The Working Principle of Plastic Injection Mold
Plastic injection mold is an important plastic processing tool, through which plastic raw materials are transformed into products of various shapes and specifications. The principle of injection mold can be summarized as the following steps:
1. Plasticizing and injection
First of all, plastic raw materials undergo a series of processing treatments, such as drying, screening, mixing, etc., to become plasticized materials suitable for injection molding. In the heating barrel of the injection machine, the plastic begins to melt and plasticize under the action of heat, forming a uniform molten state. Subsequently, the plasticized plastic is pushed into the nozzle of the injection machine through the pushing action of the plunger or screw. When the plastic in the nozzle accumulates to a certain amount, the driving force of the injection machine stops, and the nozzle of the injection machine injects plastic into the pouring system of the mold. At this point, the pouring system introduces the plastic into the mold cavity.
2. Mold filling
Under the pressure of the injection machine, the plastic flows in the mold cavity and fills the entire cavity. In this process, the plastic is subjected to pressure and temperature, and continues to plasticize and melt. At the same time, the cooling system of the mold begins to work, and the heat inside the mold is taken away by the cooling channel or the cooling medium, so that the plastic is quickly cooled and shaped in the cavity.
Tumblr media
3. Mold opening and release
When the plastic is cooled and hardened in the mold cavity, the mold is opened and the molded plastic product is pushed out of the mold cavity or removed from the mold. This process is called opening and stripping. When the mold is opened, the parting surface of the mold is opened, and the product is pushed out or taken out of the mold. The mold is then closed and ready for the next round of injection molding.
4. Other auxiliary actions
In the process of injection molding, some other auxiliary actions are also involved, such as the exhaust of the mold, the adjustment of the ejector mechanism, and the control of the mold temperature. These actions are essential to ensure the quality of the product and the stability of the production.
In summary, the principle of plastic injection mold mainly involves plasticizing, injection, filling, cooling, mold opening and mold release steps. These steps are coordinated to complete the injection molding process of plastic products. With the continuous progress of science and technology, plastic injection molding technology is also developing, and new injection machines, molds and processes continue to emerge, providing more choices and possibilities for the production of plastic products.

PET or PVC?
LPs are alive and well. But time waits for nobody. There is a new way to make LPs and not with vinyl.
Oh and here is another subdivision of media. Two types of LP which is better?
Vinyl is PVC or Polyvinyl chloride which is a very common material. It has many uses. LPs have been made from it for a freaking long time. One issue with LP manufacture is the material is heated to melt and cooled to pull from the molds. That needs a lot of energy. Oh and it is made from oil yadda yadda.
PET is Polyethylene Tere-unpronounceable. It is used in pop bottles and such is a tough strong and easy to recycle material. Post consumer material source.
A company in Germany has developed a method of injection molded LPs using PET. Years ago in the US there were 45s injected using styrene which is a poor material with respect to physical properties and earned a poor reputation with respect to records. The PET process is promising and uses far less energy and can use recycled pop bottles.
So some "vinyl" is not vinyl. Is there a difference?
Cue up Micheal Fremer the defender of the disc, lord of analog.
Two apparently identical LPs of Pop Music. One looks very shiny. The other less so. I listened to the audio tracks on my computer with earbud headphones. (Not high end at all but its what I got here)
They sounded different.
To be rigorous they were made in different plants with different machines and different stamper molds. That means it could have been different masters. Could have been. What I am emphasizing is the difference in sound may not be from the different material.
To my ear the injected one was better. I heard nicer depth and texture and clarity. My usual triple DTC.
I would guess that PET would last longer than vinyl in this application. The material properties are generally better to much better for hardness and strength.
Small detail watching the two spin on that 6 figure turntable. The green light reflection moves around as they turn. The thickness of the two records varies differently. There appears to be one thick spot on the injection disc and a couple smaller variations on the pressed one. Is that a warp or an actual thickness thing?
I would like to hear a PET LP on my system. There are not many available. I will keep a look out for one.

knowing what i know now about injection molding, i have a lotta respect for whoever lego's mold techs and machine operators are because the tolerances of these bricks must be crazy. ik for most pieces they can just avoid a parting line altogether by putting it at the edge of the brick but you cant do that for a lot of them and a majority of the time the parting line is virtually invisible. most of the time you can still feel and identify the parting line pretty easily but with lego there's so much less flash than usual and i have a lot of respect for that. also theyre usually pretty good about finding inconspicuous spots for the gates (or at least ones that dont downgrade the appearance of the part) while not having any short shots or burns, which for some of these gate locations is really impressive to me
