#please don't get mad at me for not including all the gay scenes

i really like this addition, and i've always seen the love live franchise through this lens. like, even if i hadn't known for years that the love live creator also made strawberry panic, it's extremely clear that there were queer people somewhere in the team behind the animes, especially if you see how far they’ve gone from µ's to aqours to nijigasaki (liella are gay too, but nijigasaki s1 flew too close to the lesbian sun and they really had to tone it down from there).

i wrote a college assignment about this topic, about the state of lesbianism in anime spaces, and love live was a very important reference for my points. it's the perfect mix of female highschoolers that appeal to straight men with money, and homoerotic subtext that appeals to young lesbians. highly problematic in terms of fetichization, but also highly representative of most of the teenage lesbian experiences i've known about. 

we have to keep in mind that love live and love live sunshine aired between 2013 and 2017. there’s a whole generation of sapphic girls who literally didn’t have anything better if they only were into anime. even in the west, the biggest thing we had was steven universe and it was still airing with the worst possible schedule. sure, there were a lot of yuri mangas (and i’m really grateful for all the hard work the authors put into them!!), but in my experience, romance-driven stories weren’t as relatable as this:

and i’m not the only one who felt like this. there’s something very impactful about watching an anime completely unrelated to romance and finding out that one of the main characters has been crushing on her best friend for her whole life and is struggling to confess her feelings (gif 1). that a girl is ashamed of others finding out about her yuri collection (gif 2). that one character literally says she loves all the flaws of another character to cheer her up (gif 3). that the protagonist of one story is in love with her childhood friend and gets jealous and insecure because she thinks said friend will abandon her for another girl (gif 4). they're just normal, human people who happen to be lesbians in a story that isn't about being a lesbian.

(i’m describing the context of these scenes with no exaggeration, and the translation is quite literal - it really is that gay, to the point where it’s offensive to think that only straight people have worked on these stories. there’s also the fact that Garasu no Hanazono exists. like. it’s an explicitly lesbian song written and produced by two women. and the fact that half of the staff of the concerts are women, as said by an aqours seiyuu if i believe correctly? but i don’t have a source for this. you can watch the behind the scenes footage and see it for yourself tho!)

so it’s not that i’m delusional because love live (sunshine) is my favorite anime, and this is in no way a defense of the franchise (i could complain forever about sexualisation, pedophilia, gambling, etc). but sometimes we set the bar at "can the average cishet person consider this queer?", when the reality is that a big part of the people who enjoy certain stories are queer and see themselves in the characters, whether it was intended or not. and, for that to happen to so many people, there have to be queer people working on them trying their best to deliver those stories to us. we shouldn’t assume the worst even for franchises that are peak capitalism.

so coming to the last addition, i think that the comparison to g-witch is very accurate. we’re in 2023 and the world is moving forward despite companies trying their best to make their products marketable to homophobes. we also have a lot to thank to all the queer workers who were very smart to avoid censorship and make their voices resonate with us. i’m not saying we should stay complacent, and criticism and complaints do have an impact (especially on other fans reading them), but i think it’s nice to appreciate how some works were made with genuine love.

y'all I'm so mad with you Jayvik shippers. I get it, it was gay, I thought they were super fruity in season 1 already as well, but please have a critical thought. their arc in act 3 coopted the ENTIRE story including their storyline (referencing the last post I reblogged here): arcane is about classist oppression, Viktor got to suffer it firsthand as a Zaunite on Topside. this never was about an evil god, or the arcane, Zaun has been in shit since forever as far as I'm concerned. Viktor only started ascending to evil godhood in act 2 of this season. to make him or his delusion out as the real evil that needs to be combatted in order to fix everything is batshit. the villain isn't Viktor or Ambessa or Silco or Mel or Singed or whoever IT'S PILTOVER AS A SYSTEM. and I thought we were all agreeing on this already, but so many of you saw the poor gay Zaunite who just wanted to help turn evil and gobbled it up. Piltover got away without any blame, since Viktor wasn't even one of their people. Besides, I cannot be the only one who thinks that this all is incredibly out of character for Viktor and needed more explanation.

and don't get me wrong, the jayvik scene looked amazing and if my two faves astrally conected through divine bleach and tones while being existential about their relationship I'd also jump, trust me, I've watched she ra. and I can't even say I'd like it to be different, but it is taking up too much importance. it could've been a catalyst to unite Zaun and Piltover through a common cause and get them to work some systematic issues out, it could have been anything but this. none of Piltovers crimes were addressed, Zaun is still in poverty and the only systematic change that happened was one (1) Zaunite being allowed in the council, which really means nothing, because the council decides by vote and there is like seven Topside council members.

I'm very much disappointed by a show who I thought was really in synch with today's systematic issues up until now (and I'm mad at all you jayvik people for clogging up the tag, when there is so much to discuss) and that doesn't even take into account that they made the mentally ill character that most unstable and suicidal people relate to A LOT kill herself??

I have this story to show what i mean, it's a work in progress, about Michael, a young man who just finished getting his 17th PhD in an ivy league university, with a bright future ahead of him, and countless job opportunities being sent his way (including working on high positions in government!)...

He decides to confront his parents and tell them that he quits, this wasn't really him all along, and he wants to move back into their basement, play videogames, and do a part-time burger flipping job at the local Burger King...it gets HEATED but they accept his choice and support him, the story is about the repeated attempts of his former colleagues and professors and superiors to bring him back to the academy, to finish his work on Cold Fusion for example "no one else can do it but you! It could bring humanity into a new era of prosperity! Please, work your magic this one time!" "...naaaaaah"

Or his former philosophy professor goes "your unfinished book may hold the key to bridging the subject-object divide and solve objective morality, this would mark a before and after for MANKIND!!" "Nah i am trying not to think too hard as of late"

Or he gets harrassed by a wealthy tycoon "fifteen million dollars cash, no strings attached, and fifteen more after you finish your work on reconciling Marxism and Objectivism. And she storms out, like most guests in this story, fuming, grumbling and cursing under their breath.

