Pitch Week
It was an educational moment to pitch to a panel of lecturer's our adaptation idea...
These are the slides I worked on:
Text for slides:
Themes, storytelling considerations, tone, and style. Themes that we have added through characterisation and story development.
The stylistic approach reflects Felix’s mindset and the setting’s discomfort by being partially disaturated. This takes inspiration from A Special Day and Operation Hyacinth that use themes of surveillance, lack of privacy, and discomfort to motivate their stylistic choices. These themes are present in our film as we have embedded them into the screenplay through the characters. These characters are constantly hiding or running away with authority preventing them from achieving their goals. This takes inspiration from Ashes and Diamonds’ portrayal of trauma and guilt the protagonist faces due to authority to motivate the development of the narrative. The stylistic approach to the film’s present day setting will implement techniques to create an unpleasant environment. The narrative encourages this as both Felix and Berkeley are searching for a utopia, a queer utopia. In turn, by presenting an unpleasant environment the characters live in the film encourages to imagine the opposite, to find the place that these characters are looking for. This approach to the environment takes inspiration from Akira Kurosawa’s Drunken Angel and Ana Lily Amirpour’s A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night.
Film References:
A Single Man (Tom Ford, 2009)
A Special Day (Ettore Scola, 1977)
Hiroshima, Mon Amour (Alain Resnais, 1959)
Ashes and Diamonds (Andrzej Wajda, 1958)
Drunken Angel (Akira Kurosawa, 1948)
Touch of Evil (Orson Welles, 1958)
Operation Hyacinth (Piotr Domalewski, 2021)
Text for slide Silhouette/ Shadow Flashbacks
This will provide a greater visual difference from the present scenes to the flashback sequences that use colour and silhouettes to provide a more subjective perspective. This is due to a silhouettes ability to eliminate unnecessary distractions and focus the audience’s attention on events and details most important to the protagonist.
In Muriel, Alain Resnais uses objects to transition between past and present. Sherlock has imaginative transitions.
After the pitch, Menna and I had a conversation about our short story, and she kindly offered to help us. Afterwards I sent her an email with an outline me and Ethan wrote.

Film after film: Hiacynt (Operation "Hyacinth," dir. Piotr Domalewski, 2021)
My beef with Polish films that tackle LGBTQ+ stories is that they mostly deal with the trauma of the past and/or the present in ways that are predictably mundane. This film has a lot of it too, and it's not a bad thing. There's just no heart that beats under the layer of an interesting yet emotionally detached storyline, with one great lead role (Zietek) and not much more.
