One of my studies on Pokemon Evolution involved Pinkan Island, a remote place with a unique environment, and a specific plant that many of the native pokemon feast on. While all pokemon appear to be similar to native Kantonian pokemon, they all had one unique feature...they were pink!
Tumblr media
I was among the team of researchers who studied this strange phenomenon. Our most telling test was that we gave one of our partner pokemon the same diet that the island pokemon had been eating, to see whether the berries would have a similar effect. But our pokemon never turned pink! And upon further inspection, pokemon who hatched natively were already pink, without having fed on the berries!
It’s believed that long ago, whenever these pokemon began to inhabit this island and were unable to migrate elsewhere, they adapted by gradually developing a pink hue. For bug-type and bird-type pokemon, this would lend them camouflage to blend in in the trees. We’re still trying to determine what the trait would have on other types of pokemon.
Unfortunately, Pinkan Island is not open outsiders, as there have been many poaching cases in the past. Not to mention, many of the pokemon are highly hostile, because of poaching and bad experiences with humans. I nearly got a poison sting trying to capture this picture!
Tumblr media
But it was my research here that led me to theorize on how pokemon have changed over time. I would love to go back one day and research further!

Pink Raichu can only be found on the mysterious Pinkan Island.  They are also known as Cupid Raichu due to their ability to detect romantic emotions!  Their cheek pouches are sensitive to the electrical currents of the heart and brain, and they can actually 'tell' when someone is experiencing romantic feelings.  When they sense these feelings, pink Raichu release short bursts of electricity in the shape of hearts!  This ability makes pink Raichu very popular partner Pokemon for those seeking love!  What better way to know whether your crush feels the same way about you than to have a Pokemon that can actually tell you?
Pink Raichu was part of my first Pink Pokemon collection!  It has already been adopted, but look out for a another collection with new designs soon!  She is made of soft minky with a machine embroidered face, thread sculpted toes, and a poseable wired tail.  She is approximately 13.5" tall to the top of the ear.  Pattern by @teacupliondesigns.

A recent commission of rhydon: "The variant itself would be native to the Orange islands specifically Pinkan island, this island them Pokémon eat a type of berry that makes them pink and I figured this could be translated to regional forms. This variant would be a pink fairy type with a happy deposition and a theming around island Gigantism as a small island would have less competition. Physical changes could be a rounder body and a soft horn. The variant would retain the ground type."
I love how this turned out!
I gave it some clefable wings, but originally I was also going to give it clefable's black horn tips as well. Also I just noticed that I turned rhydon's ears into horns, which is a weird thing to do when changing it to a fairy type.

Lembra?

Orange League, Episode 8 - The Island of Pink Pokemon
Unaware that Togepi learned Metronome in the recent Official Team Rocket incident, Misty and Tracey express concern that they're leveling up but aren't learning any Moves. Misty previous tried to teach Headbutt to Togepi, but Togepi just couldn't grasp Misty's pantomimed explanation.
Sad thing is, Headbutt is a TM move that Togepi can learn. But the Headbutt TM isn't available in Kanto. Limited availability of Gen II tools and mechanics is the price Misty pays for acquiring an Early-Access Pokemon.
Anyways, the group gets pulled into a whirlpool and Plot Mermaids deliver them safely to Pinkan Island, not to be confused with last episode's Ponkan/Sunburst Island. This is the pink ponkan, home to pinkan berries that dye Pokemon pink when eaten.
Reskin berries are a neat idea for a Pokemon customization mechanic, but ultimately there's little to do here but go, "Huh, that's neat." So the episode waffles to fill time. Jessie fantasizes about opening a pink amusement park. Ash gets chased around by a pink Rhyhorn. They call Oak to talk about how cool pink Pokemon are. Etc.
The A-plot revolves around needing to keep people from coming to this island so they don't poach the Pokemon here. But it's not super clear how catching these pink Pokemon is substantively different from catching Pokemon anywhere else - Especially since the pink pigmentation is caused by a berry and explicitly wears off if the berry isn't eaten regularly.
"Poaching" Pokemon is kind of a weird concept, but at least the last time it was brought up, it was in a nature preserve adjacent to the Safari Zone. Here, Oak's just like, "Oh yeah, we can't let people poach these rare pink Pokemon, who actually aren't rare or special in any way, they just ate the special pink berry."
Uh. Okay? Why not? Why is it okay to catch a Nidoking somewhere else, but we need to fight Team Rocket to stop them from capturing a temporarily pink Nidoking they legitimately defeated in battle the proper Pokemon Trainer way? This is a weird episode.
