Chapter Seven

Natasha Romanoff

“Can you ask Fury to send the list of psychologists ASAP?” Natasha asks Clint after Iskra’s fallen asleep. He nods, glancing at her curiously. “She woke up from a bad dream and was flapping her hands and rocking back and forth. There was a girl like that, back in the Red Room.” Natasha looks away, hiding her suddenly wet eyes. “She… she didn’t last long. Couldn’t understand why you would want to kill anyone, couldn’t lie to save her life, panicked when the routine was changed and rocked or flapped her hands when she was scared or nervous. And she hated loud noises and the textures and smells of a bunch of things.” Clint nods again, in understanding. “Yeah, I’ll text him. He knows people; we should have a list by breakfast.” He takes out his phone, tapping into it and opening his messages. “Thank you,” she says softly. He looks back up as the message sends, smiling. “Of course, Nat.”

As promised, Clint’s phone dings a few minutes into breakfast. He waits until they’ve all finished before opening the message, a smile flicking across his mouth. “He says they’re all female and are fluent or mostly fluent in Russian, to make Iskra more comfortable,” he explains. Iskra glances up at her name, eyes bright and curious. “Помните чернокожего мужчину в том офисе?” (Remember the black man in that office?) Natasha asks her. She nods. “Его зовут Фьюри. Он нашел список русскоязычных женщин называемых терапевтами, с которыми вы можете поговорить.,” (His name is Fury. He's found a list of Russian-speaking women called therapists that you can talk to) she explains. Iskra tips her head. “О чем?” (About what?) she says. Natasha shrugs. “Все, что вы хотите.” (Whatever you want.) She nods again, thoughtfully. “Ты будешь там?” (Will you be there?) she asks. “Если ты хочешь, чтобы я был там, я буду,” (If you want me there, I will be) Natasha replies, smiling. “Я делаю,” (I do) she answers seriously.

After breakfast, Natasha and Iskra go through the list and end up picking Azaliya Orlova, a smiling, black-haired woman with bright blue eyes. “Назначение в два дней,” (the appointment’s in two days) Natasha tells Iskra, pulling her closer when she bites her lip nervously. “Это будет порядке,” (it’ll be fine) Natasha reassures her. “Я буду там.” (I’ll be there.)

Two days later

Natasha pulls up to the office building and looks in the rearview mirror at Iskra in her seat. She’s tapping her thumb to the pads of her fingers, index finger to pinkie and back again, so quickly that her fingers are just a blur. “Hey,” she says softly, turning around and reaching for Iskra’s hand. She takes it, thumb going to Natasha’s pulse, and her other hand starts tapping on her knee to the beat of it. Her eyes close, lips pursing as she lets out a soft sigh. “Я готов,” (I’m ready) she says, reopening her eyes. Natasha nods, smiling, and gets out of the car, heading around the front of it to see if Iskra needs help. She hesitates at the distance from the floor of the car to the ground, then jumps, feet landing on the asphalt with a satisfying thump.

They head inside, Iskra clinging tight to Natasha’s hand. Behind two sets of automatic doors is a waiting room, warm and cozy, with several soft armchairs, a couple bean bags, pillows, and a shelf of kids’ toys. Iskra investigates the bean bags while Natasha walks up to the desk, reminding herself to act normal. “Hello, I’m here for Azaliya Orlova at 4:30,” she says politely, heart thumping. “With Iskra?” the secretary checks, tapping on her keyboard. “Yeah,” Natasha confirms and she nods. “Okay, I’ll tell her you’re here,” she replies, and Natasha returns to Iskra, who’s now playing with the bean bag, squishing it in her hands and putting it on her head. “Это так мягко,” (it’s so soft) she whispers to Natasha, giggling when the bean bag falls off.

Natasha watches her play for a couple minutes, until the sound of sneakers patters into the room. They both look up to see Azaliya Orlova, although her hair’s in a bun and she’s wearing different makeup. “Это она?” (Is that her?) Iskra asks, confused. Natasha nods, standing and pulling Iskra up. She hugs Natasha’s leg, peeking around it at Azaliya. “Здравствуйте,” (hello) she says, walking closer and holding out her hand to shake, which Natasha does. She kneels, smiling at Iskra. “Меня зовут Азалия,” (my name is Azaliya) she says. “Как тебя зовут?” (What’s your name?)

After a moment, Iskra comes out from behind Natasha’s leg, fingers tapping nervously. “Искра,” (Iskra) she mumbles, not looking at Azaliya. “Это красивое имя,” (that’s a beautiful name) Azaliya replies. “Хотите зайти в мой кабинет?” (Do you want to come into my office?)

Normally, it wouldn’t be optional, at least in the situations Natasha’s used to. But something about Azaliya says that if Iskra doesn’t want to, she doesn’t have to.

After another long moment, Iskra nods mutely.

Sorry for the Wall of Text but hey! List of Future Fics in the works? :D

Okay so... I've been working on SO MANY stories for a while now (plot bunnies drag me around from one to the next, through new stories, while I still work slowly on my current Ao3 fics), but decided to post a little here about everything (story wise) that's been going on with the fics being mainly worked on!

