Torchwood: Among Us Part 3, VORTEX June 2023

APOCALYPSE NOW

To British television viewers, Janet Ellis is a familiar and beloved face. Best known as a presenter on Blue Peter and also as the mum of pop star Sophie Ellis-Bextor, it shouldn’t be forgotten she was once a guest star in Doctor Who when she played Teka in The Horns of Nimon. And now, she’s coming face to face with the Torchwood team playing a character named Janet!

Torchwood: Among Us 3 features a quartet of adventures with How I Conquered the World, written by Ash Darby, Tim Foley and James Goss; Doomscroll by Ash Darby; Heistland by Tim Foley and The Apocalypse Starts at 6pm by James Goss.

The team, with Yvonne Hartman (Tracy-Ann Oberman), Ng (Alexandria Riley), Orr (Samantha Béart), Mr Colchester (Paul Clayton) and Tyler Steele (Jonny Green) are surviving against the odds as it seems that the whole world has been turned against the organisation. But who is behind this? It’s time to find out.

How I Conquered the World has been co-written by the three writers of this set. Writer James, also the producer of the series, explains: “Episode nine is where we find out what set Torchwood up and why it did it. It ties into all of the stories so far in the season. Who turned a cul-de-sac into killers, who was persecuting Colin, who was behind Voloshnik and what Bilis was doing in the Torchwood Hub? It’s also a story about our lives now, and how, if we really are angrier all the time, where does all that anger go? It’s an interesting piece of storytelling and features some use of artificial voices, which is curiously rewarding and sometimes hilarious.”

Co-author Tim was delighted to work on a collaboration for the first story in this set. He says: “Oh, it was wonderful. Writing Torchwood is always a team sport. It’s great building a series like this together – I’ve had such a good time with James and Ash.”

The second adventure, Doomscroll by Ash, features a very recognisable world with social media influencers. James explains: “Episode 10 might be the one where Twitter goes, ‘I cringed so hard at this’! Something’s killing influencers and Torchwood have to stop it. It’s got a lot of very dark humour in it and truly disturbing situations. The cast are all phenomenal, delivering some lines that are probably unsayably weird. It might be the most relevant thing we’ve ever done, or it might be way off beam, or it might be the kind of thing you listen to in 2027 and go, ‘What’s an influencer?’”

The next story Heistland has been written by Tim. James says: “Episode 11 sees Torchwood Cardiff and their Icelandic equivalent carrying out two heists. Yvonne Hartman sets out to steal a crypto currency before an auction that could end the world. When it was scripted we were still getting our head around NFTs. Now it’s coming out after the bankruptcy of Sam BankmanFried and seems strangely wise. A lot of it is set in the French city of Carcassonne, which is beautiful and very dear to Tim’s heart. Clearly he thought, ‘Where’s the least likely place to base a crypto currency?’. It’s joyous to get Kai Owen back, and Rhys and the mysterious Kristin’s dynamic make me long for more Torchwood Iceland.”

Tim was delighted to be able to send Torchwood to Iceland. He agrees: “Absolutely! After we went there for Misty Eyes, James was keen we returned. It was fun to send Yvonne to France as well – gives a real international flavour to what we expect from ‘heist’ stories.” But has Tim actually ever visited Iceland? He concedes: “No! I’m a fraud! I do have friends from there though. I’d love to visit. And it was fun learning facts about the country. No trains in Iceland! Outrageous.”

Summing up the story, Tim says: “Yvonne performs a heist and Rhys tries to stop her! Or is it the other way around? I love writing for Rhys. Whether he’s barbecuing or making delicious sandwiches, I always seem to be feeding him. And giving him nice warm jumpers. That’s all I want to do for characters I love. And there’s something that happens in a turret that’ll get the listeners talking.”

The Apocalypse Starts at 6pm concludes the series and features the aforementioned Janet Ellis. James says: “Episode 12 was the most glorious, starstruck day in studio since we got Sir Michael Palin in! We had Janet Ellis, MBE, playing a national treasure called Janet. It’s essentially, ‘What if you found out the world was going to end during The One Show? How would they cover it?’ And the answer is this episode. It features riots, kidnapping, aliens and reasonable Christmas gifting tips. The regulars are all wondrous throughout, playing very different aspects of their characters, and, madly, Janet walks away with it.

“We were worried she’d push back on some of the lines, but she really went for it. If you’ve ever wanted to hear a Blue Peter presenter swear, then you’re in for a treat! Janet agreed to it because, of all wonders, she worked with Paul Clayton back in the day and he took her out to lunch and talked her into it. We don’t deserve that man.”

why i like them

Jack is a spectacular example of a character who obfuscates by telling the truth, and it is FASCINATING. He's a great storyteller and an absolutely shit liar. You can always tell when he's hiding something because either he 1. gets incredibly over-the-top charming (if it's a con) or 2. just clams up about it (if it's personal), but usually you DON'T notice because he's distracted you with all his charm and blather. He tells the most obscene and ridiculous stories that are 100% true because he knows no one will actually believe them. And, yeah, he's has never heard of "shame" in a sexual context and doesn't see why he should bother with it, which is just so freaking liberating. Jack is the last person who will ever, ever judge who you are or what you're into, he will fly that freak flag high with PRIDE. And he's genuinely got the biggest heart, I think he really does fall at least a little bit in love with just about everyone.

why i don’t

The amount of manpain that Torchwood shackled him with did make him a bit grating at times, and tried to shoehorn him into the "brooding antihero" archetype in a way that didn't really suit the character. (HATE all the tragic backstory bullshit with his brother, so so so much.) And, okay, John Barrowman is entertaining as hell, but he's...not that great of an actor, and when the story tried to take Jack to deeper places, it often fell flat due to Barrowman's performance. (Sorry.)

KISS KISS BANG BANG MY BELOVED. There is nothing I don't love about that episode, but Jack shone in it. The resolution of a lot of his Doctor-related angst immediately lightened his character back up again, and he also got to play charmingly wrong-footed and vulnerable when it came to winning his team back, especially Ianto.

Doctor Who reboot series 1, no I will not be accepting criticism at this time. It's where the character was introduced and what made us all fall in love with him so hard they had to write him a spinoff.

We never actually got any of his backstory with the Time Agency or why they wiped two years of his memory. I do believe it's because he realized the Agency itself was immoral and covering up something awful, and that he was wiped for trying to get the truth out. Jack may need some guidance finding his moral compass sometimes, but he does have a strong sense of right and wrong and which side of that he falls on, and I think the Agency absolutely hung him out to dry.

...he's much more interesting as a secondary character than primary, and Torchwood works best when it's about the ensemble than about Jack himself.

I was tagged by @themarshalstale which, thank you so much! I feel like I always get missed on these (I know why, it’s been 84 years since I published anything but still). 1. How many works do you have on ao3?

46 it seems. Which...look I’m slow man so that’s not surprising. lol Also crippling depression does not make for much production, at least for me.

2. What’s your current AO3 wordcount?

309662 according to the stats.

3. How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?

So do I could only AO3 or in like life? lol I suppose it should only be on AO3 since this is an AO3 ask game. Hrm. Basically AO3 can be summed up as: Marvel (in several iterations - all Avengers related) Torchwood Highlander But isn’t it more fun to consider my entire fandom life, which, I’m sorry, I’m old so...yeah. Not all of this is was published and beyond that a lot is not available anymore...which is likely for the best. Highlander Star Wars Babylon 5 Ronin Warriors/Samurai Troopers Marvel (again, several iterations also of note Avengers and X-Men both count) Torchwood Star Trek LOTR Stargate (SG-1, SGA) Mortal Kombat I dabbled with the idea of Potter fic but never got past the ideas stage.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

1: You rearrange me till I’m sane Clint finds himself spiraling into a deep depression after the Battle of New York...until the Winter Soldier ends up saving him and inadvertently giving him a new purpose – to save the man that the Soldier had once been – Bucky Barnes. Not one to be outdone, the Soldier decides that his new mission is to ensure that Clint remains alive himself. Protecting a blonde man with a self-destructive streak is somehow very familiar to him. Through the back and forth of who is saving whom they cross the country and learn more about themselves and each other – and perhaps find a reason for living. 2: Five Dates Bucky Didn’t Realize He Was on And the One He Planned Himself To say that Bucky was surprised when Clint kissed him was an understatement. But it was nothing compared to the shock he felt when he learned they'd been dating for months without him realizing it.Clint gets whisked away for a mission before they have time to talk and Bucky is left to figure things out on his own - hindsight being 20/20 he can't help but wonder how he missed things the first go around.

3: Puck Luck Bucky Barnes is used to the ups and downs of an NHL season. He's used to the unpredictability of the game, knows that bounces don't always go your way, but that doesn't make a broken hand in the final third of the season any easier to deal with. Especially not when he ends up with an impromptu roommate/personal assistant in the form of one Clint Barton - his agent, Natalia Romanova's (rather attractive) friend he hadn't known existed before his injury.

It's just for six to eight weeks - what could possibly happen in that span of time?

4: Loose Lips Launch Ships

Based on the following prompt: “We go to school together and I think you’re cute and apparently you’re also the pizza delivery guy and my little sibling opened the door screaming hey sibling! you know that kid you’re in love with? you really weren’t kidding when you said his jawline could cut steel holy shit-” Bucky is the pizza delivery guy. Clint's younger (foster) brother has a big mouth.

5: Indelible Bucky Barnes has a pretty decent life – a good job, good friends, a cat that adores him - but something is missing. He’s always found body art to be beautiful and inspiring, and on a whim (and with the hope that maybe he can find what he’s missing) he decides to take the plunge and get a tattoo. That's how he meets Clint Barton. Clint's talented and compassionate and there is an instant spark between the two of them. It's not long before Bucky finds himself wondering and wanting more from the relationship despite the ghosts of the past that crop back up. Because Clint makes him feel normal in a way he truly hasn't for years...

