ALSO I just … NEED to mention this creature. LOOK AT HIM. WHAT IS HE. WHO IS HEEE? So this is what is supposed to be Beta Hunter or whatever. Interesting, but even more so that apart from his familial connection to Obron and his eventual bond with Luz (that starts off a bit antagonistic) he is SO different to what ended up in comparison to the other characters. But you know who he does remind me of though?
Red overalls. Blue eyes. JAGGED KNIFE SWORD. Avid witch HATER. ENGLISH?? ANYWAY-
This kiiiind of convinces me that Belos and Philip were originally different characters because ?? What is this. BECAUSE HE JUST STRAIGHT UP SOUNDS LIKE HOW I’D IMAGINE TWEEN PHILIP TO BE LOL a bratty witch hater who is too proud to ask for help, but will happily accept it. Except he would have gotten to actually interact and bond (EEEEP🥹!) with Luz as humans out of place. What a tragedy !!
Tumblr media
He sounds like such a little shit. But he’s cute! I ADORE HIM. All this time I thought William was the original Hunter… but this sounds more like he was the original Philip 😆 but contained in a time capsule instead of allowed to grow into a menace.
Alas, poor William went from witch lunatic, to knight prince, to being eradicated from existence. Such is fate. But parts of him live in Hunter and Philip. But just like the non existent Wittebane story… Won’t stop me from wondering what if !

Carry On Through the Ages (all the way back to Ancient Egypt)
Tumblr media
"A Prophesied Rivalry:
This painting, remarkably well-preserved, was recovered from the tomb of a previously unknown and as-yet unidentified woman of significant power, whose rediscovery has fascinated Egyptologists. Historical analysis suggests she was believed to possess a gift for prophecy, and this artwork is very likely an attempt to illustrate one of her visions.
Here, she and her husband are depicted championing their son, who faces an outsider in combat. The outsider is also supported by an enigmatic figure of seemingly great power, foretelling a great struggle between two mighty forces, though whether these forces were meant to be supernatural or more mundane is not clear.
The dog shown, intriguingly, held a place of honor within the family and was found interred in a nearby chamber. The cat's presence, however, remains enigmatic, as the "Cats vs Dogs" reputation cultivated by these domesticated animals today is not something observed elsewhere in Ancient Egyptian artwork. Noted Egyptologists Miriam Blackwood and Theodore Langston have half-jokingly speculated that its inclusion was a mere artistic preference, hinting at the painter’s fondness for cats."
I've always loved Ancient Egyptian art, ever since childhood. I've wanted to do something like this ever since I first read of Baz's ancestry, so @carryonthroughtheages seemed the best excuse to dabble in this ancient art style.
I talked to @monbons about it and apparently the stars and planets were in alignment that day, because she agreed to collaborate with me. She’s created some absolutely gorgeous fiber art to go along with Natasha’s prophecies. And then she surprised me with a Baz doll, because she is amazing. (I love him so much and we are going to look at fashion books together. It’s going to be awesome.)
This is definitely fanart of both Ancient Egyptian art and Snowbaz. Both are worth diving into if you find yourself curious to know more!

wait. i might sound super fucking stupid but is there any chance be born is just really just mind singing by himself
nowhere was it stated heart or soul sang in the song too, iirc it's just common for ppl to speculate on which of them is singing. even in the lyric video (where in the description chonny jokes about releasing the songs in the wrong order, meaning he already had a good idea of the lore/characters) there is only black lettering upon a white background, which is mind's signature. what if the voice changing is just the equivalent of voice cracking for mind. have we ever thought about that. this is highly embarrassing for him
(edit: hiiii if u see this check out my awesome reblog where i overthink on this way too much ty)

Baz thinks that a hole wants to get bigger.
And like, he’s wrong, not just with the knowledge of how Carry On resolves, but also just. Nature abhors a vacuum. BUT the fact that that’s what he jumps to is. So much. Cause Baz— always hungry, always wanting, always denying himself anything he desires or even the space to want it Baz— of course he thinks that a hole wants to grow. That a void, a need, an emptiness, a want is going to grow. That the space where something should be is going to increase by its nature rather than be filled.

