FRAGMENTS OF FOREVER | E.M.
Pairing: elijah mikealson x fem!reader
Word count: 1k+
Warning: mentions drinking wine, little short (for me at least kcjs), just fluff
Summary: Elijah has you hiding away with him at the compound and you help him let loose for a night.

Tumblr media
You were putting in no effort at all to keep your presence in the compound a secret, and Elijah expected no less. Successfully convincing you to stay with him was an accomplishment on its own and he had no intention of pushing you for much more than that. Hence the almost amused smile littering his lips as he heard the music streaming from his bedroom, walls practically vibrating due to the sheer volume. Though, despite that, he could still hear you existing among the chaos. Your laugh, your voice as you attempted to sing along, your scattered breathing, it guided him up the stairs almost like a sailor being entranced by a siren song.
The smile only settled deeper into his face as he opened the door to find you balancing yourself on his bed, attention solely on the glass of wine gripped in your hand, threatening to spill onto his white sheets as you allowed the rhythm of the song to do with your body as it pleased. His stare was shameless as he took you in, spontaneity in the Mikealson residence was rare and if it were to present itself, it very rarely paired itself with such elegantly chaotic beauty which he only found in his precious lover.
“Elijah,” your velvet voice gasped once your dancing had led your gaze to the door, the vampire leaning against the doorframe while his fingers moved numbly to remove his vest and blazer.
“Little love,” he breathed in reply, and you giggled, carefully moving to the edge of the bed, sipping at your glass as your eyes remained ever glued to his.
“Oh, do say you’ll dance with me, my love?” you swooned, looking down at him with a simple stare that could convince him of the most sinful suggestions, yet begging for the opposite.
“To this?” he tutted, quick to rush to your side and reach out a steadying hand when your step down from the bed turned into a stumble. “I don’t believe myself to be stuck in my ways, but I do believe dancing is to be done to proper music,” he explained, raising a knowing brow at you when he stole the glass from your hands, head tilting when he took a sip of the red wine before placing it onto the ottoman in front of the bed.
“Proper music, he says,” you mused, fingers now free to travel over his chest, settling on his tie as you tugged lightly at the material to free it from his neck. “Tell me, in your informed opinion, good sir, what do you consider proper music?”
“Chopin, Bach, Mozart,” he paused, eyes roaming your face as you giggled at him. “Am I amusing you, Y/n?” he teased, catching you slightly off guard when a daring hand was placed onto the small of your back.
“Quite so,” you informed him as you threw the tie over your shoulder with furrowed brows. “We are not to slow-dance, Elijah, in fact, I’m not sure it could be called dancing at all,” you explained, a soft groan of objection being offered when you jumped out of his reach, rushing to find the remote that controlled the stereo, mischief in your eyes as you managed to turn the volume even higher.
“Is that so?” he hummed and laughed softly when you started doing exactly as you promised, dancing- no, jumping rhythmically- arms moving almost hysterically as you moved about, nothing but pure, unfiltered and unmatched excitement consuming you as the music sifted through you in an almost addictive way. “Am I to join you?” he shouted, only adding to your smile as you nodded, eagerly gesturing him towards you. “I feel foolish,” he admitted once his shoulders began moving to the beat, ridding himself of his shoes as he shimmied towards you.
“You look it too,” you laughed and reached for him, hands finding his as you found a common movement. “But don’t you feel free as well?” you pushed and he didn’t answer, hands tightening their hold on you as he pulled you about his bedroom, shifting between different movements and different surfaces for that matter, the smile not abandoning your lips for even a second.
“You’re madness in a bottle, love,” Elijah informed you as you toppled with him to the carpet, a breathless laugh filling the air as you turned only your head to see him. “How am I to hold onto any form of sanity, hmm?” he insisted, and though the words were clearly far from serious, he proved the notion by ever so gently lifting your hand from your side, a soft kiss placed to your wrist when he turned to look at you as well.
“Sanity,” you shrugged, shifting closer to him when he refused to let your hand go. “Sanity ran out the window the second I fell in love with you,” you explained, and there was no denying that fact as the two of you looked at each other, the gesture mimicking one of first encounters, every feature seeming new, undiscovered, and much like the first time you’d met each other, it was complete and utter- knock your feet out from under you- love at first sight.
“Of all the lives I’ve lived, this one proves to be the one to remake me the most, you…” he paused, soft lips brushing against your veins with another kiss. “You have merely shown me that my life has only now begun, upon seeing your face, upon hearing your voice, upon kissing your lips,” he smiled, focus shifting to your heartbeat now, he could hear it scatter, feel it under the delicate pressure of his thumb and it said what your words often failed to say.
It told him that you felt exactly the same.
“You’ll look back at me fondly then, on our little fragment of forever?” you suggested, gentle fingers tracing his cheekbone. “You’ll remember how we loved? How your existence shifted my soul, how mine shifted yours?” he nodded, smiling when you leaned your forehead against his.
“I’ll remember,” he promised, and you smiled as well. “It may only be a fragment, my Y/n, but it’ll be with me until I outlive time.”

Recovery
Chapter 9 of Ricochet (An Open Heart AU)
Catch up here: Series Masterlist
Chapter Synopsis: As Heather is set to recover, will her relationship with Rafael follow the same path?