(this was pre-Alpine so I was totally chuffed when canon confirmed Bucky’s status as a crazy cat lady (affectionate).

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not.

I really really really want to do it but I often times don’t end up doing it. There are a few reasons. First, I am akwward AF and bad at interaction adn I feel like just saying thank you would be...not enough? Second - I often times tend to like...turtle (aka retreat into myself) when life gets Too Hard/Busy which happens a lot to me (sigh) and then I miss the vague window in my mind in which it would be okay to respond and then it’s even more weird. I do love and cherish all of them. Like there was one months ago that made me go “hmm...I didn’t think I was going to do a sequel to that fic (You rearrange me till I’m sane), timestamp glimpses sure but a sequel hadn’t come to mind” but then the comment made me think! So...who knows? lol Anyway, I literally have been rereading some in an effort to try and get myself going again. Know that if you have commented, I love you.

6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

At the moment? Probably: Look at you look at me Bucky's in love with Clint - problem is he's really not supposed to be. For Winterhawk Week 2019 - Forbidden Love (I really don’t want to give away the spin in the fic but...if you’re familiar with the Secret Avengers Vol 2 run circa 2013ish (aka when SHIELD initially ‘took control of the team’) that’s a bit of a hint as to the spin). Were it done, Torch Song would be up there. ;) Torch Song Clint is sent back in time, via an alien device, to 1938. While he tries to figure out how to get back home, he takes up singing and entertaining to make ends meet and does his best to not disrupt the timeline.Then he meets a 21 year old Bucky Barnes. --- A torch song is a sentimental love song, typically one in which the singer laments an unrequited or lost love, either where one party is oblivious to the existence of the other, where one party has moved on, or where a romantic affair has affected the relationship.

7. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve ever written?

Does *wanting* to write crossovers count? lol I want, so badly, to do more crossovers and fusions (which...are kinda deeper versions of crossovers in a way). The only one I do have posted is a crossover between Highlander and Torchwood -

The Immortal Mr. Jones A series of vignettes (some long, some short) in the life of the newly immortal Ianto Jones. My most ambitions project that I have been working on since late 2011/early 2012 is a fusion of the Avengers with Stephen King’s the Stand. I will get that done at some point *shakes fist*  The Stand, for those who don’t know it, is an epic 1000+ page novel about a flu epidemic (I know) that wipes out over 99% of the population and then two figures representing Good and Evil pull the survivors in two directions for a showdown. So basically it’s a non-powered modern AU set in that universe. It’s a passion and comfort project. lol

8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Yes. Well, minor bitching back when I was in a prior fandom because I tagged a pairing in a fic but it was pre-slash and not labeled as pre-slash. I got hate on...I think it was Torch Song? And I’ve gotten hate on tumblr re me and my fic in general as well. Fandom! *jazz hands* Oh! And I’ve also been hit by those reviewers within Winterhawk (among general Clint pairings actually) who like rate you on either number scales or the “meh” scale. Which isn’t hate exactly but...it’s passive aggressive bullshit because I can’t believe none of them realize at this point that the authors can see their bookmarks - you know?

9. Do you write smut?

Yes. Do I write it well? I have no idea. lol

10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I am aware of. Well...there was, I think, one of those reposting sites that had a few fics on it but I don’t think it was being passed off as someone else’s? I can’t quite recall. It’s why I have a note on AO3 about reposting my work anyway.

11. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Not entirely, but sort of. Let me explain - I am part of a PBEM game; which for those unfamiliar since it’s a term that was most heavily in use 15-20 years ago, in which you basically do a round robin type writing thing but rather than everyone writing the same characters you write your own characters and you play off what other people have done. Another way of looking at it is  it’s basically DnD without dice and written down rather than done out loud. You also don’t have to all be around at the same time. It’s a lot of fun and yes I have been in it for 20 years even though there aren’t many of us left but they are some of my dearest friends and fabulous writers. Wins all around.  One of the other writers and I have actually toyed with the idea of doing a co-written fic actually, mostly because we work super well together and keep getting ideas for things but can’t really do them as rpgs since the pbem style isn’t used much anymore.

12. What’s your all time favorite ship?

Winterhawk probably. Though, let’s be real - Han & Leia are epic and amazing as are John & Delenn (from Babylon 5).

13. What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Does wanting to expand The Black Stallion books as a wee child count? lol Not much of that was written save for world building ideas but there was a great oral tradition of telling stories to my friends. Otherwise...maybe a tie between Star Wars and Highlander. Star Wars was a love since I was super young but the writing bug didn’t hit me until around the same time Highlander was a thing as well.

14. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written? You rearrange me till I’m sane for sure. Though Torch Song, if it were finished, would be tied I imagine (I suck at picking favorites). Doctor Who: Previous Guest Stars Who’d Be Great as the New Doctor

It’s not unusual, in the world of Doctor Who, for the same actor to play more than one role on screen. From classic to modern Doctor Who, Nicholas Courtney, Ian Marter, Lalla Ward, Jaqueline Hill, Jean Marsh, Adjoa Andoh, Eve Myles, Naoko Mori, Vinette Robinson and more have all played multiple parts in the whoniverse. Before she debuted as companion Martha Jones, Freema Agyeman was a Torchwood employee who fell foul of the Cybermen in series two’s ‘Army of Ghosts’. Karen Gillan was a seer in series four episode ‘The Fires of Pompeii’ before she recurred as Eleven’s companion Amy Pond. Even the Doctor has had test runs. Colin Baker played a Gallifreyan commander in season twenty before taking over from Peter Davison. Peter Capaldi appeared in ‘The Fires of Pompeii’ as well as playing John Frobisher on Torchwood before taking up residence in the TARDIS.   

In the search for the new Doctor then, it makes sense to rifle through those actors the show already picked once to see who might be asked back. Continuity can be handled if need be – just do what Russell T. Davies did and make up something about spacial genetic multiplicity, or what Steven Moffat did and pretend it was all part of the Doctor’s plan to remind him to be a good man. In a few cases, the shared genetics wouldn’t even be an issue as the actor in question’s first appearance was either solely as a voice, or beneath too many layers of prosthetics to matter.

Gliding over a few previous guest stars whose current filming commitments likely take them out of the running (Andrew Garfield, Carey Mulligan, James Norton, Felicity Jones, Gemma Chan and Gugu Mbutha-Raw are probably all tied up…), here’s a choice selection of guest actors since 2005 who could all make fantastic, and very different, Doctors.

Chris Addison

Played: AI interface ‘Seb’, who greeted the recently deceased to Missy’s Nethersphere. Appeared in: Two-part Series Eight finale ‘Dark Water/Death in Heaven‘. Watch his stand-up and there’s a real Tenth Doctor energy about writer-director-producer-comedian-actor Chris Addison (The Thick of It, In the Loop, Veep). That probably means his time has come and gone on Doctor Who, as the show isn’t likely to want to repeat itself at this stage. Addison also has his plate full with the third series of Sky/FX’s excellent comedy-drama Breeders, but you could definitely picture him at the TARDIS console, couldn’t you?

Arsher Ali

Played: Bennett, a bookish recent military recruit to a Scottish underwater mining facility in 2119. Appeared in: Series 9 two-parter ‘Under the Lake/Before the Flood‘ Part of a large crew (initially at least) we didn’t see loads of Arsher Ali in his Doctor Who role, but what we saw was enough to convince that he has the presence and bearing of a potential Doctor. He was great as the lead in BBC’s Informer and as a conflicted journalist in the first series of The Missing, as well as in supporting role in Line of Duty‘s best series. Add all that to his breadth of stage experience and he’s a highly intriguing prospect.

Percelle Ascott

Played: Delph, a member of the Ux, humanoid aliens who live for thousands of years and have the power of telepathic inter-dimensional engineering (they can teleport planets). Appeared in: Season 11, Episode 10 ‘The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos‘. Not the only entry on this list with a Doctor Who-adjacent role in his back catalogue (see also: Anjli Mohindra in The Sarah-Jane Adventures), as a teenager, Ascott played science geek Benny in Russell T. Davies’ Wizards Vs Aliens. He was great then, but really showed his range in cancelled-too-soon Netflix supernatural drama The Innocents, where he stole the show. When he popped back up opposite Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor as the wise and conscience-led Delph, it was hard not to imagine what he might do in the Doctor’s role.

Zawe Ashton

Played: Lieutenant Journey Blue of the Combined Galactic Resistance, a solider on the Aristotle. Appeared in: the Ben Wheatley-directed Series 8 episode ‘Into the Dalek‘. A regular on ‘Next Doctor’ wishlists for some time now, Zawe Ashton is a terrific actor who came to fame as hedonist Vod in Channel 4 student comedy Fresh Meat and who’s recently been seen in Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale. In ‘Into the Dalek’ she played a ‘shoot first ask questions later’ soldier, but Ashton has the range for serious, absurd and very funny – in short, everything required to make a great Doctor.

Maxim Baldry

Played: Dr Polidori, a nineteenth century character who was part of Mary and Percy Shelley’s social circle. Appeared in: Series 12’s ‘The Haunting of Villa Diodati‘, about the summer Mary Shelley conceived her famous science-fiction novel Frankenstein. Baldry’s scored a role in Amazon Prime Video’s new mega-money Lord of the Rings TV series, so his dance card is likely full for now, but he’s just the sort of actor to breathe fresh life into the role of the Doctor, much in the way Matt Smith did back in 2010. He’s probably best recognised right now as Viktor, the asylum-seeking boyfriend of Russell Tovey’s character in Russell T. Davies’ future-predicting Years and Years, but the Russian-British actor has been acting in films since he was a child.