Plot Bunnies Currently Making Me Their Bitch:

MCU - No Title yet, but is going to be an absolute TITAN of a story and series spanning from around 2007 pre-Iron Man 1 to Secret Invasion, with a lot of changes and a lot of additions (including Timeline event changes, Infinity War being an actual 3 to 4 month long war instead of 24hrs, PIETRO SURVIVES without Clint and the kid dying, Ultron is gonna be a far more badass boss fight with a moment of Avengers going "...Why do I hear boss music?", a handful of characters are going to be added to spice things up) and so much more! OC is gonna be Nat's kid via Red Room science (made in a lab) which will go over more in the fic (also other DNA is Yelena's, however there will be ZERO Nat x Yelena here. it will be Platonic "this is my child so i will cut a bitch if anyone hurts them" sort of parental situation. Yelena tends to be Aro/Ace in my fics being written, majority of the time, though there is an idea for an Ace!Yelena and Kate fic i have in mind, but that's for another story) - (OC -intersex afab- x Wanda Maximoff, and a lot of background pairings) - Inspired by "Smells Like Teen Spirit" version by Malia J, "Set It All Free" sang by Scarlett Johansson, and "Can't Help Falling in Love" version by Haley Reinhart

MCU - No Title Yet, a possible series of oneshots jumping around of Venom!NonBinary!Reader, Yelena Belova, and Kate Bishop platonic besties spreading some chaos and even possibly accidentally helping couples get together - (Background Wanda x Natasha, Pietro x Steve, Sam x Bucky, Tony x Pepper, Carol x Maria Rambeau, Peter Parker x MJ, Maria Hill x Sif, Thor x Jane) - Inspired by "Oath" by Cher Lloyd ft Becky G, "Born This Way" by Lady Gaga, and "Raise Your Glass" by P!nk

MCU - Waking Wanda - a Dark started story intro that leads to OC being reborn as Wanda Maximoff (though doesn't get flashes of memories until a young child of around 5ish and it's only enough to sort of let me give a reason for character changes Wanda will have, also no "MCU knowledge"). Story will toe the line with Dark status every so often (Wanda has very little problem being an Antihero right off the bat when around Teenage and that carries on as she ages, and has no problem literally killing to protect, more so when it comes to protecting Pietro). Sort of a test story for Darker writings, but ultimately will have a happy ending because i'm a sucker for happy endings. Technically the OC is just a placebo spark for me to change Wanda up a little for a story idea, and the OC stuff itself means very little beyond those "sparks" to induce change which will butterfly effect over time. (Wanda Maximoff x Natasha Romanoff, with background Pietro x Sam, Steve x Bucky, etc, etc) - Story was inspired by "Vicious" by Halestorm, and "Sweet but Psycho" by Ava Max

MCU - No Title Yet, and a smaller fic (and closer to the MCU timeline of stuff, though still plenty of changes and yes, Pietro lives along with Clint and the kid here, too). Will also toe the line with Darker stuff like Waking Wanda will (i'm very fond of writing antiheroes lately...), and OC will have Animal Shapeshifting powers. OC is also a brother to Wanda and Pietro via triplets instead of twins. - (TransMale!OC x Natasha Romanoff, with background Wanda x Darcy and Pietro x Monica) - Story was inspired by "Insane" by Black Gryph0n and Baasik, and "Wrong Side of Heaven" by Five Finger Death Punch

MCU - No Title Yet, this story will be a fic that doesn't heavily dip into fighting battles at first like the other stories, and instead will be set where Reader will end up in the MCU and steps in where possible (healing ability and also has wings, though you can hide them into a scar on your back) to try to encourage change to bring a bit less pain and suffering to our Avengers. Wanda and Natasha end up dating Reader (triad poly) during Civil War era (bigger changes here, and yes, Reader saves Pietro, there is deff a pattern here for me, i think) after Reader sort of gets pulled in via sticking around after Lagos to heal any wounded (Wanda yeets Rumlow a little more viciously so it clears it just enough to only cause a little bit of roof damage) - Wanda x Natasha x Female Reader - Inspired by "If Today Was Your Last Day" by Nickelback, and "Soldier" by Gavin DeGraw

MCU - No Title Yet, possibly a small series of oneshots about Wanda and Reader being a Soft!Couple, but also has Wanda and Vision being besties, and Reader and Natasha being besties. Literally just a "feel good" series - Wanda x Female Reader (Reader and Nat being Platonic besties, while Wanda and Vision being Platonic besties) - Inspired by "You and Me" by Plain White T's, and "Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves

MCU - No Title Yet, set after Endgame. Natasha comes back via Steve's stone exchange, but she's not really healed from it. Scars, recovering from broken bones, and honestly feels lost. While Clint is dealing with Kate stuff (Yelena goes to help him at Natasha's request, and because she's become fond of him like an older brother as well), Natasha meets Southern!Reader who is a friend of Laura's, visiting from Texas (was also a Marine). Reader and Natasha are a bit awkward at first (Natasha because she's still recovering and unsteady from retiring, thus not really sure what she wants to do now, and Reader due to just being a shy awkward person who still doesn't really understand how people "people"). The two end up helping each other. Natasha helping Reader with moments of night terrors spawned from PTSD of war/battles against other humans and other skirmishes with Thanos' army during the blip era. Reader helps Natasha stop pushing herself so hard during her recovery (physical and mental), and start to stop and just breathe, along with the fear of a truly unknown future. - Natasha x Autistic!Female Reader - Inspired by "Stuck In a Moment You Can't Get Out Of" sang by Scarlet Johansson, "Rise Up" by Andra Day, "Shatter Me" by Lindsey Stirling ft Lzzy Hale, and "All I Know So Far" by P!nk

MCU - No Title Yet. IM SO WEAK for Vera Farminga that it's unreal (dare i say Wanda Maximoff levels)?! That held my existence hostage and spawned this one here, of Eleanor Bishop x Reader. Reader is gonna be Wanda and Pietro's slightly older sibling (Marvel can pry Pietro's survival from my cold, dead hands) and has powers much like Magneto of the X-Men movies, but also cannot be harmed by metal objects, and has a resistance (read: resistance, not immunity) to more extreme cold and hot temperatures, as well as the abilities extending to Vibranium.

Conjuring Universe - No Title Yet. read above about weakness, RIP. Anyway, Reader will be Ed's sister who portrays a masculine build/clothing (and yes, binder! inc history research of binders and what was common and uncommon in that time era). Will happen around the main 3 Conjuring movies, as well as dabbling in The Nun 2 post credits scene (and extended), and the Curse of La Llorona getting a lil bit of a rewrite.