It continues by having Michael come out as a straight trans woman to her parents, she's named Minerva now :3

And she has things going on in her burger flipping job too, like this transphobic former professor of hers, he goes in all like "hello ma...maaan? Womaaan?" And she's like "woman" "ok Michael Jackson...wait are you Michael?! The prodigy with 17 PhDs?!" "Used to be, that's not who i am anymore, what's your ord-" "i see you are one of those gender confused attack helicopter pansexual furries with funky pronouns" "(sighs) what's your order?" And it escalates with the guy proposing some research projects he needs a sharp male mind for, she turns them all down and ends up serving him a whopper with extra cheese. She also gets this scene where her coworkers see her banger ass home, the basement stacked with piles of pizza boxes and videogame cases, and they find the 17 PhDs framed on the walls of her parents' bedroom, and it becomes very silly. Long story short, she ends up wearing a cute skirt to work and she passes now :3.

Then, just after she dealt with some old university colleague bothering her with a desperate offer to develop perpetual movement machines, she gets comforted by this really nice handsome coworker of hers, they end up dating, he's named Joey and he's a riot as well. The story is still in progress, anything any of y'all want to add/change? Love and kisses :3

Life on mars!!! (The TV show not the song!)

Life on mars is a british crime drama from 2006. Initially set in 2003, it follows detective Sam Tyler, a 'modern' police officer who wakes up in 1973 following a car accident. Is he mad? In a coma? Or really back in time? This show CONSUMED while I was watching it. Like dreaming about it, constantly reference it, crying at the finale consumed. Brainrot of the year for sure.

So in answer to your questions:

My favourite character is the one and only Sam Tyler, The Character Of All Time. He's cringe yet based, the most sensible one yet also the most unhinged. hes also definitely has poor little meow meow energy. He can flip from cool and collected to crying and shaking and John Simm absolutely delivers in the role. You asked about whether it includes debates on reality and morality and yes!!! YES like that is the core of Life on Mars. Behind the tense action, engaging mysteries, hilarious dialogue, imersive set and costume design and great acting that is what LoM is all about!! Like is he in a coma? Back in time? Suffering from a break from reality? Trapped inside a 70s' cop show? (Oh yeah important detail LoM is a parody of 70s British cop shows and as someone who's into media history that's fun but also you don't have to be super familiar with the genre to enjoy it though). Ahh god I really want to properly get into it but that would be spoilers!! Let me just say the ending was simpulatiosly one of the most confusing yet satisfying things I've seen, amd the show can dip into the slightly ubsurd from time to time. And If you want discussions on morality it's the right show. Like 'Does it condem or condone the police?' 'Is it okay to do questionable things for the 'greater good'?' And what is that?' 'Should marginalised people try to work within an unjust system?' 'Should you try to change or take down the system, and is they even possible?' Sam Tyler positions himself as a sort of 'unwitting crusader' for equal rights (especially women's rights), under the guise of being 'just a decent bloke', but how appropriate and sincere are his efforts, considering his privileged position in society both as a white man and police officer? Honestly please please just watch the show I'm doing such a bad job explaining it.

Music is very much important to Life on Mars (as the name might suggest). Like the song Life on Mars plays diegeticaly in his car as Sam suffers the accident than becomes non diegetic as he wakes up in the past. And the show is filled with 70s music, if that's your thing.

Honestly all the characters are so much fun. They're all some shade of flawed and some are like, downright awful people, yet the show still can make you enjoy sympathise for them!? I'd say by the end Sam's little detective squad is like the world's most dysphunctional found family. But they're all completely iconic, just so entertaining, and definitely some good pathetic guy rep. Oh talking about rep there's no explicit queer rep (since that was on your list), but there is some fun homoerotic tension between Sam and his dci boss Gene Hunt who I can't belive I haven't mentioned yet because he's like the most iconic thing from Life on Mars. Like if you know anything about it, chances are it's him. His deal is that he's bigoted against basically everyone except himself, which sounds like a recipe for some pretty cringe inducing comedy but he's never presented as in the right for this and its funny in its ridiculousness rather than making fun of minorities. Like there's a scene where he straight up tells Sam that he's gay for being in love with a woman, completely unironically.

That's like the basics, and I suppose there are some caveats. The show is approaching 20 years old and it hasn't aged 100% perfectly (although I wouldn't condem it as capital P Problematic). (Particularly, I think it could do better with its sparse poc rep). Also to be responsible I should say there's basically a content warning for every bigotry and phobia under the sun because my god these characters can be awful people sometimes. But the show never condones it and although it's made light of, you're laughing at the bigots. (Like for example I'm autistic and while a small part of me instinctively tensed up at the ableism, I never felt I was being made fun of). It's not a show for people who can't handle nuanced characters or themes. But I really don't want to put you off because I must reiterate how good it is.

Every episode feels like eating a really rich satisfying meal and I'd look at the time bar and be amazed I'm only like 20 minutes in each time. I think a testament to its quality is the fact that I watched it with my family and we all loved it despite the fact we tend to have differing views on what we like to get out of media nd how we enjoy it. Me and my sister would talk and talk about the show as we watched it and argue about theories and characters- it's incredibly engaging. If you initally liked BBC Sherlock for being complex and deep but ultimately left really dispointed (like I was) then it's definitely the show for you because it has all the reality bending, complexity, twisting plot lines and deep imagery that BBC Sherlock claimed to have but actually delivers on it in a satisfying, thought provoking way and treats its characters and audience with so much more respect. There were so many opportunities they could have dropped the ball but they always keep a firm hold on it from start to finish.

So on to the practicalities: there's two series (seasons) comprising 8 episodes of 1 hour each. So 16 hours of show overall (although it feels like more in the best possible way). In the UK (where both it and I am from) it's very easy to watch, being on bbc iplayer and also fairly easy to pick up on dvd second hand (that's how I watched it). But outside of the uk I actually don't know how you legally access it (of course you can find everything online illegally!). Also there's lots of other reigion specific adaptations, (including a US one) but I'm talking about the british one and haven't seen any others. Finally, there's a sequal show called Ashes to Ashes, which has some cross over. I've heard good things about it and am watching it soon (it's also on iplayer), but haven't yet.