HI so sorry to barge in here unannounced like this but u seem to have a lot more knowledge about japanese language/culture/social etiquette than i do and i've seen u mention dimple's mannerisms in canon once or twice and like . i'd love to hear more abt that if ur willing to ramble for a bit. i've been Very curious just how far dimple's Rudeness goes, but i know very little about the culture. i'm sure some things he does or says seem fairly normal to me but is considered very rude or disrespectful to the characters. no pressure tho ofc :]
hi Rika!! literally drop in anytime! I,, I appreciate this ask so much and will answer as best as I can, but I'm a very new student of Japanese and Japanese culture, so take what I say with a grain of salt! also I personally am going to tag @russenoire to respectfully invite them to partake in this conversation if they think it would be fun (no pressure of course!). they have been studying this much longer than I have :}
putting my thoughts under a cut because !!! I love to ramble!!! note: all of this is based on Dimple's Japanese voice & mannerisms from the anime. I don't have the manga in Japanese yet 🙏
As a preface: Ekubo's direct/rude/familiar speech style is typical in anime and not unheard-of in real life, but it's definitely worth noticing! Mob Psycho 100, particularly, gets a lot of its unique interest out of taking unrealistic anime expectations and saying "HEY pay attention to this, WHY is this happening, this is immature behavior, why are adults in this universe letting this happen", and making it funny and/or serious. So!!! let's dive in.
So, okay, Dimple's mannerisms. The first thing to know is very general. he usually speaks in the casual register (which has a whole distinct vocabulary from the more polite registers: for instance, he tends to end his sentences with "da" rather than "desu", which are both "is" verbs with the exact same meaning, just a different connotation). the casual register is comparatively... direct. Dimple using casual implies that he thinks of himself as on familiar terms with and/or higher in the social hierarchy than whoever he's speaking to. casual Japanese is par for the course in anime in general, especially for people expressing arrogance, like Ekubo does all the time. But still, that's A Choice. it expresses simultaneous superiority (I am allowed to speak to you in informal terms because I'm above you) and also, possibly, desire for closeness (Ekubo speaks to Shigeo in familiar terms like they're brothers).
(Politeness, respect, and distance are linked in Japanese. Casual language isn't always rude, but in the wrong situation, it can be jarring and disrespectful. Using casual Japanese is a sign of confidence and personal closeness in your relationship with someone—new friends will switch from formal to casual language at some point and typically never go back; siblings use casual language with each other as a matter of course. It's very situational.)
The second thing to know is, there are choices of first person pronouns in Japanese!!! And Ekubo's choice is spectacular. He refers to himself as "ore-sama". "ore" (roughly pronounced "o-ray") is one of two typical Japanese casual male pronouns, ore and boku. (the formal first-person pronoun for men is watashi). To my knowledge, "ore" was originally the only casual male pronoun, and then "boku" entered popular use as a more humble option and changed the meaning of the formerly more neutral-sounding "ore" by competing with it, which is fascinating. but I'm getting distracted. "ore" is the more aggressively masculine pronoun; it's considered rough/direct to the point of being rude in many contexts. And Ekubo doesn't just use "ore" (ore is a widely-used choice!), he adds the honorific -sama to the end. This is extremely macho. SUPER arrogant. It tracks with his desire to become a god: -sama is the honorific for kami as well as the honorific for people who are way higher ranked than you. giving someone the honorific -sama expresses a greater gap between you and them than -san does. this is hilarious to me. Dimple is over here referring to himself as 🔥 ME 👑 every time he uses first-person pronouns. (Mob uses boku, btw.) ore-sama isn't not used irl, but it's, uh. highly highly unusual, from what I can tell. sounds like a biker gang boss kind of thing to me—something someone on the fringes of society would use. no shade to those outside "polite society" from me, btw, I'm just stating the general connotation from a majority cultural perspective.
OH AND SPEAKING OF HONORIFICS. I'm guessing you've seen analysis of this before and/or just Get It from cultural osmosis, but Dimple calls Shigeo "Shige-chan" the second time they meet. -chan is a usually-affectionate diminutive usually given to girls younger than yourself or celebrities people find cute; I think they translate it as "li'l Shige" in the English dub? -chan has cutesy connotations and can be infantilizing if it's not used with permission and/or some kind of... y'know... familiarity and understanding between the person giving the honorific and the person being referred to with -chan. it is super disrespectful of Dimple to call Shigeo Shige-chan having just met him, and having gotten off on a terrible foot with Shigeo, no less. what the heck, Ekubo!!
And then Dimple proceeds to call him just Shigeo with no honorific at all, which is ALSO disrespectful?? given that Dimple doesn't know him, really?? too familiar, too abrupt! As a strange adult, he should be calling him Shigeo-kun! But he's treating Mob like a little brother. (For instance, as the older brother, Shigeo has the right to call Ritsu by the first name and only the first name, whereas Ritsu usually calls Shigeo "Nii-san". To my knowledge, that's not unnatural in Japanese the way it would be in English; it's not Ritsu reiterating their bond every five seconds, it's just the Expected Thing for the younger brother to refer to the older brother as "Nii-san" out of respect. you'll see the Shiratori brothers, Daichi and Kaito, doing the same thing if you pay attention. to each other, they are "Kaito" and "Nii-san". BUT ANYWAY)
Another Dimple regularly does that reads as arrogant/direct to me is sometimes speaking in a Really Low Voice. This is where my knowledge gets hazy—it's more about pronunciation and accent than "behavior" as such, so bear with me, but the general pitch of one's voice is important in Japanese. Girls and women tend to pitch their voices higher than their natural range in Japanese, especially when doing "polite" or "customer service voice". Japanese speaking men often raise their pitches for politeness/to express humility or a conciliatory attitude too, even though it's not as extreme as with women. And men who are performing aggression will often lower their pitch on purpose, creating a growling kind of effect. Dimple does this a lot. Let me see if I can embed a video of him doing it here
YES. OKAY. Listen to the difference between his mental voice and his spoken voice here!! Dimple uses a higher pitch when talking to Mob because he's trying to ingratiate himself with Mob, but then when he's muttering to himself, he reverts back to his evil-spirit, gang-boss, stereotypically-yakuza-sounding kind of... deep growl.
Relatedly, Ekubo rolls his r's. he rolls them hard. That's a really rough way of speaking, definitely not typical in "polite" Japanese. people learning Japanese are told not to roll their r's unless they want to sound like they're yakuza wannabes. (He also, to my ear, tends to kind of roll his vowels?? he puts his voice backwards in his mouth, pronouncing things either near his nose or deep in his throat, and kind of crushes them with his mouth as they emerge. I don't know if there's a word for this, but to my synesthesia it looks like his voice goes spiky. it's a COMPLETELY different sound than the smooth pronunciation of polite Tokyo-style Japanese. I don't actually have a point this is just interesting to me)
That's about all I have for now! I'm fascinated by Dimple's speaking style and what it says about him. Sorry this was more about accent than behavior—as far as behavior goes, I mean, he's weird. he's weird! as a ghost, he's not really a part of society and he just wanders around making fun of people, which would be rude in any culture. I have a whole Other rant about how Dimple improved as a person after Reigen started treating him as an employee and how that adds to MP100's theme of society and connection, but now is not the time. I hope this has been interesting to you!! Thank you for the ask!