Sanjeev Bhaskar

Played: UNIT’s Colonel Ahmed, a colleague of Kate Lethbridge-Stewart in the fight against Missy’s Cybermen-from-corpses wicked plan. Appeared in: Series 8 finale ‘Death in Heaven‘. This Doctor Who role was just not enough of Sanjeev Bhaskar, an actor-writer-comedian whose role as DS Sunny Khan in ITV detective series Unforgotten has elevated him to the status of national treasure (partly because of his backpack, but mostly because of his decency and warm humour). Bhaskar is playing Cain opposite Asim Chaudhry’s Abel in Netflix’s forthcoming The Sandman series, and there’s series five of Unforgotten on the way, but wouldn’t he be great as the Doctor? As would another member of his family (see below)…

Mark Bonnar

Played: 22nd century miner Jimmy Wicks in the one with the ‘ganger’ clones. Appeared in: Series 6 two-parter ‘The Rebel Flesh/The Almost People’. No, of course they won’t let another funny, clever, slightly scary Scot with a brilliant face be the Doctor so soon after Peter Capaldi, but in a parallel universe, Mark Bonnar would make a very fine Doctor – something that hasn’t escaped Big Finish. He’s got it all (funny, clever, slightly scary, brilliant face) and frequently steals whichever show he’s in. Watch this two-parter, Catastrophe, Unforgotten series two and the brilliant Guilt (series two of which is approaching) for evidence of that.

Kevin Eldon

Played: Ribbons of the Seven Stomachs, a trader in the ‘Antizone’ obsessed with the Doctor’s “tubular” (or Sonic Screwdriver), and the voice of companion Antimony in an animated online adventure. Appeared in: Series 11’s ‘It Takes You Away‘ and 2001 webcast ‘Death Comes to Time’. It just seems a waste for the multi-talented Kevin Eldon to only play just one (or technically two, but just one on-screen) role on Doctor Who. And because his series 11 appearance was under a faceful of prosthetics, it wouldn’t even cause any continuity errors for him to come back in the role of the Doctor. Or a companion. Or another alien. Whatever it is, just give us more Eldon please.

O-T Fagbenle

Played: ‘Other Dave’, an engineer on an expedition to The Library who was eaten by the Vashta Nerada but brought back to life in the computer core. Appeared in: Series 4 two-parter ‘Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead‘ Fagbenle has recently been seen as Natasha’s fixer in Black Widow, June’s husband Luke in The Handmaid’s Tale, and as the lead character in sitcom Maxxx, about a washed-up former boy band member. The man has dramatic and comedy range, a very good American accent (not necessarily relevant here) and excellent screen presence. He’d rock the role of the Doctor.

Siobhan Finneran

Played: 17th century landlady/witch prosecutor Becka Savage/Morax queen Appeared in: Series 11’s ‘The Witchfinders‘. If the new Doctor’s going to be a woman in her early fifties, then it should really go to Jo Martin, but if she’s busy, how great would Siobhan Finneran be? The Happy Valley and Downton Abbey actor’s a treat in everything. She can be equal parts funny and imperious, and you can easily imagine her running circles around alien fiends and having a load of fun doing it.

Tamsin Grieg

Played: the Nurse who inserts Adam’s infospike on Satellite 5. Appeared in: Series 1 Simon Pegg-starring episode ‘The Long Game’, alongside Anna Maxwell-Martin (who might also deserve a place on this list come to think about it). Tamsin Grieg would make such a good Doctor it almost makes you angry she’s never played the role. She has the dramatic chops to deliver all the world-saving speeches, and the comedic skill to give it all a sparkling light touch. She was chilling in her small Series 1 role, but it only showed a tiny portion of what she can do. Also, wouldn’t she look great in a signature coat.

Suranne Jones

Played: Idris, into whom the ‘soul’ of the TARDIS was poured, making her the ship incarnate until her body died. Appeared in: Series 6 episode ‘The Doctor’s Wife‘, written by Neil Gaiman. Perhaps a bit too similar to Jodie Whittaker to be a likely successor, but you only have to see Suranne Jones in BBC/HBO drama Gentleman Jack to know that she’s made of Doctor material. As nineteenth-century landowner and famed lesbian Anne Lister, she’s cleverer and faster than everybody else, with a fierce sense of boundary-breaking why-not-ness, and plenty of emotion. Look at most of Jones’ roles, including that of the TARDIS itself, and she’d be great in the part, especially if her regular collaborator Sally Wainwright is enticed into the showrunner gig.

Paterson Joseph

Played: the venal Rodrick, who competed against Rose Tyler in The Weakest Link on the Game Station. Appeared in: Series 1 two-parter ‘Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways’. Paterson Joseph was famously up for the role of the Eleventh Doctor that ultimately went to Matt Smith, and has been a stalwart entry in ‘Who next?’ lists of this sort ever since, so… this isn’t going to happen, but wouldn’t it have been great if it had? The Peep Show, The Leftovers, Noughts + Crosses actor and Big Finish voice artist is currently showing off his commander chops in BBC One submarine thriller Vigil.

Ralf Little

Played: Steadfast, one of the few crew members of an off-world colony ship who weren’t murdered by nano-bots. Appeared in: Series 10 episode ‘Smile‘. He’s currently solving baroque murders on a fictional Caribbean island in Death in Paradise, but none of that lot ever last long, which could free Little up for another spin in the TARDIS. Little has been a familiar face on British TV for years, after playing feckless teenager Anthony on The Royle Family and starring in a BBC Three sitcom that spanned the entire noughties, but now a little older, with plenty of experience under his belt, it could be Ralf Little’s time.

Susan Lynch

Played: Pilot Angstrom, a competitor in an intergalactic race who meets Thirteen on her second ever adventure. Appeared in: Series 11 episode ‘The Ghost Monument’. You don’t need telling why Susan Lynch would make a great Doctor, just watch any decent British drama from the last decade and she’s in it, showing you. From Save Me to Unforgotten to Happy Valley to Killing Eve to any number of TV and film roles, she’s a scene-stealer who can play mystery, tragedy, power… everything the role calls for.

Daniel Mays

Played: Alex, the unwitting foster dad of a Tenza-in-human-form son, George. Appeared in: Series 6 episode ‘Night Terrors‘ written by Mark Gatiss. RADA-trained Danny Mays can do comedy, drama, has some serious dance moves, and was a Line of Duty guest star, so we know he’d have no problem at all learning the Doctor’s long speeches. If the TARDIS wanted to cast a Gallifreyan Doctor by way of Essex, he’d be top of the list.

T’Nia Miller

Played: The General, Military Commander of the Time Lords, in their Twelfth Regeneration. Appeared in: Series 9 finale ‘Hell Bent’. The Years & Years and Foundation star played a Time Lord in her Doctor Who debut and can even already tick ‘Regeneration’ off the to-do list. Miller clearly has the bearing and gravitas required of the Doctor, looks great even in impractically massive armour, and was the absolute stand-out in Netflix’s 2020 horror series The Haunting of Bly Manor. If they could work out the continuity for a reappearance, she’d rock the role.

Lucian Msamati

Played: Guido, the father of Isabella, a new enrolment at Rosanna Calvierri’s school for girls. Appeared in: Series 5 episode ‘The Vampires of Venice.’ Since appearing in this 2010 Doctor Who episode, Msamati has gone on to appear in major series, from Game of Thrones to Gangs of London and His Dark Materials. He’s an experienced stage actor too, who’d be sure to bring dramatic heft to the role of the Doctor.

Anjli Mohindra

Played: the Scorpion-like Queen of the Skithra, a species that relies on other species for their engineering. Appeared in: Series 12 episode ‘Nikola Tesla’s Night of Terror���. Anjli Mohindra already has a long history with Doctor Who, having appeared under layers of prosthetics and make-up in Series 12, provided the voice of the Mechanoid Queen for animated Time Lord Victorious series Daleks!, and playing the recurring role of Rani Chandra from series two of The Sarah Jane Adventures. Would that preclude the Vigil and Bodyguard star from stepping behind the TARDIS console in the top role? Nah.

Sophie Okonedo

Played: Elizabeth X of The United Kingdom aka Liz 10 of Starship UK. Appeared in: Series 5 episodes ‘The Beast Below’ and ‘The Pandorica Opens’. One of our finest actors, Sophie Okonedo not only played the future queen opposite Matt Smith and Karen Gillan in Doctor Who, she was also the voice of the Shalka Doctor’s companion in the BBC’s ‘Scream of the Shalka’ animated webcast, way back when. She’s currently starring in Amazon’s Wheel of Time adaptation and voices the key role of angel Xaphania in His Dark Materials, so probably has too full a plate to step into the TARDIS, but casting her as the Doctor would be a no-brainer.

Doctor Who: Why Jo Martin’s Ruth Should Be The Next Doctor

Tom Riley

Played: Robin Hood. Appeared in: 2014 Series 8 episode written by Mark Gatiss ‘Robot of Sherwood’. Tom Riley played a legendary genius and multi-hyphenate over three seasons of Da Vinci’s Demons so taking on the role of the Doctor wouldn’t really be a stretch. The actor is currently playing Augie in HBO/Sky drama The Nevers, which started life as a Joss Whedon-created supernatural fantasy before the showrunner left the project after the first six episodes.

Danny Sapani

Played: Colonel Manton/Runaway (depending on your perspective). Appeared in: Series 6 episode ‘A Good Man Goes to War’. The River Song/Melody Pond revelation overshadowed much else that happened in ‘A Good Man Goes to War’, but nonetheless, seasoned Brit actor Danny Sapani made an impression as enemy of the Doctor, Colonel Manton, who conspired with Madame Kovarian to kidnap Amy and Rory’s baby. Sapani’s enjoying a long career on screen and stage, with stand-out TV roles in Penny Dreadful, Harlots and Killing Eve, as well as the upcoming part of Captain Jacob Keyes in video game adaptation Halo.

Amit Shah

Played: Rahul, brother to missing person Asha Chandra, both victims of Tzim-Sha. Appeared in: The Series 11 opener ‘The Woman Who Fell to Earth‘. A skilled comedic actor who has a habit of stealing scenes, even in serious supporting roles like this one, or last year’s turn as a doctor experimenting on children in His Dark Materials, Amit Shah would be a great surprise to find in the TARDIS. Experienced but not yet a household name, there’s a Matt Smith vibe about this one. Revive him as a companion, at the very least?