Few! That was a lot but I still feel I only scraped the surface. I hope that wasn't too much! Thank you for the opportunity to info dump. If you do check it out I hope you enjoy it. It was popular with the general British public when it aired (although I wouldn't know I was tiny and small at the time), but has not enjoyed the same fame and attention as other classic late 00's British TV like Doctor who or Sherlock, which I think is a big shame. The fandom is very little but incredibly passionate :)

EXCLUSIVE – A California district with over 40,000 students launched a review of books teachers bring into classroom libraries throughout dozens of schools following Fox News Digital reporting on a high school teacher introducing books with BDSM/kink material.

Fox News Digital reported in September that an English teacher at San Juan Hills High, previously identified on the school's website as Danielle Serio, and known "Flint," had a series of pornographic and sexually explicit books in a "classroom queer library." 

The Capistrano Unified School District told Fox News Digital on Monday that they had launched a review of books in teacher's classroom library in October. The email asked teachers throughout the district's 59 schools to immediately remove any books that violated district policy. 

"With these criteria in mind, if you find books that do not meet the criteria in BP 6163.1, please make them unavailable to students. If you are unsure, we encourage you to work with your colleagues in your departments and grade level teams, or reach out to your site administration, to make that determination," the email said.

In a video posted on November 21, Flint discussed the outrage surrounding the "queer classroom library." The teacher explained the books helped students to figure out who they are. 

"People get really mad about my queer library. I have like 200 titles that are specific to the LGBT community that I've been curating for over eight years. Don't get me wrong, my students love that library. It has been very helpful for many students figuring out who they are, how to relate to their peers," the teacher said. 

A book previously in the classroom library, "Everything you Ever Wanted to Know About Being Trans…," discussed BDSM, fetishes and a kink social media networking site. 

"I find the BDSM/kink community to be extremely open-minded and welcoming in every way; it's a place of sexual liberation," the book stated. "There is often more blanket level of acceptance of transgender people within the kink/BDSM (bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, sadism and masochism) scenes and sites such as FetLife."

"We all want to have sex with loads of people," the book states. "[T]he prostate gland… feels amazing when massaged. Lots of men, gay or straight, like how this feels."

"Let's talk about dildos: I think a lot of people assume that where there is no penis, a desperate sexual void is created, out of which something [bleep] shaped must ultimately slot in order to satisfy," the book continued. "I've only every slept with two women who enjoyed using dildos. I hate wearing a strap-on. I've only every done it once and NEVER AGAIN!"

It also included information on sex parties and orgies. 

"Saunas, or 'bath houses,' are dotted all over the country, and they are perfectly legal. People (many saunas run lesbian nights) pay some money to enter and then have a bit of a sauna and some random sex. Again, this is fine as long as you're safe."

When a TikTok user asked why "queer library" books are not in general circulation in the school," Flint said, "The library has some of these titles but getting them ‘into circulation’ is pretty challenging."

In another TikTok video, Flint questioned why parents have a hard time trusting educators. 

"I've been wondering lately why it's so hard for so many people in the general public to trust educators about education – the thing that we studied and do every day. It's been so long since they were in school, I'm wondering if they have extreme or outdated views about what's happening in the classroom," Flint said.

From watching Sherlock I never got the vibe that it was queerbaiting. Homophobic jokes aren't queerbaiting. I don't believe they implied that John and Sherlock would get together or that they courted gay fans by leading them on, they just made homophobic jokes about the characters' friendship and people tried to justify it to themselves that it was actually leading to something because the alternative is that it's just a homophobic show. But then again, that's just what I got from watching the show, I haven't seen any video essays about it.

I have absolutely got to disagree. listen, anyone who knows me knows that I am very strict about using terms that have Actual Concrete Meaning. I hate the way terms like "abuse", "gaslighting", "manipulation", "queerbaiting" etc have been co-opted to mean literally fucking everything that somebody doesn't like, and I only use the terms when I feel that this is literally hands-down what's going on. I went into all of the Sherlock video essays genuinely thinking that I was going to run across more "queerbaiting", i.e., the fandom being pissed that their OTP didn't get together, and taking a writing decision personally. essentially I assumed it would be the same deal as a majority of the "queerbaiting" dramas I see: the fandom mad because the show didn't pander to their every whim.

I was so fucking wrong. this is the dictionary definition of queerbaiting. the creators were 100% aware of the fandom and what was going on within it, and time after time they strung them along and then ridiculed them over everything from their theories, their enjoyment, and even for being invested in the show that you know, had a job to make viewers invested in. this was not just homophobic jokes. the homophobic jokes came during the time where the showrunners were actively ridiculing the fandom. before this, there were a lot of hints and teases and set-ups, where it looked like something might happen, and then it was turned into a joke -- not even a homophobic one, necessarily. for example, the scene where Sherlock is confessing something to John, and it's all intimate, and Sherlock looks so troubled, and the music swells, and Sherlock is like "I have something to tell you...", and every single part of the cinematography is coded as a personal, romantic confession... and then Sherlock is like "Sherlock is actually a girl's name lol" and that's it. you're mad if you think the showrunners weren't doing that deliberately, because they enjoyed stringing the fandom along and making fun of them for... everything, really.

finally, if you need any proof that this shit was malicious, please remember the entire episode that they dedicated to making fun of fan theories. literally the whole episode centered around this theme, to the extent that the episode featured a group of people dedicated to finding out how Sherlock survived. they were the same ages as the Sherlock fandom online, and repeated many of the same theories that could be found online. one of the group members even suggested that Sherlock and Moriarty had faked their deaths to run off together, and she was openly ridiculed on the show by the other group members. the episode even included Sherlock and Moriarty going in for a kiss, and the scene cutting off before they did it. it also featured a man coded as a crazy conspiracy theorist going mad and ripping down his It's Always Sunny-style wall of speculation and newspaper clippings and notes. the show was literally ridiculing the fandom for being too invested in the show that they had been told to get invested in. the showrunners had strung them along and promised them more, which they never delivered -- the queerbaiting was only part of it, but given the show's history with everything else, you cannot convince me that the queerbaiting was not intentional and malicious.

the homophobic jokes weren't the "queerbaiting". the homophobic jokes came after the queerbaiting, to really hammer home to the fans that they were stupid for ever hoping. this was genuinely some of the absolute worst creator treatment of fans I've ever seen, and if you're still unsure whether or not this was legit queerbaiting, I beg you to take an hour and watch some video essays on it. the general mistreatment of the fandom (and how terribly the show was put together to begin with) is covered very well in Sherlock Is Garbage, and Here’s Why, and the depth of the queerbaiting is covered in intense detail in Tumblr’s Greatest Conspiracy: The Story of TJLC.

