I'm not sharing this on our other platforms yet cause we're still doing final tweaks to some of these designs, BUT here are the almost-done designs for the enamel pins we'll be crowdfunding on Kickstarter starting in a week!
You can follow the pre-launch page for this campaign here. The campaign is launching in March 15th.
The enamel pins will have antique gold metal, as shown in the pictures, and approximately these colors (tweaks, as I said, pending). top row is chimera (bi flag), dragon (nb flag), and nessie (mlm flag). Bottom row is phoenix (wlw flag), pegasus (trans flag), and cerberus (ace flag, demi and a few other flags also use those colors).
We've got more flags in earlier planning as stretch goals if we hit our initial funding goal of $3,000.
Each of these designs will also be available as a die-cut sticker, with the colors a bit more nuanced since, like, stickers don't have the same pigment restrictions that enamel pins do.
Pippin Peacock has done such an amazing job on these designs, I am so so so excited to be bringing these to life with them.

B A S I C S
Name: W'pip Raham (ex Tia)
Nicknames: Pip, Pippin, Pippy, the Lad
Age: ~26-27
Nameday: 25th Sun of the 5th Umbral Moon
Race: Seeker of the Sun Miqo'te
Gender: Male
Orientation: Some degree of bi or queer with no apparent preference in gender/sex (aka whatever he can get)
Profession: Pit fighter
P H Y S I C A L     A S P E C  T S
Hair: A sandy blonde mop that's an amalgamation of wave, frizz, and poof. He generally wears it tied back (as seen in game) but had braids as a boy (he doesn't know how to braid, his mother did it for him). His hair is almost never down, save for sleeping.
Eyes: left: pumpkin orange, right: desert yellow
Skin: Deep tan, freckled.
Tattoos/scars: No tattoos, but many many scars--most of which are minor and not worth mention. A large scar cuts across the bridge of his nose diagonally, is mostly healed over his cheek, but still visible on his jawline.
F A M I L Y
Parents: Both alive, his mother is W'Ahra and his father is unnamed. Part of me wants to flesh out his backstory entirely, and the other part is lazy but pretends its left open for potential RP.
Siblings: Initially I had Pip be the only kit of W'Ahra but I'm thinking of changing this. He, of course, has several siblings in his tribe and a few brothers but I think having grown with an immediate brother (to W'Ahra) can help back his pervasive competitiveness.
Grandparents: In the tribe, yes but nothing specific written out.
In-laws and Other: Unmarried. Roric Raham, his late tutor/mentor was the father his Nunh wasn't.
Pets: None
S K I L L S
Abilities: Pip has no magical affinities or abilities. The only thing of note in his skill in hand-to-hand combat.
Hobbies: Fishin', drankin', trainin', being a nuisance to the public of Ul'dah.
T R A I T S
Most Positive Trait: Social, agreeable, welcoming.
Most Negative Trait: Annoying, constant peacocking, unsympathetic.
L I K E S
Colors: Loves a little color, especially warm or earth tones--gold, yellows, oranges, tans, greens, etc.
Smells: He loves the smell of water--sea, pond, river--the fishier the better. Leather and tack. Fresh and delicate perfumes/soaps like orange blossom, honey, etc.
Textures: Leather, hemp, linen, warm sand under the toes.
Drinks: He's never met a drink he didn't like.
O T H E R    D E T A I L S
Smokes: Doesn't.
Drinks: Coffee in the mornings, though not opposed to tea. Water. Otherwise, something alcoholic.
Drugs: He's been known to use elixirs and potions during his fights. He doesn't ask what's in 'em but he has some ideas.
Mount Issuance: He canonically does not have a mount or anything of that nature. But in game and OOC I typically use the Flying Cumulus on him.
Been Arrested: Somehow, no.

What Pets I Think LOtR Characters Would Have
may or may not be a collab with @aromanticmara
Legolas: cat (a rag doll) - it’s stealthy but not the brightest
Gimli: dog (a huge one like a St. Bernard)
Eowyn: dog (borzoi) - a little odd looking from afar but could keep up with her, they low key look like Faramir
Arwen: cat (classic black cat)
Aragorn: horse (because of course he does)
Gandalf: has no pet but feeds strays from time to time
Boromir: no pets (has Merri and Pippin)
Frodo: a rabbit
Sam: co-parents the rabbit with Frodo but lives in constant fear of it eating his plants
Elrond: was against Arwen getting a cat but now it’s his bestie
Galadriel: a unicorn (deadass just a unicorn)
Thandruil: absolutely hates Legolas’ cat and won’t even pretend to like it
Faramir: his dad got him no pet so he had an imaginary dog
Pippin: raccoon (he took it in thinking it was a cat)
Merri: worms (like legit a worm farm) - he feeds them fungi and stuff to scavenge during all of the hobbit meals
Saruman: snake (definitely some spooky albino one that stares into your soul)
Gollum: his precious
Sauron: the Nazgûls
Tom Bombadil: an owl (old and wise like him) - it’s a very cheery owl though
Goldberry: peacock (she’s just that flashy and Tom wound he deny her that)
Bonus Characters ~ The Hobbit (books and movies)
Bilbo: had a pig but it ran away (Gandalf spooked it)
Radagast: flying squirrel (nothing fancy like a sugar glider, a plain flying squirrel) - takes in all animals though
Tauriel: ferrets (has a whole family of them) - talks shit about the other elves to them
The Dwarves: move around to much to have any permanent pets but they find friends along the road
Bard’s family: birds (definitely some type of song bird for the kids) - that thing never shuts up and it annoys him to no end

Lotr headcannons I have
Aragorn
He needs to be reminded to bathe or he won't fucking do it
Straight, but he is the biggest ally you will find
Had an emo phase as a teenager and wrote a lot of poetry
Talks about Arwen about 80% of the time. It should be annoying but is actually really sweet
Every year he dons his ranger outfit and hangs out in the woods for a few days to get a break from the stress of being King for a bit
Legalised gay marriage as his first act as King
Doesn't drink enough water
Always tells people they need to make sure to eat and relax but he doesn't do either of those himself
Boromir
Carries candy with him everywhere because Faramir loves candy and he just never got out of the habit of bringing it with him
Thinks of Merry and Pippin as his younger brothers
Aro/ace
Doesn't really understand romance but also gets really excited for his friends' relationships
Secretly loves when the hobbits complain about being too tired to walk because it means he gets to carry them and it makes him feel needed
Talks a lot about Faramir
Loves big dogs. He has several at a time and enjoys taking them on walks and spoiling them
His father owns peacocks and Boromir got bit by one once and now he is deathly afraid of them
Legolas
Used to talk shit about the rest of the fellowship to Aragorn before learning that Frodo and Boromir both speak elvish too
Makes up silly songs and sings them in an obnoxious voice to annoy everyone else
Although some of the others in the fellowship might think of him as cool and serious at first, he actually can't take anything seriously
Somehow always has flowers in his hair, even during the winter
Doesn't tell anyone he is a prince at first because he doesn't want them to expect him to act like a prince
The youngest child with several older brothers. He just gives me youngest child vibes
Doesn't understand how mortal ages work so treats everyone like a child
Vibes well with Pippin
Overly enthusiastic about pine nuts
Gandalf
Can't actually turn anyone into an animal. He just uses this to threaten children so they won't misbehave
Somehow, Pippin finds out and decides to be even more annoying now that he knows the threat is empty
Gandalf starts threatening to beat him with his staff instead
Loves going to the Shire because hobbits throw the best parties and because they all think of him as a weird old man who does magic tricks. The outside world place expectations on him so it is nice to go to the Shire to have some fun
Is very fond of children of all types and believes the best use of his magic is to entertain the children with it
While he views the rest of the hobbits in the fellowship as adults who can make their own decisions, he knows Pippin is still a child and so treats him as he would his own grandchild.
