Finally, I finish it after working for so long (*꒦ິ꒳꒦ີ). I think I might be crazy to do something like this, but honestly I'm so forgetful that I want to keep things on track and sometimes curiosity gets a hold on me (｡>﹏<). And so, here is the "Tags Page" that is slightly different from the desktop version (which is much more simple, but since there is tumblr limitation, just go there for more complete links).

Since Chinese fandom culture is different from Western fandoms, I tried to compile the tags, sorted them out and found the equivalences. It's far from perfect, but if you're interested you can take a look below the cut. Basically, it's just a compilation of tags and keywords from PingXie fandom (and maybe you will find them in other fandoms too). At any rate, I hope it can be helpful (˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶)

The tickle at the back of his throat starts halfway through his flight from Osaka Itami.

patterns: I assumed I wouldn’t use character names in the first sentences, but I do! I’m going to try it with just pronouns, to see what that’s like. All the usual MFA stuff has infected me, clearly: show don’t tell, start in medias res/already in the action, etc. Two of the sentences are in a construction I’ve been consciously trying to leave behind: “When [something happens], [something else happens].” In general they all seem disappointingly bog-standard first sentences to bog-standard short stories and I am personally resolving to take more risks and be weirder and less American Academic Realism. Because why be so ordinary?

Small-Med Ships Exchange Signups Open

It’s time for the Daomu Biji Small-Med Ships Exchange, a fic, art and vid exchange for DMBJ ships where more than 3% of English-language authors have posted fics on AO3.

In this exchange, participants will be anonymously matched to create gifts for one another during a six week creating period.

This exchange is open to all the DMBJ canons - if it’s DMBJ, then it’s eligible! It will take place on AO3, so you need an AO3 account to participate – if you don’t have one, you can request an invitation code here. Guidelines

1. Your creation must focus on your recipient’s requested ship (or one of their requested ships, if they have nominated multiple ones). While unrequested background ships are fine (unless listed as a Do Not Want), the focused ship must only be one of the requested ones. 2. You will be expected to create a gift matching your recipient’s request. Filling any specifying prompts is not obligatory, but try to create something you honestly think your recipient will enjoy! 3. You must not include anything that your recipient has listed as a DNW (Do Not Want). This goes for treats as well. 4. The minimum requirements for the gifts are 300 words for fic, one sketch on unlined paper for art (traditional or digital; no manips), or 30 seconds for a vid. 5. After the matching is done, all the requests will be made visible to everyone to allow for treating! There are no minimum requirements for treats (but remember to mind your recipient’s do not wants!). You can also create manips and fanvids for treats. 6. This is an anonymous exchange: refrain from discussing your assignment in public. After the works are revealed, there’ll be one week anon period when the creators remain anonymous before the creator reveals. 7. If at any point you need to drop out, just click on the “default” button on your AO3 assignment page; we’ll find a pinch hitter to create a gift for your recipient instead. If you need an extension to finish your gift, contact the mods before the deadline. 8. After the reveals, comment on your gift. 9. Most importantly: be excellent to each other!

Sign-ups will take place here on AO3, ending on May 4th. There, you can fill out details about your request and offer. You can edit your sign-up at any time until the sign-ups close on May 4th.

Fandom - you have to choose at least one. If you’re willing to receive a gift in any canon era, you can just click “Any”!

Genre - you have to choose at least three tags.

Ratings - you have to choose at least one. This will help your gifter know what you like and are comfortable with when they're coming up with ideas to fill your prompts.

Warnings - you have to choose at least one. This does not mean that you WILL receive a gift with warnings, it just lets your gifter know if you are comfortable receiving a gift with warnings or not.

Optional Details - here’s where you can go into more detail about your perfect exchange gift!You can include:

General Likes: your gifter may, but doesn’t have to, include them. This isn’t a place for detailed prompts, just general themes you enjoy, like getting together or established relationship.

Please note that fics featuring QPRs, ace, and/or aro characters are absolutely valid things to request in a ship exchange.

DNW (Do Not Wants): things that your creator must not include - squicks, triggers, characters or things that you simply don’t like. Please list if you have any audio or visual triggers (such as flashing lights). This could be in your DNW or could be separate. Please also list song/music DNWs (e.g.   "please no lyrics that use the n-word" or "please no lyrics in [specific language]"  or “please no [specific genre/s of music”).

Prompts/specific ideas: if you have any prompts, you can also put them here! You can be as general or as detailed as you’d like, but remember that while your creator will try to make the best gift for you, filling a specific prompt is not obligatory. You can include a crossover prompt (with other DMBJ verse or other canons), but make sure it’s not the only prompt you have.

For vid prompts, please list things like genres/styles of music you like (or like in vids), vibes/tone/theme you’d like to see (e.g. “angsty amnesiac Xioage”, “Fuba crack”, etc.), and things like that. Please try to avoid giving one or two specific songs for a specific character/ship.