so its pretty clear if you look at the timeline of madlyn it went from ashlyn not really liking gadget at all to being like !! acc she's alr !! save me a seat at movie night bestie !! to kissing her on opening night alr so that in itself already gives me plot of enemies to friends to lovers.

if i remember correctly (this is all off the top of my head please bare with me yall) like the first time maddox speaks directly to the camera in one of those "the office"-like interviews she talks about how she's for "aqcuired taste" (aka she's not for everyone) and how much that acc hurts her. WHICH IS TOTALLY FUCKING VALID. if i heard that shit come out from someone's mouth about me you best believe i'm gonna keep that in mind every mf time i speak to a stranger, whether it be at the goddamn gas station or during some ice breakers at some community event. she also stated that after the last summer, many of the friends she made at camp had moved on from it, leaving her behind (ofc we all know this kinda includes maddison but i can only assume there was others, too) so what im saying in this is that maddox was most likely desperate to make friends over this summer with the others, wildcat or not. she finds multiple common grounds with ashlyn, too, with both of them talking (arguing also ig but eh enemies to lovers i say) about their birthcharts !!! (gay. once again i will get to that)

THE BIRTHCHART DRAMA :O

ash obviously takes maddox thinking she knows ash better than ash knowing ash to heart and believes that this girl is just some nosey, rude girl that is friends with her cousin from camp. but, quickly changes over time when she finds out that a) she was in fact NOT born at the time she thought she was (rip) and b) maddox was literally making POLITE CONVERSATION and SAYING WHAT SHE THOUGHT !! :O she wasn't completely disagreeing with ashlyn over that whole "i totally get fire sign vibes from you!" thing. ash did say "oh no i'm 100% a capricorn rising!!" afterwards. even tho maddox defo disagreed girlie didn't take that shit further. she was like "!! alr !! :)"

and then, ofc she goes off on the whole "you know, im a feminist right?" LIKE. girl the fact you are GOING ONNNNNNN about it omg- "and MADDOX had the NERVE to tell ME i was a LEO RISING" GIRL. STOP HATING- *opens book. reads about both capricorn and leo rising. panics and over thinks about ONE conversation she had with maddox*

and THEN maddox literally comes up and apologises if she took it too far, but ashlyns stILL like "ur wrong but its ok!! :P" which causes a whole "are you SURE you don't have any leo in ur big three-" which only builds up more tension and an argument (over birthsigns ik) while maddox is literally just interested in whether she's got leo in her big three, ashlyn is taking it PERSONALLYYYYY for far too long until she realises "oH never mind i am a leo rising and she was just helping" 💀

and then further down in another episode of s3 (if you think i can remember what episode when i havent watched season three since release you're mad) we see maddox open up more. i also want to point out that she had NOT opened up (at least on camera) to no one. not ONE wildcat or any character for that matter other than ash. ofc we have that scene where EVERYTHING blows up (real housewives of camp shallow lake yk what scene im talking about) (also i so called her being queer before that bombshell but anyways) and im guessing the episode after where we see maddox and ashlyn painting set pieces for frozen and gadget talks about this mysterious ex girlfriend, maddison.

FINALLY, after we had watched them at the beginning not really (more ash, again, but im running w it), we see them get CLOSERRRR- wanna also make a note that them two get EXTREMELY close in that reality tv episode prior tho like they were stuck to the gdamn hip OMG

now. this episode was enough to fill my lgbt heart with JOY for years to come. (Since it won best picture Oscar as a horror flick, which is a commercial genre category like romance, and everyone knows horror separates from romcom with a very slim line - mostly musical.) And let's consider Love, Simon as the latest mainstream success in the world of gay.

They aren't perfect baselines but Imma talk super broad brush strokes here.

Until We Meet Again could do it

It has the best story structure and most consistent acting over all. Also it's not a rom com so it would play better over here.

Also UWMA's narrative is just exactly Asian enough to be approachable. (Please don't get mad, I just think the reincarnation red thread mythos is easier to grok for confused westerners than the social structure, rural location, and heart transplant of 1000 Stars or the ghost and religious beliefs of He's Coming to Me which would be my other contenders.) It's our intelligence as a general audience I doubt, not Thailand's content.

The cooking aspect of UWMA is extremely relatable (even though it's Thai deserts) and as the small town baker trope is HUGE in contemporary romance and cozy mysteries right now I think this would be a big selling point.

Here's the broad changes it'd need:

It would have to be tightened up A LOT, it's a 17 hour run time and it could probably be cut back to half that, let's call it a 6-10 ep miniseries, like The Crown or Bridgeton. Western audiences are hugely impatient.

The series and each episode should open on DeanPharm, not KornIn. In fact, I would suggest making the KornIn story line stingers for each episode, not starters. Use their arc for cliff hanger tension instead of what it is now, which is mostly foreshadow.

More attention paid to background music, it'd have to be swapped out and altered.

Strip out all slapstick and sound effects, there aren't many but still, it all has to go. Yes, including Minaow falling all the time. Similarly, all product placement. Western audiences break suspension of disbelief with these elements, we tend to find them very jarring, and are likely to shut down and turn off as a result.

All English language logos have to be masked.

Specific Edits: KornIn

They'd have to put the trigger off screen and no blood spatter (it can be alluded too but not shown, otherwise there is fixed NC17 rating). Right now no USA based streaming service is going to pick UWMA up because of this specific content. You can't have blood spatter in a romance and hit the right audience demographic, restrictions are too high. The romance audience, mostly straight women, many of whom have children, is more likely to consider rating than any other audience. (AKA they want to watch something and not have to worry their kid might see some of it.)

I'd probably put a slight a sepia filter over their scenes as well. UWMA didn't do great on historical setting so far as wardrobe, makeup, set dressing, and hair were concerned. There has to be something more to alert audiences to the time slip.

The funeral scene would have to be a lot shorter. (See dwelling on the maudlin below.)

And like I said above, I'd rearrange placement of their timeline as well.

