Platonic Soulmates AU pt2
Prev || Next
"Marco finally!” Thatch whined, such a drama queen, "What took you so long?"
"Ace took another mission this morning yoi," Marco sighed, "had to make sure he took his meds with him this time."
Thatch became serious at this, the kid is really worrying his older brothers.
"This is the third one this month."
"Yeah."
"And you weren't able to get anything out of him?"
"No, you?”
"Nothing," he sighed "He rarely comes to the kitchen anymore, doesn't raid the pantry or join me & Haruta for our latest pranks."
"I can't believe I'm not grateful for that yoi, but the kid is rarely at game nights except when Deuce drags him there and when I see him he is either alone or with Kotatsu." Marco rubbed his face, exhausted just by thinking about it "and he is avoiding me now, he knows he should have gotten his new med supply from me and he's avoiding me, god at this point I just hope he takes them even if he won't talk."
"Dammit!” Thatch yelled covering his face "What happened!? What did we do!? Why did he just start hiding our Jolly Roger? How did we hurt him? It has been going on for more than a month and it's getting worse!”
"Thatch calm down yoi," He's tired, they're both tired but-"I know you're worried, we both are but shouting won't solve this, you know Deuce said it's not us and that it's a bad time for Ace."
"I know!" Thatch took a deep breath "...I know Marco, but what can we do now? We didn't pry and waited like he said but Ace isn't getting better!"
"Yeah I know yoi, honestly I don't think even he thought it would continue for this long that's why I talked to him, he said that he'll try one more time when Ace returns, if it doesn't work he'll involve us."
"...."
"What?"
"You couldn't have led with that?"

Loosely inspired by this idea by @scoops-aboy86 but AU where you have a soulmark of an animal that represents your soulmate. People can have multiples, depending on if it's a romantic, platonic, or familial soulmate, and Steve is one of the lucky ones that has all three.
He doesn't know why they're crows, of all things (won't learn until later that it's because all three of his soulmates like shiny things and love to heckle him, lovingly of course). They hop around on his skin, sitting across his collar bones like a power line, nesting down in the shell of his ear.
The unique thing about the soulmarks, is the first time you touch your soulmate, your animals swap. It's only temporary, with them swapping again at the second touch, but it's a way to signify when you've found your match.
He realizes that Dustin is one of his matches during the season 2 mess, when he grabs Dustin to pull him from danger and later finds a fancy bird nesting with his crows. It has an orange face and a green body, and is incredibly vain. When he swaps back Dustin shows him the other one - this time yellow with a peach face and blue tail - and tells Steve that they're love birds. Steve thinks it's fitting, not just for himself, but for Suzie as well.
Robin happens during the Russians. Their hands brush where they're tied behind them and next thing Steve knows there's a fish swimming across his thigh, his crows hopping along after it, and he swears to do everything he can to get her out safely. It's not until the bathroom confession that he learns she's his platonic match, and he won't lie, he feels a little sad as he watches his betta swim up to another fish.
"A pinktail triggerfish," Robin explains, "They're protective and dangerous."
Steve smiles as he holds Robin's hand. "Can't wait to meet the girl that represents."
His swap with Eddie happens at the boat house, but Steve doesn't even realize it until after he's back home for the night and changing. There's a golden retriever bounding across his chest, chasing after the crows that are- playing with it. They're flying around it and egging it on, and he only worries a little until later, when he finds the dog sprawled out, relaxed even as the crows tug on its ears. It makes him happy to see the patience and joy the dog exudes, clearly at home with his birds.
They're walking through the upside down when Eddie holds out a hand and gives a hesitant "I uh, think this is yours." On the back of his hand is Steve's crow, and Steve smiles at the sight of it.
"Yeah, it is," Steve says. He brushes their hands together and the animals swap again. Steve watches as a different dog - a rottweiler, maybe - bounds up to the retriever on Eddie's hand and the dogs start to tussle playfully. He glances at his own hand to find his crows tumbling over each other, happy to be reunited.
"So, Jeff is my platonic, if you, uh-" Eddie starts, but Steve knows there's more important things to worry about right now. Even though all Steve wants is to know if Eddie wants Steve the way he wants Eddie.
"After," he cuts in as he takes Eddie's hand, the smallest relief he can offer right now. "We can talk after."