Pairing: Rafael Aveiro x MC (Dr. Heather Song) | Bryce Lahela x MC (Dr. Heather Song) ft. PLATONIC Dr. Ethan Ramsey
Words: 1.4k+ | Genre: Crime, Suspense/Thriller, Romance
Rating/Warnings: Mature (16+) / themes of physical and emotional trauma
Author's Notes: This very very very angsty chapter was inspired by a favorite song of mine from Taylor Swift's 1989 album, Clean. Halfway through, I wrestled with the emotions of this chapter, and another song titled Say Something, a haunting duet by A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera helped me complete the rest of the narrative.
Thank you so much for taking time to read this series. Please let me know if you want me to include/remove you in the tags list. Also, disclaimer: Majority of the characters are owned by Pixelberry, except the main character Heather Song.

Rafael watched from a distance as the doctors scrambled to revive her back to life.
Seeing her actually slip away terrified him. But what was more horrific is how he could only watch on helplessly, with no ability to come to her rescue. It shook him to the core.
For so long he believed that he can be her own personal savior, her superman. But during the most crucial of times, the sinking knowledge that he simply can't fulfill the one promise he made gnawed at him life a nightmare coming to life.
The fact that he himself had inflicted a deep wound on her heart just a few days ago crushed him all the more.
He had no right to be here, he realized. He had already gave up that privilege on the day he chose his ego over her. It was when he decided to fulfill his fantasy of being someone else's hero, rather than coming to terms with the truth that she will never need him the way he wanted to.
Even when the flashback of them at Donahues, where he asked her to consider taking him back, nipped at his already guilt-ridden heart. The sheer audacity of him to demand that from her, only a selfish person without care would ask someone to do that.
The illusion that he hold onto for so long crumbled into dust. With it, was his determination to cling to what once was.
"She's going to be okay, Raf," his silent torment was interrupted by Elijah, who approached him in the corner of the room.
He looked up to him, then to the direction where she was laid down, and heard the merciful evenly-paced beep of the heart rate monitor.
Relief washed over him. She lived.
He quietly mouthed a thank you to Dr. Greene. When he was left alone yet again, he ruminated at the stormy thoughts that filled his head.
She has suffered enough heartache for a lifetime. And for him to continue to pursue her is to only prolong her trauma and heartache over his actions. For them, there was no recovery.
Today was not a chance to begin again. It was a chance to make it right and finally give up.
It was then that he decided, it was time to let her go.
***
Heather woke up as she was wheeled into the hospital room. The white fluorescent light made her eyes flicker, her vision trying to adjust to the sudden brightness after a long stay in the dark.
A baritone voice boomed into the quiet, jolting her consciousness awake.
"Well, you put up a mighty fight today, Rookie."
Heather couldn't help a snicker, her vision darting around to sought out the speaker.
"I had to, or you'll probably chase me to the afterlife with your scalding commentary, Dr. Ramsey."
She heard him chuckle in response.
"Still snarky, I see," the attending quipped, as he approached the side of her bed and pressed a button on a remote. Slowly, her upper body raised up, as the headboard elevated. She tried to curve her lips into a smile only to feel a tingling pain, making her wince a little.
"Easy there, Dr. Song. You just went to hell and back today." Ethan said, a clipboard tucked between his fingers.
"Funny that you say that," she said. "I still feel like hell though."
Her mentor can only manage a faint smile, an endearing affection coming across his piercing blue eyes. She knew that look. It was the same kind of gaze she saw him give Dolores during her intern year. A subtle look of genuine concern which she attributed to their growing relationship as mentor and protege.
It was just a matter of seconds before that look vanished, replaced by a more formal version.
"It's going to be a couple of days of recovery for you," he explained. "You suffered from severe hyperkalemia, which, with the help of your friend from the DA, we have managed to de-escalate as soon as possible."
Heather couldn't help but blink at what was just mentioned. "I'm sorry, my friend from the DA?"
"Yes, ADA Lahela was able to identify the correct chemical compound within the first half hour after you arrived here," he paused as he checked the flow of her IV. "It aided us to do the proper intervention in the nick of time."
He was right. Anymore than 30 minutes into the system, potassium chloride would have bound to the blood cells and would have caused permanent, if not fatal damage in her system.
She'll have to thank Bryce the first chance she gets. Her memories went back to their last conversation, and she shivered at the unavoidable confrontation that will take place.
Her hands trailed up to her temple, where she felt a bandage. She recalled her fall, thinking it was how she got wounded.
"Ah, yes. We're going to do an MRI for that, just to make sure we're not missing anything else. But apart from that, you'll do alright." He concluded.
"Thanks Dr. Ramsey," her appreciation was sincere.
He nodded. He was about to express something else, when a knock on the door hindered him.
Both of them swiveled at the visitor. Heather swallowed hard as the dark brown eyes looked back at her, the familiar figure standing by the doorway.
"May I come in?" Rafael said with a hint of hesitation as he put a foot forward.
Ethan Ramsey twisted his gaze back to Heather, checking if he would allow the young man in. Although he saw her body tense, she lightly nodded.
"Sure, Agent Aveiro. We're just about finished here." the attending gently patted Heather's hand. "I'll see you in the morning, Rookie."
When Dr. Ramsey departed, Raf made his way towards her, as if in a daze. Heather bit her lower lip and touched the tips of her brunette fringes. The thin tube of the IV tangled in her arm giving her an excuse to avert her eyes away from his for a few seconds.
"Are you doing alright?" Raf asked, taking a seat on the standard-issued metal chair beside her bed.
"Yeah, I'm okay, I've been through worse." she mumbled, almost whispering.
