Platinum End is plenty different enough from Future Diary
So I've finally tried Platinum End, which I mentioned over 18 months ago as a PURPORTED Mirai Nikki-like. At first I was going to read the manga, but I shifted over to the anime adaption and just finished watching.
When Platinum End's manga first got going in late 2015, it had a lot of expectation surrounding it because it was Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata follow-up to their incredibly popular Death Note series. Those of us who were around and paying attention back then like also recall how Platinum End got a lot of flack during its early manga run for supposedly being a Mirai Nikki ripoff. I remember plenty of derisive comments pointing out "12 13 unstable people compete to be the next god? A depressed and weak-willed guy + his love interest team up to fight off the rest? One of their opponents is even a wannabe-sentai superhero???"
(Mind you, this was in the mid-2010s — back before the Internet Hive Mind largely decided that Mirai Nikki was always secretly shitty. :( *siiiiiigh*)
But nevermind all that: In actuality, Platinum End is very good at doing its own damn thing!
Tumblr media
The male protagonist is deadass named "Mirai." Sadly, the girl's name is not "Nikki."
Major setup differences:
There is no Survival Game built into the contest for god. All candidates could just meet up and agree on a new god if they chose to do so. But of course, more than one of them decides that the best course of action is to kill all challengers, so survival definitely becomes a factor FAST. But in this story, unlike Mirai Nikki, there is no real reason NOT to team up with other candidates... provided they aren't planning to off you later.
The god candidates in Future Diary get to have Future Diaries. Obviously. But the god candidates in Platinum End instead get divine powers gifted by their guardian angels. Yes, once you're a candidate, you can see and interact with your guardian angel. Only other candidates can see your angel and your powers. Based on your angel's rank in heaven, you might be gifted either one or a combination of the following: (A) angel wings capable of lightspeed flight, (B) a "red arrow" that makes anyone hit by it instantly adore and love you, making them very susceptible to your wishes... but only for 33 days, and/or (C) a "white arrow" that kills a person instantly on contact.
Tumblr media
Mirai's angel, Nasse, might secretly be the series' best character. She's a delight. She does get a lot less focus in the second half of the series, though.
What spawns from this setup is a story that maintains a largely serious tone while veering between very different styles of conflicts. The first half of the series is heavy on suspense and action — complete with the shonen-like tropes of multi-episode showdowns that feature characters standing in place while inner monologues go over their attack plans. :P The second half of the series, by contrast, is heavy on debates about existential concepts and personal morality.
If that sounds good to you, I can recommend 23 out of this series' 24 episodes! But the very last one is, IMO, best ignored/skipped. It's a shitty denouement that, for me, ruined a lot of what came before it while simultaneously failing to answer the questions it raises. However, ep. 23 has a very satisfying conclusion; you'll be good there.
FINALLY! I must warn y'all about this: If you're someone who thought Mirai Nikki's Yukiteru was too "whiny" or too averse to violence? You are not ready for how weak-willed and confrontation-averse the male protagonist of Platinum End is. Somebody took those traits and turned that dial up as HIGH AS POSSIBLE.
Tumblr media
For example: For a LOOOONG time, Mirai can't even bring himself to use a "weapon" GUARANTEED TO NOT HURT HIS OPPONENT IN ANY WAY WHATSOEVER, even when said opponent is TRYING THEIR BEST TO MURDER HIM RIGHT FUCKING NOW. He just won't use his guaranteed-peaceful solution, because it still represents some form of "attack." The other person has a one-shot insta-kill attack, and Mirai is over here like "How could I live with myself if I hit this person with this ultra-plushie boxing glove?!" It's truly unbelievable.

Dishonorable Mentions of 2022
This is just MY OPINION.
Please take this all with a grain of salt.

Platinum End
Death Note successor my ass. 💀
Requiem of the Rose King
Depressing, morbid and tragic as fuck. 💔🖤
Tomodachi Game
Started off good but then everything feels disjointed and off and dragging out too much... I'm gonna stop now. 😵‍💫
Odd Taxi Into the Woods
The last 5 to 7 mins of new content at the PRACTICAL END of the movie should have been put in the end of the final episode of the anime. This movie was unnecessary! 😑
The Devil is a Part Timer Season 2
Art style, fight choreography, quality — It's all downgraded. I rewatched S1 to prepare for S2 and the change is too obvious. It's been a decade, new people working on it, so yeah it'll be different. But honestly it's a miss. 😮‍💨
Again JUST MY OPINION.
PLEASE DON'T TAKE IT TOO SERIOUSLY!
If anyone even reads this that is.

i just finished watching platinum end and i am so confused about my feelings about it.
i rarely watch anime because i can't stand the constant screaming, mental gymnastics and endless monologues.
platinum end had it all.
and yet i couldn't stop watching, even when i had to physically stop myself from hitting the 10 seconds forward button lest i miss the single sentence that was actually relevant to the plot.
generally i prefer a neutral or "bad" ending when watching a show as catastrophic as this one, but the end was so...
i literally said "bro overthought everything" out loud. wow.
i'm also confused why nasse disappeared. wasn't she beyond god? if he got there and she was already a thing, wouldn't that mean he didn't create her and so she'd be "over" him? feel free to answer this cause i'm truly curious.
i think my biggest conflict with this anime is the fact that we had to suffer through kakehashi's tears and morals only for him to see with his very two eyes a literal child be shot and killed in front of him and be like "oh he dead? 'kay, next" and never mention him ever again.