Thinking of Steddie Soulmates where you feel every pain your soulmate feels.
Thinking of little Steve feeling every backhand and punch from Eddie’s dad.
Thinking of little Eddie feeling Steve break his arm and the pain being so much worse because his parents refuse to take him to the hospital until the school gets involved.
Thinking of Eddie finally moving in with Wayne and sure, the paternal beating are done, but now he’s just a small town Freak that’s constantly targeted.
Thinking of Eddie and Steve in their Sophomore/Freshman years respectively, not knowing who the other is outside of rumors and (unknowingly) their shared pain.
Thinking of Eddie finally escaping pain, the bullying turning to mainly verbal shit.
Only to be thrust right back into pain because his soulmates a walking hazard.
Thinking of Eddie having no idea what’s going on when he suddenly feels like one giant bruise after Steve’s beat up by Jonathan. Eddie watching Steve fall from grace in his Junior year and not connecting the dots.
Billy coming along and smashing a fucking plate over Steve’s head while Eddie’s peacefully sleeping. Eddie jolting awake with a shout because /holy fucking shit ow—/
Neither of them connecting the dots.
Then Steve graduates, and Eddie’s held back. And the pain subsides for a bit.
And then fuck all happens in Starcourt and Eddie literally feels like he’s dying and Jesus H. Christ is his soulmate /ok/??? Like they are getting seriously fucked up.
And then that recedes and it ok for a while— Eddie will still get killer pains that seem to circulate in his chest and head, but that’s to be expected with whatever tf his poor soulmate is going through year after year.
And then the fuckery of March 1986 happens and Chrissy Cunningham is dead in his trailer— his home— and he’s wanted for fucking murder and hiding in Rick’s dingy ass boat house—
And then he’s shoving none other than Steve Harrington up against a wall with a broken bottle helps to his throat. Eddie’s so piped on adrenaline he barely feels the sting in his back, but he does feel the zing of pressure on his throat and ok /ow—/
And he’s staring at Steve Harrington, who looks kinda terrified and so pretty and Eddie’s holding a bottle to his throat and is that Dustin?—
And—
And holy shit.
Eddie’s eyes widen at the same time as Steve’s and the realization hits them both at once.

Steddie soulmate au where your soulmate's favorite song constantly plays in your head.
How long til Steve's like "why is there always screaming?"
Eddie stomping on tables doing his little non-conformist dance with, like, Springsteen's I'm on Fire on loop in his brain.
Steve's concussions, the headaches, the chaos. He's alone in the dark, trying to sound out what the screams are saying to distract himself from the pain.
Eddie's got The Beachboys and ABBA and Springsteen cassettes hidden under his mattress because once you're a little boy who wasn't loved, even reformed under the unconditional love of Wayne Munson, you don't take love for granted at all, and he'll be damned if he's not gunna know everything about anything his soulmate loved.
Steve keeping little pencil mark tallies on the corner of his desk at home for how many times a week the song in his head changes.
An Iron Maiden song Eddie loved for a day catches for some reason, and he hears it back in his own head for the next two weeks and he's fucking giddy with it.
Steve fixated, gets really good at deciphering the screams, knows the full lyrics of every song by the end of the first night he hears them. Keeps him company at home.
Once, Eddie's picking Dustin up from Steve's. Steve waits out on the driveway with Dustin, talking shit and fucking off, Eddie pulls up. When Dustin climbs in, he shuts the door, windows are down, Steve pokes his head in to acknowledge Eddie, hears the song. It's been on loop in his head for three days. He knows every word. They don't always catch for that long. He looks up at Eddie. Blinks.
Eddie's caught for a second, by the look on Steve's face. Dustin's shuffling through his bag, looking for a miniature he wants to show Eddie, but Steve's lips quirk up a little. And then he says, "doubt sunk itself in you, it's teeth and talons through, you're living catch two two, deluding."
Steve watches Eddie's eyes flick to his radio, then back to Steve.
"This ones lasted a few days?" Steve says quietly.
Eddie's eyes drop to Dustin, then back up to Steve. He grins. "Modern witchhunt, mass hysteria. Fits, huh?"
"Yeah," Steve smiles. "Little bit."