Specific Edits: DeanPharm

Should probably cut all the uni girls shipping and FB public shaming storyline at the beginning as well. This could all be axed without impacting plot and a general western audience wouldn't Understand any of it anyway.

They'd need to recut or fade out the kissing/sex scenes earlier because of the dubcon effect that Pharm's constant flinching and hunching gives. That's not considered necessary or sexy in western sex scenes, so it would have to be edited out to turn most audiences off. Since the kiss and intimacy scenes are pretty long running in this show, it wouldn't be difficult. (Also see above with the kids looking over shoulders.)

There's a lot of long cuts on Pharm crying that could be cut down/out too. Western audience don't like to dwell on the maudlin, it's considered overdramatic and in poor taste. There's an element of impatience with overt shows of emotion in a "YES we GET it" kind of way.

Honestly while this seems like a lot to do, it actually wouldn't be too difficult for a good editor to execute. There's a LOT of content to work with in UWMA.

Notice I don't have much to say about WinTeam?

They come off as very modern and easy with each other as a couple and I think this is one of the reasons they are so popular. Also their cuts and scenes are shorter and better paced (product placement is the only issue.)

Finally, I'd consider a dubbed version.

Don't get me wrong, I hate dubbed stuff, but in this instance it might work really well. There is a large romance consuming (TV watching) demographic that hate's captions, unfortunately likely to be the same demographic who would find the Thai language off-putting. (We talking LifeTime and Hallmark here.)

Imma add once again that I took this specifically on how to make a BL palatable for as big an audience as possible, so it will sell well and have as large a reach as possible.

Which means all my recommended edits are from a marketing perspective. So objectively this is to sell to a streaming service acquisitions department first, so not just what I think the market wants but what THEY (usually 10-12 old white dudes) think the market wants.

I'm not sure any of us would *like* the final version as much as the original. But that's kinda the point, it wouldn't be for us anymore.

I'm not fond of the pairing but from what I've seen General public actually loves Sylki very much. Even the trade reviews called the relationship "genius" which,,,ok. Someone did a poll on various platforms, yt, reddit, fb, twitter etc comparing which ship is better (Lokius or Sylki) and it was Sylki who won by large margin in the end. I suppose mostly they just don't care because it's sci fi and a pairing in a totally unrealistic show, and after Wandavision I guess weird ships are 'in' but yeah it makes you think. But the writers already said they won't give in to the fan pressure bc they have their own story to tell (which ok, valid, you do you) but idk. I guess we will get even more Sylki in second season. Tom already said Loki won't stop searching for her

Just as a disclaimer (bc I don’t want people coming for me): I think lokius is really cute, and I love fics/art/headcanons about them, but I never thought they were canonically romantically interested in each other. I never thought lokius was gonna be canon, and I never wanted it to (because I didn’t want ANY romance in the series), so I don’t even include it in my argument against s*lki.

The viewing public, in general, tends to heavily skew towards heterosexual-presenting ships. Partially because a portion of the general audiences are homophobic, and partially because a lot of non-tumblr fans are so sick of hearing tumblr stans go on and on and on about how they were queerbaited by certain gay ships not becoming canon, when in reality, said ships are trash.

Listen. I sympathise with that. I get that. I know I’m beating a hornet’s nest with this, but…. D*stiel? J*hnlock? St*cky? None of those were written in any way to invoke queer undertones, they were always supposed to be platonic, and tbfh even as platonic relationships the first two are literally toxic and abusive as hell, anyway.

So I definitely understand how a casual straight fan on Twitter or Instagram would see some of those same crazy “we were queerbaited” tumblr stans ranting about lokius not becoming canon and how much s*lki sucks and……. it makes sense that they’d be like “These people are just pissed that their gay ship isn’t canon, that’s why they hate s*lki.”

But here’s the thing. I don’t think those people realise how callous it is to say something like that when the only reason queer kids are so quick to ship any two male characters who express a modicum of affection for one another, is that they’re so fucking starved for representation in the first place, they’re willing to see queer romance in any same-sex interaction. They’re just that desperate. That’s where the whole crazy gay stan thing comes from. And yeah, it’s annoying that these people put their whole chest into defending gay ships that are total trash, but you have to realise why they do it.

So, what I’m saying is, for s*lki shippers- who are already winning, because their straight ship had the privilege of easily becoming canon despite all its flaws- to look at queer people who are frustrated to the point of tears that they were once again conned out of any form of queer rep (for the mcu’s first canon queer character, for gods sake) after actually genuinely being queerbaited this time (with his bisexuality/genderfluidity)….. and to essentially gloat that their straight ship became canon and taunt queer people by saying “oh you’re just desperate for two men to kiss”………… idk, man. It just seems real cold to me. Reeks of straight privilege and heteronormativity.

Ok, so with that being said.. let me respond to your actual ask lol.

I’m not surprised at all that s*lki won the popularity polls. I think a large reason for that is the fact that it was pitted against lokius, which sorta rubs a lot of casual viewers the wrong way for reasons listed above. I’m also not surprised that casual viewers liked it outside of its opposition to lokius- because, um, casual viewers aren’t very smart.

They tend to analyse exactly nothing, they don’t look any deeper than the surface, and if the writers of a show stick a hot man and woman together under a blanket, they eat it up. Because the narrative tells them it’s sweet. Just like the narrative tells them Loki is a greasy asshole who had no character development up until this point, and they eat that up too. Just like the narrative tells them that sylvie’s the best thing since sliced bread, and they eat that up too. Just like the narrative tells them it’s completely in character for Loki to try to subjugate a group of 3 random Mongolians in the middle of the dessert for absolutely no reason other than his “narcissism”, and they eat that up too. Just like the narrative tells them that one throwaway line about liking “a bit of both” is somehow this groundbreaking example of lgbt representation, and they eat that up too……… See the pattern here?

And as far as being concerned about the pseudo-incest angle, I don’t even think casual fans even dug that deep. They literally just saw two main characters- a pretty white woman and a hot white man- doing cool fight scenes together and giving each other goo goo eyes, and they were automatically sold.

