My portfolio book is complete! There are still 2 more web pieces I need to finish but all my printed pieces are done and ready to show at portfolio day on Monday. Only 3 more days! On Monday I’ll make a post to show all the work I’ve presented in here. Hard to believe my career at SSU is almost over! Also I’m totally digging this @pinazangaro screwpost binder and it smells like a cedar closet which is definitely a plus in my book. #design #designer #graphicdesign #graphicdesigner #portfolio #ssuartanddesign #pinazangaro

Test and Tune Thursday. Got the briefcases out today. Cleaned them up and made sure all the locks work and all were in good working order. Had to toss an old leather attaché case out to the free bin. This is why I go through everything! All of these are going on eBay today. All items shown are for sale. Pm me if you are interested. Items will be listed on eBay or Facebook Marketplace. Tools: Printing
Creating an illustration is a fun challenge. Successfully matching the original art when creating a print is another kind of challenge, and not near so much fun.
I do not pretend to be an expert on printing, but have had many people ask what tools I use to print my images and create my print portfolio, so thought it worth a blog post.
I spoke with Noah Klocek at the CTN eXpo, asking what printer he was using as the prints he was selling looked great. He told me he had recently purchased a Canon PIXMA Pro 100 and was quite happy with the prints.
Canon Pixma Pro 100 in action
Rebates seem to be the norm and I was able to purchase the printer at a very reasonable price. Color correcting the images prove to be tough, with numerous color balance and levels adjustment layers, masking out areas of the image, etc. Test prints cost money in paper and ink, but were necessary as the onscreen image rarely represented what printed. Even so, I was happy with the results, once I found the right balance.
An illustrator friend, Susanne Schaefer clued me in on a Photoshop plugin offered by Canon which has made color correcting easier and less expensive. (Though it still takes a bit of work, experimentation, paper, and ink.)
The free plugin i s Canon Print Studio. Once installed, it shows in the Automate menu.
Canon Print Studio
(Note - the final image will be printed on pre-punched paper and the orientation of the image is inverted to place the holes on the left side of the final print.)
Once launched, a new dialogue box and interface displays.
The interface allows you to select the paper, various profiles, color modes, etc.
The color correction tab affords control over the CMY colors, brightness, and contrast. A pattern print, exploring various automated color or brightness/contrast combinations can be generated.
Color Pattern test
Conrast/brightness Pattern test
I start with a color test, selecting the nearest match and refining further.
Layout, paper type, size, etc. can all be selected and a custom profile for each print can be saved (registered).
I still find it remarkable how different the image will appear on screen when compared to the final print.
The color corrected print - note the difference in appearance to what is actually printed
The illustration (above) and the color corrected print below
The print is prepared to be included in an 14″X11″ Pina Zangaro portfolio. Pina Zangaro markets prepunched paper, using Moab Lasal paper. I test prints on 8 1/2″ X 11″ Moab Lasal paper, ensuring the final image will match exactly with my test. Papers have a dramatic impact on the final print, I find it imperative to test on the same paper to be used for the final print.
The print, ready to be included in the portfolio. Note the pre-punched holes.
And inserted into the book
There are a variety of solutions to building a portfolio and printing images, I hope this information proves helpful to some who are struggling. One consideration, the dye based inks used by the Canon PIXMA Pro-100 are not water resistant. I believe that the next printer up in their hierarchy (PIXMA Pro-10) uses pigment based inks which are water resistant. If water resistance is important to you, consider looking for a printer which uses pigment based inks.

A little more than a month ago I had the opportunity to visit the Pina Zangaro design and warehouse facility in San Francisco. Michelle gave me a tour of their warehouse and manufacturing facility, as well as their design space and gallery. I even got a sneak peek at the new Mullen Brothers Imaging facilities that they're in the midst of launching (I cannot wait to have them print some large-format images for me!).
In any case, I just got back in town and look what was waiting for me - my new portfolio! I'm loving it.
The only negative of the visit was that they wouldn't let me move in. Seriously, go check out their warehouse. It's a dream space. I'm still a little bummed that I won't be living there.

I remember reading 'Who Moved My Cheese' years ago. I never understood my reason until this moment. I was comfortable with being in one place when I knew I needed to be in a place that challenged me. And here I am, years later, sitting in ad agencies presenting my work. This humbling moment brings a sense of security with myself and my photography. So I'm appreciative of my 'cheese' being moved to Atlanta. It only makes me work harder and appreciate Birmingham even more. #lynseyweatherspoon #adagency #birminghamal #bham #instagrambham #pinazangaro

Every year presents an opportunity for advancement. And I'm prepared to place my portfolio in front of these creative agencies. I'm hungry y'all. My quiet, yet persistent, demeanor is now on the prowl to achieve a higher level of acceptance and creative prowess. Lynsey Weatherspoon Photography is the name and the brand. Remember it. #atlanta #birmingham #lynseyweatherspoon #agency #portfolio #pinazangaro