Platinum End manga finale
Tumblr media
**SPOILERS**
Okie... so I have a lot of thoughts on this, and little to no clue on how to string them together, but so be it.
Alrighty, first and foremost, insane concept and yet somehow so thoroughly developed? But what else did we expect from the legendary duo who brought us "Death Note", Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. Twice now they have thought of God, and decided to test his limits and explore what sort of entity He truly is. And, of course, how He (of course capital H, this is God we're speaking bout here) came to be to begin with. And what better a concept than god candidates?
There were so many points throughout the story where they could have left it underdeveloped, failing to explain how everything came to be. They could have just decided to leave "God is an entity that ordered angels to choose His predecessor" and left it at that. But no, we must give motivation to the angels as well and question the existence of God as a whole.
The angels in this manga could have easily been just some random side characters whose only person was to give the candidates arrows and wings, but instead, they were each given a unique trait and given a motivation for why they believe their candidate should win. Nasse was special rank, who's known for her innocence. She only wishes for Mirai to find happiness, and she believes him becoming God is the solution to that. Revel is originally a second-rank angel of trickery that is promoted to first-place, and while he seems to only want Saki to win at first simply for the glory, he soon begins to feel empathy for Saki when she is left behind on multiple occasions, and becomes the first angel to shed tears, becoming the angel of emotion. Balta simply followed his intuition for the best outcome; Meyza yearned for power; Muni wished for the downfall of all creation; Baret seems impartial, but shares her seemingly infinite wisdom and knowledge with Mukaido; Penema was interested in the game itself, much like his chosen candidate Susumu; Ogaro is knowledgeable in the astral plane and seems to only want peace.
The candidates themselves also had unique personalities and motivations, as well as random strangers pierced by the red arrows. Mirai wishes for all of humanity to lead happy lives and values all life; Saki has similar goals to Mirai once she learns to embrace life herself; Yuri only wants wealth so she may live comfortably, Nakaumi wants for everyone who wishes to to die without scorn; Yoneda wants to unearth the mysteries of the universe; Susumu wants to play; Mukaido wants his family to be taken care of once he is gone; Kanade wants for everyone to be rich, and be rid of the poor, in fear of them corrupting the innocent like his dear sister; Hajime only wants to be accepted by society; and of course we have minor characters, such as Chiyo (the young girl) who wants to resume living peacefully, and Tonma who feels his lust for women.
I think though, that the more intriguing characters lay in those affected by the red arrows. Rea was such a sweet and innocent girl who didn't deserve the wrath of her brother's fears, and reminds me quite a bit of Nasse. Minamikawa used to only be interested in the archery club girls, until he realized his friend was involved in the God selection process; Kohinata was intriguing for her brief appearance alongside the battle with Kanade, researching viruses and infections that could determine the result of the entire war; Hoshi and Yumiki, two lovers working as detectives who despite everything still saw the humanity in the god candidates; my personal favourite, Mimi, the escaped convict responsible for the deaths of several high school girls. It was refreshing (for lack of a better word) to have a character like her, so young and the vision of a kawaii girl, it was odd to realize she was a murderer.
Alright, now for the ending... what the fuck.
Great, so Nakaumi won the competition and became God. Unanticipated, but doesn't particularly bother me. Then he gets emerged in some random ass teenage body and sits in a little loop-de-loop in what I presume to be Heaven. Then Ogaro explains to us foolish readers not exactly well versed with the cosmos and the way of the gods that they must wait for Nakaumi to completely incorporate with God, which would take an unknown amount of time.
During this time, we're lucky enough to see our characters become happy in their futures. Mirai and Saki get married and own a flower shop; Yoneda finally gets to work on his projects in his laboratory, still equipped with the red arrows, and employs Yuri, who is payed swimmingly and seems to strike a chord in his heart; even Shuji's brother makes an appearance, and he seems content with his life now.
...then shit hits the fan. Of course Revel and Nasse are watching all this, and Nasse concludes that her work is done as Mirai has found happiness in his life. Yippee! But wait... Nasse's not an angel. Well, no, she is, but she's also the original living organism to exist in the galaxy. God is unaware as to whether she created him, or he created her. Okay... weird, but we can get behind this, and apparently she unknowingly has the power to possess godlike abilities if she were to figure out how. Cool!
We know, right! We get to further explore Nasse's character, maybe she'll find out one day and do everything she can do make Mirai even happier with his life again... no. God kills himself out of boredom? "Shittttt, I gotta sit around and do nothing all day? There's seriously nothing for me to do? I can't even kill these suicidal people like Nakaumi wanted because they're already killing themselves." So yeah, bye bye God, bye bye universe. Before that though he summoned the first-rank angels to him. Why? Did he want them to die together? But don't invite Nasse and Muni, they're unwanted. Okay bitch.
Nasse's content with disappearing, Muni wanted this to begin with, and Ogaro's pissed at himself for looking away for literally one second. So yeah, humanity dies because God became bored, and everything blinks out of existence. But hey, at least Yoneda got the answer he was searching for, ALTHOUGH WE NEVER GOT TO FIND OUT WHAT THAT WAS
