I gotta ask, what on earth have you heard about Rick Riordan that makes you think he’s homophobic? Like of all things to attach to him, it’s homophobia? One of the most popular and major supporting characters is a gay dude and we’ve been following him as a supporting character initially for years. The newest series in the universe follows him as a main character. Of all the times to accuse him of being homophobic, now is very much not it.

Legit, we’re 12+ (MAIN, not side stories) books in at this point, and he’s only gotten more fleshed out in representation in time - and that’s just with the PJO universe. He’s been writing the Kane Chronicles and Magnus Chase sister series (they’re in the same universe and have “Xover events” in side stories) at the same time. He wasn’t always great with his representation, but he always made a point to improve with every book, and clearly put a lot of thought into his writing.

I really don’t think you can accuse him of being a bigot on purpose on anything? He’s very earnest in his attempts, and he’s cultivated a culture of wanting to learn more about the world and do better to give usually ignored voices a spot in the limelight as the star of their own adventure. Main complaints are usually how shallow things and characters can feel at first (the justification for the magical state of things felt pretty weak at first, and made more sense if you didn’t think too hard on it), but he put effort into fleshing them out better overtime. I don’t think this man a saint or anything, but I also have little reason to believe him bigot and an asshole, so I’d appreciate being corrected if I’m wrong.

Genuinely, where does that complaint come from? Sounds like it may not have actually been for him, but a cheap attempt to discredit a popular piece of media by throwing something “problematic” at it and seeing what sticks.

Was talking about the canon PJO x TKC crossovers and was reminded about how since Drew popped up in TKC as the mean girl at Sadie's school ive wanted Sadie to show up at CHB for like a diplomatic thing (like the gods all know about each other, cant remember but i think Chiron knew about the roman camp (and tbh theres no way he doesnt know about the other gods), and egypt's gods operate globally they've gotta have some contact with other pantheons) and either its like super secret because the campers cant know about the bigger godly picture and someone (Lacy?) blows it because they recognize Sadie or its a big deal that all the campers are talking about leading up to it and gather around when Sadie shows up. So Sadie is there and oh great theres pretentious Drew who thinks she's hot stuff so Sadie just smugly lets Chiron list off all the reasons Sadie is a big deal (host of isis, sister of the pharaoh, etc)

For this one I mostly want to add a few things that came up in the notes

I specifically gave Sam a Magen David necklace here both because I usually do and because I wanted it to be clear Sam is absolutely still Jewish here. Sam is Jewish in any setting, and certainly any au that takes place in basically the real world with some twists. She's Jewish in canon, she's Jewish in anything I make, and if someone is working on a project and doesn't think she's Jewish there, I'd recommend thinking long and hard about why erasing that aspect of her character feels necessary or okay. Another Jewish person might feel differently about doing an au involving the Greek pantheon, but to me, Sam, and however much of her family interact with figures of Greek myth, just doesn't think of them as gods. They're powerful beings, sure, but as Chiron in the PJO books puts it, they're not capital-G God. She wouldn't pray or sacrifice to them, because she doesn't worship them, but 'the world is a big weird place filled with things we don't totally understand' isn't anithetical to Judaism!

This isn't "canon" per se to this au but it would also be so funny to me if Sam's aunts are a) Persephone, goddess of springtime/queen of hell, and b) Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch (from the au I've done for a few other xover danuary pieces where Sam's grandfather is Magneto)

Mouse & I tossed around some other godly ancestors for the trio, including a Big 3 Trio (Danny Zeus, Tucker Poseidon, Sam Hades), a most obvious associations (Danny Hades or Thanatos, Tucker Hephaestus), or all further descendants (eg one of Danny's parents being a Hades kid and the other a Boreas kid). In the end Mouse suggested Hermes for Tucker, which really grabbed me: chronically underlooked; Jack of all trades; toeing the line between very charming and very smackable; to quote Mouse directly, it gives Tucker the complex duality of having the most powerful godly parent in the trio vs Hermes cabin is SO full of kids he's just one in a crowd. From there it was just fun to go a little funkier with the others

Last detail I wanted to highlight: their camp necklaces have three beads because the show has three seasons, and the green-yellow-purple coloring is for the trio