Peter Serafinowicz

Played: the voice of alien warlord The Fisher King (though the character’s screams were provided by Slipknot front man Corey Taylor). Appeared in: Series 9 episode ‘Before the Flood‘. Likely not the photo of Peter Serafinowicz his Nan keeps on the mantelpiece, this is the villain he voiced in a Series 9 two-parter. It’s Serafinowicz out of the make-up and prosthetics though, who’d make an intriguing prospect as the Doctor. Great voice(s), great face, serious presence, humour, loads of experience… what else do you need?

Nina Sosanya

Played: Trish Webber, mother of Chloe Webber, the little girl endowed with the psychic powers of an Isolus. (And in Big Finish audio adventure ‘Aquitaine’ Captain Maynard’). Appeared in: Series 2 Olympics episode ‘Fear Her‘. A regular RTD collaborator, with previous roles in Casanova and Wizards Vs Aliens as well as Doctor Who, Nina Sosanya is a joy to see in any cast, which must be why she’s (thankfully) in everything. She’s great in comedy (Good Omens, WIA, Staged, Nathan Barley) and in drama (Last Tango in Halifax, Killing Eve, His Dark Materials, Little Birds) and would no doubt make a very convincing centuries-old two-hearted big-brained Time Lord. Get her a statement coat and get her in the TARDIS.

Meera Syal

Played: Dr Nasreen Chaudhry, the scientist in charge of an ill-fated deep drilling mission in a Welsh village. (As well as voicing audio stories and audiobook Borrowed Time). Appeared in: Series 5 two-parter ‘The Hungry Earth’ and ‘Cold Blood‘. Actor-writer-comedian Meera Syal, CBE, had a fair crack of the whip in Series 5 Silurian two-parter, but would always, always be welcome back for more. As well as comedic talent, she has the dramatic presence, brains and stature to play the Doctor. Her husband Sanjeev Bhaskar (see above) will just have to fight her for the role.

Joivan Wade

Played: Bristol graffiti artist Christopher Riggens aka Rigsy. Appeared in: Series 8’s ‘Flatline’ and Series 9’s ‘Face the Raven‘. Joivan Wade is currently starring as Victor Stone in Doom Patrol for the MCU, so it may be a while before he returns to the UK, but his two appearances in Doctor Who proved him to be a charismatic talent who’d energise the TARDIS if welcomed back.

Harriet Walter

Played: British Technology Secretary and later, Prime Minister Jo Patterson. Appeared in: Series 12’s ‘Revolution of the Daleks‘ (as well as voicing the role of Beatrice in audio story ‘The Boy That Time Forgot’). Having a Dame in the TARDIS would be quite something; that Dame being Harriet Walter would be off the charts brilliant. Just look at her – the face, the voice, the hard-to-define quality that means the moment she opens her mouth, everybody shuts up and listens. Harriet Walter, stage and screen star of Killing Eve, Succession, The Crown, Downton Abbey and so much more, would make a very fine Doctor indeed.

Marc Warren

Played: Elton Pope, co-founder member of LINDA, a group of humans who meet to swap stories on their encounters with the Doctor. Appeared in: Little-loved Series 2 episode ‘Love & Monsters‘. A very familiar face on British screens, with regular roles in hits including Hustle, Mad Dogs, The Good Wife and The Musketeers, there’s always been something about Marc Warren that makes you think he’d make a really great alien. See him as The Gentleman in Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, or Mr Teatime in The Hogfather, and you’ll agree. Top Doctor potential.

Gemma Whelan

Played: the voice of loads of characters for Big Finish audio adventures, but never (yet) on screen. Appeared in: ‘Ninth Doctor Adventures’, ‘Dalek Universe’, ‘Counter-Measures’ and more. Always a treat wherever you find her on screen, actor-comedian Gemma Whelan is best recognised as warrior leader of the Iron Islands, Yara Greyjoy in Game of Thrones but she’s been great in Killing Eve, Gentleman Jack, Upstart Crow, The End of the F***ing World, and recently, a killer episode of Inside No. 9. If Doctor Who is looking for another late-thirties Yorkshire lass to take on the Doctor’s mantle in future, go Whelan or go home.

Do you know where I can listen to the Torchwood audios?

Of course! So there’s the Torchwood BBC audio plays, which you might be able to find through Audible or BBC iPlayer if you’re in the UK. There’s also the Torchwood audiobooks which you can purchase or find through your local library maybe.

The ones I believe you might be refering to are probably the Big Finish Torchwood audios, which you can purchase right here on their website. Their monthly audios are reasonably priced - when I say reasonably, I say that considering all the effort and hiring costs and the pay for the writers and directors and sound mixers and graphic designers that should be considered before even the actors get paid - at $8.99 USD for digital downloads (and more expensive if you buy the physical CD), which I believe is also something like 7.99 euros but I might be wrong there, as I am American. 

There are also the occasional special release, including an audio set that includes the full original cast, along with a range for Torchwood One, featuring Yvonne Hartman and Ianto Jones. Plus, there’s also other collections, like one centric on Captain John Hart and a whole range of boxsets devoted to Jack called the Lives of Captain Jack. 

THEN, there’s Seasons 5 and 6, all great audios of 12-13 episodes a piece, featuring Jack and Gwen and a whole range of new but wonderful and interesting characters set closer to the modern day. The lack of Ianto, Tosh, and Owen may deter you at first, but I assure you, from my experiences still going through Season 5 and from reviews from my friends who have heard both seasons, that the new seasons are phenomenal. Some argue they may even be the best seasons of Torchwood, but that’s for you to determine.

Of course, if you’re worried about price, I would advise, as I do, to either pre-order the audios when they are at their cheapest or wait for a sale, during which their prices do go down a bit, but keep in mind that the sales are not too frequent. Still, sometimes, you’ll get lucky.

But what you shouldn’t do, and what I beg, beg, beg of you not to do is, PLEASE DO NOT PIRATE BIG FINISH. 

They are a small company of creatives, and it’s not cheap to keep hiring John Barrowman or Eve Myles or Gareth David-Lloyd or Naoko Mori or Burn Gorman. These are individual people, not the BBC. These are writers and directors and soundmixers and graphic designers and actors for whom this is their livelihood or part of their livelihood, and they deserved to get paid. If you pirate Big Finish audios instead of buying them, you take money away from Big Finish as well as proof of purchase that we want these audios and we want Big Finish to keep making them. Money sells.

You don’t want Big Finish to lose the Torchwood license and stop being able to make audios, do you? (Rhetorical question, because no one should want that.)

Plus, on that note, it’s also better to buy directly from Big Finish rather than Amazon because of the exact reasons listed above. Also, it just doesn’t feel right or feel ethical.

So basically. Tldr: The Torchwood audios you are most likely refering to are the Big Finish audios, which can be found on their website. There are many varieties and ranges you might enjoy. Above everything, don’t pirate Big Finish or you’ll make a lot of fans angry. Additionally, in conclusion, I hope this post helped you, I’m sorry about the length, and I hope you enjoy the audios if you are able to purchase them!

An Unearthly Child. I wanted to watch it all in order! Still do! My first New Who episode was “Blink,” as forced upon me by @raisegrate. I did enjoy it.

I didn’t at the time, but I do now. I have a couple of screwdrivers, a Fourth Doctor, an Ice Warrior, and not-quite-Legos of Doctors 1-11. (-WD)

Didn’t even know it existed as a child. But I liked it as an adult.

One. He’s the first I saw and I’ve went through some of his more than once, due to the podcast, so he has a special place in my heart.

12. Your favourite Doctor?

It varies depending on the day. I quite like Two, Eleven, and Twelve, though.

13. Least favourite Doctor?

Possibly 5 or 13? More because they don’t get a whole lot to do, than them being bad.

14. Best regeneration?

Technically speaking, there’s something about that first one that is still so good. Emotionally speaking, Two’s regeneration is terrifying and I quite like Twelve’s speech before regenerating.

15. Do you like “Doctor-Lite” episodes?

Yeah! They’re all pretty good! Even “Love and Monsters!” Yeah, I said it! (The end is bad, but the rest is good.)

One calls himself human a handful of times. Does that count? If not, definitely Five. He seems the most like a regular guy in a weird situation out of all of them.

The Day of the Doctor, for sure.

Eleven’s speech to young Amy in “The Big Bang.” That episode is just solid all around.

The writing. You can do great things with most of them. Even the ones you dislike. Like, I hate the farting aliens, but they are occasionally used well.

If I had to pick, I’d say... Cybermen. Daleks are very samey and loud. Weeping Angels get less interesting every time they are used. But there’s a human element to the Cybermen that, when utilized, can be very effective and unsettling.

The one where Two rides around on ones he made nice.

I don’t know what it is, but whatever it is in “Midnight.”

i, a fan of superwholock, dissect and give my opinion on the individual shows

idk i thought this would be fun and i currently have 4-5 hours to kill soooo

let’s start with

doctor who

(only new who. i have not seen the older stuff :( )

k. so. i have been a fan of this since i was pretty young. honestly i think i was a little too young to be watching it when my mom first showed me it but that’s beside the point. basically: i really like dr who

this is probably the best show out of superwholock, both in my opinion and in general. however... i am going to be nitpicky bc why not

1. the canon. 

(yes the example is abt a dr who episode)

in short, the canon is comprised of a) retcons and b) contradictions. im not an avid follower of canon with any media but good god nobody can keep up with dr who canon

(i am blaming moffat bc i hate him and i think a lot of it is his fault anyway)

2. representation

honestly, the representation isn’t bad. however, i would describe it less as “good” and more as “a good starting point.”

for example, there is quite a bit of queer rep, POC rep, and a lot of characters are women. however, while this is nice, the show could still use a lot more rep, and the rep it has currently should probably be improved upon (for example: jack harkness is NOT straight, but he falls under the “multi-spec person wants to screw everyone” stereotype (i have not seen torchwood so this may be amended in that i just needed an example off the top of my head)).