Feels really guilty for everything that happened to the hobbits and believes it is his fault
Constantly makes jokes about having died
Gimli
Talks shit about the rest of the fellowship to himself. Thankfully, no one understands him
Understands the importance of keeping the dwarves' secrets secret, but also taught Legolas every swear word in his language because he thinks it is funny
Cares quite a bit about his appearance, especially his beard, and carries a comb in his belt right beside his throwing axes
Legolas is the only one allowed to touch his hair. Everyone else doesn't wash their hands enough, according to him
Kind of a mom friend
After the quest, he visits the Shire and makes sure to go to every tavern to try out all the ale
Once got in a very heated argument with Merry about pipeweed and it was so bad Aragorn had to intervene
Sam
Doesn't trust anyone but himself to cook
Bisexual icon
Also polyamorous
Married to Rosie and Frodo
Is super strong because of all the gardening work he does
Incredibly fond of chickens. He gets a few chickens when they return back to the Shire and he loves them so much.
Knows a lot about flower language and always gives people flowers that mean something
Makes the best chicken pot pie in all the Shire. He knows this because he won a prize for it at the Fair in Michel Delving
Really really loves elves and learns elvish so he can speak to them. He practices with Legolas every time he is over
Like Gimli, is a mom friend. If he so much as guesses someone might be sick, he fusses over them and makes them soup and doesn't allow them to get out of bed until he is convinced they are well
Gets super embarrassed when people treat him like a hero, but also secretly enjoys it and knows he deserves it
Always grows too much zucchini and when the harvesting season comes around everyone tries to discreetly avoid him so he can't give them a thousand zucchinis
Frodo
Feels really bad about how he used to steal Farmer Maggot's crops so now he leaves more crops in the fields any time he passes by the farm. Farmer Maggot caught him doing it once and was really confused when Frodo explained his method behind "reverse stealing"
Asexual
Went through an emo phase when he was a teenager
Enjoys his reputation for being odd. It makes him proud to inherit Bilbo's title of Mad Baggins
Is very good at swimming. He doesn't do it often and was scared of water for the while after his parents drowned, but he is a strong swimmer and fast too
Enjoys making bread. It makes him feel strong to use his hand after the quest and kneading bread is the perfect way to do it
Enjoys hosting grand parties with lots of food and dancing
Spends a lot of money on repairing roads and bridges anytime he hears they need fixing
Writes stories all the time
Likes to climb trees
He has a lot of bad days where he can't get out of bed, so he makes sure to really enjoy the good days. On good days, he invites friends over, or bakes pastries, or dances with Sam and Rosie
Owns the grumpiest, bitchiest cat in the whole world. Sam jokingly calls it Gollum and it responds only to that now
Merry
Had a huge crush on Éowyn
Really likes girls who are strong and stubborn
Straight, but he gives me trans vibes
A total nerd
Knows literally everything there is to know about pipeweed and will tell you all about it whether you are interested or not
Has very strong opinions on most things and cannot be swayed from them
Used to lie and say Pippin was his brother because he was sad they were just cousins
Very cunning and comes up with a lot of schemes and plans. He is good at not getting caught
Has always held an interest for herbs but becomes even more interested after his time spent in the House of Healing
Learns Rohhiric. At first it is to impress Éowyn, but then because he finds it interesting
Can't sing but does it anyway
Owns lots of ponies. He allows all the children he knows to name them
Wears giant round glasses and think they make him look cool and smart even though they actually make him look like a total geek
One time he broke a flowerpot at Bag End and blamed it on Pippin and then cried later because he felt bad
Makes about a thousand cookies every year around Yule
Pippin
Insists he is taller than Merry even though he knows deep down it isn't true
Dyslexic
Bisexual
Super gender non conforming. He wears skirts sometimes because he like how he looks in them.
Used to let his sisters play dress-up and tea party with him as a kid because he wanted to be included in their games
Thinks Boromir is so cool and wants to be like him
Gandalf called him a little shit once and he has been chasing that high ever since
Very shy around girls he fancies but is painfully obvious around boys
He had a crush on Aragorn for like, a day, but then he made them march through a marsh and the crush went away instantly
Used to hang around Bag End in the summertime so he could watch Sam roll his sleeves up
Had a huge crush on Faramir and was low key jealous when he got married
Honestly he gets a crush on every mildly attractive person he meets
Plays a bunch of different instruments
Decent at art and likes to sketch
Likes to have odd pets like frogs and rats and fish
Was born early and got sick often as a child
He really loves Gandalf and views him as a grandfather, despite how much he likes to get on his nerves
Sometimes, when he is lonely, he talks to Boromir in hopes that wherever he is, he is listening
Met his wife Diamond when she nearly ran him over with her wagon
Even when he becomes Thain he never gets out of the habit of pranking people
Whenever he tells stories about the quest he adds new embellishments and at this point it is so far from what originally happened but it is way more entertaining and children love to listen to it
Is banned from two different inns in Michel Delving
Éowyn
She can actually cook, it's just Rohan has really shitty cuisine. I bet they eat lutefisk and that pickled shark soup stuff they used to eat over in Iceland
If, after the war is over, something happened and her friends were in danger, she would not hesitate to go into battle again, though she is glad that they are in a time of peace now because she knows war is awful now
Doesn't know how to read because Rohhiric is not a written language, so Faramir teaches her so she can send letters to her friends all over the world and they are really proud of her progress
Finds she likes weaving and makes a huge tapestry telling the stories from the war. It hangs in Minas Tirith in the throne room
Becomes good friends with Arwen and talks about herb lore with her a lot and they totally lock eyes with eachother to give eachother The Look every time a guy says something stupid in their presence. You know the Look.