If you chose novels as one of your fandoms, you can use this field to list the ones you’re familiar with, such as ‘Books 1-4′ , ‘main series only′, ‘main series + specific extras’, etc.

The requests will be made publicly visible after matching is done, so that others will be able to create treats (additional gifts) based on them!

Genre - you have to choose at least three.

Ratings - you have to choose at least one. This will help matching what people are comfortable creating with what people are comfortable receiving.Warnings - you have to choose at least one. This does not mean that you have to create a gift with warnings, it's just for helping to match what people are comfortable writing with what people are comfortable receiving.

Optional Details - in this field, you can tell us more about the kind of works you like to create, for example if you really prefer established relationship, feel best with certain kinds of AUs, or like writing darkfic. We’ll take it into account when matching! By the same token, if there’s something you really don’t want to write, let us know here as well.

If you chose novels as one of your fandoms, you can use this field to list the ones you’re familiar with, such as ‘Books 1-4′ , ‘main series only′, ‘main series + specific extras’, etc.

In the optional details of your offer, you can also name people you don’t want to be matched to, for example your regular beta, and we will do our best to avoid matching you!

Your Assignment

You will be matched to create a gift for someone who requested at least one of the fandoms that you offer, with as many similar genres/likes as possible. This exchange will be hand-matched, after using AO3’s matching algorithm to first generate the potential matches.

If you have any issues when you receive your assignment (you have a question about it or think there’s an issue with it), contact the mods as soon as possible. Do not contact your recipient on your own.

You will have to create a gift for your recipient, fulfilling the minimum requirements of fandom, genre, and ship, and avoiding any stated “do not wants”. Filling exact prompts is optional, but try to create something matching your recipient’s likes that they will enjoy!

You will have to post your gift to the exchange AO3 collection before the due date (June 25th), using the “gift this work to” option to give it to your recipient. Your work will remain in the collection only visible to you and the mods until the reveals happen. Remember to tag your work appropriately or use the “chose not to warn” warning.

Treating

Treats are additional gifts for the participants! To allow for treating, the requests will be made visible when matching is done. You can create treats at any time until the creator reveals! There are no minimum requirements for treats, and manips are also allowed in addition to fic, art, and vids. As with assignments, you have to respect the recipient’s Do Not Wants, and while the optional details are optional, try to create something fitting the listed likes. One treat can only be gifted to one person.

Pinch Hits

In case someone needs to drop out, we will look for a pinch hitter to complete their assignment. Pinch hits will be posted to this tumblr and the DMBJ Yu Cun Discord.

If you think you can finish your assignment, but you need a few days more, you can always ask for an extension! 

Multi-Chapter Fics

If you are writing a multi-chapter fic for the exchange and don’t want to drop the entire fic at once, these are the posting guidelines for it:

Multi-chapter fics that are assignment fills must be fully written and at least the first chapter posted by the assignment deadline, ready for the fic reveals on July 2nd.

From July 2nd, at least one chapter is to be posted daily.

All chapters of the fic must be posted by the time of author reveals and end of treating on July 9th (If the fic is more than 7 chapters long, then this will mean that multiple chapters will need to be posted on some days).

Multi-chapter fics that are treats can begin to be posted at any time, but must also be fully posted by July 9th.

3 Ships You Like: my brain could go in 10 different directions here in addition to the most obvious course, but most recently, hmmm - Ye Liuxi/Chang Dong (West out of Yumen) they were awfully cute together. I'd rewatch if the Youtube version wasn't such a mess. And still somehow surprisingly to me, pingxie- every time a post pops up it reminds me that oh yeah I do really feel them. And recently, fanghua (really!) after reading a fic that tossed me unceremoniously over the line. I'm not done making noise about that either.

First Ship Ever: I guess the first one I was really conscious of (and read fic for) was Mulder/Scully. damn that feels like an aeon ago, another life

Last Song You Heard: Kendall Tavern/Dancing in Allihies by Jenna Moynihan (it's a tune technically but I think that counts). as someone who plays a lot of music (instruments) I tend to listen to things I play or want to play, which means I'm usually listening to some odd shit.

Favourite Childhood Book: it's difficult to remember I blew through so many, although a lot were my mother's books and not necessarily for kids ..maybe Island of the Blue Dolphins? I cannot remember whether it was assigned to us in school or if I read it on my own, or both. Probably both!

Currently Reading: rereading クスノキの番人 by Higashino Keigo, so I can absorb more vocabulary than I did the first time around. Last time I was in Japan I didn't have a list of books to find and was aimlessly looking around- this one was on display and just sounded interesting so I grabbed one. It was cute, just slightly supernatural and sentimental - wouldn't be surprised if it gets animated or made into a short tv series. That and at the same time also 二百二十日 by Natsume Soseki because I love being at least mildly confused and challenged at all times.