3. story

some people yearn for romance. i yearn for the days when the doc would take their companion to some party, flirt with a tree, the companion almost dies while britney spears is playing in the background, etc. etc.

basically, the story starts out nice. just a bunch of goofing off, maybe a “big deal” thing here and there. life was fun.

then, the story changes. (this happened specifically from eleven onward, so yeah you can bet your ass im blaming moffat ‘cuz it’s his fault) things gradually became less fun. conspiracies ran amok; just when you thought it was over, turns out there’s an even bigger part of this plan that what you just defeated. the doc actually started caring about the timeline (what happened to time being wibbly wobbly?) sure, there are still fun episodes where the doc and the companion(s) go out for funsies but it’s just not the same as it was. 

4. morals

morals are good. basically:

you can have a dark past but still have a bright future, and

be kind

at least one of the doctors played by one of the male actors should have worn a dress. there were plenty of opportunities but noooooo there’s a gender binary or something (like,,, they’re an alien????? if gender on gallifrey is the same as gender on earth i am going to fly to britain and drop kick some writers)

this show is notorious for bad rep and for good reason. kevin, our beloved prophet and the only recurring asian-american character? dead. charlie, so nerdy and fun and also a lesbian? dead. castiel, the angel who was totally gay? dead. basically: if you find yourself in spn and you are not a straight white man, etc etc, you are going to a) die or b) die but in a worse way

3. mythology/treatment of religions

okay so. a while back i had a wicca/witchcraft hyperfixation which was closely followed by a general pagan religions hyperfixation, so i know some stuff here and there abt religions.

and good golly does this show make me MAD

why is christianity the central and most powerful religion? (i know why, it’s a rhetorical question) why do you demonize the other religions?? (again it’s rhetorical)

one thing that really annoys me is when they say something is a “pagan god.” like,,, do you know how many gods that contains??? if you didn’t know, a religion is considered pagan if it isn’t under the abrahamic religions umbrella. what are the abrahamic religions, you ask? well, they are christianity, judaism, and islam. literally every other religion ever is a pagan religion. so, when they say “it’s a pagan god,” i cry.

back to demonizing... they literally made a greek muse eat someone. my greek mythology phase ended a long time ago and i didn’t really get into the muses but i am p sure they didn’t eat people. also the fact that it makes hoodoo look dark and stuff when it’s actually more abt peace and healing... i bet ten dollars it’s because hoodoo was created by enslaved african americans

there are so many examples of this show disrespecting religions... i just can’t

Doctor Who - Thirteenth Doctor

I adore 13. She’s clever and awkward and lonely and full of life. She has a streak of darkness that we’ve only occasionally glimpsed, and that intrigues me. I love that she has three companions, and how they show up not only her strengths but her character flaws -- like the way she trusts them to be competent right up until her terror of losing them kicks in. Casting Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor was a stroke of genius.

Dante’s Peak - Mayor Rachel Wando

You may be wondering why I picked a one-off movie character. I unabashedly love this movie, and could watch a whole series about Rachel, her kids, and Dr. Harry Dalton. I love how matter-of-fact Rachel is, getting shit done and juggling small-town politics, work, kids, and a stymied desire for companionship and support. I really like the team she makes with Harry, and how well they work together. She’s one of my all-time favourite disaster movie heroines.

Twelfth Night - Viola/Cesario   

This is my favourite Shakespeare play. As I get older, I have less time for angst in general (or Orsino, tbh), but Viola’s angst is so often undercut by humour, and I adore her all the more for it. That duel. Hahaha, omg. Also, the crossdressing and genderfluidity floats my boat (so to speak ha ha). 

Pride and Prejudice - Elizabeth Bennet 

Lizzie!!!! So witty and flawed and clever. I love her.

Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears - Phryne Fisher 

I don’t really watch TV anymore. I tend to wait and see it all on DVD or streaming or whatever, so I didn’t see all that much of Miss Fisher when it was screening on TV -- just enough to know it was a lot of fun. I went to see the movie, though, and fell in love with Phryne so much. She’s kind of awful, because she’s so wrapped up in living her best life, and that can mean she’s not always kind, and can be terribly manipulative. But that is such a breath of fresh air and I loved her for it. I think I need to go watch the whole series now; and how delightful that it’s there for me to discover. Also, her clothes!!! And her men!!!

Torchwood - Dr Martha Jones

I didn’t see the later David Tennant seasons of Doctor Who, because that was around when I stopped watching TV. I’ve seen random eps, but not the whole arc. So I missed Martha Jones for the most part. I first discovered her in Torchwood, and loved her so much -- her cheekiness and spunk and the way she was just as delighted with Jack as he was with her -- that I was tempted to go back and watch her in Doctor Who. And then a friend of mine said they hated Martha, and I was like, “What?!? But why? She’s so great!” and they said her arc in Doctor Who sucked, and so I’m stuck in limbo, hesitant to watch it in case it really does suck, but still yearning for more Martha. I think that might be why she’s stuck with me so much as a character.

James Bond - M, Olivia Mansfield

Judi Dench’s M pleases me enormously. She’s such a great character. Tough as guts, from that era just before feminism really opened management career doors, and so just as much of a dinosaur as Bond is, in her own way. I’ve known women like her in real life -- the ones who had to carve themselves into something diamond-like, in order to fight their way through the ranks of all the men around them. I love the way Dench brings all of that to the screen, even when the films’writers sometimes don’t quite know how to write a woman in that role. Dench still carries it off -- complete with emotional armour, warts, war-wounds, and cleverness. She’s damaged and complex and glorious.

Princess Tutu - Duck/Tutu

An ugly duckling ballerina. My jam.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Buffy Summers

One of the best action heroines ever. Buffy was shrewd rather than clever, and full of grit even when struggling with depression. I tend to like characters with book-smarts because I love books myself, but I really like the way Buffy is allowed to be able and competent in different ways. She struggles not only with academics and money and her role as the Slayer, but with mental health issues (especially in season 6), and that’s what makes her so complex and interesting. Over the course of the series she comes into her own sense of self and emotional strength, and that is a journey I admire very much.

MARTHA JONES Is The Perfect DOCTOR WHO Supporting Character

Having recently rewatched Series 3 of Doctor Who, not only is it my favourite of new Who, but so is Martha Jones. I’d also go as far as saying she is the perfect supporting character.

First off, Freema Agyeman was the perfect casting decision. The showrunners were really impressed with her in the minor role she played at the end of Series 2. Instead of ignoring this fact, the writing brings up how it was Martha’s cousin who died at the Battle of Canary Warf. This accomplishes a couple of things; it explains how the same actress played two characters on the show without causing continuity errors. Then you have the Doctor forced to be reminded of said battle.

And Rose.

Which brings up to how the Doctor is still dealing with losing Rose at the end of Series 2. He needs a new companion and when a smart, clever, resourceful doctor presents herself to fill the spot, they both take it. The show gives us two doctors for the titular Doctor to choose from to accompany him. It’s obvious why he’d go for Martha given how scared the other candidate is. Unlike Rose, Martha was whisked into an adventure along with a hundred other people yet she’s the one who joins him in the TARDIS.

Rose’s shadow looms long over the Doctor. The Time Lord takes Martha to the same places he took Rose. People have criticized the showrunner Russell T. Davies of being obsessed with the character of Rose and the drama that came with it, but for me it just comes off as staying true to the character of the Doctor. He isn’t just going to forget about Rose and how in sync they were. That would be very disrespectful to Rose and her fans. Sadly this means Martha does get left behind as a character. She fulfills her purpose perfectly even though it means she cannot compete when it comes to Rose. It makes her character tragic and very sympathetic.

Snog her, you idiot!

Maybe it’s just me finding Freema and Martha attractive but as an audience member you really wish the Doctor could see Martha the way she sees him. Albeit, the Doctor shouldn’t really be dating any of his companions to be honest. Still, Martha isn’t getting enough out of their relationship or lack thereof which is sad.

Speaking of sad, Martha can show her vulnerability as easily as she can be sassy and funny. She can stare at the Doctor with puppy dog eyes in one scene yet demand answers about him and his past the next. All these emotions come off naturally, both in the writing and with Freema’s acting. She’s just a perfect blend of a supporting character. Balanced like all things should be.

Now, having said that, there is a problem with Martha. Despite being a balanced character that also means she doesn’t have the highest of highs or the lowest of low points. For the most part, Martha lacks major strengths and weaknesses that would solidify her as a great character.

Martha’s fun even when she tries too hard to be funny.

For that to happen, Series 3 would have needed a Martha-centric episode. If she had wanted to go back to being a doctor for a while then maybe her personality would have shone through more. This would cause a detour in the story and mess with the pacing though. One could argue that “Blink” does that, but who’d want to get rid of that episode? Plus the Doctor-lite episode was needed so both Tennant and Agyeman could do more shooting for other episodes.

I have loads of ideas for a Martha-centric episode...

Martha is a perfect supporting character, as in she services both the protagonist, story and plot. Supporting characters just tend to not be fleshed out well enough to be great characters. Arguably this changes when Martha decides to leave the Doctor. I haven’t seen her adventures in Torchwood but (I will check them out now!) Martha’s return in Series 4 was glorious. When we last see her in Ten’s last episode she’s an outright badass. So there is growth and character development, I just wonder how much of that is offscreen.

Martha’s main weakness, if you can call humanity that, is her feelings of inadequacy brought on by her unrequited crush/love for the Doctor. It humanizes Martha, adding to the juxtaposition between her and the inhuman Time Lord. Again, serving the protagonist and the story perfectly. The one-sided love story just never goes anywhere. Martha’s decision to just get out is sensible and it makes her extremely likeable and wise. It provides a character arc for her, but it’s not exactly memorable nor does it propel the story into new heights.

Martha literally gives her last breath to the Doctor as they are about to suffocate on the Moon.