Definitely still carries a sword around with her while travelling but never really wants to use it
She becomes more comfortable in her life after she finds friends and family, and she works together with Aragorn and Éomer to help pass laws that give women more freedom (allowing divorce, banning marriages to children, allowing women to have control over their finances, etc) they are both happy to change the laws, although Éomer has to confront some of his prejudices first
Faramir
I dont know what this man is but cis ain't it
Was questioning whether he was gay for a while because he wasn't attracted to women (though he wasn't attracted to men, either) and then he met Éowyn and realized he was just demiromantic
Loves giving Éowyn flowers and planning picnic dates for the two of them
This man is a romantic
He writes her poetry and leaves it around their room for her to find after he teaches her to read
Worried about whether he will be a good dad or not but he gets the hang of it really easily and is a really really good father
Was aware of Pippin's crush on him during the war and just tried to ignore it because it was awkward to think about it
Started carrying candies around in his pockets in remembrance of Boromir

Yarn Recommendations for Big Halflings
This post contains a running list of yarn recommendations for the Halflings pattern. Pattern is sold here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/WestfarthingCrochet
Tumblr media
General recommendations for custom/DnD characters:
For a good, slightly thicker worsted yarn (ideal for hair base, cloaks, etc,) you can can’t beat Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice. The colors are diverse, rare and gorgeous (but, keep in mind, tend to be noticeably lighter and less vibrant in person than they are on the listing!)
For a good, slightly less bulky worsted yarn (ideal for skin and clothing,) I like Loops & Threads Impeccable. The colors are not quite as varied as Vanna’s Choice, but they have a good selection. This is also some of the softest acrylic worsted I’ve found.  The downside is that the colors looks VERY different in person than they do on the online listing. Go to Michael’s in person for this one, if possible.
For clothing, I like Lion Brand Heartland can’t be beat. It is a very smooth acrylic that works up smoother and more supple than any other acrylic I’ve found. The colors are just amazing. They are very true to the online listings. The mix of colors gives a beautiful texture to the clothing. When possible, I make all clothing items out of this yarn. Fortunately, it comes in tons of colors, so working with it exclusively is often possible :)
My choices for pictured halflings:
Skin Tones: Loops and Threads Impeccable (Frodo: Heather, Sam and Bilbo: Golden Beige. But tbh these two colors are almost identical) Hair base on head (worsted): Lion Brand Vanna's Choice (Frodo: Chocolate Brown, Sam/Bilbo: Honey) Hair (Fuzzy/Eyelash): JubileeYarn 100g Soft Touch Fuzzy Fur (Frodo: Brown, Sam/Bilbo: Bronze) Trousers: Lion Brand Heartland (Frodo: Sequoia, Sam: Mammoth Cave, Bilbo: Bryce Canyon) Shirt: Lion Brand Vanna's Choice (Sam: Linen, Frodo: Asparagus Green. Note: The latter looks green on the listing but it's really a very pale cool cream tone.) Loops and Threads Impeccable (Bilbo: Aran) Vest: Lion Brand Heartland (Frodo: Yosemite, Sam: Grand Canyon), Loops and Threads Impeccable (Bilbo: Forest) Coat: Lion Brand Heartland (Sam: Smokey Mountain, Bilbo: Badlands), Red Heart Soft (Frodo: Chocolate)
Cloak: Red Heart Super Saver (Medium Thyme)

DK Weight Hobbits
Skin Tones: Premier Anti-Pilling DK Solids (Parchment) Hair base on head (worsted): Premier Anti-Pilling DK Solids (Merry: Straw, Pippin/Sam/Bilbo: Boysenberry, Frodo: Black Walnut ) Hair (Fuzzy/Eyelash): JubileeYarn 100g Soft Touch Fuzzy Fur (Merry: Bronze Frodo: Brown, Sam/Pippin: Bronze but dyed to darken it! I used Rit Dye More to alter the color) Trousers: Scheepjes Catona (Merry: Root Beer, Pippin: Dark Olive, Frodo: Black Coffee, Sam: Anthracite, Bilbo: Hazelnut) Shirt: Premier Anti-Pilling DK Solids (Merry/Frodo/Bilbo: Linen, Pippin: Mist, Sam: Meadow.) Vest: Hobbii Amigo (Merry: Curry, Frodo: Cognac, Sam: Gray Melange), Premier Anti-Pilling DK Solids (Bilbo: Fern Green) Coat: Premier Anti-Pilling DK Solids (Merry: Fern Green, Pippin: Peacock), Hobbii Amigo (Frodo: Chocolate, Sam: Walnut)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tumblr media
Yarn recs from gurumiville (IG): This Frodo was made with sport weight yarns and stands approx 10 inches/25-26cm tall. Brands used were: Alize Cotton Gold and Yarnart Jeans. Hair is Yarnart Mink.

Tumblr media
Bilbo by ankostoffarten (IG)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Additional: I have not made Merry and Pippin, but they could both be made with the Hobbits Main pattern. If I did make them (I’ve certainly thought out it!) I would probably use the same skin/hair tones as I use for Sam, plus:
Trousers: Lion Brand Heartland (Merry: Joshua Tree) Red Heart Soft yarn (Pippin: Chocolate) Shirt: Lion Brand Vanna's Choice (Pippin: Linen) Loops and Threads Impeccable (Merry: Aran) Vest: Lion Brand Heartland (Merry: Canyonland) Coat: Lion Brand Heartland (Pippin: Glacier Bay) I’m really not sure about Merry’s coat. Maybe Caron Simply Soft in Dark Sage?
Cloak: Red Heart Super Saver (Mocha)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tumblr media
Merry and Pippin by u/Rindereth (Reddit)
Merry: Vanna’s Choice in Chocolate for the trousers/suspenders. Vanna’s Choice in Linen for the shirt. Caron Simply Soft in Sage for the coat. Heartland in Canyon Lands for the vest. Super Saver in Buff for the skin. Homespun in Bourbon for the hair.
