Friday night out with the boyz, Ridley y Bryan. I can say to myself with total assurance that I love them, although I haven’t told them because I’ve never really been one to say ‘I love you’ after a couple days of knowing someone. Maybe I should start.

Wednesday night, after the rat incident, I was set on leaving Maria’s house the following morning and wrote Bryan and Ridley in a frenzy. I awoke to their reply saying, yes, you can stay with us. I was to stay in Bryan’s room, as he was still going to be out of town in his home country of El Salvador. At the last minute, he booked a week-long trip back to Mérida.

Thursday was spent mostly in bed, smoking bowls here and there with Ridley. Friday came and Bryan was to return that evening, I slept in that morning, got a late breakfast and went on a solo date to the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya. From there I met up with Ridley at the mall, he was picking up Chinese take-out and I needed an extra piece of luggage. The two of us shared what felt like equal parts conversing and silence.

Ridley is a 23 year old transmasc sweetie from Guaymas, Sonora, his father es carnicero, he studied animation, graduated in August, and is currently job hunting. Libra sun and moon, Pisces rising, with a very calm and caring disposition. He has a gatito named Carmelo, who used to be a partially outdoor cat till he lost his tail in a mysterious accident last year. They make a good duo and have been keeping eachother company in Bryan’s absence. Ridley made me tortas and hot cakes, I washed the dishes.

Once Bryan arrived and settled in, the three of us went out into the town. Bryan has a way of galavanting through the streets that mesmerizes me, he's charming and easy to follow. We took el camión al centro. Nos fuimos caminando por el barrio, cada sitio mas y mas ocultado, algunos ya estuvieron en mi radar, otros no. Fuimos al Pipiripau, KINO-UADY, Estadio Salvador Alvarado, Salón Gallos, Palacio de la Música, y La Gata Negra. 

Bryan is 22 years old, also studied and graduated with a degree in animation, his personality is, as Ridley described, akin to a highly-sociable dog, he can wolf whistle in true Central American fashion, and he’s added ‘guey’ to his lexicon after 4 years of living in México. He touched every plant, car, fence, building face and lamppost he could get his hands on. We walked by an abandoned bus with it’s rear doors open, Bryan hopped in and I followed, Ridley stayed out on the sidewalk saying he had to piss but I saw the caution they held in their body, I imagine this behavior wouldn’t fly in narco country.

This night was the most liberated I’ve felt on my trip thus far and I’m inspired to take more open hearted action. They mentioned they would be in CDMX in April to see Mitski in concert for the second time and a few days later, a total solar eclipse will be taking place in Mazatlán, where there’s been talk about renting a car to drive to the Pacific coast and bask in nearly 4 minutes of darkness. I’m tempted to extend my trip though I don’t know how feasible that would be. I just can’t shake the feeling that we’ll see each other and soon.

Before we went out that night, I abruptly ditched my mini backpack, full of everything I could possibly need, and carried my phone and wallet instead. It’s as if there was a knowing that we’d be sprinting from one bus stop to the next to catch our ride to the city center. That I needed to pack light to move forward and upward with more ease. I'm kind of basic and super embarrassed to share my super señora music taste but I love every Ángeles Azules song (except 17 años for obvious reasons). I mentioned El Colesterol last time but I love Fito Olivares in general - Juana la Cubana is his other famous one. I love El Pipiripau, La Cumbia Sampuesana, Mil Horas, Tao, Tao (is that cumbia?? idk), Fuego by Kumbia Kings. Also by Kumbia Kings, Na, Na, Na (Dulce Niña) is like top 3 songs of alllll time for me. Oh and Grupo Frontera everything..,.

Tabaco y Ron is also a really good one! Cumbia is so lighthearted and fun - but I like Tabaco y Ron a lot because the subject matter is pretty serious (trafficking, the bad people of the world, and dying), but the message is that this is something you just have to survive/dance through and make the most of. The lines "Quita esa mala cara, compadre // Que te va a matar esa amargura" really gets me out of my head – worry and bitterness really do kill, I think, so it's best to drop it.

Merida is a huge city! Filled with museums, stalls, restaurants and Mayan Markets. We spent our many days here (10 in total), exploring free museums, finding cheap bars and witnessing our first Mexican storm. Mexico’s rainy season starts now, so the afternoons are starting to get wet and humid, ready to be cleared for the evening.