A sharp pang of contrition reverberated within him, unsure of which ordeal she just called as a better alternative than what she just went through. Although his adultery was probably a main contender.
His head bowed low as if navigating through the warring indecision between his heart and mind. While distracted, a soft pitter-patter of rain slid against the glass window. It was as if nature was conspiring against him, yet another heaven-given sign that their end was inevitable.
How can ending a relationship be made easier? There was no path that would prove to be less difficult, except for an admission of the truth. The least hurtful road to traverse is the turn towards an honest confession that what they had has intersected with their own definition of their limits.
Rafael cleared his throat, the noise making Heather face him.
"Heather," he began. "I know I promised to be the person who you can turn to, anytime you needed." His lips quivered, fumbling with the right words to say.
"But I broke that," he simply said, reaching for her hands and lacing it with his. His head dropped so low in between his shoulders that his cheek touched the fabric of her hospital blanket.
Her eyes shone as she slowly took in his words, soaking in the finality of the tone he uttered them with. When she survived her kidnapping tonight, she initially thought she won a battle. But only hours after, they were losing the war.
Rafael's tears soaked through the white sheet, like the rain that drowned the street outside the sullen, sterile hospital room. His muffled groans of defeat echoed through the silence that crawled in between. Although his heart burst in a million shards, deep down he knew it was ultimately for the best.
They couldn't remember how long they stayed still. Eventually, he lifted his head where his gaze fell upon the softness of her features. His thumb gently grazed her cheek, asking for permission.  She nodded, an unspoken agreement similar to what she used to give him before.
In a heartbeat, their lips met, savouring the taste of each other, fully aware that this will be the very last time. The kiss was sweet, but tainted bitter by their unspoken farewell. When they pulled apart, there was no question that it was the end of the road for them.
There was nothing left to say.
But before they separated, a set of amber eyes witnessed the ending of their love affair, misinterpreting it as a last ditch effort to salvage the remnants of their irreparable relationship.
The prosecutor fled from the hospital room without so much as a word, unnerved by the scene that put another blow on his own pursuit of love.

Author's Notes 2: Although Rafael is still my OTP, what he did in the beginning of this series rendered him and Heather permanently broken. Cheating, no matter the justifications, will always be cheating. And dealing with the consequences of it, especially by the offended party, will be a hard mountain to summit. Raf chose to let Heather go, and for me, that proves that he loves Heather enough, so that he could spare her from further emotional trauma. She has more than enough to deal with now.

The Tsunogomi Institute, Scene 1 Being Paired
Elmira stands in front of a mirror. She runs her hand through her long white hair. Her canine ears twitch, and her white bushy tail wags inside her dress. She stares into her own dark blue eyes and then at her smooth pink cheeks. She rubs her soft hairless arms. Well, this is it. When I walk out that door, they will lay the rest of my life out for me. She shakes her head. I’m doing this to keep us all together. It must be like this. She sighs. Why am I nervous?
The door to the bathroom opens, and a short girl with white hair, pig-tails, and sky-blue eyes pops in. “Hey sis, it’s your turn. Everyone’s waiting.” She grabs Elmira’s hand, pulling her along.
“I know Eliza, I just feel weird, that’s all,” She says.
Eliza turns around and smirks. “Really?” She shrugs. “Look, Tsunogami has been matchmaking for decades. They’re dedicated to the mutual happiness of both human and aminoid.” She points at Elmira saying, “And they’re the ones that can back up that promise.”
Elmira pushes her sister’s hand aside, “I get it, you don’t have to give me my pitch.”
Eliza pulls out her phone from a pocket in her dress and shows her a short video. On it is a blue-haired woman in sunglasses holding a folded cane. “… Basically, I’m looking for a best friend that can help me out a little,” the girl says.
Eliza’s tail bats her sister’s leg. “Her name’s Julia. Isn’t she cool?” Elmira smiles slightly, then nods. “They paired Elijah with a super pretty girl who just had the bad luck of getting in a car accident. Even Ellis got a girl who wants to go camping and stuff but can’t drive because her epilepsy came back.”
That’s a relief, Elmira thinks. I would hate to have pushed everyone into taking care of someone only to hate who we paired them with. “Yeah, at least we get to be a family. I hope the humans will like each other.”
Eliza pouts. “Oh, come on. They will. And your guy is gonna be handsome, and tall, and have a nice hard body. You’ll see.”
Elmira laughs. “You’re so childish, you know that?”
“Well, I know for a fact he’s only sixteen.” Eliza licks her teeth after making the comment. “I can’t wait to see him.”
“As long as he’s not a perv, and has a healthy idea of love, I honestly don’t care,” Elmira says walking to the main room.
“And I took that to heart too,” a red-haired woman says. “Your human will turn sixteen in two days, the day he arrives.” This is the minimum age they can match an aminoid with a human by the Tsunogami institute.
“Thank you Annabelle,” Elmira says shaking her hand. “I know I was demanding.” She takes a breath. “When did you match us?”
Annabelle smiles. “Are you kidding? I matched you two first, almost two years ago.” She picks up a remote. “I matched your other siblings around him, so you all could still be close like you wanted.”
Elmira raises her hand. “Can I see as much of his interview as I want?”
Annabelle laughs. “Don’t worry.” She leans toward her. “I’ve seen a lot of guys come through here, but Billy is a rare treasure. I’ve never felt as strong about any match in my career as I do about this one.” She nods. “And yes, I have a few clips from his interview I wanted to show you.”