ARUPEK Making it through one day Epoch makin' with flutter kicks Even living in a bird cage can feel like a city
PIKERO The day and night circling round and round
ARUPEK A fun new experience, Pitch, Chap, Ran
PIKERO Targets all scheduled out TUXAM Longing for the dance floor ARUPEK A peaceful everyday life PIKERO Free to perceive things your own way
TUXAM Ah, at the bottom of the deep waters No one would be able to hear you PIKERO The weak voice being let out forms a bubble ARUPEK Now all you have to do is ascend
ALL Floating in the sky, swimming in the wind No matter how far, just keep going TUXAM The kindness we've received PIKERO The aspirations as well ARUPEK They'll become our wings
ALL Don't care about what they say, even if it's ugly Passion burns up despite the struggles clawing at your feet ARUPEK Like bubbles on a splash of water Rise into the sky
PIKERO I'm not like those guys ARUPEK Using fruits as a midsummer greeting PIKERO Noisily crawling ARUPEK A light that's like a paddle TUXAM There's still plenty of room for growth, just stay tuned
PIKERO (FLY) When times get hard TUXAM (SKY) Without saying a word ARUPEK (CRY) I'll be right by your side And we'll miss out on the evening rain
ARUPEK I can't help being all alone Why do you have just one wing I just can't fly that well Hey, that's why I want you to take my hand
ARUPEK Blending with the colors, going round and round You did this, you gave me a reason Poorly flapping my wings, and in the blink of an eye My heart flutters
ALL Even if you can't fly, you can still spread your wings Like a wandering bird soaring through the sky TUXAM Kick and jump over the current situation PIKERO Decorate a surface of water ARUPEK Even if it seems useless
ALL I won't let things end like this Reach your hand out and touch the sky ARUPEK Someday, I'll be your wings you leave in my care
ARUPEK Like bubbles flying over water Ascend into the sky

