I feel fandom would get along a lot better if there was mutual understanding that liking a character, agreeing with a character, and thinking the character is well constructed/executed are all separate (if often overlapping) positions, each with their separate tastes and subjectivities. Also: character portrayals are intended to make the audience feel things; this is separate from (if often overlapping with) analyzing/appreciating their actions and role in the story.

I’ve rewritten this many times but I think simple is best: I enjoyed the cr3 finale and I think the cast deserve to have that happy ending, narrative or whatever be damned. Some of them irl had to evacuate due to the fires and while I understand the people upset by the lack of narrative weight (which is a term I’ve seen being thrown around) I just never saw a universe where Matt (who notoriously loves his friends) would’ve ever done something different than allow his friends to have their characters have their happy (or desired) endings. I don’t want to diminish anyone’s feelings, and I think a lot of the constructive criticism is actually very healthy to express. But god, truth be told, there’s been a lot of rancid negativity in the fandom as of late and with this finale people are lashing out and while that’s a testament to just how much people cared about Bells Hells and their story I honestly think some people just need to sit down and reflect before they type. I know there’s quite a few people who hate to hear it as an excuse but guys, it’s their game. And I think with all of the awful things happening in LA with the fires I think they deserve that happy ending. Don’t forget to be kind.

my professor has an extremely strict policy when it comes to attendance (we are in college which immediately makes that statement bullshit) and i'm sick rn so obviously i don't want to go because i'm in pain and because i run the risk of infecting my classmates but there are no exceptions for makeup work and i've got 2 quizzes to take today and if i miss them my entire grade will go down the drain except i don't really understand the concepts anyways so i'll probably fail the class no matter what but anyways i asked her hey can i just pop in to take the quizzes, then go home and miss the lecture? i will research and learn all of the material that you cover in the three hours of lecture time i'll miss tonight. and she's not answering. and class is in 4 hours.

honestly it's just frustrating. you have people finding misogynistic cishet dudes and defending their emotional neglect of their sexual partners because it superficially resembles aromanticism even when the men themselves do not identify as aromantic and are often neglecting their sexual partners specifically because they view a girlfriend as the only type of woman who deserves any type of effort and so if the chick they're fucking isn't their girlfriend they can treat her like dirt. and then when people are rightly like "hey fuck you for defending a misogynist" the same people who claimed the cishet guy who never at any point claimed to be aromantic was aromantic and therefore criticizing his misogyny is arophobia go into the aro tags to despair at how many people HATE aromantics so they can whip a bunch of bystanders into a frenzy because they've heard that people are discrediting aromanticism, and therefore are encouraged to read the original unrelated posts or people getting pissed at someone defending emotional abuse by calling it aromanticism in bad faith or not at all, and so you get a mountain of people theorizing that the attack on cishet aro men was manufactured by TERFs instead of people who think that girls who date guys deserve dudes who don't see them as a freelance contractor they can expect sex from without having to treat them with the bare minimum respect they feel a girlfriend is owed.

Mental health family stuff etc.

There's something really mentally wrong with my Grandpa and nobody seems to give a damn they just think he's an asshole and so he's just going down that hill he's also stubborn as hell so that's part of it to I think he needs a psych eval I think has an untreated mental illness and he needs like mood stabilizers maybe and I think it might be too late um and the reason I think this is because one time when I was in college he was helping me try to fix the turn signal on my car and his hands were shaky so he was telling me how to do it we were using a ratchet and he told me like see you don't need a man to do this for you women can do anything men can do. And every now and then he says something like that and it's like wow you have a really compassionate heart. One time on Facebook he posted something about God or prayer and someone replied something like I didn't know you believed in that stuff and my grandpa said something like "if your wife had breast cancer you would pray too". Idk I believe he's a really good person but when he gets around people other than me he acts completely different at times it just makes me think something is wrong to make him act badly but maybe that's the optimist who believes in everyone until the bitter end in me.

my great hope is that everyone who has not yet watched lotr now observing my unhinged posts will be compelled to watch lotr. i feel this way not only because i think its a beautiful story but also and more pragmatically because i genuinely think that for whatever flaws it may have its a very special phenomenon in filmmaking history.

many tolkien characters are weirdos in out-of-story-context. and then several tolkien characters are weirdos in in-story-context, too, which makes them great fun. in fact, it could be argued that there's so much cross-cultural race and power-level mixing in the proverbial dnd party (and all subsequent side quests), that every single character is at one point perceived as a massive weirdo by any other given character in the story.

The one thing I will say: in addition to being reminded how much callousness and cruelty there is in this world, I have been reminded how much love there is too.

To all the people who have asked each other if they're okay. To everyone telling each other to stay alive. To everyone offering whatever aid and compassion and sympathy they can. To everyone getting angry at the people responsible simply because they cannot stand the thought of harm coming to other people. It may not seem like much, but it is so, SO valuable. I see you, I appreciate you, I love you, and you are the reason I am not giving up.