Annabelle turns on a fifty inch TV screen. On it, a boy rocks back and forth, “I made coffee.” He stops and mouths with his hand in front of his face, “Oh, introduction, yeah.” He nods, “My name’s Billy.” He raises a finger and bounces it up and down, “This is being recorded so I can’t hear you right now.” He stops, makes a fist, puts his hand down and rocks excitedly again, “I made my breakfast this morning.”
Eliza whispers in Elmira’s ear, “Yeah, and most of it is on his shirt.”
Annabelle stops the video and turns to her. “Hey.”
Eliza shrugs, “What, he’s a slob, and fat, and he has thick glasses, and hasn’t shaved in forever.”
Elmira throws her hands up, “Okay, we get it, you don’t like him. But I didn’t ask for a guy that looked great.”
Eliza balks, “Seriously? You’re hot enough to have any guy in the world, why would you settle for him? He’s ugly.”
Annabelle clears her throat, “She wanted a man that would value her, listen to her, and need her help, and not be overtly sexual. Billy is all of those things and then some.”
“Hmm,” Ellis says, tilting his head. He looks toward his sisters, and his hair swings behind him. He shrugs. “I like him. Despite the clear challenges he has, he’s still optimistic.”
“Oh, come on.” Eliza sighs. “He talks weird too.”
Elijah stands, unfolding his arms and putting in his pockets. The six foot four inch tall canoid looms over his little sister, “I would remind you, we signed up to help people who need it.” He steps back. “Not to mention, this is big-sis’ decision, not yours.”
Annabelle put a hand on Eliza. “He’s genuine, kind, and willing to help where he can. I’m surprised how rare that is. I know he may seem eccentric and I know you’re worried. But please trust me, he’ll grow on you.”
Eliza rolls her eyes, “Like a tumor.”
Elmira glares at her sister. “Thank you, Annabelle,” Elmira says looking bat to her. “Billy is cute, but I am a little worried about his maturity.”
Annabelle skips to another part of the video. “What is love to you, Billy?”
Billy points a down on his desk and bounces it up and down slowly while looking downward, “You have to tell the truth.” He also rocks and looks at the screen again. “And you can’t be tricking, it’s not nice. You need to talk about stuff you’re thinking about.” He stops rocking, putting a finger to his mouth. “You can’t be mean either, and you have to believe them.” He raises a finger and bounces his hand up and down, “You have to do stuff together.” He counts on his fingers while bouncing his hand, “You have to say nice things, You have to hold hands and hug a lot, you have to give each other stuff, and you have to do stuff for each other.” He points at the screen and holds it there, “But most important, you can’t give up. Giving up is bad.” He nods and looks from side to side, “Yeah, that’s love, all that’s love.”
Eliza furrows her brow, “What?” She shrugs. “I don’t understand what he said.”
Annabelle sighs and counts on her fingers, “You need honesty, integrity, communication, respect, and trust.” She folds her arms. “Then there’s the five love languages of quality time, auditory, physical touch, gifts, and acts of service. But none of these things matter without perseverance.”
Eliza shakes her head. “Yeah, and he expects her to do all the work.”
Elmira turns to her. “I don’t think so.” She tilts her head. “He's looking and pointing down.” She looks at Annabelle. “Was he reciting things he heard and expecting this of himself?”
Annabelle nods with a smile. “My thoughts exactly.”
Elmira smiles back, “I know I said I didn’t want someone who was…” She stalls.
Annabelle laughs and says, “Don’t worry, he has a drive. Both of his sisters confirmed this for me. He’s just private about it.”
Elmira shrugs. “All right, you win.” She sighs. “Billy will be my owner.”

"It's a spell, Kai." Veronica said as she watched Malakai pace the room. "It is reversible. And thankfully for this one, its an easy fix."
"Can't you just take it away with your special siphoning thing?" Malakai asked a bit irritated about the whole thing.
"I actually already tried doing that." Veronica said shaking her head. "Unfortunately it doesn't change the way she has been thinking the last several months. She thinks he is dead because of her." She sighed as she packed a few things of Elizabeth's into a bag. "Because of that, the magic used isn't just going to be siphoned when I try to."
"Even with the spell, shouldn't she have felt Elijah whenever Hope visited?" Malakai asked as he rubbed the back of his neck.
"Think about it." Veronica said sighing. "She'd randomly go into her silent moods for hours on end. Once those were over she went back to being close to herself as she was."
"Always around the same time Hope would go visit." He said nodding his head. "Can a spell really mess with her feeling anything?"
"Look at what Aya did to her." Veronica said as she closed the bag. "I'm sure even smaller spells have the capability to mask it from her."
"How do we fix it then?" Malakai asked.
"She needs to see Elijah." Veronica said as if it was the easiest thing in the world. "That fixes everything."
"Look kid, you really don't know Liz if you think she will go willingly to Hayley's after that." Malakai said shaking his head. "She'd never agree to it."
Veronica sighed and thought for a moment. "I have an idea. You're just gonna have to call Hayley back."
...
"If it is the spell I think it is, Elijah," Freya said standing as she watched Elijah look out the window. "It's very simple to reverse the effects of it."
"And how can it be undone?" He asked. There was worry in his voice. He knew nothing of what the spell had been capable of. He was stuck here in this spell and there was nothing he could personally do to let her know he was in fact still alive. The past year whenever Hope had visited, he had always felt that Elizabeth was okay that she hadn't been feeling stressed or anything that would have caused him to worry. And yet, he had found out that someone had made her believe she had killed him without feeling a single difference while Hope had been visiting.