Secret family

Pairing: Steve Rogers x fem!Reader, platonic!Bucky Barnes x Reader

Characters: Reader, Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes, OC daughters, Tony Stark, Natasha Romanoff, Clint Barton, Bruce Banner, Wanda Maximoff, Pietro Maximoff, Sam Wilson, Vision

Summary: You're Steve's wife and he hid you from SHIELD and the Avengers, because you have healing powers. When Steve got heavily injured from a mission, Bucky calls you, so you and your daughters visit the compound to heal Steve.

Word count: 2800+

Warnings: Injuries (mentioned), a little bit of angst but not really, fluff, Dad!Steve (if that's a warning)

A/N: Honestly my heart is breaking with this gif. Also it took me way too long to write this, because my stupid self accidentally deleted the story when I was halfway done.

You were currently at work, when you got a call from Bucky, your husbands best friend. A wave of relief washed over you. Steve and Bucky had been on a mission for the past few weeks and it was the first time you heard from them since you said goodbye to Steve.

A call was good. It meant they were back from the mission and you would see them again soon. You weren't surprised that Bucky called you instead of Steve, it was their agreement to keep you safe that they would take turns on calling you, so nobody would get suspicious.

You took your phone and answered the call with a smile.

"Hi Buck," you greeted happily.

"Hey Y/N," Bucky answered and paused. You could hear by his tone that something was wrong and your smile immediately fell.

"So umm" the brunette continued and stopped again. He sounded exhausted and worried.

"What's going on? Are you hurt? Talk to me," you urged and started chewing on your lip, something you always did when you were nervous or troubled.

"No I'm good. It's just.. Steve got hurt badly and he doesn't want you to know, but I figured that you would want to know. I kind of hoped that you would come to the compound and heal him. Only if you want to of course," Bucky explained hurriedly.

You took a deep breath and started planning in your head. You would need to leave work early and pick up the kids from the babysitter.

"I'll be there in 30 minutes tops. But I'll have to bring the kids, is that alright?" You asked, while you already cleaned your desk and started packing your bag.

"Yeah sure, I'll wait outside of the building to et you through security. See you," the soldier answered.

"See you. And please take care of yourself too," you ordered. You knew that if Steve was injured Bucky wouldn't be completely fine. They would always try and push each other out of harms way. You deeply admired their friendship, but sometimes it led to the boys making stupid irrational decisions.

"I promise," you heard Buckys sigh but you decided to ignore his unwillingness, so you just gave an agreeing hum and hung up.

You opened the door of your car and jumped out. You had parked you car in front of the compound. You closed the door and opened the door of the backseat. Your four-year old daughter Jamie looked up at you. She had a frown on her forehead and clutched her teddy to her chest. Jamie had always been a smart sensitive child and she knew something was wrong.

You undid her seat belt, lifted her out of her seat and placed her on the ground. You closed her door as well and walked around the car to open the other door. Your other daughter, Sarah, was only one year old and currently asleep.

You gently picked her up and adjusted her in your arms, so she sat on your left hip, secured by your arm. Sarah whimpered in her sleep and her tiny hand gripped your shirt. The other one was in her mouth.

"Shh" you hushed her and rubbed her back. She fussed for another few seconds, but then stilled again.

"Mommy? I'm scared," Jamie whispered as she walked up to you. Tears had gathered in her eyes.

You walked up to her and smiled reassuringly while pulling her into your side.

"It's alright, sweetheart. We're visiting Daddy and Uncle Bucky," you told her while you started walking towards the compound. You placed her hand on the back of Jamie's head and side hugged her slightly.

When you walked closer, you saw Bucky sitting on a bench in front of the entry. He had already spotted you and patiently waited for the three of you to come over.

"Hey," you smiled at Bucky. Jamie squealed in delight when she saw her uncle and ran over to him to jump into his arms.

The man caught her with ease and lifted her from the ground to bear hug her. He ruffled her blonde hair and chuckled.

"Hey there," Bucky grinned. His face was bruised and he had a busted lip. You walked up to him and you hugged, mindful of the two girls you both were carrying. You placed your free hand on Buckys chest after he had let you go and send your powers through him. His face and all other injuries disappeared in mere seconds.

"You shouldn't have," Bucky protested.

"Well I wanted to," you answered him and smiled gently.

"Where's Daddy?" Jamie asked and tugged on Buckys shirt impatiently.

"We'll go see him right now," the brunette said and then added towards you, "the team doesn't know you, they might me surprised, but I'm sure they'll love you. I'll introduce you first and then we'll see Steve"

"Okay sure," you shrugged. You were a bit nervous, but after everything Steve told you about his team, you were a little more confident.

Bucky led you inside of the compound and closed the door behind the two of you. Jamie pressed her face into Buckys shirt, clearly scared of the new invironment and the cool white walls.

"Hey Friday, please tell the team to gather in the common room!" Bucky ordered. You furrowed your brows and tried to figure out who he was talking to, when a female voice answered.

"Right away, Sargeant Barnes," she said and you jumped and looked around, searching for the person who spoke.

"Tony's AI," was the answer to your unspoken question.

Bucky led you through several hallways towards what you guessed was the common room.

"Steve is in the medical wing. They stabled him and they knocked him out with some medication, because he refused to sleep," Bucky told you while walking.

You came to an open room and heard voices inside. Jamie seemingly heard them too, because she pushed herself away from Bucky and reached for you with a look of panic on her face. Her stuffed animal was still in her one hand.

You took her from Bucky onto right hip, trying to balance the two girl out. While Jamie latched onto you like a lifeline, Bucky took his goddaughter Sarah from you. You smiled as a thanks and together you made your way into the room.

The brunette moved himself partly in front of you and held Sarah close to him, his protectiveness shining through.

"Why are we here, Frosty? And why do you have a baby?" You heard a voice, that you recognized as Tony Starks.