We went on our first tour bus! Which was hot and Courtney tried cactus for the first time in Mexico, it was grilled and thick and not very tasty but she’s glad she tried it. It’s a good vegan option here.

Dotted around the main Plaza are many museums, The Museo of Contemporary Art, The Yucatan Folk Art Museum, Yucatan Gastronomical Museum, Mayan Museum (which we went to but was unfortunately closed), History of Merida Museum.

We were happy to find some great, cheap bars around where we were staying. Dzalbay (jazz bar), La Negrita Cantina, Pipiripau, Istabai, Cantina Balam (most of them selling 80p tequilas and many other drinks).

We also had a couple of a favourite meals yet. 1) Pita - delicious pittas from a Mediterranean restaurant, 2) Gorditas Doña Gorda - a fast food restaurant selling pockets of maiz bread stuffed with meats or beans and cheese etc. We also had our first pizza delivery from Super Pizza (as good as dominos ((with sesame seeds on the crust)) especially on a hangover!).

Another light show was shown on the Cathedral on Friday evenings, showcasing the history of Yucatan. Unfortunately due to Covid, the weekly Saturday Pok a Tok game (the Mayan ball game) was cancelled but there was a live band which we listened to whilst eating our Gorditas.

A highlight for Courtney was the amazing coloured buildings, scattered across the city.

Merida has been fun, after deciding to extend our stay for a week! (The hotel, La Casa Del Quetzal, charged us £10 a night which was a great deal). We used this week to chill, explore a large city but by the end of our stay, we began to get itchy feet to get on the road again - next stop Progreso, a beach town 45 minutes north of Merida, where we will be for a couple of nights.

Brazil: Fire hits annex building of the Natural History Museum of the Federal University of Minas Gerais

Federal Police investigate causes of fire that started early Monday morning (June 15th, 2020)

A fire on Monday (June 15, 2020) hit a building linked to the Museum of Natural History and Botanical Garden of UFMG (Federal University of Minas Gerais), in the eastern region of Belo Horizonte. There were no victims. The causes of the fire are investigated by the Federal Police. The affected building was a technical reserve annex where part of the museum's collection was located, but not on display. The university is still calculating the damage. In all, the museum has more than 265 thousand pieces of archeology, paleontology, historical cartography, popular art, ethnography, botany, geology, zoology, and in library. “It is certainly an area that concerns us a lot. Three rooms were affected, but we will only really have news when the investigation is completed.”, says Mariana Lacerda, director of the Museum of Natural History and Botanical Garden at UFMG.

She states that the building's electrical wiring was redone in 2013. The last inspection of the Fire Department was carried out in October 2018. Lagoa da Pampulha, Parque das Mangabeiras, Parque Municipal e Horto Florestal eram alguns dos favoritos. Recentemente foi a vez de recordar a infância e ressignifica-lá através do olhar e da experiência da Sofia, e do Mateus também, sempre atento com seus olhinhos curiosos. Fomos ao Horto Florestal, hoje chamado de Museu de História Natural e Jardim Botânico da UFMG. Que delicia!!! É um oásis no meio da cidade, cheio de árvores, trilhas, animais diversos, um lago com peixes e tartarugas, várias exposições e experiências sensoriais, além do famoso presépio do Pipiripau, cujas primeiras peças tem mais de 100 anos. Comemos jambo caído do pé, respiramos ar puro, aprendemos sobre o lugar e ainda pude compartilhar com meus filhos várias histórias da minha infância, da infância da Lívia (que também cresceu indo lá). Chuvas vão aliviar a seca, mas consumo de água deve se manter consciente

Apesar de o início da primavera marcar a proximidade com as chuvas no Distrito Federal, a capital ainda passa por um longo período de estiagem, de temperaturas elevadas e de baixa umidade do ar. Além dos efeitos sentidos pelos moradores, é importante lembrar que a falta de chuvas reduz a quantidade de água nos córregos e rios.

Embora os níveis dos lagos Descoberto e Santa Maria estejam acima da média em 2020, a atenção deve se voltar para os sistemas de abastecimento que atendem as regiões de Sobradinho, Planaltina, São Sebastião, Jardim Botânico e Brazlândia. Esses sistemas dependem de captações a fio d’água (sem reservatório de acumulação) e poços tubulares profundos.