And the writers saying “we won’t give in to fan pressure, we have our own story to tell” is honestly complete bullshit. What the hell is the POINT of working for a corporate film company and telling a story on screen if not to please the fans??? They do what they do to get people to watch their shows to get lots of money. That’s literally what they’re there for. Mike Waldron must have a pretty damn inflated sense of self importance if he thinks his own “artistic vision” or what the hell ever is the priority here lmao.

And I wanna be mad about Season 2, I really do. But at this point Season 1 ruined the character so much for me that I legitimately don’t even care what direction they take him in.

You say that like she's a bad person, she's really not. The curse she placed on Eda wasn't intended to be permanent and probably wasn't even supposed to take the effects that it did. She was most likely scammed. I mean look at how she reacts when Eda transforms for the first time. She also feels guilty enough about it to throw herself into an abusive situation and spend almost her whole life trying to make up for it. Lastly, yes she hurt Luz, but let's not forget that Belos threatened her life upon Eda's capture and Lilith was running out of time and had no other option. Ah yes the victim blaming, the one thing that almost everyone does to Lilith and barely anyone talks about.

There is literally not a single Lilith stan out there who blames Eda for getting cursed. You're just mad that your victim blaming towards Lilith got called out so you silence us by lying about how we do the same thing to Eda.

No one is making Eda out to be the villain either, the only example I can find of this is a few fanfics where she treats Lilith a lot more harshly than she should, and even then, scenes like that are written in a positive light as if you're supposed to be on Eda's side, so with that in mind, the writers of these fics are clearly not even Lilith stans. In terms of how actual stans treat Eda, the worst they do is make her slightly ignorant of Lilith's trauma, kinda like the fandom, minus the "slightly", until she grows as a character and learns to see the red flags. If that's the problem you're talking about, then breaking news: Eda's not perfect either. She has flaws too just like literally everyone else in the show and people are allowed to write about them

Tell me the truth: are people making playlists for Lilith that include a lot of sad and angry songs because she's not a happy person anyway so there wouldn't be a point in having any happy songs, or are they making "trauma" playlists? There's a difference

There is far more Eda angst out there than there is for Lilith, where are you finding so much Lilith angst? LILITH is the one who's traumas are being ignored while Eda's gets all the attention. No one is saying that Lilith has worse trauma, we're only saying that her's is also severe and that it definitely exists. Also funny how you're allowed to be mad at us for comparing Lilith and Eda's trauma (once again lying about us), then you go on to do the exact same thing and say that EDA'S trauma is worse. Even if, hypothetically speaking, Eda did have it worse, that doesn't mean Lilith doesn't have the right to be traumatized. Both of them have trauma, both should be recognized. Also, Lilith had far more going on in her life than just the guilt of her actions, she was was implied to have been psychologically and maybe physically abused, and was probably even tortured. Stop ignoring all the red flags and condemn the actual abuser (Belos) before you criticize anything the abused (Lilith) has done.

Hi! I'm a gay fan of 911 and I have a question about the whole Buddie fandom. As much as I like Buck and Eddie, it's frustrating that a HUGE part of the fandom is pushing for these two characters to get together instead of putting energy into supporting Hen & Carla and Michael & Dave. Not to mention Carlos and TK in Lone Star. Can you explain to me the appeal of wanting these two men together? Wouldn't it be more interesting to see two heterosexual males just be able to bond in a non-toxic fashion? That's something we don't get to see often on television.

Hey! This is MAD long lmao I am so sorry! You caught me on a day I felt like talking! Also this took like a year to answer you lolololol. This does have a few ʻhot takesʻ so please be warned! So like in this essay....

So first I am also apart of the LGBTQIA+ community, so I do understand how it could come across as a fetish or being non supportive of the current canonically LGBTQIA+ characters, however I think a lot of the interest around Buddie and the want for them to be confirmed as a couple is how they are being written. Me personally I knew since s2 e1 Buck and Eddie were written not as rivals but as two people who would eventually become friends, but it wasn’t until the Christmas episode with the elf assuming Buck was Chris’s dad and Eddie’s partner that I was like ‘hold on!’ because I was really hoping Abbey would return and I didn’t see Eddie as a possible Buck live interest because of that. The elf’s comment wasn’t played off like most other shows would (think Dean and Sam arriving anywhere in Supernatural) it made me go back and look at the other episodes to see exactly how Buck and Eddie were being framed/written. And as we have moved into further seasons I think there has been a shift in how Buddie is being written, in s3 it was very much like two people progressing into a deeper friendship then the blood clot/lawsuit gets in the way and they both have to deal with emotions surrounding that, then Buck’s response to Eddie being trapped (we see how is he when Boddy is trapped in a fire WITH A GUNMAN, it’s emotional but not to the point is is with Eddie), even the love interests feel very pushed on us and there’s so little banter between Buddie about their gfs and how they feel about these new beginnings. It feels off, not like a friendship in the slightest, more like two people trying to force something and not wanting to deal with any other feelings. Then when Eddie gets shot and reveals Buck is Chris’s legal Guardian in the event Eddie dies, that’s huge, and he did this after only a year of knowing Buck (I have friends with kids. I’ve known one of them for FIVE years, I’m at their house every week, the kid calls me family. I’m person #10 on the list of ‘who gets my kid if I die’, not #1 lol) It just feels like it’s all building up to something, and people are getting tired of waiting for that something! We’re all emotionally tired from the past two years, and probably from many shows queerbaiting us and this is something that could happen, seems to be something the actors are ok with and the fans want. So why do they keep drawing it out. This isn’t about us demanding they ignore the chance to write a healthy platonic male friendship, or forcing two characters to be gay, it’s about holding the writers to what they’ve implied and seeing what could come of it.

Also think of it like this; If Buddie is confirmed it will still be a good example of a healthy friendship which then developed into something else, like Booth/Bones! Showing the natural progression of friendship to relationship that happens a lot in real life. It’s two men who previously (on screen at least) have only been with woman, but now they have an emotionally connection with someone which they then develop and explore. This could be 911’s first nontoxic depiction of two gay characters coming together, because sorry not sorry the canon couples aren’t perfect (which does humanize them) but they also reenforce harmful troupes that plaque the LGBTQIA+ community, which I’m sure you understand: TK was a drug addict, who only got with Carlos at first cause he was hot and sex was TK’s new addition (all gay men are sex addicts who do drugs and sleep with anything that moves). Carlos was ashamed and wanted to keep TK on the downlow (poc gay men want to pretend to be straight but have free access to gay sex). Hen cheated on Karen seemingly the first chance she got (lesbians can’t handle monogamy when pushed, and cheat on their long term partners). All known and documented troupes that happen far too often.