Bucky stepped to the side and placed his hand on your shoulder. Jamie decided to risk a peak at the people only to quickly look away again.

However you could understand that it was a little overwhelming. Jamie had always been a shy girl and in front of her were standing or sitting nine people, all staring at us.

"Mommy there's Iron man," she whispered in awe into your ear. Bucky chuckled and smiled at you in amusement.

"So guys, this is Y/N Rogers, Steve's wife. They baby is Sarah and that is Jamie. They're Steve's daughters" the soldier introduced you, while ruffling Jamie's hair.

"Excuse me...wife? Daughters? Did you hit your head?" Tony spluttered.

"Steve and I agreed that we should keep our relationship and especially our daughters a secret. With him being a super soldier and me being a mutant, our kids are in danger and we wanted to protect them," you explained gently.

"But it's Capsicle, he can't have kids," Tony protested, crossed his arms and pouted. You had to swallow down a laugh, since you didn't want to seem rude.

"Tony you're a child," a redhead scolded him with a stern look, "I'm Natasha, you can call me Nat," she added towards you.

"Daddy says that you're really cool and that you can even take down Uncle Bucky," Jamie said and peaked out from your shoulder again with wide eyes.

"He said that huhh?" Natasha grinned at Bucky playfully.

"Do we need introductions?" Bucky asked, clearly trying to distract everyone. You decided not to call him out on it.

"I think I'm good. I believe I know your names," you smiled and scanned over the people. There obviously were Tony and Nat, you had immediately recognized Sam Wilson, Doctor Banner and Clint Barton. The twins Wanda and Pietro sat on the couch and Vision stood behind Wanda.

Steve had showed you pictures of the Avengers and told you storys because you were curious about his second family.

"So you're a mutant?" Wanda asked you curiously.

"Yeah I have healing powers. That's why I'm here now. To heal Steve," you explained.

"So you can heal? How does it work? Do you have limits?" Bruce asked and pushed back his glasses. He looked rather adorable with how his obvious shyness and his curiosity battled.

"I mean I can't raise people from the dead and I can't heal chronological illnesses but pretty much every injury. But I have to admit that you, that I haven't tried that much other then simple injuries" You answered patiently.

Then Sarah woke up and started fussing in Buckys arms, in which response Jamie started crying as well. Wordlessly you took Sarah from Bucky and started to calm your two kids. You knew that Sarah was fed and that her diaper was clear so either she was tired or irritated by the new environment.

Jamie on the other hand was distressed because she was overwhelmed by all the new people, the knowledge that something was wrong with her dad and that her little sister was crying as well.

"Come on let's sit down," Bucky said, when he saw your struggle to held both of the girls in your arms and led you to the couch where Wanda and Pietro were placed.

I sat down on the edge and Jamie slid into your lap and hugged you tightly, while you rocked your weeping baby.

"I'm sorry guys," you apologized while you went on to calm your girls. Sarah had gone over to quiet sobbing.

"Oh don't worry about it, there's always someone in this compound crying," Sam quipped and smirked at Clint who responded with a huff.

Pietro scooted closer to me and tapped on Jamie's shoulder. She glimpsed up at him and he gave her a smile. Then he poked her side and she giggled slightly and hid her face again.

"Are you hiding from me?" Pietro asked playfully and poked her again.

"Mommy he talks funny," Jamie whispered and looked at Pietro again. She was talking about his sovokian accent.

"That's sounds cool, can you teach me to talk like that?" Jamie asked her blue doe eyes, that she clearly had from Steve, sparkled in admiration.

"I don't know if I can. But I can try," Pietro answered with a boyish grin.

"Can I play with him?" The blonde girl asked you and after your nod she jumped onto Pietro with a giggle.

You knew you could trust the enhanced boy, so you switched your focus on Sarah and rocked her until she was asleep again.

When you looked up again, you noticed that all of the Avengers were watching you. You smiled a little shyly.

"I kind of want to see Steve now," you said and looked at Bucky, then added "Can you watch Jamie and Sarah? I don't want to take them to Steve if he is hurt. They can see him later."

Bucky nodded and gently took Sarah from your arms and rested her head on his upper flesh arm. You got up and looked around. Your eyes found Bruce.

"You were interested in my powers earlier, you could come and watch, I mena if you want to," you awkwardly proposed and fiddled with the hem of your shirt. No-one had offered to show you to the medical wing and you were lost, especially that Bucky now wasn't at your side anymore.

But for you it was more important that Jamie had someone in the room she knew and trusted. And you didn't want her to see her dad hurt.

"Yeah sure that would be great," Bruce smiled widely. He looked like a kid that just had gotten it's favorite candy.

"I think I'll come too," Tony decided and jumped on his feet. He casually took you by the arm and led you out of the room, Bruce on your tails. You looked back and caught Bucky's gaze, who reassured you with a smile.

You were deadly worried ever since Buckys call but you had tried not to show it. But now your nerves were reaching a new high and you just wanted to see the love of your life and hug him.

Luckily the three of you had reached the medical wing and Tony opened a door for you. You walked in and a startled gasp escaped you. Steve was laying in a hospital bed in a gown.

But the worst part was his messy hair, his pale, drained skin and his bruised, beaten up face. It broke your heart. You covered your mouth with your left hand while you stepped closer.

Almost scared you reached out and cupped the side of Steve's face and traced his cheekbone carefully.

"So how does the healing work?" Tony asked and plopped down in a chair. You jumped and pried your eyes away from Steve.

"Tony!" Bruce hissed and send me an apologetic glance.

"It's alright. Uhmm so basically it's like I have this power and I can feel it inside of me and I can send it into his body and the wounds heal and the power returns. At least thats what it feels like, it's kind of hard to explain," you shrugged and looked back at Steve.

Since you could no longer look at Steve, looking that horrible so you put your hand on Steve's chest and started your healing.

