist and have compassion and that felt like a rare feeling. there's something very simple about ian and how he ~takes care of her and that's addictive to melissa. she really does love him because of the certainty there and how that made her feel safe. feeling safe is so rare, and she did feel that with ian. ian would never make her feel something she didn't want to feel, ian would never push or challenge her and would say all the right things. she did feel like spencer was trying to take it away, this special little life she'd carved out for herself where she could live in a dream land and had earned their parents' approval and she wouldn't really have to feel anything messy or complicated at all.

she resents spencer for making it hard and complicated and pushing her to feel things she didn't want to feel, especially after bethany. spencer gets the realest parts of melissa, good and ugly. no one makes melissa feel more than spencer does and she struggles with that. struggles with how she does feel this empathy for her for having grown up in their war zone of a house and does feel this protectiveness of her and how neither of those feelings bode well for melissa, who just wants to coast through life and make their parents proud and keep from feeling anything too harshly and have an easy simple life.

melissa is ugly to people who make her feel.

in my tasha pll verse she and tasha bond as teenagers who are in very similar strict rigid families with a plethora of expectations none too easy to match and they develop feelings and attraction toward each other and as soon as melissa realizes she Cuts Her Off and years and years later is still talking shit because she can't Handle it. literally cannot forgive or deal with this person who made her feel something she isn't allowed to feel, and is so resentful of tasha for getting out of her awful family and finding a way to live her truth and be proud of who she is and not carry this shame melissa feels for loving women. it feels like a betrayal, almost, that tasha could do this and she couldn't.

being away in london helps melissa immensely. being away from rosewood and her parents and finally given the space to explore who she is outside of the Perfect Melissa Persona crafted by her family helps her start to allow these parts of her she'd buried and pushed down come to fruition. i don't know if she'd ever Come Out unless she met someone she allowed herself to care for enough to embody that part of herself in any real tangible way, but she allows herself to think about women and maybe even date women.

the time away helps her see her relationship with spencer more quickly and realize how much she does truly want to remedy things and have spencer in her life, wants spencer to have the freedom she has in london too. having spencer away from rosewood is safe in a way it isn't IN rosewood, with her parents around with all of their secrets with A with all of it. she can be more vulnerable with her with that distance.

spencer is probably the first and maybe the only person she could talk to about loving women, though maybe only because @lingeringscars' spencer is bi and it's something they share

also everything she says ever sounds shady and creepy and threatening even though it usually Isn't and i don't know if that will ever change i've tried to talk to her about it but she's just Like That

i don't think she really wants to be Happy so much as she wants to not ever feel anything very hard and have a life that looks nice from the outside and her parents can approve of and feel safe. but we're working on it we're trying

and like it is absolutely ridiculous, the lengths she will go to to have this, very much at the expense of anything Real, but it is also completely a survival mechanism and that should be said. it is very much melissa's way of trying to survive in the hastings family and it can be very ugly but it's all she knows

pll rewatch 2x05

2x05 gives us Emily leading an investigation while Spencer would Like To Rest (“can we please slay one dragon at a time” is an actual line she says) 

Very fair of Spencer to have been more scared of Ian than A. She still suggests that her parents give Ian a funeral. She can’t help these bursts of sentiment, as vulnerable as they make her

Oh, this is the episode in which Spencer accidentally yells at her maternal grandmother on the phone! I hope at least her nana is nice to her :/ Also still waiting for Spencer to get a threat-free sleepover :/ 

“Pookie Bear” and “Z”. I would ask which nickname is worse except Aria’s is a cute kiddo family thing and I bet Ezra felt soooooo cooooooool being called Z in college. I would forgive this in another character but not in him. 

Ashley’s spiel that the year after Ali’s disappearance she was terrified every time Hanna went out the door - it recontextualizes her panic the night Hanna went camping with Caleb, yes, but I wonder if she’s the only parent this was true of. It would be easy for all the other parents to think of their girls as immune to whatever happened to Alison but Ashley seems the least likely to fall prey to the just-world fallacy. 

Pam is out of town, likely visiting Wayne. I idly wonder how their marriage is doing with the distance. I mean, look, this is the only parental marriage I’m going to care about, y’all understand that right?

Ashley and Hanna discuss Ashley leaving home when she was 17 and not going to her dad’s funeral but paying for it. Ashley is also the parent most likely to be honest about her upbringing to her kid, with Hanna clearly comfortable asking her questions about it, and I think it gives her a better understanding of both her mom and Caleb.

...I don’t think Wilden was the first time Ashley engaged in quasi-transactional sex

Emily scrapbooked her way through an investigation. Emily is absolutely the kind of kid who grows up to be quite similar to her mom (and be annoyed by anyone pointing it out) and I would find the idea of Emily as a mom endearing if it was not for uh....canon....

Best A message of the episode: Hey, Em. Is it just me? Or does that suicide note look familiar?

A is like, Emily is not the solo deranged investigator type that Spencer is, I need to give her helpful prompts

Emily and Pam watch Wheel of Fortune together. I bet the Hastings watch Jeopardy (the rare times they are in town) and are very competitive with each other, the Marins watch the trashiest dating shows and the Montgomerys Do Not Believe in Reality TV (Mike watches Jackass)

Emily wants justice for Alison. Spencer wants safety for the living. Her living, which boils down to: the Liars, her family, Toby

Logan Reed yells “I don’t know how to describe voices!” Same, bro, same. 

