❛ 𝒊'𝒎 𝒔𝒕𝒖𝒄𝒌 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒆. ❜ ⁝ ⸻ HAZBIN VERSE.
INTRODUCTION: Peter Graham doesn't want to live at the mercy of a demon. In a final desperate bid to sever the link made between him and King Paimon, he makes an attempt on his own life. Once the King becomes aware of what he has done ( swallowed medication in severe excess ), he seizes control of the body and forces him to empty his stomach. Thanks to his prompt action, Peter survives— which marks the start of Paimon's retaliation.
Feeling unable to trust his host, the King drags Peter— a mortal, still human vessel— down to Hell in an effort to 'store' him. Though he considers taking him to his castle and keeping him under lock and key, he ultimately decides on the Hazbin Hotel; he trusts that Lucifer's spawn is more than strong enough to deal with Peter should he attempt something so foolish again. After striking a deal with the princess, Paimon returns to the surface to continue his work with his newly gained following, steering them toward the path of sin.
ARC 1: Deeply terrified of the plane he's found himself in, Peter's behaviours become largely reclusive. His life has just been split apart down the middle, ruined entirely, by a demon ( or so he thinks, not yet privy to the truth of Paimon's arrangement with his grandmother )— to now be living amongst them is a horror he is not prepared for.
Arc 1 is largely character-driven and focused on Peter making unlikely friends with the residents of the hotel. Eventually, he goes from terrified of demonkind to happily— if not cautiously— living among them, integrating more and more often with the support of his newfound friend group. Peter's role in the hotel, given his human status, is very menial; he helps out with general household tasks, keen to give back to the people he loves. Though Charlie treats him with an air of responsibility due to Paimon 'assigning' Peter to her, the pair do actually become friends, largely thanks to the Princess' bubbly personality. In particular, Peter grows close with Vaggie, Niffty and Husk. He also befriends the likes of Rosie and, hilariously enough, Lucifer himself. In certain sub-verses with roleplay partners, he is also close to Angel, though this is not necessarily canon to the overall verse at the moment.
The day of the extermination arrives and Peter, far too vulnerable to go head to head with angels given the fact that he's merely human, is hidden in the hotel. While he insists he can do something, that he wants to be of use in some capacity, the group warn him against it, and Peter begrudgingly accepts it. Unfortunately, when Adam shoots his holy light clean through the hotel and destroys it, Peter is killed in the wreckage. His body is never recovered; something that haunts Charlie deeply. Paimon is outraged by her 'failure', though Lucifer forces him to stand down.
NOTE: Peter is not some 'special' case / 'chosen one' when it comes to entering Hell as a human. The only reason he is able to go there and then survive in his alive state is because of Paimon's power and his soul being essentially 'threaded' with the Sin's. The hotel also provides him with a safe place to stay..
ARC 2 . Given that Peter didn't die to enter Hell, his death at the hands of Adam doesn't render him 'double-dead'. This sees him 'reincarnating' as a sinner ( there's a whole individual section below detailing his new appearance ). and being spat out on Paimon's doorstep. Sadly, the only reason he becomes a sinner is because he is spiritually connected to a King of Hell; Peter is not a particularly bad person, nor did he do anything truly deserving of eternal damnation. However, his body being a vessel for King Paimon in life translates to Paimon owning his soul down in Hell. Peter is officially on the King's leash.
In a surprising twist of fate, Paimon reveals that he knows not what to do with him. Peter was useful to him in life as he could hijack his body and disguise himself in the human world ( as well as own a human soul ), but in Hell, where there's no need to hide his demonic appearance, his utility is minimal. Though Paimon entertains the idea of simply killing him, he instead decides that Peter is to become his protégé. He vows to educate him in the 'awakening' of his powers and to teach him magic beyond his wildest fantasies. When Peter questions what this 'awakening' entails, Paimon dodges the question and instead declares from that day forward, Peter is no more; now he is Rook, and he will learn to do the King's bidding in his stead.
Several months go by before Peter Rook is allowed to visit the hotel. Though he looks very different as a sinner, Charlie recognises him instantly; she'd never forget the eyes of the man she couldn't save. He's reintroduced to the group, and though he doesn't move back in now that he lives beside Paimon, he visits the grounds frequently and is gleefully welcomed back as a supporter of the hotel. Motivated by his own unjust ruling, Rook vows to continue helping Charlie rehabilitate as many sinners as possible.
Arc 2 is infinitely more plot-driven and focuses on the truth surrounding his 'contract' with Paimon and why it exists in the first place. Other prominent themes include the exploration of his growing powers and what it means for him to be cosmically linked to a King of Hell, (re)self discovery, how anger can change a person and the effects of spite.
APPEARANCE AS A SINNER: Rook's form mirrors Paimon's in that it's clearly birdlike/he gains bird features. His sclerae become a golden-yellow colour, his pupils stark black. His raven hair becomes infused with naturally sprouting feathers, and his torso becomes covered with them ( they're particularly thick around his neck, the equivalent of a wild bird's fluffy chest, and are black in colour; a few of them having white specks on them ). This plumage tapers off naturally around the navel and the wrists. The most notable gains are a pair of wings and a tail. The tail is long and thin like a stereotypical imp's tail, before it fans out at the end with large, elegant tail-feathers. When opened, his inner wings have feather patterns that look very much like a pair of eyes staring out. His hands and feet go black to match his the tapering of his torso feathers. Rook maintains his previous height and weight.