I’m not saying Buddie is some gay jesus ship that’s gonna save the entertainment industry but if done right it could prove to be one of the few healthy depictions of two men getting into a gay relationship we have. If they plan it out correctly, show us the relationship development, like they did with Maddie/Chim for example, Buddie could be used as a positive example of a gay fictional relationship (I really could go into depth about this. I probably should tbh).

As for not supporting Hen and KAREN, or Michael and DAVID, I think fans do support them! The writers don’t. If you read fanfics Henren and Michael/David are featured heavily in many fics, and ik some people might say ‘well they’re only there so Buddie can talk about their gay side!!’ but both these couples have their own fans and fanfic tags! They aren’t just plot devices in Buddie stories. There is a huge side of the fandom that supports Henren and wants to see more of them and their family. Same with Michael and David, during the episode where Michael and Bobby team up to find that plastic surgeon who was working illegally many people where ecstatic that we were getting more Michael/David content and that David was getting more than a couple lines. But sadly it seems like the writers only want to delve into these story lines when they need filler, they even miss opportunities to include these other LGBTQIA+ characters when it makes sense;

When Chris is sad and wants more human connection, instead of bring Harry + Michael/David and Denny+Nia+Henren back into the picture (and yes I understood at the time the pandemic was bad (lmao still is!!), but all the actors at some point would have/had crossed over into each other’s ‘bubbles’, so ALL the actors would have been exposed to each other so getting the children together with adults they had ALREADY been with during shooting wouldn’t have been a super spreader event) but instead they brought in Ana after only two on screen dates and pretended like it was a logical thing for someone who’s up to that point been extremely careful with their child.

They really could have pushed the ‘118 is a family!’ message here and included the canonically gay supporting characters, and the lesbian main character(s) but they did not and instead chose to push the Ana/Eddie coupling even though they hadn’t properly developed it yet. The writers themselves don’t seem to care about developing their canonically gay characters and including them more than they have to but fans are continuously developing Henren and Michael/David with hc and fics.

I’d like to use your logic against you for a second, in s1 we have a very healthy, platonic friendship between Chim/Bobby but that got written out to the point they are more like boss/employee unless the scene calls for them to seem closer, we now have Bobby and Michael friendship but again we hardly see Michael. On Lone Star we have Owen and Judd as a really, really good example of a healthy male friendship but we see Judd more often with Tommy now then we do with Owen, and in s2 it’s overshadowed by Owen trusting Charlie from Twilight and constantly getting fucked over! Why can’t the writter just be happy with these happy, healthy, emotionally well male-male friendship they’ve already included and expand upon them. There’s enough drama because the show literally involves burning buildings and people’s lives being at risk from some natural/man made disaster ever 12 seconds. Does it need to have so much interpersonal conflict and male peacocking??

This book’s been through phases when it comes to book covers, so I'll be judging them. Book covers are important to me, so that's why I care. My views on the cover don't reflect the views on the book itself. I really love the book and think it deserves more attention. Remember, this is all just my opinion. (I don't own any of these images. I found them online)

1982 (original) — 7/10

It's cute. It's not my favorite, but for the first cover for this book, it's nice. Especially when we could've gotten a cover that, according to Nancy Garden looked “...as if Annie is going to swoop down on Liza—almost like a vampire attacking”. That cover was never used, thankfully, but I'm kind of interested it exactly what it looked like.

Date unknown — 2/10

It's pretty low-effort and the art’s awkward. They look elderly? It's also not accurate to how Liza is described in the book; her hair is brown (not that it matters majorly). It doesn't look like they tried with this one. I could only find one photo of this edition. The source of the photo called it “an old and well-read library copy” and the article was from May 11, 2011.

2019 Spanish edition cover — 8/10

Very cute! It reminds me of American Girl books for some reason. I like the fun colors. It would attract kids to it, which is great as the novel is for kids and up. The relationship between Liza and Annie is pretty clear. And they have their rings! Aww!

September 5th, 2017 — 6/10

This is the most recent cover I found (EDIT: my brain made a blip and I just realized; I meant the most recent English cover, of course). I'm not normally a fan of photo-covers, as art just looks better on book covers to me. But I like this one. The colors are nice. It could be more creative in appearance. Like maybe an actual scene in the book could be depicted. And the girls on it look like they could have any kind of civil relationship. It's important to the novel that they're romantic girlfriends. But on the other hand, if a possible homophobic parent were to see this on their kid’s bookshelf they wouldn't get suspicious or mad at their kid, which is good for their safety. “Don’t mind that book, Mother. Just a story about some gals bein’ pals!”

1998 — 4.5/10

Eh. It's not the worse, but it could be better. Nancy Garden apparently said herself that Annie looked like a school teacher in this one. I agree. There’s the stigma that adult lesbians seduce young girls into “relationships” and/or turn them gay and this cover might perpetuate that stigma. Funny ‘cause this book touches on that stereotype. Of course, the actual novel’s text tells a different story, but people do judge books by their covers, so this could've been done in better taste or with more thought. When disregarding that, the art is very nice. Just shrink Annie down a bit, please. You clearly know how to draw smaller high school girls, looking at Liza here.

2007 — 4/10

I expected to give this one a lower rating, but when compared to other worst ones, it's not that bad. Again, I don't like photo covers, and this one is way worse than the 2017 cover. I like that they have the rings, but these girls don't look like Annie and Liza very much. This also might get the book mistaken as a Christmas story. There's Christmas in it, but it's not. This edition included the interview with Nacey Garden, so I like that. The cover’s just... kind of bland.