Pippin: Vanna’s Choice in Chocolate for the trousers/suspenders. Vanna’s Choice in Asparagus for the shirt. Impeccable in Sapphire for the coat. Heartland in Grand Canyon for the scarf. Super Saver in Buff for the skin. Homespun in Wild Fire for the hair.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tumblr media
Frodo by @biroseme
Yarnart Jeans for body and clothes and Yarnart Mink for hair.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My choices for lady halflings:
Skin Tones: Loops and Threads Impeccable (Heather) Hair base on head (worsted): Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice (Lobelia: Black, Rosie: Honey) Hair: Lion Brand Homespun (Lobelia: Midnight Stripes, Rosie: Barley) Skirt: Loops & Threads Impeccable (Lobelia: Grass, Rosie: Forest) Petticoat: Loops & Threads Impeccable (Lobelia: Aran,) Lion Brand Vanna's Choice (Rosie: Asparagus Green) Bodice: Red Heart Comfort (Lobelia: Melon,) Lion Brand Heartland (Rosie: Glacier Bay and Grand Canyon for the main bodice, Lake Clark  for the edging)
NOTE: I’m only so-so about this color choice for Lobelia. I have only ever found this color in a MASSIVE skein, so I have been trying to use it up for a while. I expect there are better choices out there for this.
Apron: Knit Picks Mighty Stitch (Lobelia: Cream,) Lion Brand Heartland (Rosie: Yellowstone)
Lobelia’s Shawl: Big Twist Value Worsted in Pale Yellow
Lobelia’s Hat: Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Mustard for the top/ruffle. Impeccable in Grass for the brim. Mighty Stitch in Fairy Tale for the ribbon.

Lauren Patten hits like a hurricane in “You Oughta Know” from Broadway’s Jagged Little Pill
Alanis Morrissette’s "You Oughta Know” is one of the biggest songs from one of the biggest albums in history, 1995′s Jagged Little Pill, with over 33 million copies sold, so it’s easy to understand why you might think you know enough about this song to skip this video.
Trust me, you don’t. TURN THIS UP.
As part of a Broadway play that went on pandemic hiatus not long after opening, not enough people got to see it in person. NBC aired a broadcast of musical numbers done literally in the streets of New York City’s Theater District, worth watching in the usual places (Peacock, Hulu, etc), and in clips on YouTube. It was part of a fundraising effort for the entire Broadway community (not just performers, but crafts people, ticket takers, you name it), and there were quite a few highlights -- but none as high as this.
The play Jagged Little Pill isn’t based on the album in the way a conventional jukebox musical might be. Rather, the story by Oscar-winner Diablo Cody is all original, using the songs from the album as resources to support the story in the ways that all musicals do, not just jukebox ones. It’s remarkable to me how well it works across the board. Jagged Little Pill was nominated for 15 Tonys this year, and I anticipate updating this post soon with all the awards this will definitely win. I’m counting on Lauren Patten being one of them, but she won’t be the only one.
In the original version of this particular song, the singer attempts to hold a male ex accountable “for the mess you left when you went away” to be with another woman. In the play, the ex is a woman who has left the singer for a man, and Lauren Patten’s performance is devastating, with a physicality that adds new dimensions to the song’s already intense emotions.
The wonderful thing about this performance is that it exists at all. Performing it in the literal street adds a viscerality to it, but wowza, I sure hope they make a movie of the play as directed and staged by Diane Paulus (already a Tony winner for her 2013 revival of Pippin). There are a couple of cell phone videos of this song (and others from the play) on YouTube, but none really convey the impact of the full scene. This photo comes closer. It’s more like a rock concert than a play, and was bringing audiences to their feet every night.
Tumblr media
The secret weapon of Jagged Little Pill, both the album and the play, isn’t the catharsis of its rage. It’s healing through empathy. That’s really what “You Oughta Know” is about -- you never thought about how your actions affected me, so “I’m here / to remind you.” She’s demanding empathy.
Alanis’s original might be as hot a fireball of rage as anyone has ever recorded, and Lauren’s version is downright nuclear. I don’t want to skip past that to get to the healing supplied by the rest of the album and stage play. Healing doesn’t work that way. You have to go allll the way through the pain first, and there really is an awful lot of wonder on the other side of it in Jagged Little Pill (both of them) that we don’t talk about nearly enough.
I hope that the power of this performance will draw you back into a record you only thought you remembered, if you’ve managed to catch up with it at all. I know that a lot of you reading this weren’t born in 1995, or were maybe kids. You’re busy, I get it. There’s a lot of stuff to listen to. Especially in the context of tumblr, though, it’s worth remembering that Alanis was all of 19 when she wrote and recorded it!
Yet Jagged Little Pill isn’t just one of the biggest sellers of all time. It’s one one of the smallest handful of best of all time, too -- and certainly among the most humane and hopeful.
Jagged Little Pill has been one of my most treasured musical companions for the past 25 years. I hope you get to experience it all soon, too, or re-experience it if it’s been a while. Lauren Patten’s take on “You Oughta Know” is a fine place to start.

Day 10! Describe your characters relationships with each other and/or if you've already done that, then which relationship is the most enjoyable to write?
Arthur - Guinevere - Lancelot: they're married, and are very much in love with each other. They wade through all the rumours and nasty comments, about how this sort of relationship isn't supposed to work, about how one simply has to be a third wheel, etc. They're stronger for it, honestly. They help each other work through their individual problems, their traumas, and are happy to co-parent Mordred and Galahad. Their relationship is built on love, trust, respect, and communication.
Mordred-Galahad: love at first sight, and growing up close to each other only fueled the attraction. They're the closest of friends and always seem to know what the other is thinking. Some people assume they are brothers, despite their differing appearances, but they are more than that. They're soulmates.
Arthur-Mordred-Morgana: They aren't really one functional familial unit, but Arthur makes sure that Morgana is happy and fulfilled at Camelot, very much seeing her as his elder sister rather than a lover (that whole mess was very awkward to untangle), and Mordred harbours love for the both of them. As he grows older, he sees Arthur's imperfections, but also recognizes that the Boy King didn't have any real father figures in his life save for Merlin.
Merlin-Arthur: Merlin views Arthur sort of as an adopted son, without using so many words, feeling both kindred and protective, but also estranged. He loves Arthur, but is also a being different in nature from Arthur. Arthur has a deep love and respect for Merlin, but again wouldn't necessarily articulate it as parental.
Merlin-Mordred: Merlin is basically a wise Grandfather, or really cool uncle to Mordred. Teaching him how to control the magic inherent in his blood, his fey wildness, and to harness that power in productive, healthy, positive ways. He foresees little, these days, but for this boy he knows greatness awaits.
Lancelot-Galahad: their relationship is healthy, and even if he's not very big on public displays of affection, Lancelot shows Galahad how much he cares, and how much he loves and supports him. Galahad comes to see how much weight is on his father's shoulders, and realizes (much like Mordred with Arthur), that Lancelot is just trying to make the best of what he's been given, with the whole raised-by-merfolk-and-water-spirits thing.