Dustin pulls out his figure, starts rambling to Eddie, pauses, nods and says "later, Steve," before he's on about his figure again, talking a mile a minute.
Eddie laughs. He leans over the console. Grins innocently at Steve. He taps his temple. "We'll talk about why this caught you later, big boy."
Steve's warm as he watches the van full off. The song in his head doesn't change for another two weeks.

Wrong Twice Over
Summary: Eddie adopts Dustin immediately because he's mentioned in his soulmate words.Once he hears them though, he just wishes he hadn't discounted someones likelihood of being his soulmate and needs to make it right.
~
Eddie had never told Dustin but from the time the kid had introduced himself, he’d had a place in Eddie’s life. He was mostly thankful that the brat liked DnD so keeping him around wasn’t a hardship at all.
The reason for that were the six words on his knee, the first words Eddie’s soulmate would ever say to him, that mentioned Dustin specifically. Somehow the kid was a connection to them and he didn’t intend to let that pass.
With Lucas and Mike, he’d breathed a sigh of a relief when neither of them said the words, though he definitely hadn’t given them the chance to do so and make sense. It was just better that whomever his soulmate was wasn’t a child.
So far only a week into the new school year had passed, and while Dustin had pointed out a couple of other seniors as people who’d help him, neither of them seemed likely to care if the kid said something right or wrong.
The last person in what Eddie thought was a reasonable age range to be his soulmate was too absurd to even consider as being it: King Steve Harrington himself.
There was no chance that someone like that could be anything to him at all, even if Dustin spoke as if he was a hero.
With those thoughts in mind, Eddie had no worries when greeting his unexpected visitor with, “Well if it isn’t the king coming with threats over something.”
Steve had looked like he actually could have threats given he was holding a few pages of notes out and had gotten out of his car looking like he was on a mission.
Once the words were said though he froze, staring at Eddie and dropping the pages on the ground before seeming heartbroken and turning away. “Well that’s Dustin wrong twice over.” Was all that was said as he vanished back to his car and sped away again.
Now Eddie was frozen, knowing the sentence too well and stunned. He’d expected it to be a joke, or to be something shared flirtatiously, but instead the soulmate words he’d cherished had been hurt and upset. It broke something in him to know he’d somehow been around his soulmate in school for so long yet their first actual interaction had been so negative in the end.
Resolving to figure out how to apologise he picked the pages up and looking them over only felt worse. There were lists and lists on them, things that the new members of Hellfire would struggle with facing in a campaign as well as vague or scribbled out reasons why he should avoid them.
It looked like Steve might’ve even asked someone for help with the list since there were three handwriting styles on the page, some giving ideas for what could be done instead of the things listed, others changing his explanations for why they needed avoiding.
He didn’t know what Dustin had been wrong about, but Eddie definitely felt like he’d been wrong multiple times over about Steve and anything he’d been doing.
At least he knew for certain that he had to make it right again.
~
“Dustin! Need your help!” Eddie called, late to get to the Hellfire table for lunch and focused on the first thing he hoped could be done.
“Better find someone else to help then.” Dustin replied, turning and glaring at him venomously.
Mike also glared, while the rest of the table looked between them in confusion. “Yeah, you don’t do that shit and then ask for favours.”
Eddie looked between them, glancing around to see Lucas staring, expression controlled, where he sat with the basketball team and hopefuls wanting to try out. “I want to apologise. That’s what I’m asking for your help with.” He pulled out the letter he’d written, holding it towards the younger students.
“Why? Because you realised that high school isn’t everything even though you were preaching that all last week?” Dustin snapped. “He literally wanted me to be right. Said he’d try to help when Mike worried at movie night and believed that you’d be cool. We all did. So fuck you, whatever apology you’ve got I’m checking first.”
A throat was cleared behind him before Eddie could reply. “As will I, and all of you better hope it’s good enough.” A band student stood there, arms crossed and eyes hard as she looked over Corroded Coffin. “You spend your life making big statements and gestures so maybe try that this time. I’m taking this now.” She plucked the pages from his hands
“Robin! I need to check that!” Dustin protested, standing to follow her.
Mike rolled his eyes as they both walked away. “She means it. If there’s someone going to raise hell for Steve it’s Buckley and then Dustin. But if that was a letter for him then it’ll get to him.”