Veronica apologizing to Spencer....I forgot this scene entirely. Veronica says “You work so hard. You always have.” and apologizes for letting a monster into their home and you can see something light up in Spencer and it is so sad even if I cannot remember how/if/when/where Veronica betrays her promise here in the future

Caleb once went without a meal for four days and has seen a dead body before :( He says it’s a short trip from Eat, Pray, Love to Drink, Snap, Slap :( 

I’m glad Hanna’s absurd “Erin Brockobitch” ploy worked to get him cash, even if I don’t understand why the Marins buy ice instead of using their freezer to make it.

Do like that the way they get back together is Hanna seeing him have a bad time and basically going ok I’ve got to do something about this. Hanna ends up going to a graveyard after this so maybe Caleb did not ditch his Goonies date with Lucas.

Other Caleb facts: clearly does not like Goonies, does like kung fu flicks

The note Jason found in his pocket has the same odd capitalization of “T” that Ian’s fake suicide note does, huh

Garrett pays off Logan Reed and reports back to Jenna. I ponder the times that PLL departs from our protagonists’ perspectives/immediate contexts and to what degree the show succeeds in playing with that.

Ella is spooked by Ian having been a regular adult at her kids’ school, someone she said hi to on the hallway and someone she trusted as a fellow authority over kids. ....are they trying to make Ezra seem terrible here or what???

Spemily are united in the graveyard hunt bc Spencer is back in bulldog mode after getting yelled at by her sister, and it’s a good look for them, while Team Haria is like :/ the ground is squishy whyyyy :/

I could talk Yellowjackets FOREVER (but if it's too much you can ask me to stop and I will) There are so many theories (like who is Pit Girl? What is the fate of Shauna's baby? What happened to Javi? Who is the Antler Queen? So many questions and theories) And yes I too suffered through PLL so I know your pain. Also I hope that it stays in the "human" world and it doesn't go "supernatural" (the seance scene for example the character is a schizophrenic or so I read and that could explain a lot)

One thing I'll disagree on is Lottie, I think she's psychic or at least has some sort of premonition and that's been demonized by her father. In many cultures, there are people like her that aren't considered supernatural. I mentioned this in a server I'm in but it's really possible that Lottie's (white, rich) father simply wouldn't believe in anything he couldn't personally explain, where her mother was saying that Lottie could be having psychic visions. Obviously her father is rich and powerful so anything he wants she gets, which very well could include a high dosage anti-psychotic for a daughter who doesn't meet the criteria for schizophrenia. According to my (admittedly bare) research, most women are diagnosed as adults in their later twenties, cases are very rare for 12-18, and in general it's incredibly rare for kids under 12 to be diagnosed - and Lottie looked like 9 or 10 in the car scene imo.

I think, by now, I'm sold on Lottie being the antler queen, I don't think it'll be a rotating title like -A was.

I really fell for the Adam is Javi hints hook line and sinker. Once I read that the writers weren't sure if Adam was gonna be Javi I felt better about seeing it, but whew I was kinda like... WOW he's just some guy, isn't he? But I can't wait for his torso to be discovered and then confirmed to be Adam's torso because of the tattoo. That'll be fun, and I can see it happening specifically because Misty said the torso is not identifiable but he has a back tattoo.

As for Pit Girl, I truly don't have any solid theories! My only vague thought is it could be Mari, but honestly that's just because she's the only one we've seen with straight, dark hair that hasn't been confirmed alive. There are people who think it's Callie and it was a modern day hunt, which is wild to me just because like... c'mon Callie deserves life, or they think it's Shauna's baby grown up.

Speaking of Shauna's baby, she's going to have the baby, but... yeah. I don't know what's going to happen, but I do think the cult is gonna love that baby. The way I've described Lottie's power ascent was Laura Lee dying was the catalyst and Doomcoming was her coronation; her visions were confirmed before but not everyone knew about them (the red water, the sick deer, Laura Lee's death), but at Doomcoming she said "we will eat soon" and then the bear came the next morning, and someone even pointed that out. Van also said she's predicted multiple things at school, like prom queen. So then will the baby become a fixation as the rebirth of Jackie and Laura Lee? I don't know much about Jesus, tbh, but I know rebirth is a thing Christians talk about. The second-coming. Will the baby be considered the second-coming? Will Shauna only be protected because of her pregnancy, and will her giving birth put her in danger with the cult? I have more questions than answers, truly, because there are no hints (that I've uncovered!) about the baby's fate.

Unfortunately I think Javi dies. I think one of the reasons Travis was so anti-cult is because they want to eat Javi's corpse and he won't let them, maybe? Or maybe the cult hunts Javi and killing Travis completes their ritual! Most of my theories are basically out of thin air when it comes to Javi, but there is one thing I think I know for sure: if Javi were alive, he'd have been Adam. (I don't know that for sure.) His death, if it occurs this season, will definitely be a huge thing that divides Travis and Natalie further apart from the cult.