Tristan-Gawain: best friends, brothers in arms, the Pippin and Merry of the bunch. Would die for each other.
Tristan-Arthur: Tristan brings a great deal of levity to Arthur's serious life, and is the one that introduced him to Guinevere. Tristan is loyal to Arthur, far more than it may appear on first glance, but Arthur feels the same way. Old friends.
Gawain-Arthur: Sharing an upbringing in a more magical way, Gawain and Arthur have a sort of almost sibling energy, but the kind that's mellow and respectful more than volatile. They are happy to just be in a room together, finding solace in the quiet of the woods or by a fire.
Tristan-Guinevere: prankster siblings (but not related). They love to go on adventures together, much to the amusement (and strife) of their respective spouses. There's also a loving warmth to them, a closeness and understanding that's refreshing some days.
Gawain-Lancelot: again, magical upbringing unites them in a weird way, but also a passion for combat arts. Lancelot likes to craft weaponry, and Gawain is happy to help him design and practice with them. They also (secretly) share a love for romantic poetry.
Merlin-Guinevere: some rumours claim that Merlin himself gifted Guinevere with her keen sense of aim, and bows fletched with peacock feathers that will never miss their targets. Whether or not that's true, the two have a deep, loving bond. Guin frequently seeks his advice, and is a fair hand at some minor magical tricks, and he sees a rebellious daughter-figure in her. He sees her wit and intelligence, and applauds her and the boys' attempts at mingling needle arts and magical energy.
Lancelot-Excalibur: weird half-sibling energy.

Writers’ Month 2020 masterpost
1. “tattoo artist/florist AU”: On Arda Street, chapter 1: The Tattoo Artist and the Florist. Bard/Thranduil plus Sigrid, Bain, Tilda and Legolas. There’s a tattoo studio, and a florist’s shop, one on one side of the street and the other a few doors down on the other side, and the curious thing is that the tattoo artist has no tattoos at all - or at least, no visible ones - and the florist has more than a casual observer would be able to count at a glance.
2. “quarantine”: Quarantine with Hal and Jack, chapter 1. Hal Peacock/Jack Outlaw | Jack McQueen, plus Natalie Peacock (OCs from my forever-unfinished novel Two of a Kind). Jack is not coping as well with the covid-19 lockdown as Hal had thought he might. Luckily, Hal has an idea for something to take his mind off it. (not that, get your mind out of the gutter :D )
3. “magic”: Something Magical. Bard/Thranduil. Thranduil thinks about magic, and glamour, and illusion, and wonders if now he is under a different kind of enchantment.
4. “long distance relationship”: So Much To Say. Bard/Thranduil. Bard did not quite manage to tell Thranduil exactly how he felt before the Elves left Dale to return home.
5. “soulmates”: Who Else?. Elladan/Elrohir. The twins are not looking forward to the day of their majority, when they will find out how long they have until they each meet their respective soulmates. However, it appears the Valar already have something in mind for them.
6. “ocean”: Anchor Me To My Promises. Legolas/Imrahil. Legolas stands at the top of the tallest tower of Dol Amroth and looks out over the Sea to the West; sometimes the Sea-longing is almost more than he can bear, but Imrahil is there to ease it and to anchor him to Middle-Earth, for now at least.
7. “hurt/comfort”: All The Time That There Is. Melkor/Mairon. After the Ring is destroyed, Sauron falls.
8. “eight”: Not Right At All. Pippin. It isn’t right, Pippin thinks incoherently as they stumble away from the gates of Moria, blinking in the daylight, blinking back tears. It isn’t right, they were the Nine Walkers, and now Gandalf is gone and there are only eight of them.
9. “illness”: Susceptible. Elladan, Elrohir, Aragorn, Legolas, Elrond, Erestor. The twins and Estel have caught something distinctly resembling the flu while out hunting Orc with the Dúnedain. Elladan is not happy about it, Elrohir is asleep, Elrond is trying to care for them, Legolas is worried about Estel - and Erestor takes charge.
10. “bunnies”: An Alliance With The Land. Tilda, Tauriel.  On their way to the Woodland Realm to visit the Elvenking, Tilda decides she doesn't want to eat rabbits any more, and Tauriel tells her about the Elves' alliance with the forest.
11. “light”: The Light In The Bottle. Sam, Galadriel, Celeborn. At Aragorn and Arwen's wedding, Sam scrunches up his courage to thank Galadriel for the Light of Eärendil which saved Frodo's life (and, he might reluctantly admit, his own).
12. “meet-cute”: A Man Of Splendour. Legolas/Imrahil, Gimli. Gimli likes to tease Legolas about how starry-eyed he got when they first met Prince Imrahil of Dol Amroth. Legolas likes to deny everything, but he knows Gimli is right.
13. “music”: Quarantine with Hal and Jack, chapter 2. Hal Peacock/Jack McQueen | Jack Outlaw. Hal’s and Jack’s bands do a livestream gig...with a surprise at the end for the fans.
14. “metamorphosis”: How To Build A Boy. Hal Peacock/Jack McQueen | Jack Outlaw. Hal thinks about how much Jack has changed over the long years he's known him. Which is...a Lot.
15. “coffee-shop AU”: On Arda Street, chapter 2: The Last Homely Coffee House. Elrond, Celebrían and the kids, half of the population of Imladris, Thorin's Company, various hobbits and a few refugees from the Silmarillion. A little further down the street from the tattoo studio and the florist’s shop is a coffee house. The sign over the door says ‘The Last Homely Coffee House’ and everyone is welcome.
16. “history”: Tales of Glory. Pippin, Merry, Éowyn, Legolas, Glorfindel. At Aragorn and Arwen's wedding, Legolas introduces Éowyn, Merry and Pippin to Glorfindel, who is very keen to thank Merry and Éowyn for proving him right.
17. “cooking”: Birthday Cake. Hal Peacock/Jack McQueen | Jack Outlaw, Natalie Peacock. Natalie wants to bake her dad a birthday cake. Jack, slightly bewildered by the whole concept, helps out.
18. “myths”: Stories of the Past. Frodo. Frodo thinks about stories a lot, in the months after his return to Bag End.
19. “deaging”: A Little Less Than Safe. Bard/Thranduil, Sigrid, Tilda, Sauron. Thranduil takes Bard, Sigrid and Tilda for a picnic in the forest. The sorcerer of Dol Guldur sees an opportunity to have a little fun and teach the Elvenking a lesson.
20. “loss”: To Those We Have Lost. Legolas/Imrahil, Bard/Thranduil (past). After Imrahil's funeral, Legolas arrives back in Ithilien to find that he has a visitor, the one person in all of Middle-Earth who knows exactly what he is feeling: his father.