1992 — 10/10

By far my favorite! This edition looks like the one I own (specifically the one pictured on the right). This cover was preferred by Nancy Garden, but that's not the only reason why I like it so much. The art is lovely. It's clear Liza and Annie are girlfriends. Just... the tone of the book shines through this cover. Two girls in love who have to face adversity, but do it together. It's just very nice. I wish it were the cover used now. I'm kind of surprised it isn't. To me, it just feels like one of those classic book covers that rarely get replaced, like The Great Gatsby “celestial eyes” cover or something. I'd love to know who illustrated this cover and maybe see more of their work, so if anyone knows I’d love to be told who. I saw the book with the 2007 cover about a year (?) before I read it, and even though the synopsis sounded good, the cover turned me away (plus I had a basket of book already). I eventually forgot about it. I then saw this cover and was immediately drawn. Obviously, since I bought it in 2020, you can still buy this edition (secondhand). It was inexpensive for an edition that's not printed anymore. I initially found this version on Goodreads, and they give multiple options to buy it from, as well as preview the first 28-ish pages. I love and recommend this book. I've written my own full review of the book itself if you're interested.

Here's an ask: what are some betty & jug moments or scenes that you've always wanted to see on the show? I don't necessarily mean relationshipy stuff (altho yes sure that too), but investigation stuff, family dynamic stuff, serpent stuff, etc etc. Expand this ask outside of bughead too, if you'd like!

A good but difficult question!  Let's see, let's see...

- Jughead proposing for realsies is one I desperately want.  Like, he's had two pseudo-proposals already, where is his real one?  I deserve to see it.  Bonus points if it's impulsive and he uses one of the rings he's always wearing to do it.

- I really, *really* want Betty and Jughead to be engaged and then do some crimes and have to rush up their wedding so they won't have to testify against each other.  I will also accept them dating but not engaged, and then Betty is going into emergency mode, but Jughead is like, "So, uh, I've had this engagement ring ready for like three months, and I know this is a bad time, but will you marry me?" And then Betty says yes and they get married and don't go to jail.

- I want to see Betty and Jughead have to makeout as a cover when they're caught somewhere they shouldn't be.  Like, that's a classic, I want to see it.

- I need more of Betty and Jughead doing shady shit while both wearing their Serpent jackets, I want scenes of them acting as a clear power couple, I deserve this.

- More dark bughead!  I don't even care how it manifests, I want them doing morally dubious things because the ends justify the means.

- Vengeance quest!  I want Jughead to go on a vengeance quest like the one Betty went on for him in season 4.  I deserve this parallel.

- Cooking!  I want to see Betty and Jughead cooking for each other, bonus points if it's Jughead doing the cooking because Betty deserves to be taken care of for once.

- Jughead getting better at writing!  I just want the show to hire someone who actually is good at writing prose to write his narrative segments.  Just, please, show, you want me to believe he is a good writer, so just hire someone who can write prose, I am BEGGING you.

- Betty and Gladys!  I was ROBBED of seeing them together!  In fact, I desperately wanted the whole Jones+Betty family to sit down to breakfast or dinner or something because I bet it would be so awkward.

- Betty and Jellybean!  Betty, Jellybean, and Jughead!  I already made my post about this, technically, but I would still love to see it, especially the three of them together.

- Serpents + Betty!  I so wish they had explored this more, to have the Serpents see Hardcore Scary Betty and Betty see how much the Serpents and Jughead are friends.  The 3x01 Hot Dog mission was good, but I wish I had seen them working more as a team in some heisty situation.  Bonus points for throwing Cheryl into the mix.

- Toni joins the Blue and Gold!  I'm still mad I didn't get this.  I crave Betty/Toni interactions, and I think Toni would make an interesting addition to the investigation team, and I'd enjoy seeing them all in planning mode, only for Betty and Jughead to drift off into "Investigations are sexy" mode and then Toni has to spray them with water to get them to focus.

- Jughead + Serpents!  All permutations of this are important to me.  I think Jughead's friendships with the Serpents are really interesting because they're based on a common experience that Jughead just doesn't share with anyone else.  There's a sense of community and family, of sorts, that I get from the teen Serpents, the feel of those friends who you can not speak to for ages but then easily slip back into normal patterns once you see each other again.  I think they're four people of varying levels of impulsiveness and "I will FIGHT YOU, right here, right now" who have to keep each other in check.  Like, there is not one single one of them who stops the others from doing stupid shit; they ALL are capable of doing stupid shit and picking fights on principle alone, but there's also usually at least one of them who's like, "Ok, guys, calm down", and I find that hilarious.  Also, bonus points for being three grumpy people and also Fangs, a ray of sunshine and king of bad decisions.  I really wish we got more of Fangs as a speaking character; for all he's had screentime, he doesn't talk much, and that leaves him with considerably less characterization, and it's frustrating.  Also, I wish we had gotten more of watching them play G&G, I find these seemingly tough kids playing tabletops games to be the funniest fucking thing.

- Betty + Veronica!  I would like to see more of this friendship, and specifically I'd like to see Betty supporting Veronica, because we haven't gotten much of that.

- Betty + Kevin!  I wish I knew more about their friendship and could see more of it.  I want to see Kevin try and pry details about all the drama in Betty's life out of her.  I also wish we had gotten to hear even one of his gossip columns.

- Jones family!  I just want more of the Joneses, they're such a disaster family.  Like, I want more of every permutation of this dynamic, it's fascinating.  I mean, I especially want Jughead and Jellybean, but I'm also interested in FP and Gladys, FP and Jellybean, Gladys and Jellybean, Jughead and Gladys (outside of drug lord problems), the whole family at once.  I know it won't happen, but I'd love to see the whole family reunited because it's clearly something Jughead wants and I want him to have all the things he wants.

- Unrelated to Betty and Jughead, but, more than anything, I want a shot of Veronica standing in front of that painting of herself ala Hiram.  We have been doing parallels with them and "If Veronica isn't careful, she could become like her father" stuff since season 2 at the latest, I DESERVE this shot.

- Archie's gay awakening!  Look.  Look, they have given Archie so many homoerotic friendships, and RAS famously wrote a play about Archie being gay that he got a cease and desist letter for.  Everything should come full circle and RAS's Archie tv show should include Archie's gay awakening.  Bonus points if he's with Reggie.

- Betty v Hiram!  Everyone else has gotten at least one season where they went up against Hiram, Betty deserves hers.  Granted, she would probably take him down, or almost do so, so it might be best saved for the last season, but still, I want it.

And I think that's it?  At least, I think I've got everything I can think of for now.