Currently watching: Rewatching MLC just for the feels and also trying to figure out how to watch Ying Yang Master without having to give Netflix my cc number. Also would like to know where people are accessing the unofficial copies of Spirealm since the recent barrage of gifsets of a frighteningly young-looking Huang Junjie suggests it's around somewhere - anyone know?

Currently consuming: blueberries and just a little cabot plain greek yogurt - expensive but so good. I figure if food is gonna cost over $10 every time then I'd might as well eat something healthy that i'll want every day.

Currently craving: at the moment I'd love these clouds to clear up. It's Saturday in late February and the sun would be nice on my day off. Would love to go on a hike to look for oyster mushrooms though I never have good luck finding those. Update: went for a short jog and it felt like I woke up with someone else's legs today, in a bad way. I want the energy I had on Monday. Probably the fault of the junk I ate yesterday - trying broccoli and brown rice tonight, will try again tomorrow and see if it helps (usually does).

The nights drag themselves on, each sunrise a longer wait despite the shortening nights.

The first and most obvious pattern is that I'm bad at taking just the first sentence XD In my mind they feel like a single unit, and it felt wrong to leave them out. Also, for anyone actually looking at the links you'll also notice that numbers 2 and 4 aren't the first lines of the story-- they are the first lines I wrote for those fics, but because I was writing with other people these are my first lines. Despite the amount of co-writers number 6 is the first line of the story, because that happened to be mine

As for writing pattern: Clearly I like starting in medias res. Who needs introductions and neat openings when you can just hook your readers into the action! It's really intersting seeing them all lined up like this though, it makes me want to try different things. I'm also seeing more past tense than I was expecting ngl, I feel like I've been writing in present tense a lot recently.

Hmm. Something I like to do is not using names in the first line. Sometimes I add them after the fact, if I think just using pronouns might be confusing for readers. But when I start writing, it's usually after thinking about the story for so long, it's perfectly clear to me who "he" is, so why should I specify Zhao Yunlan?

Sometimes I pick a canon hook to start a story, like the scene in Lost Tomb Reboot where they wait for Wu Xie in the rain, and then take it from there.

Otherwise I guess I ilke to start pretty much in medias res. I'm not really seeing much of a pattern. 😅

My dear friend my beloved thank you for giving me another opportunity to dump more of this bullshit on you.

Blorbo: Pangzi my beloved my everything. He's supposed to be the fat guy comic relief but carries the series honestly.

Skrunkly: I'd say Zhang Rishan but just the bright eyed young man he is in Mystic Nine, not yet the Juimen President and weirdo that he is in Tomb of the Sea. Off topic but it's very important to me that I tell you about this one scene from Tomb of the Sea in which he and Liang Wan, a miraculously still alive female character and his love interest are leaving the desert and she tells him "hey I'm still kinda in love with you" to which he responds "sorry. I've dedicated my life to Fo Ye, my dead boss from the 1930s." And then she blasts him with pepper spray. In the desert.

Scrimblo bimblo: Ba Ye. This funky little man. I've only had him for three episodes of Mystic Nine and I love him.

Glup shitto: Kanjian!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't know what has made my brain latch onto that slingshot himbo but I don't care. Highlights include teaching Wu Xie how to use a slingshot so he can cheat on a test and a guy dragging him into a meeting like "hey I found this guy outside can we keep him?"

Poor little meow meow: Wang Can I guess. He's an asshole but by god was he fun. And Hei Xiazi, who only falls under the pathetic category.

Horse plinko: Liu Sang. He gets whumped to hell and back and we love to see it.

Eeby deeby: Oh absolutely Chen Pi. I've only had him for three episodes of Mystic Nine and I hate him. The living embodiment of "I also choose this guy's dead wife" and a freak (derogatory) among freaks (affectionate). Crimes include wanting to fuck his master's wife and putting Zhang Qiling in a basket.

this tag is always super hard for me bc a) i don’t usually keep the gimp files and b) i obsess over “cleaning” my folders so i usually delete all “used” screenshots as soon as am done with my edit. i got lucky this time when i realized i had actually kept some of the shots used in these :’D

i tried to pick different colorings i've used but with such few options, these all became kind of similar. also my basic coloring is always kind of the same. but i’ll still blabber about each of these a bit:

the seanwhite one has a lot of red/magenda bc of the color scheme i used in the edit. it’s also a lot darker than the original picture bc i wanted the layers to show up some more. i also tried bringing in more warmth by adding more of yellow to their skin etc. it’s a very basic thing i do for pictures in general. there’s also the added noise i love using for edits to bring that rougher feeling to the images.