21. “family”: Room For One More. Legolas, Tilda, background Bard/Thranduil. Legolas finds himself travelling near Dale, ten years or so after the Battle of the Five Armies, and decides to see for himself how the city has changed since he was last there, which brings him news and a gift that he had not expected.
22. “pet store AU”: On Arda Street chapter 3: The Animal Café. Beorn, Sigrid, Tilda, Legolas, Théoden, Théodred, Éowyn, Éomer, Elladan, Elrohir, Arwen, Aragorn. One of the other shops on the street isn’t a shop at all; it’s an animal café and sanctuary for all sorts of animals.
23. “poison”: Complicated. Tilda, Tauriel, Sigrid, Bard/Thranduil. Tilda wants to know why the Elvenking was mean to Tauriel, when her Da seems to think he's nice, and Tauriel tries to explain.
24. “true love’s kiss”: True Love’s Kiss. Hal Peacock/Jack McQueen | Jack Outlaw, Natalie Peacock. Natalie is trying to explain Sleeping Beauty to Jack. Jack doesn't get it, and Hal steps in to try and help (and possibly demonstrate).
25. “drop”: Nobody Tosses A Dwarf. Legolas, Gimli. While exploring the Glittering Caves, Legolas and Gimli come across a place where the path has fallen away. Legolas can make the jump, but Gimli...can't quite.
26. “summer vacation”: Reunions. Legolas/Imrahil, Bard/Thranduil (past). In the fifth summer of Legolas' new colony in Ithilien, his father comes to visit him, and they talk about some of the things they now have in common.
27. “dream”: A Dream In The Green. Gawain (Cursed 2020). Tortured, gravely injured, barely alive, Gawain dreams. And the earth takes him back to herself, to heal.
28. “fantasy”: You Know There’s Another Three Movies, Right? Hal Peacock/Jack McQueen | Jack Outlaw. Hal and Jack watch the Lord of the Rings movies. Jack actually enjoys them, which is rather more than Hal had expected.
29. “high school AU”: On Arda Street, chapter 4: The Kids Are All Right. Legolas, Sigrid, Bain, Tilda, Bard/Thranduil. The children of the tattoo artist and the florist think it’s high time their dads admitted they like each other. Little do they know, their dads are some way ahead of them.
30. “joy”: Empty-Handed. Bard/Thranduil, Thranduil’s Wife (Auriel), Bard’s Wife (Maudie), Legolas, Sigrid, Tilda. Thranduil almost does not sail West at all, certain that Valinor will hold nothing for him, and when he does get there he begins to lose his already tenuous grip on life. But his wife and his son have a plan to restore his happiness to him.
31. “there was only one bed!”: The Fellowship Reunited. The Fellowship and friends. Everyone is very, very tired after the end of the War of the Ring, and when the Fellowship visit Frodo during his recovery, nobody can quite stay awake. Unfortunately there is only one bed...zzzzzz...

The fitting climax of Harry Styles’ album-launch bash on Friday night: the moment Stevie Nicks came out to join him for a surprise duet on “Landslide.” “For me, it wouldn’t be an album release without this young lady,” he told a rapt L.A. Forum crowd who’d already heard him debut the fantastic new Fine Line in its entirety. “I have a feeling you’re going to enjoy this as much as me. Please welcome to the stage, Stevie Nicks.” Never one to make a shy entrance, the Gold Dust Woman sashayed regally to the microphone on bootheels half Harry’s heigh, while he raved, “I know—cool, isn’t it?” Their duet was enough to bring down anybody’s mountains, as they held hands and slow-danced. He gazed deep into her eyes to sing the key line, “Can the child in my heart rise above?” The sold-out arena crowd of 18,000 swooned as these two hit their hair-raising harmonies on the final “snoooooow covered hills.”
Harry and Stevie have a long, touching history as everybody’s favorite rock-star friendship. One of the key moments that anointed him as a solo star after the end of One Direction was his 2017 show at Stevie’s old stomping grounds, L.A.’s famous Troubadour, where she joined him to sing “Landslide,’ “The Chain” and “Leather and Lace.” They did “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” last spring when he inducted her into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, with the iconic image of Harry dropping to his knees onstage to hand her the trophy. She called him her “love child” in Rolling Stone. (Mick Fleetwood was in the house tonight, so it was a family affair.) She dedicated “Landslide” to him at London’s Wembley Stadium with Fleetwood Mac in June, fondly calling him “my little muse.” But this duet felt special, celebrating their mutual admiration as well as his new Fine Line: the queen welcoming this prince into the pantheon.
Harry’s show was a triumph all the way through, as he leveled a rapturously screamadelic crowd in arena-slaying glam-rock monster mode. Honestly, Having Sex wiped the floor with Feeling Sad, and it wasn’t even close. “Fine Line Live: One Night Only” was a stand-alone gig, four months before he begins his 2020 world tour. He made the night more than a showcase for the new songs; he made it a celebration of this communal pop tribe he has somehow gathered over the years, reveling in his role as a madman master of benevolent mischief. He peacocked in his finery from the album cover, in a salmon-pink shirt, a pearl necklace and high-waisted white sailor pants. Fans had been camping out all week in the Forum’s parking lot, and nobody showed up in a mood to get mellow. To the surprise of absolutely not one single person, the entire audience sang virtually every line of songs that none of them had heard 24 hours earlier. “I’m baaaack,” Harry announced. “I have more than ten songs now.”
He kicked off with “Golden,” playing guitar hero over the surging Seventies-style Malibu harmonies. (His entrance theme was a spoken-word soundbite from the writer Charlies Bukowski: “To do a dangerous thing with style is what I call art.”) For the first hour, he did all the new tunes, without a dud in the bunch: “Sunflower, Vol. 6,” which seemed like the closest thing to a weak link, turns out to be a gas live. In typical hyperactive starman mode, he twirled, waved, blew kisses, soared in the impossible vocal acrobatics of “Falling.” He seemed amused to note which moments got the biggest responses, especially after “To Be So Lonely,” with its hook, “I’m just an arrogant son of a bitch who can’t admit when he’s sorry.” “I have one question,” he said. “For what reason when I call myself an ‘arrogant son of a bitch,’ is that when you sing the loudest? Did you just decide to sing that one line with your whole chest?”
A surprise highlight came when he did the theatrical Pippin-smitten “Treat People With Kindness,” bringing out the pop duo Lucius to sing the chorus. The floor became a dance-off—in one corner, dozens of girls put all their bags and backpacks in one giant pile, so nobody had to worry where their stuff was, and then danced around the pile in a circle that was really moving to behold, an example of how a Harry Styles concert creates crucial moments of utopian unity and shared euphoria. At one point, he told the audience, “There’s nothing that makes me more hopeful than standing in front of you. Thank you for that. You absolutely changed my life.”
