Few years back I read some fanfic from a friend that I really liked. I’ve tried navigating the ao3 website but find it so overwhelming please I need some suggestions. Give me a few of your favorite fanfics, it would be really generous if you do so<3
So I dont really know what fandoms you like/interact with, but a general rule of thumb is the filters are your best friends. I, for one, really enjoy the time travel trope so I just put that in the additional tags filter, pick the fandom I wanna search and possibly the characters that I want to appear. Usually I also disable crossovers because then you get a couple of fic 45387 chapters long with every fandom and tag imaginable in them.
But if you want specifically recs, here they go:
HP: Basiliskborn (gen, time travel, one of my faves - the first couple of chapters do have some spelling mistakes tho); What comes around (also gen, also time travel, not finished yet but super interesting, the first chapters are a bit over the top but that calms down and the story turns very much into a political fantasy fanfiction); James Potter, Remus Lupin, Sirius Black, Peter Pettigrew, (pause for breath) and the Prisoner of Azkaban (time travel but the marauders to the golden trio time, peter is a clinical psychopath and i love it, abit crack-y); Harry Potter and the Problem of Potions(not ooc but kind snape, very funny, just a retelling if harry really liked chemistry); Terrible, But Great (Tom/Harry, timetravel ofc, the first couple of chapter before the story starts are a bit cringy but god it’s so worth it; it is not finished but it does get updated regularly)
SU: For a diamond is a marveled thing (this is one of those crossover series BUT it’s done expertly imo, kinda body horror ish at moments (no gore just like uncanny valley stuff), even if you dont like steven universe it is very specific and i defo recommend); Aid to Navigation (body horror AGAIN - white taking him apart has additional consequences);
MCU: Z to A (gen, again timetravel - you can sense a theme here, Peter and Wanda travel back to Germany, is finished and not as over the top as these get); Been there, Blown That Up (same premise but Nebula and Tony as the MCs, more fun); The Lost and Forgotten(very angsty, gen, Peter gets forgotten by everyone); Everyday Superhero  (a very good but hard read - a realistic perspective on school shootings, written by a teacher, made me cry multiple times, cannot recommend enough)
Artemis Fowl: slowly, slowly (literaly the best romance fic I’ve ever read but that might also be because I Am Him He Is Me (I’m projecting), very much realistic to their characters - also the pairing is him and Holly, ofc); Fairy Bound (accidental marriage. Need I say more.)

She specifically talked about the marauders side of the fandom and I genuinely don't get it at all when that's the most qeer side of the fandom, the side that has always been very detached from JK Rowling, who has always made their characters queer and non-white, the side that, for the majority, doesn't even interact with the real and canon content of the books and thus has never even really supported JK Rowling. The Marauders side of the fandom took the characters and the world and distanced itself from canon and yet that's the side that you decide to criticise instead of all the other sides?
I used to be in the wolfstar side of the fandom years ago but I haven't been in any wolfstar spaces in ages so I don't know if things have changed, but when I was in it, a huge part of it was made up of queer people who, even before JK came out as a transphobe, used to not support or like her because of various other reasons.
James was often described as being indian, Sirius was always bi/gay and very often trans ftm or genderfluid, often korean or japanese and almost always a victim of domestic abuse, Remus was always gay/bi and very often disabled or chronically ill, Dorcas and Marlene were in a sapphic relationship etc.
The wolfstar side was always a place where marginalised minorities found community and told their stories so I genuinely don't understand why this person decided to attack SPECIFICALLY that side of the fandom instead of the side that still supports JK Rowling and always has or the side that kept binding and selling fanfiction etc.
marauders fandom is basically just fandom for a specific set of fanfics at this point bc there’s no content in the og source material 😭
Again, I don't think these people know what's the purpose of fandom is and why people join it.
a
Fandom is a place where people join together to feel community and create something together, it does not matter at all whether what is being created has a basis in canon or not. Especially given how horrible JK is as a human being in addition to the fact that the side of the fandom is very queer, the fact that they couldn't care less about what JK Rowling said and what is in canon and never interact with it is actually a good thing and much better than those people who do interact with canon and monetarily support her and thus the fight against trans people.
It’s so fascinating like … make an oc or SOMETHING WE GOTTA MOVEEE
Again, why?
The tiktok and the comment isn't about not interacting with anything that has to do with JK but specifically about finding the Marauders side of the fandom cringe because there is no basis for them in canon. Why should others make an OC when they already have characters and stories they like and that they want to expand upon? Why do people nowadays think that fandom, shipping and fanfiction is about canon and canon only and even complain when people ship things that aren't canon because "they never even interacted"?
I would understand if the tiktok was more on the lines of "JK is a terrible human being please stop interacting with the world and the characters she created". But the tiktok and the comments OP liked aren't about whether they think it's fine or not to create and interact with fan content about something created by that woman, but it's about the fact that being in the marausers side of the fandom is cringe BECAUSE it has almost no presence in canon. Which, again, stupidest thing one could say about fandom.
I feel like the Marauders took on it's own life and that's why people like.... jumped for it so hard.
Like,,, yeah? And I fail to see what's the issue with that. Again, if they were having a serious and nuanced discussion on consuming harry potter fan content, that would be one thing, but instead they are talking about how stupid and cringe it is that people took side characters from a piece of media and created something from it, which is such a wild thing to havr a conversation about when that's a huge part of what being in a fandom and creating fan content is. There are various categories fanfictios fall into and one of these is "this thing in canon had so much potential and is super interesting but the author didn't do anything with it so I will" and "I love this character so much but they only appear for 10 pages so now I will write about them because author didn't".
like i dont claim to understand why people attach to certain things but. move on!