“An apology and a thank you. He dropped a list I think he wanted to talk to me about when he came round. I’m glad I have it and wish I hadn’t spoken as I did, though I thought it was just teasing.” Eddie explained, sitting down at the table as he didn’t feel the need for a speech that day.
“What do we have to do with whatever happened?” Gareth asked, looking at the freshman curiously.
Mike sighed as if it was obvious. “Band students sometimes work with the drama kids, so if she talks to the drama teacher where are we going to play? Though I think Nancy might have to get involved to manage that so I will try to avoid it happening.”
“She’d go after a club you’re part of?” Jeff asked, sceptical.
“The party sticks together. We’d accept it if Dustin decides not enough is done.” Lucas says coming over to the table, now looking amused and a glance back to the basketball group showed Robin and Dustin reading over the pages and debating just behind them. “But it sounds like you’ve made a good enough start. Just need to put some actions behind whatever you’ve written.”
The older students exchanged looks, “What party? You mean like in a campaign?”
“Close enough.” The younger pair agreed.
For the rest of lunch conversation moved back to various classes and goals for the year, but Eddie was watching where Dustin and Robin had seemingly come to a conclusion, his apology getting folded into Robin’s pocket.
~
Steve didn’t make an attempt to reach out to Eddie after getting the letter. Dustin calmed down now his initial annoyance had passed, but it was clear not everything had been forgiven.
Soulmates were meant to be perfect for each other, so despite all the ideas based on what Eddie had known of Steve that meant he acted differently, he tried to focus on things he wanted to do to apologise.
Making a character in a campaign would only work if it was one where they got Steve into the school to play, so that couldn’t happen immediately. Writing a song would also only work if Steve allowed it too, and accepted an invitation to the Hideout to see it performed, since Eddie was never going to risk arrest by playing it outside the mansion in Loch Nora.
“Time’s ticking, Munson. Are you going to make a move?” Buckley asked, waiting at his locker when a couple of weeks had passed since he’d sent the apology.
He turned, smiling at her, “Wish I could. Don’t know where to find him and am a little concerned over getting the wrath of his parents if I just turned up on his doorstep to beg forgiveness.”
“We work at Family Video. He gets the early shift during the week so either skip school to see him or come in on the weekend.” She huffed as if this was something he should’ve know. “And those assholes are never in town. I could move in and they’d never realise.”
“Lonely life.” He commented before thinking about it and looking shrewdly at her, “How often do you hang out at his and would you mind if I crashed an evening?”
Robin smirked at him, “Now you’re getting it. Talk to us instead of stewing in that head of yours. This week I’ll be there Tuesday night and Thursday. Entire party will be there on Friday so avoid it unless you know you’re a hundred percent serious over Steve, not just your soulmate.”
“Tuesday night, then. I’ll bring pizza and something sugary.” He decided.
She nodded in allowance of that but, as she turned to leave, added “And something in case he has a migraine. I heard weed can help.”
~
Steve held the door open but didn’t move out of the way of it as he stared at Eddie. “Hi, Munson, erm, are you okay?”
“Fantastic. A birdie told me you’re hanging out tonight and I offered to bring pizza so I could hopefully apologise in person?” Eddie grinned hopefully, but knew his eyes showed the internal wince when he mentioned their last interaction.
“Okay, um, come in. I did get your letter, you know. You don’t need to do anything more.” He replied, stepping back, still looking uncomfortable.
Eddie clicked his tongue, “I have to argue with you there, Harrington. I definitely need to do more, not because we’re soulmates but because you’re apparently the sweetest guy around who keeps lists of things a bunch of kids I can’t figure out your connection to need to avoid in a game it sounds like you never play. I judged you for someone I should have seen you no longer were and that need plenty of pizza apologies.”
“We, basically all of us have similar things we need to avoid.” Steve muttered, but led the way through to his living room where Robin was stretched out over one sofa.
“Munson, come in! Tell us about your day.” She called, gesturing around the room as if it was her own.
He laughed, collapsing onto the other sofa, “What do you want to know?”
“What the shitheads got up to and if they’re planning any chaos for us.” She answered easily.
Steve shook his head, moving to sit on Robin’s sofa, easily accepting it when her feet were placed in his lap. “They’re always planning chaos, if they’re not in deadly situations.”
