Japanses shoji panels – thoughts due to the transparencey and structure – can create a pavilion – lots of waste cannot be reused easily – also represents the existing structure

Rowan Mersh
Placuna Pro Dilectione Mea, 2016
Rowan Mersh creates meticulous sculptural works using seashells. Reminiscent of land art, the pieces create a juxtaposition between human intervention and nature through the method of their production. They pull the viewer towards them using a manipulation of visual textures reminiscent of optical illusions. Mersh has used the repetition of a simple structure to create something completely texturally opposed to its original form, juxtaposing the hard and soft, the simple and the complex. Mersh once said, “I hope that the beauty and fragility of nature is reflected in my work. What I strive to do is celebrate the inherent beauty of the material itself,” and I believe he has succeeded in that. The sheer number of shells makes us wonder at their origin, their story, their purpose. They are a clear reminder for us to take notice of the insignificant.