As captações de água dessas localidades mais ao Nordeste e ao Leste do DF são conhecidas como “Pequenas Captações” e são mais vulneráveis ao período de estiagem, pois estão localizadas em rios com baixas vazões e, portanto, com reduzida disponibilidade hídrica.

Os pontos de captação Capão da Onça e Barrocão ficam na região de Brazlândia. Contagem, Paranoazinho e Corguinho na região de Sobradinho. Já as captações do Fumal, Mestre D’Armas, Quinze, Brejinho e Pipiripau estão localizadas na região de Planaltina. No caso da cidade de São Sebastião, o abastecimento é realizado principalmente por poços tubulares profundos que também ficam submetidos à baixa disponibilidade hídrica nos períodos de seca.

A Caesb tem atuado para melhorar no abastecimento dos moradores de Planaltina e Sobradinho. Neste mês foram entregues as obras de revitalização do sistema de canais de irrigação Santos Dumont, na região Norte de Planaltina, que utilizam a água do Ribeirão Pipiripau.

As obras realizadas no ramal principal e nos oito canais secundários do Santos Dumont vão contribuir na redução do índice de perdas de água e ampliar a disponibilidade hídrica para os produtores rurais e os moradores das cidades de Planaltina e de Sobradinho. As perdas da água do canal agora passam a integrar o sistema de abastecimento de Planaltina e Sobradinho.

O projeto de revitalização do Canal Santos Dumont vem sendo desenvolvido há mais de cinco anos. A reestruturação dos canais secundários começou em 2019 utilizando cerca de 7.600 metros de tubulações fornecidas pela Caesb. Já nas obras da tubulação no canal principal, que iniciaram em junho de 2020, foram instalados aproximadamente 9.900 metros de tubos com diâmetros entre 800 e 250 mm. Com 18 km de extensão, o canal foi construído em 1984 e começou a ser operado em 1989. Ele corre paralelo à rua principal do núcleo rural e tem oito ramais.

Foi realizado um investimento total de R$ 5 milhões, sendo R$ 3,2 milhões do valor resultante do saldo da Tarifa de Contingência cobrada dos usuários durante a crise hídrica, e mais R$ 1,8 milhão arrecadado pela cobrança do uso dos recursos hídricos, destinado pelo Comitê de Bacia do Paranaíba.

Uso racional da água

Embora este ano tenha apresentado boa precipitação, os moradores não podem descuidar das medidas que evitam o desperdício de água. Confira algumas dicas simples do site da Caesb para contribuir para uma sociedade mais sustentável.

Para se ter ideia, um banho de vinte minutos, por exemplo, desperdiça, em média, 130 litros de água. Mais do que os 110 litros recomendados pela Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU) para uso diário por pessoa para necessidades de consumo e higiene.

Uma torneira aberta continuamente durante três minutos tem um gasto de 18 litros de água. Ao escovar os dentes recomenda-se fechar a torneira e só abrir quando for enxaguar a boca. Na lavagem da louça, a atitude deve ser a mesma. Com a torneira aberta continuamente, o gasto médio é de 240 litros. Abrindo e fechando a torneira, o gasto cai para 70.

Uma torneira mal fechada desperdiça 46 litros por dia. Uma correndo em filete gasta 180 a 750 litros. Já uma aberta normalmente pode gastar até 12,5 mil litros de água por dia. Uma descarga comum gasta de sete a 10 litros de água. É necessário sempre observar se a válvula está regulada, se não há furos nos canos e as torneiras da casa estão bem fechadas.

Ao limpar calçadas, a melhor opção é varrer a sujeira ao invés de utilizar mangueiras, reduzindo assim o uso inadequado de água potável. Outra opção de economia é utilizar a água da lavagem de roupas para fazer esse tipo de limpeza.

Uma medida que pode contribuir para o aspecto ambiental e econômico é a instalação de hidrômetros individualizados. O hidrômetro individual é um grande avanço nas questões condominiais, pois além de reduzir o desperdício de água, faz uma cobrança justa pelo consumo real de cada unidade habitacional.

A medição individualizada incentiva o consumo responsável de água e propicia mais atenção aos aspectos de manutenção das instalações hidráulicas, pois em caso de problemas como vazamentos, há um aumento da conta mensal individual induzindo o morador a tomar providências imediatas.
