PET or PVC?
LPs are alive and well. But time waits for nobody. There is a new way to make LPs and not with vinyl.
Oh and here is another subdivision of media. Two types of LP which is better?
Vinyl is PVC or Polyvinyl chloride which is a very common material. It has many uses. LPs have been made from it for a freaking long time. One issue with LP manufacture is the material is heated to melt and cooled to pull from the molds. That needs a lot of energy. Oh and it is made from oil yadda yadda.
PET is Polyethylene Tere-unpronounceable. It is used in pop bottles and such is a tough strong and easy to recycle material. Post consumer material source.
A company in Germany has developed a method of injection molded LPs using PET. Years ago in the US there were 45s injected using styrene which is a poor material with respect to physical properties and earned a poor reputation with respect to records. The PET process is promising and uses far less energy and can use recycled pop bottles.
So some "vinyl" is not vinyl. Is there a difference?
Cue up Micheal Fremer the defender of the disc, lord of analog.
Two apparently identical LPs of Pop Music. One looks very shiny. The other less so. I listened to the audio tracks on my computer with earbud headphones. (Not high end at all but its what I got here)
They sounded different.
To be rigorous they were made in different plants with different machines and different stamper molds. That means it could have been different masters. Could have been. What I am emphasizing is the difference in sound may not be from the different material.
To my ear the injected one was better. I heard nicer depth and texture and clarity. My usual triple DTC.
I would guess that PET would last longer than vinyl in this application. The material properties are generally better to much better for hardness and strength.
Small detail watching the two spin on that 6 figure turntable. The green light reflection moves around as they turn. The thickness of the two records varies differently. There appears to be one thick spot on the injection disc and a couple smaller variations on the pressed one. Is that a warp or an actual thickness thing?
I would like to hear a PET LP on my system. There are not many available. I will keep a look out for one.

knowing what i know now about injection molding, i have a lotta respect for whoever lego's mold techs and machine operators are because the tolerances of these bricks must be crazy. ik for most pieces they can just avoid a parting line altogether by putting it at the edge of the brick but you cant do that for a lot of them and a majority of the time the parting line is virtually invisible. most of the time you can still feel and identify the parting line pretty easily but with lego there's so much less flash than usual and i have a lot of respect for that. also theyre usually pretty good about finding inconspicuous spots for the gates (or at least ones that dont downgrade the appearance of the part) while not having any short shots or burns, which for some of these gate locations is really impressive to me

it's cool to have my parts come in and test them out and see the phenomena from my injection molding textbook play out in front of me. look at that! it breaks right at that stress concentration! or when overloaded here, it breaks right at the weld line! there's shrinkage here and here! even stuff like anisotropic strength due to the orientation of the glass fibers and the polymer strands is right there in front of my eyes. yes!! yes!!

Plastic Injection Molding Shapes Tomorrow
Plastic material is melted and then injected into a mold cavity using the industrial process of plastic injection molding to produce a solid, three-dimensional item. This method enables the constant mass manufacture of intricate and accurate plastic components.
Important Elements in Plastic Injection Molding
Melting and injecting the plastic material into the mold consists of a hopper for loading plastic pellets, a barrel for heating the material, and a screw or plunger for forcing the molten plastic into the mold.
Tumblr media
Mold: Molds can be created with one or more cavities and are commonly constructed of steel or aluminum depending on the needs of the production process.
Clamping Unit: During the injection process by the injection moulding manufacturer, the clamping unit guarantees that the mold stays tightly closed. The two mold parts are held together by a clamping mechanism, and the necessary force is applied by a hydraulic system.
Ejector System: The ejector system forces the final item out of the mold once the plastic has cooled and set inside the mold. The removal of the molded pieces is made simple and effective by this element.
The Technique of Plastic Injection Molding:
Mold Setup: The injection molding machine is ready for use after the mold has been put inside of it.
Pellets of plastic are fed into the machine's hopper during material loading.
Plastic pellets are heated and melted in the barrel of the injection machine before being injected. The molten plastic is then forcefully pumped into the mold cavity.
Cooling: The plastic inside the mold is solidified by cooling the mold. The thickness of the component and the material has an impact on the cooling time.
Ejection: The ejector mechanism forces the final object out of the mold once the plastic has hardened.
Plastic injection molding advantages:
Precision and Consistency: Plastic injection molding yields components with precise tolerances and reliable quality, making it the perfect process for high-precision goods.
Wide Material Variety: The technique is flexible in that it can handle a variety of thermoplastic and thermosetting materials.
Tumblr media
Complex Geometries: Using alternative manufacturing processes would be difficult or impossible for the fabrication of elaborate and complex forms. Injection moulding is the best fit for this.

Injection moulding tooling costs and a lengthy necessary turnaround time.
Making  plastic molding company near me for the injection moulding method is a costly operation that limits your prototyping options. Plastic prototype companies may be fairly expensive to recreate each time you need to manufacture numerous iterations. Because these plastic Injection molds are often composed of steel, making adjustments is difficult and cannot be suited to your prototype development. To create huge quantities, it is a viable option. This process still has significant injection moulding tooling costs and a lengthy necessary turnaround time.