Again, a severe misunderstanding of what being in a fandom is about. Why should people move on from something they love, enjoy and have fun doing? You don't have to like something for 1 year and then move on to something new and then something newer and so on and so forth. You can keep enjoying and creat art for something for decades (eg: spirk or somethings newer like merthur). With JK Rowling is a bit harder and people have varied opinions on it, which is fine and it's something that I totally think can be discussed and people can share their opinion on, but that's not what was originally being discussed. OP and the comments specifically talked about how the Marauders fandom is cringe BECAUSE it's not canon and people are being delusional about it.
people on tiktok talking about how "insane" or "delusional" x part of x fandom is because the ship/characters they like has almost no presence in canon and it makes no sense for them to be so invested in them, especially when there are so many more options and that it's "cringe" and you should "move on".
And I feel like, if this is your view on fandoms and ships, then you truly must have a very skewed and wrong view of what being in a fandom is and why people are in them. Shipping non-canon couples and obsessing over characters that get almost no screen time is a pretty huge part of what fandom does: they take something that they love but that gets so little and they give them so much more life and depth.

new quarantine project
(TLDR available at the bottom of this post)
look we got really fuckin screwed with the cursed child thing and then fantastic beasts imo, like I do like the fantastic beasts series but we have been waiting for more marauders content for decades now. so I’ve decided that fuck it, there’s no reason we can’t create it ourselves. we’ve been doing a hell of a job so far on fanfics and headcanons and fanart and every other form of media; why not the full seven book series we deserve?
at this point, it might be a fair judgement that the fandom has done more to build upon the world of the marauders and their relationships than the original series laid the grounds for. more canon content has been produced by rowling since then, but I believe a lot of our imaginings have been shaped by the many ideas that we as a community have come up with. that’s why I’d like to involve the entire hp community in creating this series (essentially crowdsourcing creativity/ideas). seven books for the marauders prequel story is a lot of ground to cover, and while I have a few ideas, I want the final product to truly reflect all the love and originality we’ve been pouring into this series for years.
I won’t disregard canon entirely, as I’ll be drawing on the characters from the marauders era as well as additional details rowling has provided. however, one definite way this series will break some established rules is in its diversity. we deserved to see more characters of color, more lgbtq+ relationships and characters, more fat characters, more disabled characters- we deserved to see everyone represented. this time around, I will do my best to ensure we will.
for one thing, wolfstar (the romantic pairing of remus and sirius) will be prevalent. so much of the fan content created for the marauders era includes this pairing, and while not everyone will agree with its inclusion, I do think there are many members of the community who will appreciate it. I would love any other suggestions for more pairings, whether they be platonic or romantic, lgbtq+ or straight.
really, any and all suggestions are so welcome. right now, my plan is to scroll as far down the hp headcanons and hp meta tags as possible to gather inspiration, as well as dive into the canon material rowling has published and make a list of characters before piecing together a general storyline and establishing character arcs. I’ll post an outline when I think I’ve gathered enough sources and inspiration, but please: at any time, even months down the road from this post, do not be afraid to send in ideas/headcanons. the world of harry potter leaves so much room to be expanded on and explored, there’s always room for more.
it’s also my intention to make at least one (if not more) of the main four characters trans (that being remus, sirius, peter, and james). they all hold great potential as trans characters (trans wolfstar? two teenagers navigating their way through life, romance, and gender, supporting each other through everything? discovering themselves and accepting each other? trying to find fashion that appeals to their taste in the seventies?? things to consider...)
obviously this will take an effect on the story as a whole, and nothing is set in stone quite yet. I do love the idea of gender non-conforming sirius, so whether or not that ends up translating to a nonbinary, agender, or even genderfluid sirius is also up in the air. he’s always hated convention and tradition, and I see no reason for him to not live as authentically as possible once he’s given up on his family. there’s a huge opportunity in his narrative for themes of freedom and self-love, especially as he’s canonically coming from an already unsupportive family.
ideas like these and more will, ultimately, be decided on through community polls and voting. whatever we create, it will be created together. I feel that there’s room here for everyone’s ideas and voices to be heard and respected, so (for example) even if we don’t see trans wolfstar, that doesn’t mean we won’t see two trans partners somewhere else in the story.
the headcanon of desi harry is also popular enough for me to comfortably suggest that james be indian, or at least of some south asian descent. a poll to decide on his ethnicity is currently up, as his heritage and culture will be a large part of his backstory and perspective.
with the overview of my general starting ideas out of the way, please send in any opinions or ideas you have for the series and share this post with anyone you think might want to be involved in the project or who might have ideas of their own. reblogs will help spread the word about this project and get as many creative minds involved as possible! sending me posts, art, or links to fanfic and other materials are also welcome, as well as private messages. I’m also open to including storylines from existing fanfictions, as long as the author is open to including their work and ideas. the series will not be sold or commercialized in any way, but will be free for all to read with the release of each new segment of the story.
thank you so much for reading, polls are now available!
some disclaimers: this is not for profit, nor is it intended to infringe upon the work of j.k. rowling. I won’t be claiming to own these characters, settings, or any ideas or concepts in the harry potter universe. the works created are protected under fair use.
TLDR: this is an idea for a new series of marauders books, following james potter, remus lupin, sirius black, and peter pettigrew. this idea is best supported by sending in suggestions, headcanons, and other ideas, as well as taking the polls and sharing this post. involving other writers and creatives is a large goal for this project!