You all watched how the bruises and injuries healed and the color returned to his cheeks. A relieved sigh made it over your lips when you saw you husbands eyelids flutter and they slowly opened. A frown built on his forehead as he blinked and adjusted his eyes to the light.

"Hey Stevie," you cooed and stroked over his cheeks again. Steve's eyes found mine and they glittered full of love and admiration but also confusion.

"Hey Y/N/N, what are you doing here?" He asked and scanned the room his eyes lingering on Tony and Bruce for a moment. Apparently a silent conversation, that I didn't understood, took place and soon enough was Tony dragged out of the room by Bruce, despite his protests.

"Bucky gave me a call, said you were heavily injured. So I grabbed the kids and drove here as fast as I could," you explained and sat down on the edge of the bed.

"You shouldn't have. Being even near my workplace puts you in danger," the blonde protested half heartedly.

"Well I'm rather on the run with you then in this world without you. Please just for a minute let me appreciate that your alive and then you can continue your speech," you begged and pouted for good measure. That always seemed to do the trick with Steve.

"Alright baby, come here," he sighed in defeat and stretched his arm out for you. With a big smile you crawled into his arms and hugged him tightly.

Then you tipped your head up and kissed Steve gently, trying to pour all of your love into it.

After some time of silence Steve shifted slightly and then spoke again.

"How about you stay here for a few days and get to know the team? And then we have a talk about what's going to happen from then on. How does that sound?" Your husband suggested.

"That sounds great," you smiled and cuddled into the man.

You knew everything was going to be fine. Steve was perfectly fine, the Avengers didn't hate you and your family was happy.

You were happy and you knew that whatever the future would hold for you, you, your husband and your daughters would stand through it.

Summary: Scarlett a child abandoned by her mother at the age of two, not long after that she was found by a pack of wolves, being raised by them. She was also a mutant, being able to shift to a dog-like creature. Four years passed with some report’s of both her dog-like creature and her child form, not long after the avengers where called in.

“Why did you call us in Director?” A Male voice asked

“Have any of you been watching the news lately?” The Director said as he looked at the group surrounding the round table.

“Not as of late.” A female voice piped up as she looked at The Director.

“Here’s why.” The Director stated as he pulled up a video, and pressed play.

[Video]

“What is that things?”

“I don’t know Michael, but it’s not normal.”

The camera pointed towards a black shape that looked to be the size of a full grown male brown bear, or maybe the size of a jeep before the camera started to shake as the creature turned its head at the sound of a twig breaking, the creature’s face resembled that of almost like a dog but its pupils were spilt and had an eerie glow to them, it’s body was that almost like a lion but had muscle to it, and the tail well it had two one was like a monkey’s, and the second one was that of a lion’s.

“Don’t move, Michael.” Commanded the other male that was next to the man who was holding the camera’s name was Michael.

“I’ll try not too Chris.” Michael whispered, the camera had a hard time picking up his words.

The creature cocked it’s head as it watched the two men, before taking steps towards the two before starting too pant. Both men started to take steps back as the dog-like creature followed after their steps easily, before Michael and Chris started to panic before turning around and running like a bat out of hell, as they were running back the way they had come, the camera would catch glimpses of the creature running after them, before Michael tripped over a tree root and lost his grip on the camera, which rolled a few meters away and landed upside down catching sight of Michael on the ground, then with Chris entering the frame, pulling Michael up in a panic, “get up, get up. It’s coming closer!”

Michael let out a yelp as he was hauled up, “I have to get the camera!”

“You don’t unless you want to die!” Chris yelled at Michael before both disappeared from the camera’s view and the dog-like creature entered into the frame, panting but also whining, it stopped running after the men when it noticed the camera and walked over too it sniffing at it and pawed at it jostling it before sitting down and shifting to a female child form that looked no older then six years old and wearing a tattered shirt and shorts, her hair looked to waist length, ratted and tangled with twigs and leaves. Her skin was covered in dirt, her nails were long and formed a point at the tips, she came close to the camera, leaning down and sniffing before letting out a bark which sounded like a wolf would make when it wanted to play.

The girl backed away for a moment, crouched down before pouncing at the camera expecting it to play, but when it didn’t she let out a bark-whine, before a howl sounded through the air, which made the girl perk up at the sound, before she leaned back onto her heels and onto her hands letting her nail like claws press into the dirt, she leaned her head back and let out a wolf like howl, before turning around seeing two wolves com out of the brush yipping at her and nipping, their behavior showing familiarity. The wolf-girl barking back a the two wolves and started to follow them, before the video camera started showing a low battery symbol as the wolves and the girl disappeared from the frame.

[ Video Ended ]

“This was taken three days ago in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. This isn’t the first sighting of the child, but the first footage of her.” Director Fury said looking at the group.

“What is she?” A Man with a glass of whiskey asked.

“ A mutant, a shape-shifting one.”

“Have you tried to get her or the X-Men?” Another man asked, who was sitting next to the women with orange hair.

“The X-Men have tried but she is also very difficult to find. We are going to, and that why I’ve called you all here. You four are going to find her and bring her in.”

Natasha presses Iskra's unconscious body to her chest, emotions swirling like a thundercloud inside her. She closes her eyes, fighting to identify them.

Worry.

Affection.

...Fear.

“Nat?” Clint says, coming down the stairs. “Nat, what the hell happened?” He's beside her instantly, gently pulling her hands away from Iskra, easing her from Natasha's arms. “She was cold after the power outage,” Natasha says quietly. “It... it wasn't hypothermia. I don't know what happened. She said her father told her not to tell.” Natasha looks down at Iskra. “I–I couldn't do anything.” Clint wraps the blanket tighter around Iskra. “Okay,” he says softly. “It's okay, Nat.” She glances at him, trying to smile. “Nat, huh?” she asks. Clint's cheeks flush. “Do you not like it?” Natasha shakes her head, truly smiling now. “No, it's... nice.”

