Lorenzo di Credi... just incredible, do you see those white highlights? Stunning little show! Italian drawings from the Mariette Collection at the Louvre, Paris. Here • Bust of a Boy Wearing a Cap • from circa 1480. #Pierre Jean Mariette was one of the greatest drawing collectors of all time, with a preference for Renaissance Italy. None of Lorenzo di Credi's portrait drawings can be connected to his surviving easel portraits. Where his painted portraits are rather tame and stiff, his surviving drawings are loose, virtuosic and among the best things he ever did. This sheet must have been made as a study in the workshop, probably depicting a workshop assistant. At least to other drawings depict the same boy, with heads turned and eyes looking up, but this metal-point drawing is my favorite and just magnificent. #lorenzodicredi #dicredi #art #artist #drawing #chalk #metalpoint #boy #youth #installation #portrait #portraiture #study #italiandrawings #artcollector #artcollection #cap #fashion #vogue #italianrenaissance #renaissance #figuration #figurative #theamazingpoppingeyes #pierrejeanmariette #mariettecollection #louvre https://www.instagram.com/p/B2e-OzFAn8z/?igshid=13dkm6rd5ym0u

Michelangelo... what is that on his chin? Stunning little show! Italian drawings from the Mariette Collection at the Louvre, Paris. Here • Head of a Satyr • from circa 1522-30. Pierre Jean Mariette was one of the greatest drawing collectors of all time, with a preference for Renaissance Italy. He acquired this pen drawing and attributed it to Michelangelo, Michelangelo's Florentine period. Although there has been a lot of debate about this attribution, it shows a keen eye and the strength of Mariette's authority. This fantastical head is famous since then and copied numeral times. #michelangelo #michelangelobuonarroti #art #artist #drawing #chalk #sanguine #ink #pen #installation #portrait #portraiture #study #italiandrawings #artcollector #artcollection #satyr #mythology #italianrenaissance #renaissance #mannerism #figuration #figurative #theamazingpoppingeyes #pierrejeanmariette #mariettecollection #louvre https://www.instagram.com/p/B167NVCAc6U/?igshid=1q8gc42flpls2

Paolo Véronèse... do you see the black boy blushing? Stunning little show! Italian drawings from the Mariette Collection at the Louvre, Paris. Here • Portrait of a black boy • from circa 1560-70. Pierre Jean Mariette was one of the greatest drawing collectors of all time, with a preference for Renaissance Italy. When Mariette saw this particular drawing he did recognize the hand of Véronèse, and thought it might be a preparatory sheet for his 'Martyrdom of Saint Justina'. Later he did found out that he was right about Véronèse but wrong about the painting, it seemed to be a study for his 'Saint Barnabas Healing the Sick', a work painted for the Chiesa di San Giorgio in Braida, Verona. In that work you see this young man at the bottom left. The sensual Venetian naturalism was typical for his work at this period. #paolovéronèse #paoloveronese #véronèse #veronese #art #artist #drawing #charcoal #sanguine #crayon #installation #portrait #portraiture #study #italiandrawings #artcollector #artcollection #blackman #intimate #italianrenaissance #renaissance #sensuous #venetian #naturalism #figuration #figurative #theamazingpoppingeyes #pierrejeanmariette #mariettecollection #louvre https://www.instagram.com/p/B14W8KkAUId/?igshid=lv4yzd39hmpt
