Today’s ride made me think of long car rides home down dirt roads. I remember as a child I could curl up in the backseat with my eyes closed and know by ever turn and bend just about when we would get home. Sometimes I would sit up, other times I’d pretend to be asleep but every single time I knew the last sounds of rock crushing underneath our tires as we pulled into our home. These trails run along the Rio Grande in and out of the Cottonwood trees well past Alameda south and well past 528 north. Some are new but most are very familiar. I find myself closing my eyes more and more nowadays and listening to Pipers hooves as he walks through the trees. I know the trails by the bends and curves and I also know that when there is a fork in the trail and a decision needs to be made...Piper will always go left and that’s perfectly fine because whether my eyes are closed or open I’m just along for the ride. Piper and my least favorite places to ride are in tight narrow spaces, deep within the trees, where you can’t see the horizon, rubbed and grazed by branches, we make our way though the passage. However, today I felt it was so important that we go...it’s a knot that needed to be untied and a freedom found once I felt I let it go. Forward...that was what was released, it was a feeling, a word that had a rope tied around it for so long and today I felt it fall away. Bound by fear, bound by doubt, bound by the unknown, bound by small spaces...what is the worst that can happen? A little over a month ago I caught my coat on fire while warming #piper77 bit and my hands by the farriers roaring warm forge. I responded so quickly to the heat but not fast enough to melt the fabric. I was so upset because this isn’t just any coat, it was my Pops coat. A man that I loved dearly and was lucky enough to be loved by him until he was well into his 90’s. @catbyrd15 is the only person I knew that I could hand my coat over and just simply say...can you make it better? She did just that and I love the way she mended my broken heart as well. I especially love the hand dyed doily with a hidden piece of turquoise tucked safely inside. Kintsugi is the Japanese art of fixing broken pottery by mending the pieces back together with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. The cracks are celebrated instead of looking at the pottery as flawed. Thank you again for helping me celebrate what at first broke my heart but now fills it with much happiness. It’s not the same...but so much better and I’m sure my Pop would think this was a pretty sweet gesture.