Clint's phone chirps. He pulls it out, checking the notification. “The QuinJet's here,” he says, squeezing Natasha's hand when she stiffens. “I won't let them hurt you or Iskra,” he assures her, standing and pulling her up.

They leave the safe house quickly. Natasha has to remind herself not to take her gun out, to keep her body language relaxed and harmless. “Hiya, Phil,” Clint calls out as they enter the jet. “He's my handler,” he adds in a quieter voice to Natasha. She looks at him, confused. “Your handler? He lets you call him by his first name?” Then, in realization, “He came back for you? Why?” He stares at her, mouth open. “Nat,” he begins—

Click click.

Immediately, before she can even think about it, Natasha raises her gun, safety off, ready to shoot. “Phil!” Clint protests, setting Iskra down in a nearby chair. Natasha’s eyes are wide, breathing harsh. She’d never reacted like that before; she’s always had to consciously take out her gun, turn the safety off, and load a bullet in the chamber.

“Nat,” Clint repeats, voice soft again, one hand on her elbow. “Can you lower your gun for me?” She nods quickly, deftly sliding it back in its holster and rubbing her face.

“What the fuck, Barton?” Phil asks. “You were sent to kill the Black Widow. Not bring her back, give her a nickname, and manage to pick up a kid along the way.”

“Наташа?” (Natasha?) a tiny voice whispers. “Наташа, что происходит?” (Natasha, what’s happening?) Natasha rushes over, hushing Iskra gently. “Это хорошо,” (it’s fine) she soothes, tugging an edge of the blanket around Iskra’s head. “Это самолет, который доставит нас в Америку.” (This is the plane that will take us to America.) Iskra nods jerkily, pulling herself into Natasha’s arms. “Oh,” she murmurs, sitting down on the chair. “Здравствуй.” (Hello.)

Phil stares at them, mouth open, much the same as Clint had done a couple minutes before. “What?” Natasha asks defensively, shifting Iskra into a more comfortable position. “She’s cold.” Iskra sighs peacefully, small fingers wrapping around Natasha’s. “Looks like a bit more than that,” Clint teases, sitting down next to her. “So what if it is?” Natasha answers. Clint smiles, folding a blanket corner over Iskra’s arms. “Nothing at all.”

Phil sighs resignedly and walks away, to pilot the jet, Natasha guesses. It's confirmed a moment later when the engine rumbles, powering up. Iskra squeaks, startled by the vibrations. “Всё хорошо,” (everything is fine) Natasha murmurs. “Просто самолет готовится к полету.” (The plane is just getting ready to fly.) Iskra nods, resettling in Natasha's lap.

“Nat,” Clint says. “Why... why did you ask that about Phil?” Natasha sighs, pressing her lips to the top of Iskra's head. “We barely ever communicated with our handlers,” she admits. “They followed us on missions, to make sure we didn't defect. This... was the first mission I was allowed to do alone.” She sighs. “Extraction was ours to figure out, whether we hadn't gotten a scratch, or could barely walk.” Clint touches her hand, hesitantly, and after a moment, she lets his fingers slip into hers. “I'm sorry,” he says quietly. “We–we thought you were doing it because you wanted to.” Natasha shakes her head, sniffling. “There's so many others,” she whispers. “So many out there, so many in training. I have a sister, did you know that? I left her there. Alone with them.” Iskra looks up at Natasha, reacting to the clear pain in her voice. “Что не так?” (What's wrong?) she asks. Natasha shakes her head again, wiping her eyes. “Просто воспоминания, маленькая искра,” (just memories, little spark) she says. “Возвращайся засыпать, ладно? Вам это понадобится.” (Go back to sleep, okay? You'll need it.) Iskra nods and curls back up, eyes closing.

“You're good with her,” Clint says softly. Natasha laughs, self-deprecatingly. “You really think so?” He smiles sadly. “I know so.”

~ ~ ~

Hours later, the QuinJet lands. Natasha jolts awake, heart pounding.

I’m in America.

Logically, she knows Clint will do all he can. But she’s still scared—for herself, for the small child in her arms. For what consequences Clint might have.

Iskra sits up, blinking. “Ты хорошо, Наташа?” (Are you okay, Natasha?) she asks. “Да, маленькая искра. Я в порядке,” (Yeah, little spark. I’m fine) she answers, smiling and tucking a lock of hair behind Iskra’s ear. “Я просто устал, вот и все.” (I’m just tired, that’s all.) Iskra frowns. “Но ты спал,” (but you were sleeping) she points out. Natasha shrugs, shifting Iskra in her arms to stand.

Clint and Phil are already at the opening ramp-door to the QuinJet, watching them quietly. “I didn’t know the Black Widow liked kids,” Phil comments as she comes over. “I don’t,” Natasha replies sharply. “I grew up very quickly. So did Iskra.” She walks down the ramp, not letting Phil answer.

They’ve landed in a huge aircraft hangar, people bustling around and running from place to place. “Welcome to the Triskelion Hangar,” Phil says, as though Natasha hadn’t stepped down onto the cement first, and starts heading to a plain metal door, supposedly leading to the rest of the Triskelion. Iskra buries her face in Natasha’s neck. “Что это, Искра?” (What is it, Iskra?) Natasha murmurs, rubbing circles on Iskra’s back as she follows Phil and Clint across the cement. “Так много шумов,” (there’s so many noises) she whimpers, coughing. “И это воняет.” (And it stinks.) Natasha frowns, unable to smell anything stronger than the faint scents of oil and exhaust. “Не могли бы вы прикрыть нос одеялом, может быть?” (Could you cover your nose with the blanket, maybe?) Iskra does so, immediately nodding with relief.

A moment later, Phil is pulling the door open.