"She has to see you." Freya said with a nod. "I'm sure when Hope visits, we can have a plan formed to get Malakai to bring Elizabeth over for a visit."
"If she believes that I am dead, she isn't going to come here." Elijah said sighing. "She's going to avoid this place."
"How sure are you of that?" Rebekah asked as she watched as her brother worried.
Elijah's eyes never left the window. "I know her, Rebekah." He said shaking his head slightly. "She's going to avoid everything that even remotely reminds her of me."
"That can't be true." Freya said shaking her head.
"She did it with her daughter." Elijah said finally looking at his sisters. "Since her daughter's death, she hasn't taken a single step into the modern version that village we left her in. That diner that I had met you at," He looked at Rebekah. "She hasn't even gone in a hundred mile radius from it since I killed her human companion. If it hadn't been for the events that occurred after Davina's death, she would have left New Orleans and never stepped back into its boundaries. This will be difficult for her."
"We'll make it work." Freya said trying to reassure her brother.
...
"Where are we going?" Elizabeth asked as Malakai was practically dragging her out of the compound.
"Getting you out of town." He said tossing her the bag Veronica packed for her. Elizabeth's eyebrow raised as she crossed her arms. "I know you Liz. This isn't where you want to be. In fact I know you want to at least be out of this state or even out of the country for a while." The moment the words were out of his mouth, he seen some relief in Elizabeth.
"Then where to?" Elizabeth asked with a small smile on her face. She really did want to be as far away from here as humanly possible, even if she wasn't a human.
"As far away from New Orleans as possible." Malakai said with the most genuine smile he could manage. "Maybe to China? We haven't been there together." He knew this was either going to end badly or everything would somehow be alright in the end.
It wasn't long after that Malakai started driving that Elizabeth fell asleep. She was now in a deep sleep at that thanks to Veronica's help. He knew there was no easy way of getting Elizabeth to Hayley's with out knocking her out in some way. It didn't take long to get to Hayley's and even though Veronica had reassured him that the potion Elizabeth drank was twice as much as what she would give a regular vampire, he was actually afraid that Elizabeth would wake up any moment and possibly kill him for knocking her out and bringing her to the one of the places she wanted to avoid.
"Kai." Hayley said as she met him at the car.
"She's knocked out for now." He started to say right away. "I need to get her down to the room real quick." He said as he walked around the car and pulled Elizabeth out, caring her to towards the house.
"Mind telling me what is actually going on?" Hayley asked as she followed Malakai.
"I'll explain everything in a moment, but I have to get her settled first." Without another word from Hayley, he headed straight for the room down the hall. When he got there, he had been surprised that Hayley had actually followed his instructions when he had called earlier. Elijah's coffin was placed down on floor with a small mattress next to it. Hope had already kneeling down beside Elijah and from what he could tell, she was still in the dream world giving out the rest of the details to the others. He laid Elizabeth down on the mattress and went over to Hope's side. He placed his hand on her shoulder before shaking her slightly. "Alright kiddo, we're here."
A few seconds later, Hope opened her eyes and looked at Malakai. "They will be waiting for her."
"Good." He said ruffling her hair. "Now you are going to have to help her get in there okay?"
Hope nodded as she went to stand in between Elijah and Elizabeth. She took a hold of Elizabeth's hand and looked over at Malakai. "Does she know where she will be?" She asked.
Malakai sighed and shook his head. "I had to play an evil trick on her just to get here." He said as he went to stand next to her. "Tell your uncle that if he decides to go inside her head, what he sees, its not going to be pretty, okay?"
"Okay." Hope said with a slight nod. "Aunt Freya said this will work." Hope wasn't sure if she was saying it to herself or to him.
"I know." Malakai said with a smile. "I got a witch friend that says the exact same thing." That had made Hope's smile grow. Malakai watched as she sat down between them and grabbed Elijah's hand.
"We'll fix it." She said with a smile before she closed her eyes.
Malakai sighed a moment later. He knew that they would be able to undo this. They had come so far for this all to be wasted.
"Now that they are gone," Hayley said as she walked down the stairs. "mind telling me what this is all about and why you had my daughter playing messenger?"
"She'll be fine, Elijah." Rebekah tried reassuring him as they stood in his room while they watched as Elizabeth slept.
Elijah and Freya had expected Elizabeth to be awake once she had entered the dream world. They had expected her to be skeptical as to where she was or angry for Malakai bringing her there. But instead she had been asleep when she entered the dream world. While it worried Elijah, he knew it had to be done just to get her here. He just didn't know how long she would be able to sleep for. He was also worried that if Hope left, that Elizabeth would go with her. But for now, all he could do was wait and hope that she would wake up sooner rather than later.
"I feel tempted to enter her mind. " He said keeping his eyes on Elizabeth's sleeping form. She seemed to be sleeping peacefully so far. He wasn't sure if it was the potion Malakai had given her or if it was just that, peaceful sleep. "Just to see what happened to her out there. To see how this fear played out for her. "
Rebekah placed her hand on Elijah's shoulder. "Is that something you actually wish to see?" She asked. "If what Malakai said is true, it wont be pleasant. If she believes you are dead, do you really wish to see how she believes you died played out?" Rebekah knew that while her own curiosity wanted to know what it was that Elizabeth believed, this was about her brother.