That said, Martha went way beyond the call of duty, sacrificing herself to help the Doctor. Especially during the two-parter "Human Nature/Family of Blood” where Martha had to witness the Doctor falling in love with another woman while trying to keep the Time Lord safe from evil aliens. All the while having to put up with the prejudiced attitudes of the early 20th century England.

Right before Martha schools her on all the bones in her hand that’s about to pimp slap her.

In the same two-parter, when the amnesiac Doctor-turned-human falls down the stairs, Martha comes over as soon as she hears of it. Concern for the Doctor’s wellbeing is the first thing on her mind. Sure, Martha’s trapped there with the Doctor being her only way out, but it never comes across like that. The things Martha endures are sacrifices she’s deemed necessary. It really speaks volumes about the true grit of her character.

Waifu material.

She never becomes bitter or hardened by any of it either. Yet she isn’t without some sass either. When Martha’s told she should knock before entering, she steps back towards the door, knocks it and comes back. Martha Jones is such a well rounded character it’s a shame we only had her for a single season.

I’ll reiterate; all this this makes Martha my favourite New Who companion. It makes her the perfect supporting character.

I was going to make a joke about this, but I think the logo speaks for itself...

Martha’s own supporting cast reflects this as well. They all serve to paint a picture of Martha and pushing the story forward. Martha’s mother Francine is excelently utilized with very little screen time. Her skepticism towards the strange Doctor is only natural. It makes perfect sense for Francine to work with Saxon’s people who seemingly want to protect Martha like she does. This side plot in “42″ is actually the best part about the otherwise mundane enviromentalist episode.

Martha isn’t a jokester, but she has her moments. Kudos to Freema’s versatility as an actress.

As a character though, Jackie Tyler, annoying as she could be at times, is far better though. Jackie’s flirty personality, her accent and overall attitude towards life just shines through her every delivery of a line of dialogue. There are plot involving Jackie’s dead husband coming back to life and creating a deadly time paradox, too. Whereas Martha’s dad dating another woman doesn’t have effect on the plot. It doesn’t even phase Martha herself, she just tries to steer clear and juggle between her mom and dad which is easy because by now she lives on her own. Drama free.

That is when she isn’t being jettisoned into the sun!

Side note, I’m glad the character got a happy ending, albeit not with the Doctor like she wished. After all the hardships she endured and sacrifices she made for the Doctor for very little reward, she’s earned a little peace and quiet. She wasn’t lost on a parallel Earth nor forgot her adventures. She didn’t “die” like Amy, Rory and Clara.

It would have been absolutely terrible had Martha died. She’s my favourite of the bunch so it’s good to know she’s still out there somewhere in the Whoverse. The fact she could be easily written back into the show some day warms my heart.

For future reference, should Martha come back to the show and should the writers decide to kill off her character... like they are doing with the show proper at the moment... then allow me to give the showrunners and writers some advice. If Martha has to die, make her sacrifice herself for the Doctor one last time. As a one final act of love towards the man (assuming he’s back to being a man).

She’s talking about Shakespeare, but Martha’s line is very indicative of her relationship with the Doctor.

Don’t give us Mad Martha who decides to burn down whole cities full of people, okay. Don’t give us that “Martha kinda forgot her Hippocratic Oath” crap. You got that? Just making sure...

Anyway, Series 3 wasn’t the end for Martha and I’m so glad the character came back in Series 4 and like I said, I’ll be checking out Torchwood for more Martha appearances. But we’re here to talk about her as a companion so let’s get back on track.

That’s what she said about my tangent.

Now, you could get a good episode about Martha’s family drama, much like how Rose changed time to save his dad. But it’s not really necessary. The family drama in Series 11 has certainly shown how dull and dreary stories like that can be. That is why, even though Martha and her family aren’t exactly great characters that provide great stories, they are perfect at providing a clear context to the imaginary world that the Doctor, the TARDIS and time travel represents.

Freema sells that magical moment of a companion stepping into the TARDIS for the first time perfectly.

Again, perfect supporting characters that don’t waste time away from the things people actually watch the show for. That said, I wouldn’t have minded seeing a cat fight between Francine and her ex husband’s new bimbo girlfriend!

Just a single scene like that would have been endlessly entertaining and damn memorable!

Imagine that but between her and the bimbo: “Keep away from my husband.”

Martha’s sister Tish fares a lot better as a character as far as personality goes. There isn’t really a sibling rivalry going on, but Tish’s remarks about Martha dating a science geek speaks a lot about both her and Martha’s characters. What they look for in a man. When the Doctor asks what a science geek means, Martha explains it’s just someone who’s passionate about science which makes the Doctor happy. Which is what Martha wants, whether she was telling him the truth or sparing his feelings with such an interpretation. Brilliant writing for the characters all around.

Tish working with both Lazarus and Saxon, even if both instances were brought about by Saxon himself, tells about Tish being drawn towards wealth and power.

She was even ready to “snog” a de-aged Lazarus!

Damn right, she is! Not just a pretty face but smart too!

I wish we’d have seen more of Tish. Her interaction with Martha really created a contrast that benefitted both characters. In “The Lazarus Experiment” especially, Martha gets to shine. After helping her family escape, she goes back for the Doctor against her mother’s wishes. Later, Tish comes along. Martha takes control and takes Tish with her so that the Doctor has time to defeat Lazarus himself. Martha let’s the Doctor shine and in doing so shines herself. Tish acts as a great supporting character herself by asking who the Time Lord is. At this point Martha already knows because she’s asked him herself, demanding answers.

“We need to talk.” Never a good sign except in fiction.

Martha or the handling of her character is often criticized for how she had a thing for the Doctor. Her character was much more. In an early episode “Gridlock” we get one of Martha’s best moments; when she demands answers about the Doctor. She forces the Time Lord to come out of his shell, to stop pretending everything was all right. The Doctor tells Martha about being the last of the Time Lords which fits perfectly to the story of the Series.

Namely that the Doctor is not the last of his kind.

The Doctor also mentions how the Time Lords were all lost in a Time War, battling against the Daleks. It’s a great segway into the next two-parter story about Daleks themselves. The story flows really well with one thing leading to the next. The pacing is really good while the characters remain true to themselves. That said, it’s good to have Martha around to challenge the Doctor.

Asking seemingly harmless questions like this is vital for good supporting characters. We get to see the Doctor’s reaction to his home planet being brought up.

That said, I should mention a couple of things. In the episode “Smith & Jones” the Doctor kisses Martha to mark her with some of his DNA. This is done on the fly and while the Doctor had a plan, I dislike how this puts Martha in danger. Now, she doesn’t get into any serious trouble but considering how trigger happy the Judoon platoon upon the moon are, things could have gone real bad. This kiss does start Martha’s infatuation with the Doctor so there’s that.

Wait, don’t snog her, you idiot! Now she’s in danger!

The Doctor’s indifference to cool and hot Martha does make him in return look cooler. Martha is essentially the Doctor’s cheerleader which, despite sounding as not complimentary, really is that. You need the audience to root for the main character and this is partly achieved through supporting characters singing their praises. Of course, the characters still have to earn that praise. You can’t just have characters emotionally validate themselves or others to the audience.

Though it doesn’t hurt when Shakespeare himself is singing your praises.

The downside to the Doctor’s indifference is that he does come across as a jerk at times. Now this can be either a good or a bad thing based on the audience. While Martha is perfect as a supporting character, you don’t want neither her or the protagonist to be perfect. The Doctor missing Rose, as annoying as that can be to some, is keeping true to the character. The Doctor is in mourning. It’s his grief period and Martha is there to help him through it. In doing so, Martha learns that she doesn’t want to wait forever for another person to notice her.

In one of the best episodes in New Who’s history, “Utopia” draws a parallel between Doctor and Martha and the Professor and his assistant Chantho. Much like Martha, Chantho is smart, kind and caring. Based on her interactions and demeanor, Chantho adores the Professor and like Martha with the Doctor, she has a crush on him. Both the Professor and the Doctor don’t notice these signs. For an individual episode this is all well and good, but given the secret about Professor Yana, this parallel is much more impactful than it seems at first.

Spoilers to a Series over ten years old; Yana is actually the Master. This twist alone, the callback to the concept of a fob watch allowing a Time Lord to masquerade as a human was a brilliant touch. Martha of course recognizes Yana’s fob watch instantly and again, Freema sells the feeling of terror and dread so damn well.

Later in the episode Martha recognizes the Master’s voice as Harold Saxon. The name we’ve heard all throughout the Series. A lesser show would not have given Martha’s character such insight. It’s one of the numerous details that make her character clever and likeable.

Unfortunately, likeable characters aren’t always the most compelling ones. This makes Martha an underappreciated companion in the series history. While Martha is my favourite, I can’t really blame the detractors. Martha Jones served her purpose on the show which meant couldn’t shine as brightly of a star of her caliber. I’d still take her any day over Clara Oswald who was such a bad supporting character that it encroached on becoming the Clara Who show. And I say this as someone who loved the past and future Claras and Jenna Coleman playing the character(s).

Anyway, back to the actual episodes. While context is key, I find it interesting how the Master kills Chantho, showing no regard for her life. Now, the Doctor does care about life and he’s risked his own life for Martha many times. Still, being around the Doctor, much like with the Master, is dangerous. Neither can truly love their companions the way they want. That parallel is fascinating and I’m glad Martha was allowed to walk away from it of her own free will. Definitely one of the reasons this Series has the best writing out of New Who.

One of the few times the Doctor rewards Martha’s loyalty and bravery. Her reaction to receiving a key to the TARDIS is everything!

Speaking of writing. Before Martha says her goodbye, she has to walk the Earth and spread the gospel of the Doctor to the people of the world. Many have criticized how the show made the Doctor out to be a god who regains his power through prayer essentially. Rightfully so because even in context the twist does feel outlandish albeit totally awesome. Subjectively I’d say it’s one of the best moments in New Who.