“Ты безопасности здесь,” (you're safe here) Natasha tells me, pulling her hand away. “Обещать.” (promise)

I nearly fall off the chair, I move so fast, skittering behind a couch in the living room and blinking. Their shapes instantly paint themselves in layered shades of violet, magenta, yellow, and white, visible even through the couch. Clint says something I can't understand. Natasha replies in the same language, standing to put my bowl inside the fridge, then sitting next to the couch and peeking around the corner at me. “Привет,” (hello) she says softly. I scoot away, fingers tapping nervously. “Я не буду трогать,” (I won't touch) she says, reassuringly. “Ты можете сказать мне свое имя?” (Can you tell me your name?) I shake my head, tugging my hair over my face.

After a moment she sighs, and I can hear her stand and move across the room. Fabric shfffs and she comes back, fluttering something above me—a blanket, it turns out, when it lands over my back and arms. It's extraordinarily soft and warm for a house that only had baked beans to eat. I tug it around myself gratefully, curling up on the floor and quickly falling asleep.

When I wake up, I feel a little better, a little warmer. I stand, keeping the blanket around myself, and walk into the kitchen to find my beans. They’re hot again after a minute in the microwave, and I scarf them down quickly, then tiptoe to the stairs, listening.

Voices. The same language from earlier, probably English. Natasha’s voice carries a Russian accent; I can hear her rolled r’s and hard d’s. Clint’s sounds American. Why does she trust him? I wonder. I’d had an idea of who she was after seeing her hair, weapons, and armored catsuit, but then she said her name and confirmed it. I’ve heard stories of the Black Widow all my life. If Clint is American, he is almost certainly here to kill her.

Clint comes out of the room then, starting when he sees me, a silent sentry at the bottom of the stairs. He says something, smiling. I stare at him, evaluating. His smile seems to be genuine, which makes me frown in confusion.

Natasha exits too, face brightening when she sees me. “Привет, маленький,” (hello, little one) she says. “Ты нашел остальные свои бобы?” (Did you find the rest of your beans?) I nod silently and head back to the couch.

I can hear them talking back and forth. A couple words are repeated; one sounds like щи (shchi, or cabbage soup) but softer, another similar but with a sort of з (z) sound at the end. I peek over the back of the couch, almost making eye contact with Natasha but losing the courage. “Кто-то в самолете приедет за нами завтра, хорошо?” (Someone on a plane will pick us up tomorrow, okay?) she says, pretending she didn’t see me. “Он отвезет нас в Америку.” (He will take us to America.)

The logic rankles me, and on impulse, I speak. “Но они хотят убить тебя,” (but they want to kill you) I point out, kneeling on the couch cushion and resting my forearms on the back of the couch. “Вот почему Клинт здесь, да?” (That’s why Clint is here, yes?) Natasha sighs, walking over but not too close. “Ты был в Красной комнате, верно?” (You were in the Red Room, right?) she asks. I flinch slightly and nod. “Я помог Клинту снести Дрейкова. Это будет мой дезертир, доказательство его организации где моя преданность.” (I helped Clint take down Dreykov. This will be my defection, proof to his organization where my loyalties lie.) I stare up at her. “Ты убрал Дрейкова?” (You took down Dreykov?) I ask, awed. She nods, smiling. “И... и, возможно, ты сможешь стать частью моей новой жизни в Америке?” (And... and maybe you can become a part of my new life in America?)

I hadn’t realized the Black Widow could sound so unsure.

I touch her hand gently. “Да,” (yes) I reply. “Меня зовут Искра Хозяйкова.” (My name is Iskra Khozyaikova.) For a moment, her eyes look sad, but then her smile is brighter than the sun. “Приятно познакомиться, маленькая искра.” (Nice to meet you, little spark.)

I still don't speak or touch Clint and Natasha very much over the next several hours. It's not that I don't trust them; I just don't want to.

Also, I was sleeping for most of it.

Natasha nudges me awake in the last fifteen minutes or so. “Самолет скоро будет здесь,” (the plane will be here soon) she explains. “Я не уверен, будет ли еда, так что не хочешь ли что-нибудь съесть, прежде чем мы уйдем?” (I'm not sure if there will be food, so would you like to eat something before we leave?) I nod, weakly pushing myself up. “Отопление отключили?” (Has the heating been turned off?) I rasp. Natasha nods. “Да, у нас пропало электричество посреди ночи. Клинт только что снова включил его.” (Yes, we lost power in the middle of the night. Clint just turned it back on.) Her brow furrows with concern. “Ты холодно?” (Are you cold?)

Не показывай слабости, Искра.

Don't show weakness, Iskra.

“...Нет.” (…No.)

“Ты уверены?” (Are you sure?)

“Да.” (Yes.)

Natasha sighs, but accepts the answer and heads into the kitchen to heat up more beans. I stumble after her, vision swimming, and the next moment the microwave is beeping violently in my ear. I shriek in pain, hands clapping over my ears. The blanket falls from my shoulders, letting in a rush of cold air, and my legs crumple. “Искра!” (Iskra!) Natasha exclaims, catching me before I hit the ground. Everywhere she touches burns, but I can barely keep my eyes open, much less pull away or ask her to put me down. I can hear her speaking, but there's a sharp ringing in my ears, and my mouth is too dry to speak anyway. Distantly, I wish I could ask for some water, but drinking it will only make this worse, especially if it's cold.

The blanket is wrapped around me again, and something warm and wet touches my lips. Water. I sip at it greedily. The ringing fades, allowing me to hear Natasha again. “Искра,” (Iskra) she says. “Что произошло?” (What happened?) I drink the water too fast, coughing and spluttering. Finally, I manage to croak, “Папочка сказал мне не говорить.” (Daddy told me not to tell.) Her hand brushes my cheek, pushing away a sweaty lock of hair. “Ты должен сказать мне,” (you need to tell me) Natasha insists. “Ты больной.” (You're sick.)

Никому, блядь, не говори, иначе, клянусь, я убью тебя, как ты убил свою мать.

Don't fucking tell anyone, otherwise I swear I'll kill you like you killed your mother.

My breath shudders.