"We have witnessed many things in our lifetime, Rebekah." He said looking over at her. "What ever is in her mind cannot be worse than what we have seen already." Elijah had some ideas as to the possibilities that could have manifested in Elizabeth's head. The main thing that played through his head was Elizabeth possibly watching as someone took his life. But he would never know unless he actually looked into her mind.
"It's your choice, Elijah." She said as she patted his shoulder before leaving him to be alone with Elizabeth.
It took Elijah several minutes after Rebekah left to decide that he would indeed enter her mind. He wasn't exactly sure what would be waiting for him when he did and that made him hesitant. But while he was hesitant, he knew that this needed to be done. He needed to know what she had gone through this last year to have gotten to this point. He needed to know if she had felt any kind of pain. And while she was here in the dream world, he could only feel that she was sleeping now. He couldn't feel the things that she had felt in the past year. And that alone was enough to make him want to see what her mind would allow him to see. He knew that in the end, seeing it all would make things easier for when Elizabeth woke up. Sitting down next to her on the bed, he reached his hand out to hers. He was easily pulled into her mind and what he had seen next, he wasn't prepared for it at all as he thought he would be.
She was running past trees and quickly. He wasn't sure at first if this was what she was currently dreaming about or if it was a memory. He realized moments later that it was a memory when he seen Malakai and Veronica running with her. Elizabeth looked behind them every now and then before stopping. For a moment, Elijah could see the worried look on her face.
"Get as far and as fast as you can. Get somewhere safe." Elizabeth said looking at Malakai and Veronica. "I'll be right behind you." But the look in her eyes, Elijah knew she had been lying. Elizabeth had watched as they nodded and took off again. Elizabeth waited for a moment before she began running again. But it had been in a different direction than what Malakai and Veronica had taken.
While she was running this time, there was not a single sign of fear in her eyes. It was as if she knew there was a reason she had been running in that particular direction. It wasn't until she stopped running and cried out in pain that Elijah had seen any kind of fear in her. Her hands moved up to her head as if holding it would stop the pain she was feeling. It was a witch's doing, that was obvious. But this witch Elijah had never encountered before and he had his fair share of run ins with them. He watched as Elizabeth looked up at the witch.
"I only did it to save my family." She struggled to say.
The witch chuckled and tsked as she walked over to Elizabeth making sure to keep the spell going just in case Elizabeth had any other ideas. "As much as I want to believe you Elizabeth, some things cannot be undone."
"I didn't kill him." She said shaking her head before crying out from the witch increasing the intensity of the spell.
"No, but you deciding to steal his venom was not okay." The witch leaned down and eased slightly on the spell. "I think its only fair to take some of yours in return."
"What?" Elizabeth asked confused. She wondered why this witch would even want anything to do with her venom. She was trying to focus on what she was saying but at the same time she was trying to endure the pain from the spell. "You have the vial back. What do you want with mine?"
"The pack is like family to me, Elizabeth." The witch said shaking her head as she watched Elizabeth. "You are the only one that can possibly take their will away, I think you deserve to have a bit of yours taken away."
"What are yo-" Before Elizabeth could finish asking what she was talking about, the witch had entered Elizabeth's mind. And from what Elijah could see, it was painful for Elizabeth. Elizabeth had tried moving away from the witch but with whatever spell the witch was using on her, she couldn't move. After what felt like forever to Elizabeth, the witch pulled herself out of her head and for a moment ceased all magic on her.
Elizabeth was panting heavily. As much as Elijah wanted to kill this witch, he knew that this wasn't real. She wouldn't die here as he wished she would. All he could do was allow the memory to play out even though he hated every second of it so far.
"Oh I think I have a better idea after seeing that." The witch chuckled.
"What did you see?" Elizabeth asked. "I have a right to know since it was my head you were just in." Elizabeth was worried about what the witch had seen while she had rummaged in her head. Her mind held secrets that only her and a few others were allowed to know. If she had found it, the others would be in trouble.
The witch smirked. "You'll see soon." She said as she began reciting a spell that the woman had obviously had used several times by the look on her face.
Elizabeth had got up and was going to make a run for it. She figured that if she get as far away as possible that the spell wouldn't work. Elizabeth had only gotten a few yards away before her eye sight had become blurry and she fell over, passing out. Elijah felt helpless. He was just in her memories watching. He couldn't do anything to help.
When Elizabeth woke up in the memory, she looked different. There was something completely off about her. It was then Elijah saw exactly what the witch had done. The memory of her being in the woods had changed to Elizabeth standing in the middle of the compound. She had this look of hunger on her face as blood covered her lips, down to her chin. Even though they were covered in blood, her lips held a devilish grin. Elijah had only seen it once and that was when her humanity had been off.
Elizabeth took a few steps forward as a chuckle passed her lips. Every step she had taken, it was as if she was closing in on her prey that she had just cornered. A gasp left Elijah's lips when the memory showed who Elizabeth had been walking towards. He watched as his own self stood there, bloody and beaten while she looked as if she hadn't been so much as scratched.
"Turn it back on, Elizabeth." Elijah had heard himself beg as he held up a hand to Elizabeth which she smacked aside as she took a few steps closer to him before lifting him by the neck. Seeing him struggle had brought a smirk to her face.