With that the conversation flowed easily between them and Eddie began to hope that even if he’d messed up meeting his soulmate they could become something wonderful with time, and apparently, with Robin there too. He didn’t need to see Steve with her for long to know there wouldn’t be any separating those friends.
A rocky beginning can still become a great story.

TW for internalized homophobia and related bad decisions
Steve is 12 and he thinks about finding his soulmate all the time.
You're supposed to find them through touch; your life together will flash in front of your eyes. They're rare, though, soulmates. So rare that most people never find theirs. So rare that some people say they're made up.
Steve wants to be one of the lucky few. He wants it to be a true, unbreakable bond, a love he gets to have forever.
He wonders if he'll find his soulmate at school. He's popular, he thinks. Tommy would say they were popular. But Tommy's definition of popular mostly has to do with the number of kids he can get away with being mean to, and that's not really Steve's deal. Tommy is like a prey animal, the way he can find weaknesses.
There's a new boy at school. Steve doesn't know his name, but they have English together. He's too thin, with huge brown eyes, and all his clothes are too big. His head's been inexpertly shaved and he never looks anybody in the eye. It's only a matter of time before he catches Tommy's interest, and Steve wishes he could stop it somehow, but he's never been good at going against Tommy.
The day comes, of course. They're standing in the hall, the new boy walking towards them, head down, as always. Tommy nudges Steve says, "What a loser."
And Steve shrugs, starts to ask Tommy about football, if the Colts can make the Super Bowl, but the boy is nearing and Tommy is cackling.
"Watch this." Tommy sticks his foot out.
The boy doesn't react fast enough. He falls forward with a bitten off yelp, and Steve moves without really thinking, only knows he can't stand to see him fall. He catches the new kid beneath his armpits, Steve's thumbs brushing the soft skin his arms.
The world around him falls away at the touch.
---
He's sitting on the floor in the band room, Eddie--the boy's name is Eddie--next to him. Eddie's hair is a little longer and Steve's in a green polo he doesn't recognize, and he's never been in the band room in his life. They're leaning into each other and laughing and Eddie's so beautiful.
---
They're in the woods--Skull Rock, Steve thinks. Eddie's hair is curled and frizzed around his chin, and he's laughing, his cheeks pink, his dimples prominent. He tries to pull his hair in front of his face, but it's not long enough yet to reach. Steve is overwhelmed, wants to kiss him so bad. He's never had to wait to kiss someone, or been unsure, or--
He wants to kiss Eddie.
So, he does.
It's hard, desperate, not the first kiss Steve expected, but then they've been waiting for so long.
---
Steve stands in the hallway of Hawkins High. He's wearing a striped, beige short-sleeved polo, and flirting with Nancy Wheeler.
He likes Nancy, she's pretty and smart and fun. And it's easy. He can hold her hand. Can introduce her to his parents. Can take her on dates and kiss her in public.
She bats her big blue eyes at him, and he can't help but kiss her.
He pulls away gently, brushing his thumb against her cheek, and when he looks down the hall, Eddie is there, frozen. His mouth is wide, his eyes glassy.
Steve thinks the way his heart stutters must be what dying feels like.
---
He's sitting on his diving board, facing away from the pool. He smokes a cigarette and there's a bat studded with nails at his feet, what the fuck. Music thuds, shrieks and laughter seep into the cool night air.
He should be playing the gracious host. He should be having a good time. Instead, his eyes search the woods and he taps another smoke out of the pack.
"Harrington?" The voice makes him jump, hand flexing around the bat handle. "It's freezing out. What are you doing?"
He recognizes the voice now, doesn't turn, doesn't respond, can't stand to see another person he let down; another person who could call him bullshit and be 100% correct.
"Do you not have a jacket? C'mon, man."
Something warm settles over his shoulders, and he inadvertently breathes in weed and leather and cedar. He squeezes his eyes shut, like that will make the comforting, familiar scent go away. He'll have to move to shrug off the jacket, though, which would mean acknowledging Eddie's presence.
"Can you at least say something, Harrington? You're freaking me out."
"I'm fine, Ed--Eddie." The nickname falls from his lips too easily. He doesn't miss how Eddie flinches.
