Captain Gee, of The Satan's Knitwear. A terrifying but magnificent Ship, with an infamously loyal and rowdy crew.
The captain keeps getting fatally stabbed by rival pirates bc she giggles at inappropriate moments and misunderstands social cues. The devil refuses to allow her into hell tho bc they are fwb and bc he'd be out of a job. So she continues to sail the seven seas and cause chaos.

The Story Behind the Pirate Skull-and-Crossbones Symbol
Tumblr media
The skull-and-crossbones is an emblem that instantly conjures images of pirates, treasure hunts, and the high seas. But have you ever wondered where this iconic symbol came from and what it truly means? Let's dive into the history of the Jolly Roger, a flag that's both terrifying and fascinating.
The Early Origins of the Skull-and-Crossbones
The skull-and-crossbones symbol wasn’t always associated with pirates. Its origins can be traced back to medieval Europe, where it was used as a memento mori—a reminder of death. The image of a skull with crossed bones symbolized the fleeting nature of life and the inevitability of death.
Fast forward a few centuries, and this haunting symbol would be co-opted by pirates, who turned it into a tool for fear and intimidation. By the late 17th century, pirate ships started flying flags featuring skulls, bones, and other ominous symbols to signal to other ships that they meant business.
How the Jolly Roger Became Famous
The term Jolly Roger is believed to have come from the French word jolie rouge ("pretty red"), referring to the red flags used by pirates. But it’s the black flag with the skull-and-crossbones that became most famous.
Notable pirates like Blackbeard (Edward Teach) and Bartholomew Roberts made sure their flags were unforgettable. Blackbeard’s flag, for instance, featured a skull holding an hourglass, symbolizing the limited time left for their enemies. These flags weren’t just decorations—they were psychological weapons meant to terrify.
What the Symbol Stands For
For pirates, the skull-and-crossbones was more than just a scary image. It was a representation of:
Freedom: Pirates rejected authority and embraced a life of lawlessness. The skull-and-crossbones became a symbol of rebellion.
Brotherhood: The pirate crew was united by their flag, fighting for the same cause.
Mortality: Pirates were constantly at risk of death, and the skull was a reminder that life could end at any moment.
From Pirates to Pop Culture
Though the golden age of piracy ended long ago, the skull-and-crossbones symbol still has a huge cultural impact. You see it everywhere—on pirate movies, TV shows like Pirates of the Caribbean, and in punk rock fashion. The Jolly Roger has become a global symbol of adventure, danger, and sometimes, even rebellion against the system.
It’s crazy to think that something originally designed to strike fear into the hearts of enemies has become so widely recognized and even celebrated.
Fun Pirate Facts
Some pirates used red flags instead of black to signal that no mercy would be given.
The skull-and-crossbones wasn’t always shown immediately—pirates would sometimes use false flags to trick their targets into getting closer before revealing their true colors.
The British Navy eventually adopted the skull-and-crossbones for ships that carried plague victims, further associating it with death and danger.
Why We Still Love the Skull-and-Crossbones
What makes the skull-and-crossbones so enduring? It’s not just the connection to pirates—it’s the symbol of freedom, adventure, and defiance. Whether you’re into history or just love a good rebellious emblem, the Jolly Roger continues to captivate us, reminding us of a time when pirates ruled the seas, living life on their own terms.