Basically, the people have been subliminaly made to vote Master/Saxon into office. Now the Doctor has tapped himself into the same telepathic field and receives prayers, the word “Doctor” across the world. This turns him basically invincible for a time. Time enough to defeat the Master.

Because the telepathic field had been established in a prior episode and its effects had been reincorporated over and over again in the form of a drumming that the Master himself heard inside his head, I find that the twist is properly set up. That and because Martha has spent a whole year travelling around the world acting as a cheerleader for the Doctor.

The best cheerleader you could ever hope for!

Though how the Doctor’s orders relayed by Martha never reached the Master’s ears is a mystery. Martha was aware of a traitor though and she spoke to her accordingly, feeding false information. I doubt she told the people about the telepathic field. The Master could not put two and two together when the Doctor himself told of the plan. To the Master it was just hope and prayer.

Suffice to say I have mixed feelings about the final twist. None of this detracts from Martha Jones as a companion though and that’s why I wrote this blog post about her. If you’ve managed to get this far I thank you.

There’s lots of different stuff for the Torchwood EU, but generally it can be said that you can (mostly) go through it randomly, as long as you’ve seen all of the tv show. They rarely ever reference each other.

There are the novels, the comics, the bbc radio plays, the audio books and the Big Finish audios.

The novels, radio plays and audio books are available on iTunes and amazon, most of the BF things are also on amazon, but newer audio releases will only be available on the Big Finish website for the first 3 months.

I can’t really say a lot about the novels, since I’ve only read like 2 1/2 (of the 6 or so I own, whoops).

There are also comics, but tbh, I don’t really know any of them. I own two, but read only one and they take place post MD, I think. I really can’t help you there, sorry!

Now the bbc radio plays are really good. They are ca. one hour long full cast audios made in 2009 and 2011 for the BBC. They all take place post Exit Wounds/pre CoE. Just check out the summaries on itunes and get those you think are interesting. They are all definitely worth it. My favourites are The Dead Line, Lost Souls and The House of the Dead (but be careful with that one - it’s the only post CoE one and its 45min of Janto feels and tears).

The audio books - idk, I have them all, they are all good, there’s a set with all 10 audio books on amazon. They all take place at various points of the Torchwood timeline. (tbh I haven’t listened to them in quite some time and don’t remember much, but one of THE BEST audios ever, is In The Shadows)

Now - Big Finish!

There’s the main range (one hour long audios, usually focusing on 1-2 characters of the main team), the Torchwood specials (boxsets/longer stories) and then the new seasons 5 and 6 (Aliens Among Us and God Among Us).

Main range - As I said, you can pretty much listen to them in any order you like, you don’t need to buy them all, they are mostly stand alones.However, some of them connect through the ‘Committee storyline’ and sooner or later  you will stumble across one of these. I highly recommend you listen to The Conspiracy first. Its the very first TW audio BF released and it sets up that plotline. After that -again- it doesn’t matter in what order you listen to the audios. There are A LOT of main range audios and there are even more coming the next 12 months, so I’d say go for the audios with the characters you like the most/want more stories with.

Side note - There the Torchwood special ‘The Torchwood Archive’. This one is part of The Committee storyline and references a bunch of the first 12 audios of the main range. Buying that one probably won’t make sense unless you listened to at least some of these.

The Specials - these are the boxsets, usually 3h long and a little more expensive

Outbreak - post Exit Wounds, of all the specials, this is the one I’d recommend the most. Episode 2 has a lot of Janto. Gwen is great too in it, and Andy and Rhys are there as well!

Believe - The original cast is back together for the first time!!! Personally, I only listened to it once when it came out. In my opinion, it’s not as good as I hoped it would be and something happens in the second episode that I just don’t like at all and has put me off from listening to it again. So I wouldn’t really recommend it, but on the other hand, I barely remember anything about the story besides that thing I mentioned, so I can’t really say anything else here.

Torchwood One - Before The Fall and Torchwood One - Machines! Two boxsets full of Ianto goodness, with Yvonne Hartman, back when he was still working for Torchwood One. I haven’t listened to Machines yet, but that one has a story written by Gareth about how Ianto first started working for Torchwood.

and not technially a Torchwood special, bc its under the Doctor Who stuff I think, but there’s The Lives of Captain Jack, which are 4 one hour long stories about Jack’s life. He meets Jackie Tyler in one, another one takes place during his time agency years and in another one you get the story about him and Alonso and one is about his time right after he got made immortal. It’s pretty solid, but if you’re looking for Torchwood stuff only, this doesn’t really have anything to do with it.

Aliens Among Us and God Among Us:

These are the official series 5 and 6 of Torchwood, they take place after MD (but only reference it, like, twice, I think). They are each 12 episodes long, the last 4 episodes of GAU come out this June. There’s a completely new team around Jack and Gwen. Rhys is in it as well as Andy and some other old faces from the show. They are quite expensive and not for everyone. Getting into all that would take a while, so I’m not gonna do that here. But if you wanna know more about them, shoot me a message :) (I really recommend them thought, bc I love them)

The main take away is - check what you can afford and which characters you want to know more about and focus on that. Generally, I’d also recommend audios more than the novels, and the go to audios are definitely the big finish ones more than the rest.

Top 5 bisexual characters in anything? 😘😘

LOUISE. I nearly died laughing when I saw this hours ago, and now I’m laughing in delight all over again. What a perfect ask. (I recently made a list of shows with great bi rep for someone else, who didn’t really ask for it but I am that extra.) But I’m always game to celebrate all the wonderful bisexuals who exist in fiction. (BTW, limiting this list to only 5 proved harder than expected, because we’ve had such a wealth of representation in recent years, even if it’s not all perfect, or some characters may not quite use that label for themselves.)

In any case, here are my current faves:

5. Korra (Legend of Korra)

I loved Korra from the moment I met her and her tiny self confidently declared that she was the Avatar. But while I thought it would be nice for her to end up with Asami, because why would the Avatar, a soul that is not constrained by the bounds of gender, be limited in their sexual orientation, I didn’t actually expect it to happen. Because years of TV watching had taught me otherwise. But then something magical happened, and it actually became canon. Korra and Asami did have feelings for each other after all. And now I get to read a graphic novel trilogy where my favourite Avatar works out her sexual identity while I slowly figure out my own. 

4. Ianto Jones (Torchwood) 

Ianto was always my favourite character when I first watched this series when it first premiered all those many years ago, but it’s only upon a recent rewatch that I realised just how sexually fluid that entire cast of characters was. (Not that I’d expect anything less from a show where Jack Harkness is the lead. But still, this is insane for a show that premiered in the early 00′s.) Nevertheless, there’s something about Ianto Jones in particular that made him my firm favourite early on. I think it has something to do, with the reason why I love him so much now: he has a clear emotional journey from when he loses his girlfriend at the beginning of the series, to being attracted to, and later falling for, Jack. There’s something simple and quite nuanced about the way he explains to his sister that it isn’t all men he’s attracted to (or rather, loves), but rather, just Jack. 

3. Henry “Monty” Montague (Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue)

Monty is the teenage personification of a walking bisexual disaster, and I couldn’t love him more. He’s smart, but selfish, sensitive, but quite rude. Not to mention, privileged, entitled, and utterly insensitive to the plight of anyone else but himself. He’s a complete flirt, but also in love with his best friend. All of this combines to a fantastic journey of growth and self-discovery that sees him transcend his previous tendencies and grow to be a better person who is worthy of the boy he loves. Oh, and the most impressive part? He’s the bisexual protagonist of a historical YA novel, written by a bisexual author who took pains to ensure that everything was guided by modern sensibilities even though it is set at a time when attitudes toward the LGBTQIA community were less than friendly. (Also the sequel features Monty’s most likely asexual sister who might be romanced by a lady pirate captain, as she attempts to attend medical school like she so deserves. I don’t know how I’m supposed to just sit around and wait.)  

2. b) John Constantine (Legends of Tomorrow, Hellblazer) 

John is technically my first favourite bisexual character ever, because I loved him before I even knew what that label was, or that I identify as it. Instead, I just read the Hellblazer comics as they followed the adventures of my favourite smart-talking, hard-smoking, trenchcoat-wearing occult detective. (The only thing I love more than a detective is one that uses magic. See also: Harry Dresden, and Skulduggery Pleasant. I have a type.) But then as talk of the TV series came about, I saw somewhere that he was bi and lost my shit a little (In retrospect, it feels silly that it took me as long as I did to figure myself out). Of course, the NBC show did not honour that aspect of his identity, which makes me only gladder that he’s going to be a regular on Legends of Tomorrow next season because Matt Ryan was born to play him. 

2. a) Rosa Diaz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine)

How do I love Rosa Diaz? Let me count the ways. She’s a fantastic friend and amazing co-worker who has her colleagues’ backs even when they’re at their most stubborn and uncooperative. Stephanie Beatriz’s performance over these last five seasons has imbued her with a growing sense of warmth under that tough demeanour that only emphasises how much she’s grown as a character. (And the journey we’ve gotten to see her go on.) But beyond being a hilarious character with many levels who constantly kicks ass and is also the most relatable, she got to have a coming out arc that has been sensitively crafted, after Beatriz herself requested her own real-life orientation be reflected on screen. It’s a perfect example of how a character’s sexual identity can inform and enrichen their relationships without detracting from who they are. And I couldn’t be more grateful for it.

1. Robert Sugden (Emmerdale)

Look, I love Robert, but I never actually expected him to top this list. But then I gave it some more thought watched Aaron’s reunion speech, and I realised that it actually makes sense that he would. He’s a smart, funny, at times self-serving and flawed character who’s been through a lot. But somewhere along the way, he’s managed to grow and go on a journey of self-acceptance and find love and happiness and a family. (In some ways he’s a grown up Monty.) Like many of the characters on this list, he’s also got layers. He’s schemed and lied and cheated his way in and out of trouble several times over, but that’s only made him a more fun character to watch. (At least for me.) This is of course in part to Ryan Hawley’s performances, which has had to sell various facets of Robert’s personality, while retaining all the things it is that we love about him. 