His hair is long now, down to his shoulders, brittle looking in the cold. He's wearing a t-shirt and worn flannel, arms wrapped around his chest for warmth now that his jacket is draped over Steve's shoulders.
Steve is an idiot. He's such an idiot. Chasing after Nancy when Eddie is--
"I'm sorry," he says. He turns to face his soulmate, then. "I'm sorry about Nancy, I--"
Eddie jerks back like he's been hit. "Fuck you, Harrington," he snarls.
---
He sits in the back of an ambulance, eyes swollen shut, face throbbing. He's wearing a sailor suit for inexplicable reasons, which is almost more upsetting than the ambulance. He smells like puke and something toxically sweet.
A girl is with him, one he doesn't recognize, but he feels deeply, instinctively protective of her. He holds her shaking shoulders tight, tries to whisper comfort to her through his busted and bleeding mouth.
He's pretty sure he has a concussion.
"Steve!" Someone screams over the sounds of the EMTs and firefighters, of the building burning and collapsing behind them.
Eddie bursts through the gathered onlookers and past the ring of police cars enclosing them. He's falling into the ambulance before Steve has a chance to react.
"Sweetheart," Eddie sobs. He tries to cup Steve's face, but his fingers flutter around the damage. "Sweetheart, oh my god. I came as soon as I heard. Are you--what can I--"
Steve stares at him--his hair falling from its messy bun, his cutoff Metallica tee, concern and love leaking from those brown, brown eyes--and bursts into tears.
---
They sit on the roof of his house, sharing a joint back and forth. It's chilly, bordering on cold, winter just on the horizon. They're laughing, leaning into each other, and Steve is--he's happy. Elated. Could float away with it.
Robin--Robin-- is in the bathroom, or maybe in the kitchen for snacks, and it's just them for now. They're looking at each other, smiles wide, eyes bright.
They're taking it slow. Steve knows it's important, after what he did. They talked about it, his abandoning of Eddie for Nancy, chasing what his dad told him was normal and expected.
He doesn't want to cross any boundaries, wants to do this right. How Eddie deserves. But they're leaning into each other and they're smiling, and he's so in love. Intoxicated with it, lost.
In the end, he doesn't know who makes the first move, just that they're kissing and it's like coming home.
---
He's in a building, a shed or something. It's musty and dirty, smells like oil and gasoline and a building left closed up too long. Eddie's in his arms and he's talking through hiccuping sobs.
"I didn't save her, Steve. I didn't help. I just left her there! She was broken in pieces and I--I--"
Steve holds him close, tight, squeezes his eyes closed to stop his own tears from falling. He never wanted this for Eddie, never wanted him involved. Thought he could protect him from all of Hawkins's terrible things.
They aren't alone. Robin is there, coming up to hold Eddie too, plus a redheaded girl and curly haired boy he doesn't recognize.
"We'll figure this out, Eddie." The boy promises.
"We won't let anyone hurt you. We know you didn't murder Chrissy," the girl says.
---
Steve is in a world he doesn't understand, and Eddie is his arms. Eddie is in his arms, and there's blood everywhere. He's not awake, he's not--his heart beat is soft and slow, too slow, and his breathing stutters, and Steve can't--
"Baby, stay with me." He begs as he runs across the dead and rotting landscape. "Eddie, please. Wake up, okay? Wake up for me. I need to--I need to know that you're alright."
Eddie stays limp in his arms.
"Please," he begs. "You can't leave me. We promised, remember? We promised we'd be together forever. The rest of our lives. Me and You. Our six little nuggets. You promised."
The portal back to Hawkins is less than a dozen feet away, he's so close. Eddie gasps to consciousness, but his eyes are still hazy.
"Hi, sweetheart," he mumbles.
"Hey, hi, you're doing so good. We're almost out, okay? We're almost out and we'll get you to the hospital."
Eddie reaches out a weak hand, touches the edge of Steve's jaw. "Love you, Stevie," he whispers. "Glad you were mine."
He goes still in Steve's hold.
