I kind of like how Procrustes again played into this idea of this toxic family the gods have created—I don’t remember them referencing that they’re technically brothers in the book, but you can see Percy feels conflicted to be adding to that family tension

So, I believe changing Medusa into a victim is a little problematic since they have to kill her anyway, and then they don't kill Procrustes despite him murdering people. It was a little strange to me that they changed Hades to being cordial and slightly goofy, since he was more intimidating in the books. However, after thinking about it I think that it's actually accurate to the myths. While, yeah, the Greeks found Hades scary, in his stories he's always very accommodating. He was a very loving husband to Persephone, he let Hercules visit and take things more than once, let Orpheus try to bring his wife back, wasn't involved in the harsh punishments, didn't often get involved in things, etc.
If I could make one change, I'd have him look the same as the books (10 feet tall, black robes, sitting on the throne, 'omg this guy is evil and terrifying') and then the second he talks he acts the same as he did in the episode and then people realize that they got the wrong idea about this guy. Maybe be a little irritated that they're accusing him, but otherwise fine.

this is the first season, their first quest, they should make a lot of mistakes but the show aims at a perfect portrayal where the 12 year old kids are never tricked by millenia old creatures. "well annabeth is so smart it wouldn't make sense if she didn't figure it out!" if we get season three maybe annabeth will know better than to fall of a cliff since she's a daughter of athena. riveting television i tell you. cinemasins ass logic

I fully expect Procrustes to be done better in the show than in the book with how they've set things up already. The question of "what makes a monster" automatically applies because he's just a non-magical human who was cruel enough to get attention from Theseus. In the book, Percy says, "If Crusty were human," Riptide wouldn't kill him. Actually, he was just as human as Gabe, and Percy knows that celestial bronze doesn't only hurt monsters. I wonder if there will be water involved instead.

I find it really weird that the show kept crusty in. Like surely for the sake of run time you could’ve cut him out completely as he has no overarching plot relevance and just make the underworld entrance at the recording studio like in the book.

No, but in PJO 1x07, Percy really rolled up to Crusty's Waterbed Palace like, "Hey, Big Bro, can you do me a solid and gimme a ride to Uncle H's house? No? Oh, too bad....SIKE! LATER LOSER!"
Like he was in true Little Brother form in that scene

I still seriously object to how Rick Riordan treats the monsters in Percy Jackson. I already made a post like this for Medusa, but now I need to make one for Procrustes. Crusty is a menace (he's willing to chop people up so they fit into his waterbeds), but he genuinely seems like he enjoys selling to people. I don't like that all these monsters who seem capable of intelligent thought are all being killed. Surely there must be a better way. You know, it's interesting rereading Percy Jackson and taking the side of the monsters. If you do manage to bring yourself to sympathize with them, the story suddenly seems a lot more nuanced. I still think an anthology series about redeemed monsters would be nice, by the way. It's something I would be interested in, at least.

Kind of mad about the Crusty's scene. Like why did you include it at all. It's like they had a checklist.
"Oh look there is Procrustes and his waterbeds, check it off," but never actually did the scene.
I fully didn't expect them to do the Waterbed Palace scene. And that was okay, dissapointing, but okay.
But then they did show Crusty's on the door, and I got super excited. Percy walks in on his own, already a departure from the book, then straight up just says "hey I know who you are and what you want to do to us. And I won't let you do it." Okay, why are we here then. They just have a very obvious exchange of metaphors then Annabeth pushes him into the trap. They did nothing of the actual scene.
The scene in the books showcased Grover's trusting, Annabeth's suspicion, and most importantly, Percy's cleverness, which, as a newcomer to the mythical world, he doesn't get to display all that often. His ability to think on his feet and find unique ways to manuver out of situations is an important part of Percy's character.
They showed none of that, and included the scene just to include it. Irritating.
