My favorite fountain pen is the Sheaffer Balance. It was produced from 1929 to 1942, and came in thirteen different colors. I can't tell you why exactly, but something about the style and the shape is just Very Pen to me.
Tumblr media
Fun fact: the rarest pen in this bunch is the stubby blue one. Apparently people in 1932 didn't like blue.
Today I inked up the one in the middle, the Rose Glow.
Tumblr media
It intrigues me that whoever bought this pen sprung for the wide jeweler's band on the cap, but not the White Dot lifetime guarantee. If you turn over the jeweler's band, you see this:
Tumblr media
Engravings are common on pens of this age. Some folks avoid them, but I think they're cool. They're the pen's history.
Tumblr media
Gratuitous nib shot! Thanks to the wonders of macro photography you can see where the platinum mask didn't quite stay within the lines.
Tumblr media
It's hard to capture just how much this pen glows. You'll just have to take my word for it that the material catches and shifts the light. There's a silvery effect I couldn't capture at all.
There are modern pens with this kind of chatoyancy, FWIW. But they cost more than old broken pens on eBay. Maybe someday I'll get a BENU or Black Robin. Even so, the Balance is Very Pen and I love my collection.

Ink Review: Platinum Chou Kuro
What is the blackest ink on the market right now? Platinum Carbon Black? Montblanc Permanent Black? Platinum recently advertised an ink that is significantly darker than Carbon Black. Platinum Chou Kuro. The potential downside of Chou Kuro is the ease of cleaning. The first edition of this ink comes with its own converter and a bottle of “Cleaning Water”. Closer inspection shows that the water is…

If Kim used fountainpens, he’d use a Pilot Vanishing Point with Platinum Carbon Black cartridges

Ok, so this is a problem whenever I use one of my fountain pens with bottled ink rather than ink cartridges. They don’t leak out the nib, but the ink just tends to … bleed out of the pen all over my writing hand, not just where my fingers and thumb hold it to write (I have terrible hand/finger writing position—hang on, I’ll do another photo to demonstrate even though it’s not tremendously relevant to this post):
Tumblr media
Anyway. It only happens after I refill my pen. Once I’ve used it for a while the leakage/bleed stops, until the next time I refill when it starts all over again. It’s the worst with this pen, which is a Platinum Plaisir, but it also happens somewhat with my Pilot Metropolitan and my Pilot Prera.
Which makes me think the problem has to be in the way I refill them, not a problem with the pen itself, but I have no clue what I’m doing wrong or, obviously, I would stop doing it. I finally figured out how to do the actual pen refilling without getting ink all over my hands, now I just need to learn how to use the after it’s been refilled without getting all inky!
Advice welcome.

More notes and concept sketches for my Helluva Boss fic Tarnished. Finalized sigil designs for Blitzø and Loona since they’re plot relevant.

I’ve got designs in mind for other characters but I really wanted to pin these down and get my thoughts on how some of the magic works.