His ace band brought Fine Line’s wide range of emotions to life. “Canyon Moon” accelerated into a buckskin-fringe hippie hoedown that Crosby, Stills and Nash would have shaved their sideburns for. “Cherry” might be the album’s darkest and rawest moment, with its stark confession of jealousy. (“I confess I can tell that you are at your best / I’m selfish so I’m hating it” is really going all the way down.) But it’s also the prettiest, and tonight “Cherry” became a country-rock ballad with Sarah Jones’ drumrolls and plaintive pedal-steel flourishes from guitar wizard Mitch Rowland, who Harry playfully introduced at rehearsals as “Mr. Mysterious!” “Fine Line” ended on a grand note—the six-minute ballad has the introspective vibe of the final scene of Fleabag, as Phoebe Waller-Bridge takes that long slow lonesome walk home.
The night ended with a five-song victory lap, kicking off with “Sign of the Times,” the glam love-and-death piano ballad that began his solo career with a bang, and ending with the cataclysmic rocker “Kiwi,” which got a metallic new Iron Maiden-style intro. He did his slow dance with Stevie Nicks—finally, the rock & roll queen meets a real king who can handle. He busted out another surprise tribute to one of his classic-rock idols: Sir Paul McCartney. For some reason, “Wonderful Christmastime” sounds positively brilliant as a Harry song; a storm of tinsel confetti snow fell on the audience during what felt like several hundred repetitions of that “siiiim-ply haaaaa-ving” chant.
As he declared at the end, “The album is yours. I am yours. I couldn’t ask for a more incredible group of people to play my music for.” (The exit music: Van Morrison’s “Madame George.”) But there was an extra emotional edge to his version of One Direction’s 2011 debut hit, “What Makes You Beautiful,” revamped into a Stones-style rock groove. Harry’s now got more great songs than he can fit into a solo show. He doesn’t need any padding, any songs he doesn’t passionately want to sing. But it means something to him now to revisit “What Makes You Beautiful,” the hit that started him down the ten-year road to the glories of Fine Line.
As he told me this summer, it’s a toast to the shared history between him and his audience. As he told me this summer, “One of my favorite parts of the show always is playing ‘What Makes You Beautiful.’ Always. It’s not like, ‘I’m not playing *those* songs any more, because this is *me* now.’ I’m saying, ‘No, it’s *all* me.’ If there was any song where I should be saying, ‘I don’t know if I can fucking play that one again,’ that would be the one. So it means so much for me to do it and have us all sing it together. It gets more and more meaningful.” Like the rest of the show, this version of “What Makes You Beautiful” was a celebration of the unique bond between this performer and this audience—and a tribute to how far both have evolved over ten weird years.

Jon’s Friends in the Night’s Watch
Jon makes a number of friends among his fellow recruits in the Night’s Watch.  Some of their names are clever references to characters in other alchemy stories.
Tumblr media
Let’s start with Samwell Tarly.  I’m sure it’s been pointed out many times how Samwell is a play on Samwise from Lord of the Rings.  As I’ve written before,  the name Samwise is a marker for Sam being “mind” to Frodo’s “heart”: Sam is Frodo’s alchemical partner, and they eventually former a rebis figure--a single body with two heads--when Sam carries Frodo up Mount Doom.  Samwell Tarly is also fated to be a mind character, but he is NOT Jon’s partner; he is one of Jon’s many alchemists, nominating Jon in the election to be Lord Commander.
Dolorous Edd is more straightforward.  His full name is Eddison Tollett.  “Eddison” is a namecheck of E. R. Eddison, the author of The Worm Ouroborous, the 1922 novel that initiated alchemical high fantasy.  (GRRM has expressed his admiration for Eddison in the past.)
Then there’s Pyp.  His full name is Pypar, but Pyp is pretty obviously a play on the hobbit Pip in LOTR (also called Pippin, though his full name is Peregrin Took).
Finally, there’s Toad, whose name is actually Todder.  He’s described as having a short, ugly body with an unpleasant voice and pig eyes, so presumably his nickname comes from those characteristics.  But it’s also a way for GRRM to work a toad into his story.
In my post on Maggy the Frog, I talked about the frog/toad being a symbol of the prima materia.  And I cited the example of Neville’s toad in Harry Potter.  Perhaps some people might be interested in the origin of this idea in English alchemical literature.  Here is George Ripley’s Vision, a poem that describes in gruesome detail how the Toad is transformed through death into the universal Medicine, i.e., the Philosopher’s Stone.
When busie at my Book I was upon a certain Night, This Vision here exprest appear’d unto my dimmed sight: A Toad full Ruddy I saw, did drink the juice of Grapes so fast, Till over-charged with the broth, his Bowels all to brast: And after that, from poyson’d Bulk he cast his Venom fell, For Grief and Pain whereof his Members all began to swell; With drops of Poysoned sweat approaching thus his secret Den, His Cave with blasts of fumous Air he all bewhited then: And from the which in space a Golden Humour did ensue, Whose falling drops from high did stain the soyl with ruddy hue. And when his Corps the force of vital breath began to lack, This dying Toad became forthwith like Coal for colour Black: Thus drowned in his proper veins of poysoned flood; For term of Eighty days and Four he rotting stood By Tryal then this Venom to expel I did desire; For which I did commit his Carkass to a gentle Fire: Which done, a Wonder to the sight, but more to be rehearst; The Toad with Colours rare through every side was pierc’d; And White appear’d when all the sundry hews were past: Which after being tincted Ruddy, for evermore did last. Then of the Venom handled thus a Medicine I did make; Which Venom kills, and saveth such as Venom chance to take: Glory be to him the granter of such secret ways, Dominion, and Honour both, with Worship, and with Praise. Amen.*
(I boldfaced the main stages:  Black, peacock’s tail, White, Red)
Ripley (c. 1415-1490), known as the Canon of Ridlington, is also credited as the author of The Compound of Alchymy (1471), which laid out twelve stages in the Great Work.  The manuscript was published in 1591 and is widely considered to have been a source used by Shakespeare.
So you quite reasonably ask--Toad is not a Principle of the Work.  He is not being transformed.  What’s the point of giving him such a significant symbolic name?   I suspect the answer is that GRRM is so committed to working alchemy into his story that he added some alchemical symbolism here and there as incidental flourishes.
You see this also in Harry Potter, by the way, such as the salamander in Chamber of Secrets.