Also, for me personally, as someone who regularly writes fic about this character, and from this character’s point of view, I feel a bit more of a personal connection to him. I’ve used his feelings and in-show experiences as a launching pad for my own writing and as an outlet to explore whatever it is I might be feeling or headcanoning in the moment. It’s helped me grow as a writer and a person, and sometimes what’s what you need your favourite characters to do for you. No matter which stage of your life you may be in.

Top 5 RTD Multiparters

5. The Stolen Planet/Journey's End: This episode is so indulgent, and I love it to bits. I would liken the rest of the episodes in this list to a hearty meal, but this is a decadent dessert. It is pure fanservice and I eat it with a spoon. My favorite companions all back? Check. Awesome cameos by beloved characters from the spinoffs? Check. Funny callbacks? Check. Everyone gets to showcase why they're incredible? Check. Killer one-liners? Check. If only RTD hadn't done Donna dirty. Also, why didn't Martha and Mickey join Torchwood?! C'mon. "Tell the Doctor that he chose his companions well." Yes, he most certainly did.

4. Aliens in London/World War Three: God this episode is fun. And what an amazing cast. Harriet and Margaret are GEMS. Also the Doctor owes Mickey about a thousand apologies. Mickey is a superstar. Manages to compile piles of information about the Doctor. Faithfully watches street corners waiting for Rose to come back. He's loyal, brave and a freaking genius. Mickey Smith is the man. Also Jackie is number one mom. Yes she also did Mickey dirty, but she SLAPPED THE DOCTOR. She slapped the oncoming storm. I love Jackie Tyler so much. The characters make this storyline, but the plot it also really great. It's clever and well paced. The whole thing is oodles and oodles of fun. "Prove it, stitch this mate." I adore you Jackie Tyler.

3. Utopia/Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords: I love Donna, but can you imagine season four with Martha, Jack and Ten as the team? Wow. The chemistry of this trio is in-freaking-credible. This is the storyline that keeps on giving and every moment is full of entertainment. There's a perfect balance of fun and humor compared to tension and dread. The Master is a brilliant villian and a delight to watch. The stakes are so high and we never lose sight of them. And the dialogue, this arc has such great dialogue, especially from the master. Except for that dumb demographic boxes comment. That was beyond stupid. But this finale beats all other finales for me because the characters sacrifice so much. They suffer for the world and they do so willingly. Martha chooses to undertake her pilgrimage. Jack surrenders his chance to escape. The Doctor bares the indignities inflicted upon him. They are tormented for a year, but they come out the other side with the world intact. They earn their happy ending. "It's like when you fancy someone and they don't even know you exist. You too huh?" He doesn't deserve you Martha, Jack.

2. Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks: I love every single thing about this story SO much. I love the mystery. I love the complex plot. I love the social commentary. I love Tallulah with 3 Ls and an H. I love the showcase of the best and worst of humanity. I love the capacity for change even within a creature as deplorable as a Dalek. I love Martha Jones. I loved her from her first episode, so clever and brave even under the worst of circumstances, saving the Doctor and saving the world. But this episode is where she truly comes into her own. She takes charge when the Doctor is with the Daleks, coming up with brilliant solutions and leading well in a crisis. She is brilliant, but so much more than that she is kind. Her empathy is her greatest strength and it is showcased so well here. Her friendship with Tallulah is beautiful, and I wanted more of it by the end. I also love how the Time Lord attribute given to the hybrids that saves the day isn't mercy or compassion, but curiosity. It's not that they abhor violence, but they demand to know why. They don't want to take orders but decide for themselves. That's VERY the Doctor. Free Will saves the day is hardly a brand new idea, but damn it plays out so well here. Lazlo is a gem, and his romance with Tallulah is precious. I do wish the hybrids had survived and been allowed to start a civilization on a new world, but you can't have everything in life. "It plays music. What's the point of that? Oh, with music, you can dance to it. Sing with it. Fall in love to it. Unless you're a Dalek, of course. Then it’s just noise."

1. The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances: This episode was when I fell in love with Doctor Who. Was it because of the charming Captain Jack played by the fantastic John Barrowman? Was it because of the amazing anti-war pro-welfare message? Was it because of the incredible chemistry between Jack, Rose and Nine? Was it because of the fascinating storyline that kept you hanging onto the edge of your seat? Was it because of all the amazing one-liners? I mean yeah, all of those things, but most of all it's because of Nancy. Because the world is cruel and so unkind, but Nancy's not. Nancy cares for the children even after losing her own. Nancy braves the horror and the danger. Even when she has no hope. Even in the pit of despair. Life has been so unkind to Nancy, but she never lets it make her unkind. When faced with monsters she sings to them. Soldiers are useless and only worsen the situation. It's Nancy that saves the whole world with just a single hug. The philosophy behind this episode is so good and it bleeds through in every interaction. There's a banana grove where a weapons factory used to be. A screwdriver is more valuable than a gun. Forgiveness is more persuasive than force. It's all so beautiful. Even the most bitter misanthrope couldn't help but fall a little bit in live with humanity after seeing this. I should know. "Everybody lives! Just this once Rose, everybody lives!"

Somehow, because I’ve been basically working non-stop the last few days, I managed to forget that it was gonna be THIS episode until the title card came up and I literally gasped.

Let’s see if they actually acknowledge that it was a planned protest, not just her being tired one day, since that’s the nicer version. Ugh. Awww the TARDIS is just as cooperative as usual. “DON’T EVER TELL ANYONE I LENT HIM A MOBILE PHONE.” I want to hear that story. Oh no. Oh no oh NO OHH NO. Oh GOOD THEY’RE BEING REAL ABOUT THE STATE OF THE COUNTRY. BUT ALSO, THEM BEING REAL MAKES ME UPSET. Oh Emmett Till. CHRIS CHIBNALL. ACKNOWLEDGING RACE IN HIS RUN. LIKE EVERYTHING I WANTED FROM MARTHA AND DIDN’T GET (beyond like 5 lines in Human Nature) AND SORT OF GOT WITH BILL BUT WANTED MORE OF. CHIBNALL. I LOVE YOU FOR DOING THIS DURING YOUR RUN.

He looks sooooo familiar... Dude’s picked the wrong Time Lord. She has a lot of experience with Vortex Manipulators.

Figured it out, he was in So Undercover, that movie Miley Cyrus was in. I watched it one night when I was bored and couldn’t sleep. It was... ok.

I just spent pretty much the entire commercial break explaining cell phones in Doctor Who to my dad since he was like “But the phone would work just as well for Frank as Elvis in 1955 without a mobile network.” He says the Universal Roaming is just a way to save the writers, and I’m like yes but also they had to fit cellphones into the show somehow when it was revived, so that’s what they did.

“Education makes you unstoppable.” OH. ROSA AND YAS BONDING. I LOVE IT. SO MUCH. I love the representation in this season. All the whiney racist fanboys finally get to identify with someone just like them.

Ok. So if you guessed “Hope will cry when Rosa sits down” then DING DING DING you’re a winner in the “When Will Hope Cry?” Game!

Once we got the chorus of Rise Up I just could not handle it. The tears streamed down. The little tiny hint of a smile? Oh god. And then the footage of her in 1999. And then the asteroid. Oh my god.

That was so good. I am so happy.

I think I’ve only ever cried over one other Doctor Who episode (Waters of Mars, during the montage of the water coming through the cracks and that one lady watched a video of her daughters as she waited to be taken over by the waters. That made me let out a tear or two.) so Malorie Blackman, good job. Good job. You got me to have tears streaming down my face. For the first time while watching Doctor Who.

That was so amazing.

Update: About 20 minutes later, it hit me. There were no aliens in this episode at all. Just horrible humans. I almost hate to compare it, but Chibnall did write it, it’s like Torchwood’s Countrycide, but more realistic. Because instead of cannibals, it’s racists. Humans were the horrible monsters the Doctor had to defeat. And the Doctor didn’t even defeat them, Rosa was the one who fought.

I’m still emotional.

i finished gilmore girls + year in the life and now i'm weirdly sad and i feel like everyone i know has died and i've never been so attached to a tv show before and i just need to vent about a lot of things and I only ever watched it because o you nora so thANKS i guess. also, what should i watch next to fill the void in my heart?

god i would die so hard for gilmore girls….. ok hmm watch buffy the vampire slayer if you haven’t bc it’s great and it’s another one of those shows where you get too attached to the characters. otherwise there’s a show on amazon that’s also made by amy sherman-palladino called the marvellous mrs maisel and it’s kind of the best?? only 8 episodes though but still

otherwise uhh veronica mars is good and doesn’t get enough praise tbh i feel like people all collectively forgot about it which is a shame. there’s also a show called parenthood that’s a bit too dramatic for me at times but it’s still really good and it’s got lauren graham (y’know, lorelai) and her irl bf plays her brother (lol) and ngl i’m more invested in all the actors than the show but it’s good. also there’s pre-black panther michael b jordan which is Wild

ALSO i will continue recommending hannibal to literally everyone bc it might be the best series ever made, but i gotta warn you it’s very fucked up so don’t watch it if you don’t like blood or uhh cannibalism

my main blog is x-filer so it’s no surprise i would also DIE for the x-files and i know it’s long but time flies when you watch it tbh it’s quality television and i’m a sucker for the 90s. another great sci-fi show is torchwood which is technically a doctor who spinoff but imo it’s better than doctor who and also like everyone in it is Not Straight it’s a good time

and lastly if u want more comedy series there’s brooklyn 99, one day at a time (the netflix reboot), the good place, faking it (which got cancelled but it’s still valid), bunheads (which got cancelled too after only one season but that’s also by amy sherman-palladino and it’s literally like a gilmore girls 2.0 even with a lot of the same cast) andddd thats it i think anyway have fun