"Oh my sweet Elijah." Her words sounded darker than he had ever heard them before. It had caused a chill to run through him."There is no 'on' switch anymore. Its just darkness and no Humanity. I kind of like it this way. "
It was then that Elijah realized that he still had the same bite mark on his arm. When he looked around the compound, there laid several bodies. The scene had been coming more clear now. This was the night that he had been bitten and placed into this spell. As his eyes scanned the room, he found his brothers's bodies bloodied and lifeless along with every other vampire that had been there that night. He had been the last one alive.
"You know it will hurt you to do this." He heard himself struggling to convince Elizabeth to stop her from doing something she would regret, but she just chuckled.
"No." She said shaking her head as she placed him back on his feet, leaving her hand on the side of his neck."It will hurt you. I can't feel a thing." She looked at him as her smirk grew more devilish than he had ever seen it do. "Good bye, Elijah."As if it was nothing, Elizabeth had ripped Elijah's head right off.
Startled, Elijah had pulled himself out of Elizabeth's head. He ran a hand through his hair as he looked down at Elizabeth who was still seemed to be sleeping peacefully.
"Malakai said it wouldn't be pretty." Hope said standing by the door. While Hope didn't know what it was that Elijah had just seen, she saw how startled he was when he had pulled his hand away from Elizabeth.
"He was right." Elijah said nodding slightly trying not to show that he was now even more worried. "Shouldn't you be down with Rebekah?"
"I wanted to see if Aunt Liz was awake yet." Hope said never moving from her spot. She had waited a long year to see Elizabeth and she was hoping that she would wake up a lot sooner than this. Hope thought everything would have been fixed by now.
"She isn't yet."Elijah looked over at Hope. "I'm sure you'll know when she is." He gave her a smile and a tilt of his head to tell her to head back down. Hope smiled and nodded before heading back downstairs.
Sighing, Elijah looked back at Elizabeth. Leaning towards her slightly, he moved a few strands of hair that were in her face. "Wake up, Elizabeth." He said softly. "Wake up and see that this was all just a spell and that I am right here."
Another hour passed and Elijah had never left the room. He paced it from time to time when nothing else would keep him occupied. There had been times where he would reenter Elizabeth's mind to find himself back in the compound with the fake memory replaying. This was the torment that the spell was giving her. She was reliving his death over and over. It was how her mind was telling her he was dead. And if that had been any indication for what would actually happen if one of them were to die, Elijah was going to do everything he could to make sure that they would both be safe and never have to deal with this.
Hearing her stir, he stayed in his spot. Even though he wanted to rush to her side and make her see that he was still there, he needed her to see that she was safe here first.
"I'm going to kill him." Was the first words out of her mouth once her eyes had opened and it had caused his eyebrow to raise. "Kai!" She yelled as she slowly sat up rubbing her head. "That bastard telling me we were leaving and now I'm-" Her eyes landed on Elijah sitting in the corner watching her. "here." She finished as she stared at him.
"Elizabeth." He said as he slowly took a step closer to her. He watched as she shook her head.
"No." She said softly as she shook her head again. "I-I killed you." She quickly had gotten out of the bed and backed herself into a corner shaking her head more. If this had been some trick her mind was playing on her, she wanted it to stop.
"You didn't." Elijah said trying to calm her down.
Elizabeth shook her head again. There were tears forming in her eyes as she stopped and looked at him. "This isn't real. This has to be some kind of dream. I killed you years ago."
It hurt Elijah to know Elizabeth had believed that. The spell had been so embedded into her mind that she had believed he had been killed for a little over four years now. It made him wonder what had happened to the memories she had of her time here in the dream world. He had no clue what had been altered by the spell.
"You didn't Liz." He said walking over to her. "This is as real as it can be with me here in this spell."
Elizabeth still didn't believe it. Her mind was telling her that this was in fact all a dream. The spell was telling her that this wasn't real. It was telling her that none of this was happening and that she had taken his life back in that compound. Even the emotions that she was feeling from Elijah, the spell told her they weren't real, it was all just a trick. "All the blood..." She shook her head again as the spell's memory began to push its way into her head once more.
"That isn't how it happened, Liz." Elijah said as he placed his hand on her cheek. "You helped keep us alive."
"How?" She asked as her eyes scanned his face. She could feel his hand on her cheek and see that he was standing there in front of him, but her mind was telling her this wasn't real.
"Please allow me to show you." He said hoping that she would allow him to show her the memories of the last four years that would prove to her that everything the spell had been telling her was wrong.
Elizabeth almost took a step back and told him no, but if everything that she believed was real, why not indulge in this dream she must be having just to see what life would have been like if everything had been different. She nodded slightly and watched as he gave a small smile before showing her everything he could to prove to her that he was there in front of her.
He showed her the moment she had bit him and the moments after that Rebekah had given them a chance to get away. He showed her the memory of her walking into Lucien's apartment with the idea that could save them. How through Elijah's eyes she had looked so broken from the damage she caused. He showed her their last conversation they had while he had been awake. The fear that they both felt if this hadn't worked and even their brief conversation about Whitmore. The next memory that played had been when they first seen each other in this dream world. She had been holding Hope's hand and through Elijah, he couldn't believe that she was standing there in front of him. He showed her a few other visits they had before showing her the last time he had seen her before she had left for her trip.
"Hopefully it wont take too long." Elizabeth said as she sighed softly.
"It is only a year, Elizabeth." Elijah said chuckling. "I won't be going anywhere."
Elizabeth smiled and shook her head. "This will work out just fine." Trying to convince herself more than him. "I'll come back and Freya will be able to create the cure. A year away and then you'll be awake."