“Папочка больше нет здесь. Ты можешь мне рассказать. Я буду держать тебя в безопасности,” (Daddy is no longer here. You can tell me. I will keep you safe.) Natasha tries, but before I can answer, my vision goes black, the world around me silent.

Chapter One

He finds her in a safe house.

Shots are fired. Three arrows leave black marks on the wall next to a window. Finally, he pins her to the floor and holds a knife to her throat. Something flashes in her eyes, something that makes him stop.

It is not anger, or hate, or vengeance.

It is regret.

Remorse.

Fear.

Sorrow.

He stares down at her, panting. She stares up at him, no longer struggling. Resigned to her fate. “Black Widow,” he says, voice still rough as he tries to catch his breath. “Hawkeye,” she replies steadily, her Russian accent thick.

“Do you want to live?”

“I… I don’t know.”

His voice softens. “If I roll off of you right now, are you going to attack me?” Her breath shudders in surprise. “No.”

And she doesn’t.

“What’s your name?” he asks, dabbing at the small scrape on her throat. She hesitates, thinking, then answers, “Natalia. But… but my friends call me Natasha.” He smiles. “Hi, Natasha. I’m Clint.”

“We need confirmation Dreykov’s in the building,” Clint says, eyes focused on said building from his perch a few roofs away. “His car is pulling up now,” Natasha reports. She watches as a young girl, no more than four or five years old, with hair even redder than Natasha’s exits the car and is ushered inside. Her eyes follow the girl to the second floor, heading to a room with a familiar figure inside. This is wrong, she thinks suddenly. The girl shouldn’t be killed for Dreykov’s sins. But if Dreykov dies…

Maybe my own sins can be forgiven.

“Natasha, we clear?”

“Yes,” she answers automatically and promptly regrets it. “Wai—”

But the building is already exploding. The girl’s tiny body is wreathed in flames and propelled through a window. She lands below Natasha’s hiding spot on an apartment building fire escape, bruised, bleeding, and unconscious, but strangely unburned. Natasha easily slips from her hiding spot into the alley, feet thudding on the gravel-strewn asphalt next to the girl. Clint runs up to them, a first-aid pack in his hands. “Hey,” he pants, kneeling and taking out a couple alcohol wipes and some bandages. “How’d you find her?” he asks, cleaning a scrape on the girl’s arm. “She was flung out of the building by the explosion,” Natasha explains, bandaging a cut on her leg. “So… probably part of the Red Room?” Natasha nods. “I… I couldn’t leave her. To be… made into another Widow.” The girl’s hair is coated in ash and dust, but a few of the fiery red-gold curls still glitter in the light. Clint nods too, touching Natasha’s arm gently. “I don’t want that either.”

They work together in silence for the next several minutes, until a gunshot hits the brick of the building behind them, not far above Clint’s head. Immediately he’s up, the girl in his arms, zipping down the alley. Natasha fires her own gun while packing up the first aid kit as fast as possible and follows him.

The gunman chases them for several blocks and into a train station. They dart around a couple corners, until Natasha spots a grate in the ceiling, leading to an air vent. She gestures to it and Clint nods, shifting the girl in his arms so that he can reach up and swing it open. He lifts the girl inside, pulls himself up, and holds out his hands to help Natasha up. “Come on!” he hisses impatiently when Natasha pauses, her independent instincts warring with the critical goal of hiding. Finally, she gives the first aid kit to Clint and grabs his hands once he’s shoved it behind him. He pulls her up easily and gets the vent closed once more just before the gunman comes around the corner, raging about what he’s going to do to someone named Iskra Khozyaikova.

He searches for a long time, so long that Clint eventually takes out a Sharpie and draws a strange grid on the wall of the vent. Natasha can only give him a look of complete confusion. He draws an x in one space, holding the permanent marker out to her. Hesitantly, she takes it and draws her own x. Clint’s eyes widen with surprise. “Do you know how to play tic tac toe?” he whispers. Natasha shakes her head mutely. Clint's expression saddens, but at the look on Natasha's face, he wipes it away quickly. “One person draws x’s and the other draws o’s,” he explains, still whispering. “The first person who gets a line of three wins.” Natasha nods in understanding and draws a new grid, then an o in the far-right middle space, and hands the marker to Clint.

They play two or three dozen games before they both decide it’s safe to leave. Natasha wins the most by far.

Clint leads Natasha, the girl in her arms, to a safe house. She wakes up at the sound of the door creaking open, her golden eyes instantly filling with fear. She twists and writhes, but her body is so small and her strength so little that Natasha keeps hold of her easily. “Ты в безопасности,” (you’re safe) she soothes, carefully setting her down when she pauses for a moment. Clint heads to the tiny kitchen, taking three cans of baked beans from the pantry, dumping them in bowls, and putting them in the microwave. “Хотите немного еды?” (Would you like some food?) Natasha asks, leading the girl into the kitchen. She nods after a moment, tentatively climbing onto a chair. “She looks really malnourished. Don’t let her eat too much,” Clint warns. Natasha makes a noise of agreement, watching carefully as the three of them eat and nudging the girl’s bowl away when the amount of beans in the bowl has visibly decreased. “Остальное вы сможете получить позже,” (you can have the rest later) Natasha reassures in response to the girl’s sound of protest. “Как тебя зовут?” (What's your name?) Natasha says. The girl just stares at her silently, clearly still suspicious. Natasha exhales. “Хорошо, ну, меня зовут Наташа, а моего друга зовут Клинт.” (Okay, well, my name is Natasha, and my friend’s name is Clint.) The girl flinches when she hears друга (friend). “Что не так?” (What's wrong?) Natasha asks, reaching out to take the girl's hand, but she jerks away, eyes wide. “Нет,” (no) she whispers. “Пожалуйста.” (Please.) Natasha nods, pulling away. “Ты безопасности здесь,” (you're safe here) she repeats. “Обещать.” (promise)