The Salamander is a small, white lizard that lives in fire. It can live up to six hours away from the fire from which it spawned, but it must be fed pepper to keep it alive, and when the fire from which the salamander spawned goes out, the lizard dies as well. The heat of the fire affects the color of the lizard. Salamander blood has healing properties. (Harry Potter Lexicon)
The fire-dwelling salamander is a reference to this image from Atalanta fugiens--the salamander is a common symbol for the Philosopher’s Stone.  But Rowling’s salamanders just add some drama and color; they don’t propel the plot.
Tumblr media
And now back to the real Philosopher’s Stone-to-be in the Night’s Watch, Jon himself.
*For a phrase by phrase analysis of the poem, see the 1678 “Exposition” by Eirenaeus Philalethes, at Adam McLean’s website:  http://www.levity.com/alchemy/rpvision.html

Designer Spotlight: Amanda Berry
#wehave #hasbeen #booksread
(This post, Designer Spotlight: Amanda Berry), was originally written and published by The Loopy Ewe. © TheLoopyEwe, 2021)
Today we have Amanda Berry in our Designer Spotlight. She has some of the cutest designs I’ve seen, and has been featured in books and magazines. Amanda lives in the UK, in a town called Reading in Berkshire, about 40 miles west of London. I know you’ll enjoy learning more about her today! (Note – today’s discount code works in Amanda’s Etsy shop only – see the end!) All pattern links go to Etsy, all yarn links go to The Loopy Ewe.
Loopy: Hi Amanda! Thanks for being in our Spotlight today. How long have you been a knitter and who taught you to knit?
Amanda: Hi Loopy! I started knitting when I was about 6 years old and my Mum taught me the basics.  I also had a book called “A Ladybird Book About Knitting” which was a beginner guide aimed at children.  I remember using that book as I made a few scarves for my teddy bears.  But I didn’t start knitting properly until 20 years later when I was going through a difficult time and my therapist recommended some crafting.  I picked up the needles again and it reignited my passion for all things woolly.
Pippin the Mouse © Amanda Berry (try it in Sandnes Garn Smart)
Loopy: Knitting really is a wonderful way to destress, isn’t it? What is your favorite type of item to knit?
Amanda: I love making toys, I am just a big kid at heart!  I don’t have the patience to make a blanket or anything large scale, and I enjoy the challenge with toys of shaping and bringing the design to life.
Riley the Puppy © Amanda Berry (try it in Cascade 220 Superwash)
Loopy: Your patterns and toys are some of the cutest I have ever seen. (Like that Peacock up there. I definitely need to make myself a Peacock!) What is the most challenging thing that you have knit to date?
Amanda: I recently made an Old English Sheepdog and it was made by knitting loops, and I really dislike knitting loops! I don’t know why, but knitting loops always makes my fingers sore; I was so happy when that dog was finished.
Farmer Drabble and Sheep © Amanda Berry (try it in Sandnes Garn Smart)
Loopy: It’s good to challenge yourself, though, so that sounds like it was a good one. When did you start designing, and what spurred that interest?
Amanda: I started designing in the late 2000’s.  I wanted to knit a toy for a gift but I couldn’t find a pattern I liked, so I designed my own.  I was encouraged to share the pattern and published my first designs in 2010.
Fruits & Vegetables © Amanda Berry (try it in Sandnes Garn Smart)
Loopy: I looked at your patterns and see Fruits and Vegetables as the first design listed. And it’s still as fun as ever! Do you have a favorite pattern that you’ve designed?
Amanda: Griff the Dragon is one of my favourite toys, he’s really cheeky.  I also love making little knits like my Teeny Animals as they are great for using up odds and ends of yarn, and are super quick to knit for impatient people like me!

Loopy: Those teeny tiny creations are adorabley! What is your favorite part of your designing? And your not-so-favorite part?
Amanda: My favourite part is making up the toy seeing it come to life. I prefer to design as I knit so I have the flexibility to change ideas as I knit, so it is great at the end if my ideas actually worked!  The downside of working this way is sometimes the shaping doesn’t work so I have to frog and start again.

Loopy: You must have to take really great notes as you design on the go like that. Do you do this business full-time, or on the side?  And is that hard? Do you have other jobs outside of pattern designing?
Amanda: I am now full-time designing which is fantastic.  When I started designing my knitting was crammed in during the evenings and I was also part-time working and studying for my degree at London College of Fashion.  That was really hard work, so after graduating in 2014 I chose to design full time and it has kept me really busy ever since.
Gerry Giraffe and Ziggy Zebra © Amanda Berry (try it in Cascade 220 Superwash)
Loopy: I figured with the number of patterns you have, you must be doing it full time! Does anyone else in your family knit?
Amanda: It is just me now.  My husband doesn’t knit, but thankfully understands to wait until I reach the end of a row before asking me a question.
Teeny Animal Knits © Amanda Berry (try it in Cascade 220 Superwash)
Loopy: It sounds like he has learned that lesson well! Are there other hobbies that you enjoy?
Amanda: I enjoy walking.  We have some lovely countryside near my home and (especially during these lockdowns) country walks keep me sane. I enjoy being out with nature, even if it is a grey rainy day.  It gives me some headspace which is so important in these Covid days.  I am not an avid reader, but I occasionally enjoy reading PG Wodehouse Jeeves and Wooster books, as they always make me chuckle.
Mr. Snowman © Amanda Berry (try it in Cascade Superwash Sport)
Loopy: Your countryside really is beautiful, rain or shine. What a treat to have such lovely walkways close to your home. What would be your favorite way to spend a day off?
Amanda: I would have breakfast in bed (cooked by someone else please!) – a large cup of coffee and baked beans with fried egg on toast, yum!  Then I would go to London for the day and visit a museum. I especially enjoy going to the British Museum, the V&A and the National Gallery. I would then have some food at the Southbank and browse the vintage book stalls. That would be a great day off.
Olive the Owl © Amanda Berry (try it in Cascade 220 Superwash Aran)
Loopy: Well I did not know there was such a thing as Vintage Book Stalls. I think I would be lost in there all day! Last set of questions: Morning or Night person? Coffee or Tea? English or Continental? Solids or Multicolors?
Tumblr media
Amanda: Morning once I have had my first coffee.  Coffee, never tea (it gives me a headache).  English please, anything vegetarian with an egg is great.  Multi-colours, I am a fan of stripes.
Beeper the Robot © Amanda Berry (try it in Cascade 220 Superwash)
Loopy: Anything else you’d like to add?
Amanda: Thank you so much for taking the time to read my little ramblings.   I hope you are all keeping safe out there, and happy knitting!