---
The images come faster now--
A hospital room at Hawkins General, Eddie hooked to machines. Steve holds hands with an older man. They wait in terrified silence
Eddie propped in a bed, a bunch of kids around him, Steve and Robin at his side. His eyes keep sliding to Steve, like he's making sure Steve's real, that he's still there
Their bodies tangled together in a bedroom Steve doesn't recognize
Steve down on one knee in a marble room lit only by black and red candles, Eddie standing in front of him
Hand-in-hand on a cliffside overlooking the ocean. The Chief of Police, Jim Hopper, stands in front of them with tears in his eyes and a beaming smile on his face
In a big, green yard behind a cozy little house. A little boy with Eddie's eyes and curls riding on his shoulders. Eddie sprinting around with a tiny girl giggling after him, perfect imitation of the King Steve hair-do on her tiny head
In a park, surrounded by family and friends. Steve has a little bit of a paunch and wears glasses. Eddie's hair streams around his shoulders, going grey at the temples. There's a banner strung between trees proclaiming 'Happy 20th Steve and Eddie!' They're surrounded by everyone they love and it's perfect
---
The images flash too fast for Steve to catalog after that, seconds-long glimpses of a shared future, and then he's back in his body in the hallway of Hawkins Middle, still holding too tight onto Eddie's arms.
Eddie rears back, face pale and terrified, and Steve is too shocked to do anything but let him go.
Tommy's yelling, but Steve only has eyes for his soulmate, who scrambles to his feet and throws himself down the hall away from them.
"What the hell, Harrington? Why'd you catch him? That was about to be funny as hell! I bet he'd have broken his nose--you ruined it!"
Steve isn't listening. He's trying to hold on to the memories of their life together, the ones that are already fading.
The last thing he remembers is that, sometime in the not-too-distant future, he'll find his way to the band room, Eddie Munson, and the rest of their lives.

Are we gonna ignore the fact that Arcane basically just confirmed the existence of soulmates in their world with Jayce and Viktor’s whole “in every universe” thing? Who else do you headcanon as soulmates?

Platonic Soulmates AU pt3
Prev || Next
Two months after the New Year, the Moby Deck was moored on one of the captain’s favourite spots for relaxing in an effort to keep Ace with them for more than two days.
Who could have known that the whitebeards were so soft?
Deuce thought gratefully while trying to find Ace, he knows that this time he wouldn’t be in the crowd.
He’s truly grateful that Oyaji saw how special Ace is and that the crew was able to convince him to join.
The previous months were the happiest he has seen Ace look. And it helps that with Whitebeard it’s the safest Ace could be.
And with Ace’s eighteenth birthday, he thought it will only be better for his friend, however, he immediately isolated himself and started going on missions far from the Moby with no rhyme or reason.
He thought maybe he didn’t get Luffy as a soulmate or maybe life decided that Ace didn’t suffer enough and gave him no soulmate.
He wanted to give him some time to process it, If Ace went to this degree to get privacy to process it so be it, but he wasn’t getting better and he couldn’t corner him for a while but now is finally his chance to get through to him.
Finally, he found him on nearly the other side of the island in a secluded place.
“It has been hard to get a hold of you lately captain we’ve been worried.”
"...Sorry for worrying you."
“Alright, talk to me.” He started, sitting down next to him. “You know the deal, I listen, you talk and if it can be solved I'll help.”
“My Brother hates me” Ace stated as if it was a fact and not the most absurd thing he could say.
“What? Ace- No” Deuce chuckled uneasily, the fuck happened!? “Luffy could never hate you!”
“It’s not Luffy”
What? Does he mean from the crew, what happene-
“It’s Sabo.”
“...Ace- Sabo is-” He faltered, “You said he’s dead.”
“Yeah, I said-” He chuckled sorrowfully, a sound that should never ever be from Ace.
“I thought so,”  His hand shook slightly as he pushed his sleeve up to show his tattoo. “But his mark turned blue.”
“His S turned blue, and I can’t think of anything else that’d make him fake his death and not tell me- tell us for Eight years that he was alive except that he hates me.”
His hands were shaking when Deuce took it in his, worrying that he would hurt himself from how hard he was gripping his tatto.
“Ace, don’t you think you’re jumping to conclusions? There could be another reason it doesn’t have to be hating you!”
“What other reason could be?” He whispered. “It has been Eight years Deuce, It can’t be protecting us because no one on Dawn knows he's alive! He has been declared dead by his family and other than them no one would hide it from us!”