Elijah ran his hand through her hair, but didn't say anything. He knew that there was a possibility that she may not come back with the cure. As much as he believed in her, he didn't want to get his hopes up. "Come back as soon as you can."
"Of course." She said before leaning up and kissing him.
Elizabeth moved out of Elijah's reach. At first he had believed that she had wished to see no more only because she didn't believe anything that he had showed her. But the look in her eyes had said something different. She looked panicked as she looked around the room before grabbing a hold of her head as if she was in pain before crying out and slid down until she was on the floor. Elijah moved forward to help her in anyway he could. He knelt down beside her and wrapped his arms around her. Just by holding her, Elizabeth had opened her mind to him and he had been able to see what was going on in that head of hers.
He could easily see her own memories playing through her head before hearing the spell play through her mind. It had been loud and clear as if the witch had been in Elizabeth's head reciting it. A gasp left Elizabeth's lips as everything that happened the last few months since the spell had been intact played in her mind. The denial, the impulsive killing, the need to forget whatever reason it was they had left New Orleans for in the first place.
"Uncle Elijah," Elijah looked up to see Hope standing in the door way. "is she okay?" Elizabeth's head shot up and when it did, both Elijah and Hope caught sight of Elizabeth's red eyes.
"Go back downstairs, Hope." Elijah said tightening his hold on Elizabeth just in case she wasn't in control of herself. He watched as Hope left his view and ran back downstairs.
As Elijah looked back at Elizabeth he seen that she was still looking at where Hope had just been. In her head memories were playing of her and Hope. The first time she had come to visit them and seeing the little girl before her to the memories of them walking through the field in the dream world, her birthday and to the last memory of them before Elizabeth had left.
"You'll keep them company right?" Elizabeth asked.
"Yes!" Hope had said with much excitement. It had caused Elizabeth's smile to widen.
"I'll see you soon, kid." Elizabeth said as she pulled Hope into a hug. Hope had hugged back tightly.
"You wont be too long right?" Hope asked.
"Only a year. By then I hope Freya teaches you a lot so you can show me when I get back." She said letting Hope go and smiling at her.
"When you get back, will it mean we can wake them?" Hope asked and it caused Elizabeth's smile to fade a bit.
"Hopefully."
"I thought I killed you." It had been a whisper, but it had sounded loud in Elijah's ears. Looking down at Elizabeth, she had been looking up at him. Her eyes held her normal hazel color that Elijah had grown so use to seeing.
"Not by your own doing." He said trying to reassure her that everything was in fact okay. That none of this had been her fault. "It was the witch's fault."
She shook her head quickly. "I should have known you were alive." She said trying to clear her head. "I should have known something wasn't right. I was killing innocent people, Elijah."
Fresh tears had formed in her eyes as the memories had played through her mind. She had been feeding carelessly on the innocent and left a trail everywhere she had gone, leaving Malakai and Veronica to clean up after her. To Elizabeth, she should have known that something was completely wrong with her if she was killing like that out of no where. It wasn't like she had gave in to the blood lust and fell off the wagon. She also should have been able to feel that Elijah was still alive and she should have been able to feel him whenever Hope had visited him.
Elijah ran his hand through her hair. "It wasn't your fault." He said hoping that would help ease her in some way.
From her memories he knew the witch had said she would take some of her will away from her. The witch's spell had seemed to do just that while feeding Elizabeth's darkest fear. Her fear that she would be the one to kill him because of the serum running through her veins at the moment. While part of Elijah had hoped the fear had been something else entirely, he couldn't blame her. He was sure he would feel the same way.
Elizabeth leaned into his touch as she took a deep breath. The familiar and comforting touch had made her relax more as the seconds passed. The familiar feeling of his emotions had added a extra comfort. He was as calm as he could be in the chaotic mess that was made up of her emotions. For every second she stayed with in his arms, the more the calmness came over her. The fear of the spell slowly fading. The hatred she had for herself on how she killed carelessly. Even the guilt that she should have known something was wrong had seemed to fade.
She placed her hand on his cheek as she took in every feature of his face, almost as if she was memorizing every detail she could. From the way his brown eyes no longer held worry but love and care that she hadn't seen in them in the time she had been gone, to the way the slight stubble had covered his his jaw. All things she had believed she'd never see again all because of a stupid spell. No matter how many times she told herself that he was right there in front of her, it never stopped her from feeling like it had been the first time she had seen him in several years. Even with only being away for a year, it had still felt like longer.
Their eyes met for just a moment before their lips crashed together. Through the bond they both felt the mixture of relief, the need to protect the other, and the want to never let the other out of their sight. Whatever words that had been left unsaid had been conveyed with the kiss. Even as they got themselves up off the floor, their lips never left the others.
Elijah's hand ran down Elizabeth's back until they reached her thighs, lifting her up before pushing her up against the wall that had been behind her. As his lips traveled down her neck, Elizabeth tilted her head back as her hands moved up his chest before ripping the buttons off of his button up shirt as she pulled at the material. Elijah looked up at her, earning a smirk from her before she kissed him.
It wasn't like he could complain about the shirt. The exact same shirt had been hanging up in the closet of their shared room back in New Orleans. Even the clothes that were currently being pulled and ripped off of Elizabeth's body wouldn't be missed seeing as when she left the spell, they'd still be intact.
As they made their way towards the bed, the sound of the front door being slammed shut had barely registered to their ears. In that moment they were consumed in each other, lost in their own little world and it would be that way for the rest of the night.
