Posted: Sheltering In place Memorial Day Monday . “Xxx one of my three beneficiaries in the #SewingForLives initiative sent me a token of appreciation. I am touched. It was totally unnecessary, because here I was saying thank you to them with my simple donation to help keep them safe as they did their jobs, and I receive this token of gratitude. . f there is one thing that this whole experience of fighting and surviving the corona virus has taught people in general, I think it's that we have a renewed sense of expressing our gratitude both for things big and small. I don't know about you, but I think I have come to better appreciate the service and the effort that people do even on an ordinary basis. Those things that people do because it's part of their job. I'm talking about the people at the groceries, those delivering our packages, our postal workers. Just a few of the people who are delivering essential services, so that you and I can stay at home safe, sheltering in place. Not that I never appreciated those that rendered the service. Back then, the "Thank you" was perfunctory and polite. Now, the gratitude is heartfelt. . No parade today. But we honor all those who served and continue to serve to keep this country safe. A grateful nation, and a grateful Pinay New Yorker, thanks you all.” . . . #memorial day #masks #SewingForLives #netflix #shelteringinplace #NassauCountyPoliceDepartment #coronavirus #facecoverings #coping #gratitude #grateful #longweekend #staycation #NewYork #Zerozerozero #VilmaSantos #ShelteringInPlace #thankful #Pinaynewyorker #PinayNewYorkerWrite #Gothamchickwrites #MakingMyOwnMasks #longweekend #StayHome #StayHomeStaySafe (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAn-KicnSC_/?igshid=1je9nrdswvjmu

#OnTheBlog: In My prayers.. link in bio . . . “Today I write about prayer. I start praying when I walk out the door, as I make my way to the bus stop (which is approximately 6 minutes away) at a leisurely pace. What do I pray for? I reaffirm my faith with The Creed, and then I follow a simple combination of prayers. I used to pray the rosary as I walked and ended it on the bus, but my prayer life has not been as devoted as that in years. Walking out the door with the son has also meant postponing the prayer for when I walk into the church on 43rd, because I end up talking him through what the day will be like. There are times when I put the earphones on and I start listening to the God Minute and I tell him I’m praying, in which case we walk in silence to the bus stop. . New post on the blog: link in bio.. . “That elusive Cheesecake Babka from Breads Bakery— Finally snagged one. I am “partially Jewish” thanks to some friendly influence — more by way of practice and cuisine. My first Chief something boss and the next Chief of something who both observed the holidays introduced me to the important dates. Friends have since exposed me to actual observances and food. I wear a red string bracelet on my left wrist as a token of luck, a present from the so called Wailing wall. So one of my favorite Jewish oriented bakeries is Breads Bakery which I first got introduced to via their kiosk in Bryant Park. My niece, Julia, is a chocolate babka fanatic, so much so that I handcarry the babka home to Manila every time I head that way. When I heard May would see a cheesecake babka on their shelves, I was stoked. The only problem is that they always sold out by the time I came upon their store— until Sunday. Finally! . I grabbed my loaf and couldn’t believe my luck. Definitely well worth the wait! It’s their usual babka with swirls of light cheesecake that are hardly noticeable except for the flavor. This one’s a limited offering so try and get it while you can. “ . #MondayMusing on the blog (link in bio). Happy to be writing again and hoping to write more this year. . . “It’s another rainy Monday today and I'm watching the temps lest it drop again. So last Friday, it rained and temperatures didn't stay at 39 degrees as promised, and instead plummeted to below freezing. Long story short, I went home a bit underdressed but still warm and toasty, but suffered the misfortune of slipping on the ice a few meters from my doorstep. I almost made it but miserably failed despite my lug sole winter boots. I'm lucky that I've always been good at breaking a fall, even if in the end, I have a scraped knee, tenderness at the palm of my hand and at times a sore bum. I survived. I think the temperature is holding above freezing today, so I am optimistic it won't be as treacherous a walk home as Friday's. Spring can't come soon enough.” . . . #gothamchickwrites #pinaynewyorkerwrites #mondaymusingsfromgothamchick #writingagain #ontiktok https://www.instagram.com/p/CZs-zzKupoW/?utm_medium=tumblr