Enneagram analysis: Beca Mitchell
Beca is probably the easiest of all the characters to categorize in an enneagram type or enneagram type story. She’s the main character, we learn more about her than any of the other characters through her relationships with them, and we see most of it through her point of view.
To get a closer look of what someone’s type might actually be, you have to look at what makes them tick, what shaped them into who they are today. Beca’s character makes this easy, because we know what her childhood looked like: her parents split in a difficult divorce and her father found a new love. There’s a direct scene that proves this was when Beca started to shut people out; after her falling out with everyone she was close with, she visits her dad and they have a heart-to-heart. It isn’t until this moment Beca actually opens herself up to him and finally drops her mask.
Whatever happened between her and her dad is in the past and up to interpretation, but the outcome of the divorce remained the same. There was no space for vulnerability. Only her craft, her music.
This makes Beca Mitchell a type 8.
8s are not looking for approval. They challenge worldviews, they’re confrontational, they have a devil-may-care attitude. Beca Mitchell not only mouths off her father, but she challenges Aubrey whenever the opportunity presents itself (both figures of authority in their own regard). I don’t think she even does this consciously, she just can’t help herself – after all, what’s the point of being a part of something if you’re not allowed to make your voice be heard?
One could also argue she’s not looking for Jesse’s approval, at least not until the last arc of the first movie. She jokes about her parent’s divorce, makes fun of his interest in movies, and dismisses his advances every single time. And even in the very last scene of PP1, when the Bellas revel in the applause on-stage, Beca rushes towards Jesse and tells him to “shut up, nerd”. She doesn’t care about his approval, or the audience’s for that matter. All she cares about is getting what she worked hard for.
Another 8 stereotype, which is the weakest link imo, is that 8 often gets stereotyped as “the hero”. Beca is literally the main character of the franchise, slowly accepting leadership over a group she never wanted a part in, lifting them up to be more of their true selves; to find their own passion in music. Never straying from her path, entirely, because no one had to tell her what she wanted to be; she’s always known that from the start.
However, despite her being a type 8, I would argue she lives a type 4 narrative.
Why?
No, not because she’s an artist. Although that is part of her central character, Beca Mitchell lives through a type 4 narrative through the entire trilogy because she wears her pain on her sleeve. Yes, this is in direct conflict with her being a type 8 and keeping her emotions behind closed doors, but hear me out: pain is easier to express than anger and sadness and joy. In the first movie, Beca often cracks a joke about her parents’ failed marriage, her broken relationship with her dad (directly to his face!), and even her frustration with the Bellas (primarily Aubrey). She does this because she relishes in this pain. It’s easier to joke about. It’s a mask.
In reality however? Beca doesn’t use it to fuel her artistry. The mixes she makes do not reflect her pain, it’s a means of escape from them. She loves doing it. People tell her she’s good at it. Until someone tells her she’s not. And what does she do with the pain of rejection? She drowns in it, completely fixated on the criticism and failing to put herself in a new project. This is type 4-coded, yes – Beca suddenly gets told she’s not unique and therefore she cannot use that as a shield anymore. However, her art was never about her emotions, so she isn’t forced to come to terms with her pain and problems being… her pain and problems instead of her identity.
Ultimately though, she’s not a type 4. Type 4 characters and their growth are about a cry for help, sometimes having a savior in their story to pick up their broken pieces, and that’s not Beca Mitchell. She knows who she is, knows what she wants to be, and that goes beyond her identity of hurt.
Side note: if you read Beca as a lesbian instead of a sapphic also interested in men, you could argue her relationship with Jesse is 4 coded as well. Actively choosing the guy you have nothing in common with (besides a capella) over the girl who is interested in your hobbies and your talent? Reeks of self-sabotage, and perfectly fits the narrative of a type 4.

I still have to write a proper analysis post about it but because I reblogged my post again about leaving the griffons with the Wardens bc I was thinking about how it intersects with some fic ideas
in addition to what I said about how I don't think that choice negates the idea that the griffons can be other things because the Wardens are also changing, I think the choice also has an undercurrent of acknowledging that the Wardens have ALREADY changed. they are not the Order and people who hurt the griffons, and this choice reflects that and reflects a trust that the Order will continue to change and grow into something capable of stewarding the griffons properly and as something beyond a weapon.
I think the choice still holds true in the theme of the griffons can be something other than hunters. as I said in the other post, the Wardens are themselves facing that very question and are exploring it under the leadership of Evka and Antoine, people who don't see themselves as just a blade. (Davrin is also exploring this for himself!)
either way, the griffons will be well cared for, and they will find a changing place in the world—whether they discover that in Arlathan as protectors of its forests or discover that with a changing Wardens without any Archdemons to Blight, who will be turning toward nurturing what was lost in a similar line of work anyway—it's really more about types of change in this situation, and how we all interact with that, and what one is choosing to move forward into.
but, choosing the griffons remain with the Wardens isn't really just refusing a change but is something about the mechanics of change, and acknowledging that they already have—in the time since the Fourth Blight, in the time since the beginning of the game even.
it also speaks about how "are we required to be what we've been made into" about the Wardens themselves: are they always going to be people who lost this relationship and destroyed them? do we believe and trust they can and have already changed into something more than that? do we trust that change enough to allow them and the griffons back into one another's lives? it's almost a forgiveness.
