Today’s #Mnemonic from @edenflighttraining A A A AIMING POINT ATTITUDE AIRSPEED AIMING POINT: On approach to landing, the aiming point (a section of Runway) should remain constant on the windscreen. If it moves up you are too low, if it moves down you are too high and action should be taken to correct. ATTITUDE: Your attitude is controlled by the use of THROTTLE. Attitude governs the glide path and position of the Aiming Point. An increase in power raises the nose, and a decrease in power lowers the nose. AIRSPEED: This is governed by the PITCH of the aircraft and is corrected by inputs of forward and back pressure using the Yoke to control the elevator or stabilator dependent upon the aircraft flown. Pitching Up slows the aircraft and pitching down increases airspeed. The link between Attitude and Airspeed is one which will come with practice and small inputs of throttle and yoke together (known as Pitch and Power) to maintain a constant angle and airspeed will usually be required. An aircraft descending on final approach at a constant rate and airspeed is traveling in a straight line toward a spot on the ground ahead. When on a stabilised approach the runway shape does not change. If the approach becomes shallow, the runway appears to shorten and become wider. Conversely, if the approach is steepened, the runway appears to become longer and narrower. The high winds over the North East today mean that we have taken the decision not to fly following our strict #SafetyFirst approach. The ultimate safety of our students, customers and crew are of paramount importance to us and we pride ourselves on our approach in this regard. Yesterday’s weather meant that we were able to continue our flying activities from our base at #TeessideInternationalAirport with appropriate risk assessments and safety measures in place, with a number of lessons and trial flights taking place during the day. Visiting destinations such as York, Scarborough, Whitby, Pennines, Kendal and the beautiful Roseberry Topping from above is always a pleasure, and we love to share these experiences with our fantastic customers. One of my personal favourite flying sights is the runway numbers prior to takeoff. The anticipation of the exciting flight to whichever planned destination lying ahead once full power is applied and rotate speed is reached is an awesome feeling as a pilot ............. How are Runway Numbers Assigned? Airport / Airfield runways are numbered according to compass bearings. This means runway numbers are based on the compass, with 360 representing north, 90 representing east, 180 representing south, and 270 representing west. Runways are numbered between 01 and 36 with the reciprocal compass bearing to each shown a each end. A fantastic pic very worthy of an individual post:’Northumberlandia - Lady of The North taken from 2000ft today whilst out flying a Trial Lesson. Northumberlandia (the "Lady of the North") is a huge land sculpture in the shape of a reclining female figure, which was completed in 2012, near Cramlington, Northumberland, northern England. Made of 1.5 million tonnes of earth from neighbouring Shotton Surface Mine, it is 34 metres (112 feet) high and 400 metres (1,300 feet) long, set in a 19 hectares (47 acres) public park. Its creators claim that it is the largest land sculpture in female form in the world. It is intended to be a major tourist attraction, with the developers hoping that it will attract an additional 200,000 visitors a year to Northumberland. It was officially opened by Anne, Princess Royal on 29 August 2012.
