tell me everything about duke

well, you already know some of this, but here goes:

in the way I write Duke, she's transfem, which already sets her at odds with her dad. her father hasn't been the same for years- that place he used to work at, watcher world- it changed something in him. Duke can't remember a time her father was ever kind.

but even if there was never a watcher world, Duke doubts that they ever could have got along. Duke has always known that something wasn't quite right with her. "he" is fine, but "son" isn't. not that she would ever voice that.

duke starts high school. becomes friends with someone she can't quite remember the name of- but they were a good friend. her father hated them. Duke thinks that they helped her. helped her feel more right. then they disappeared. and with them, so did Duke's memories.

anyway. Duke's father was not a good man. and Duke knows that. she never came out, probably for the best. she doesn't know what would have happened, but she doesn't have high hopes, considering that this is the man that got mad at her for who she was friends with, who didn't let her be herself.

so as she gets older, she looks in the mirror, and sees him. sees someone who hated her. they share a name, share a face. and Duke worries that they have more in common than she would have thought.

SHE'S THE WARRIOR OF LIGHT ! what does that mean?? i dunno!! but she's so fucking cool and important! i think that Kim Whalen did such an amazing job playing her, specifically in the scene before Take Me Back, and the scene before and until the end of Do You Want to Play. she's just so good at what she does.

WOAHHH uh lemme conjure some up for you... (this will be using my incredibly specific Holloway headcanons, be warned)

they knew each other in highschool. everyone knew Becky, of course. with the amount of pep she had, she was just about the face of the school. they had an odd friendship. Becky was popular, cheerleader, got good grades, etc, etc. Holloway was not. queer neurodivergent kids have a difficult time in school, and she wasn't much different. they got good enough grades in every class that mattered, but then... disappeared, after high school. forgotten.

Becky got the short of the stick, with that. because she couldn't ever quite forget her. when you know someone as well as she knew Holloway, that can't just be erased, just... buried. she's hurting, missing someone she can't hold onto the memories of. she starts dating Tom. then Stanley. then a diner called Miss Retros shows up. and Becky begins to feel like a piece isn't missing.

after making the deal, Holloway started to see things. visions before they happened, Bliklotep has a fondness for violence, after all. and they hate her. so why not torment her with the knowledge of what Becky went through?

Miss Retros is an escape for them both. it lets Becky get away from Stanley when she's not working, and it lets Holloway pretend that everything is fine. it's good enough.

becky shows up at the diner one night, covered in blood, terrified. and holloway can put the pieces together pretty easily. and then they go from there.