for both of the pride month post’s pictures i tried picking one color and switching that into the color i had chosen for each character. for shin i’ve turned green into red and for khai i remember turning some of the background blue towards green. so these two show that process more than just simple coloring.

this edit’s main colors ended up being a soft coral pink and a pastel orange. in this picture i’ve tried taking away some of the green and yellow by adding more magenda, red, and blue. i don’t think i’ve done anything more complicated for this. there’s also the added noise once again to bring in more texture.

reboot is very... green originally. so i struggled a bit when i was trying to take some of that away while still trying to keep the green in the background bc i needed that. zql got more blue tones this way (his hoodie). also this pic obviously has an added texture layer which makes the colors brighter/more muted plus brings in the folded paper effect.

the seasons one is my personal favorite when i think about my patpran edits. it was so much fun to do and i love the final edit to bits. it’s very similar to the pride month edit with how i used black and white pictures plus colored pictures. in this one i just kept pran’s skin color (which i made a lot brighter and added more red and yellow) and then turned everything else towards pink.

this pingxie edit has very muted colors and i also wanted to lean more towards blue bc the second picture is Very Blue originally. so i took away most of the green and yellow, added more blue and magenda, and made the picture a lot darker. i think the color change has happened mostly through the hue and saturation options.

all the pictures in the sun & moon signs edit also follow the same pattern i’ve introduced before: make all the colors turn towards the one desired. on the left image i had to work on the background colors separately to make them red without losing wai’s skin color and on the right i got lucky with his bright blue shirt which i could easily turn red. otherwise it’s mostly just curves for brightness and darker shadows etc.

if you have any questions, feel free to ask ^^ i love sharing my editing process but i rarely feel like it’s something i am good at explaining. mostly i just throw things together and see what works. am getting better at it tho and have learned a lot during all this time i’ve been around :’D

DMBJ Ship Sizes

In preparation for the Small-Med Ship Exchange sign ups next week, the spreadsheet of DMBJ ships and how many fics/authors they have has been updated.

If you would like to geek out over numbers, or you’re just curious how many people write for certain ships, take a look at it here!

This specifically looks only at English language fics posted on AO3, and counts up the number of fics where a ship appears as the main or equal main ship in that fic. For the most recent count, gen fics (with no main ship) have also been listed.

Due to some fics having equal main ships, and most authors being multishippers, the percentages add up to more than 100%.

A few interesting numbers facts derived from the current count:

* There are currently a total of 1425 English language fics on AO3, posted across the 9 DMBJ fandom tags.

* There are currently 256 authors who have posted an English language DMBJ fanfic to AO3.

* Authors write for an average of 2.4 ships.

* Pingxie is unsurprisingly the far biggest ship out there (even outstripping genfics in number), with 39.1% of the fics having pingxie as the main ship and 60.1% of authors in the fandom writing for it.

* By comparison, genfics come in second place with 16.2% of fics being genfic and 36.7% of authors writing it.

* Also unsurprisingly, heihua comes in third place with 9.8% of the fics and 18.75% of the authors writing for it.

* Wu Xie remains the fandom’s Little Black Dress, appearing in 24 different ships. Liu Sang is a close second with 23 ships.

WIP Tag Game

things I'm working on (or thinking about but not actually working on because that's who I am at the moment...)

Rot (DMBJ). Putting this one here since I haven't finished writing the last chapter yet, even though most of it is published. No lie this story totally consumed me for like a month. It was supposed to be super horror/supernatural, along the lines of The Guest, but it became a lot more low key creepy/unsettling vibes? Took me a while to stop being disappointed in it for not being what I intended, but I finally started to just appreciate it as is.

Da Qing/Shen Wei friendship quest thing (Guardian) that I started thinking about nearly a year ago and have written NOTHING for so far lol But I need more of these two being kickass awesome bros who bond over the hardships of dealing with ZYL on a daily basis.

A super depressing Wu Xie/Pangzi friendship thing that takes place during Xiaoge's time behind the gate. This whole thing literally spawned out of one line in Rot and explores the difficulties PangXie's friendship endured during that time.

PingXie ghost AU. I went to a spooky fiction writing panel a few weeks ago and one of the writers said being a ghost is basically being in a constant limbo of slowly losing your sense of self and my whole brain screeched to a halt and I mentally slammed my hand on the table and screamed XIAOGE THE SAD AMNESIAC GHOST. So that's a thing now.

Now that I'm done with uni (8 years and 4 degrees later *weeps in student*) and I don't really have a job yet (*weeps in adult*) I'm hoping to devote more time to writing. There's several on this list that are so nebulous they're not worth mentioning, because my brain keeps generating more and more even as I frantically try to get all the ideas down and beg for it to stop.

tbh tho i think my favorite first line I’ve written as of late is from an untitled pangxie ficlet that I wrote under a @psychic-waffles post that i can’t find the link to rn rip. But that’s