“...Maybe he needed to make everyone else think he’s dead? And- and when it’d be safe he’d tell you?” It was a weak idea and he knows it but Deuce can’t believe that someone who grew up with Ace could do that to him!
“They already declared him dead.” Ace’s voice was monotone as if trying to distance himself from what he was saying, “His family, the town, the kingdom everyone knew he was the one on the boat and his family tried to bury it. So there’s no one to protect us from.”
Deuce wants to cut in, but he knows the best he can do now is to give him a listening ear and support first and help second.
“It was my fault from the start.” Tears started falling and Ace didn’t bother wiping away.
“I thought I knew better, I thought if he was with his family he would be safe, he would be cared for, they could give him what I can’t, that sooner or later he would hate what became of his life and wish for his old one.”
“I let that trash influence me, I let my doubt and insecurities turn me against my brother, I decided not to go and save him, I was the reason he was alone.”
“So Why wouldn’t he hate me?”
“Ace-”
“And I know!” He heaved, “I know I deserve his hate!”
“But why!?, Why couldn’t he tell Luffy?!”
“Why couldn’t he just tell us he was alive and then leave? It was my fault! Not Luffy’s, Not Dadan’s or Makino or Gramp!”
“I could have lived with his hate I just wanted him to live.”
“Thinking that he was dead, living without him, I have felt less, like there’s this part of me- of my soul that died with him”
“And I-” He gulped, looking as if he was pained to admit what he’ll say next, “and I want know did he never, once in those years feel like that? That no matter what he does, that gap in his life could never be filled.”
“Did he ever turn around expecting me to be there? Did he ever feel that his back is unprotected because I wasn’t there?”
“Do I even have the right to wish that my absence from his life affected him as much as it did me?”
“I get why he wouldn’t tell me” He whispered, lowering his hat to cover his face, “but why, why would he not tell Luffy?”
Deuce squeezed Ace’s hand wanting- no, needing him to focus on what he’ll say and not on whatever is going on in his brain.
“Ace you didn’t deserve this,” He started slowly. “You were a kid who life loved to screw with, who did the best he can for those who loved, and if somehow your brother really blames you for anything then know he’s wrong”
Ace’s eyes widened and he opened his mouth no doubt to object and defend his brother.
“No hear me out, whatever happened you were ten, you had no control over any of it, you’re a good person, a great captain, who’s loyal to his family and a great brother and I doubt anyone who knew you for more than a week could hate you, there must be another reason, alright?”
A skeptical hum is all he got and he knows it’s the most he can get now.
Right now the best they could do is finding Sabo. The easiest way would be waiting for his birthday, surely seeing the mark will make him come to Ace or at least make himself easy to find.
“Alright, you know when his eighteenth birthday is? If it’s soon we shoul-”
“NO!” Ace yelled, grabbing his shoulders “No, I have to find him before he gets his marks!”
“What! why?”
“Because I need the truth from him before he discovers that he’s stuck with me and decides to sacrifice his freedom for me!”
“Ace-”
“Deuce, he knows me, I know him, even if he hates me Sabo is the kindest person to live, if he discovers that he’s soulbonded to me, he’d force himself to forgive me or reconnect or something!”
“This is why I have to find him before the next month, I need the truth and not whatever crap he would pull because he’s being kind!”
This is why he took missions non-stop? To find Sabo? Not because he was guilty?
Who’s he kidding it’s Ace it’s definitely both.
“Alright alright we will do it your way, we will find him before your birthday, BUT we need help you spent two months already randomly searching now we need an expert.”
“...Who is it Haruta?”
“No, Your Grandfather, hear me out, He’s a high-ranking marine He must have more connections to the civilian side than us, If your brother was a pirate we would have seen his bounty so he must be a civilian and I doubt that Whitebeard’s network would be focused on the civilian side let alone outside of the Grand Line, your Grandfather is our best shot at this”
“...You’re right.” Thankfully he looked convinced hopefully Garp would be able to help.
“and his connection with the revs could be useful too.”
Having found something to focus on other than his self-deprecating thoughts Ace looks better already, hopefully, Deuce’s faith in his brother is rewarded or he will make sure that Sabo won’t have a peaceful life ever again.
Seas what would his captain do without me? Can't believe he forgot such an important-
“DID YOU SAY THE REVS!?”