I’m hoping to get back to journaling in 2022 after not being able to do it in 2021. Read about it in the blog (link in bio). . . “I returned to Art journaling in 2020 as a means of keeping my head straight in the thick of the pandemic. I let the juices flow and did sections instead of filling out the pages chronologically. Although I have yet to bind the different sections together and there are some unfinished layouts, in my mind and in my heart, those pages encapsulate what my year was all about. For all the challenges that the opening salvo of covid dealt us, I know I came out with more than what I lost that year. . I began 2021 by working on the first layouts starting with the fold out pages of the year which I traditionally do. And that was that. The year flew by and no art journaling for me. While I'm not too happy with that, all I can say is "Life happens." And it did.” . #gothamchickspeakshermind #pinaynewyorkerwrites #myartjournal #sharedjournal2022 #gothamchicksays #gothamchickwrites #ontheblog #pinaynewyorkerblogs (at New York City, N.Y.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CY157I2uUz4/?utm_medium=tumblr

On the blog: my end of year wrap up for the “21 for 2021” list I wrote at the start of the year. (Link in bio). . . “I tried to write a mid year check in sometime in July of 2021, but failed to finish the post. I’m actually glad that happened because I managed to do some major catching up in the second half of 2021. For the first time in a long while, I was able to accomplish more than what I had hoped to do at the start of the year. (Yay for me!) So here is how I fared against my list at the beginning of 2021. . x x x . All in all and with everything that was going on around us, I still think 2021 wasn’t all that bad. Personally, it was a good year if you consider how my son and I managed to stay healthy throughout the year, despite health challenges suffered by other family members back home.” . . #gothamchickspeakshermind #pinaynewyorkerwrites #21for2021 #gothamchicksays #gothamchickwrites #ontheblog #pinaynewyorkerblogs #mynewyork #mynyc #mymanhattan #theyearthatwas #endoftheyear (at New York City, N.Y.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CYhNyzxOypA/?utm_medium=tumblr

On the blog: “Social Responsibility” (New York Corona Diary) - link in bio . . “The last time I was at the local grocery, they had instituted entry controls and social distancing while waiting in line. Thankfully, they had someone controlling the crowd — not that there were that many people around, but it helped. It meant spending some time just waiting for my turn to go in, but I appreciated the effort of the store to enforce social distancing. I imagine that with the recent mandate from the Governor, we will now be required to wear face covering to enter. Again, I am relieved. . xxx . I know of people living in my community who have tested positive for the virus (worked for an essential service that required the testing), gotten sick as confirmed by his own wife, and gotten better — lucky guy! But I have also seen the same person going around without any effort to self quarantine (14 days required, per the experts), nor even try to put on some form of face covering, whether while hanging out at their stoop or walking their dog. . xxx . True, wearing a mask will not effectively stem the spread of the disease, and neither will it protect you. But in some measure, it is a form of social courtesy that we all need to be conscious of because of the gravity of the situation. . And if we are one of those who are fortunate to survive this disease, we have a social responsibility NOT to spread the infection. Stay home. . . . #gothamchickspeakshermind #pinaynewyorkerwrites #newyorkcoronadiary #stayathome #socialdistancing #gothamchicksays #gothamchickwrites #coronavirus #selfquarantine (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_YR66RnMBa/?igshid=16pwmkmwxex3m

Once upon a time, this was Grand Central. Another vintage postcard find of an interior shot of Grand Central Station. . Postmarked August 7, 1945, Grand Central Annex. There was a pen cancelation as well, although there is no stamp on the card. . Caption: Service Men’s Lounge, Grand Central Terminal, New York City, installed by the New York Central System and the New Haven Railroad. Operated by Traveler’s Aid Society of New York. Equipped with ping pong and pool tables, Library, piano, easy chairs, lunch counter, etc. . This was before the stairs were built leading to what is now the Apple store and service center on this side of Grand Central. That’s a bit of history showing us 1945 vs. 2021. Postcards of the interior of a grand Central were more plentiful in this era. These days, it’s difficult to come by a modern postcard of this main transportation hub of the Metro North and the New York subway system. Most postcards currently available are reprints of vintage prints if not art renditions. . . . . #gothamchickcollectspostcards #inmypostcardcollection #vintagepostcards #newYorkPostcards #VintageNewYorkPostcards #postcardclub #gothamchickcollectspostcardsofnewyork #pinaynewyorker #pinaynewyorkerblog #gothamchickblogs #gothamchickwrites #pinaynewyorkerjournal #pinaynewyorkerwrites #postcardhistory #historyinpostcards #newyorkthenandnow #grandcentralstation #grandcentralthenandnow (at Grand Central Terminal) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQP2m7fHscE/?utm_medium=tumblr
