Si caes te levanto
12 abril 2021
“Si caes te levanto y si no, me acuesto contigo“.

The self & identity
Nature vs nurture-
Ongoing debate over the importance of genes and socialisation in determining our behaviours and traits.
Sociologists argue that human behaviour is learned and shaped through social interaction.
Identity
As a society, we have constructed the idea that people's identities are the person we are on the inside. We believe this is defined by factors such as gender, age, class, sexuality. The idea is that this never changes: we are who we are.
Identity is not fixed and is not defined by what we would first consider.
Identity does not limit people into particular roles and categories because nothing is fixed – it is free-floating.
Sigmund Freud
Freud had a theory of self centred on unconscious mind-
The mine consists of three related parts-
ID – basic inborn drive – instinctive psychic energy – goal is pleasure and avoid pain – selfish.
Ego – the realistic aspect of the mind that mediates between ID and superego.
Superego- concise (moral) and ego ideal (ideally who we should be) internalised demands of society. Developed as a result of parental guidance.
Michael Foucault
Identity is a form of oppression and a way of exercising power over people, preventing them from moving outside fixed boundaries.
He disagrees with the notion of collective identity, the body should conform to a set of rules to define them- free-floating.
In terms of power being part of a person's identity, foucault is keen to point out that we as people do not possess power, we exercise it.
We are not born powerful people, it is learned behaviour, exercised over people.
"Powers everywhere, not because it embraces everything, but because it comes from everywhere... Power is not an institution, and not a structure; neither is it a certain strength we are endowed with, it is a name that one attributes to a complex strategical situation in particular society." - (Fucault 1998:93)
" We are all just actors trying to control my job public image, react based on how others might see us". - (Erving Goffman)
We present ourselves in six ways-
Persona- the different personality 'masks' we were in different situations, different people.
Performance- this refers to how we wear our persona or personality mask.
Staging- what do we need for our 'performance'?
Teams – who do we 'perform' with? Who forms part of our 'team'?
Role – this refers to what individual role we have in the team.
Personal style – this is unique, individual aspects of yourself you bring to teams, roles, persona and how you stage things! This is what makes you different to others!
"What to do? How to act? Who to be? These are focal questions for everyone living in circumstances of late modernity- and ones which, on some level or another, all of us answer, either discursively or through day-to-day social behaviour." (Gidden 1991:70)

Has technology changed our concept of the self-portrait?
Facebook
Instagram
Snapchat
The selfie
It’s a compulsion for almost anyone with a camera, artist or not, to turn it on themselves… The self-portrait has increasingly become very much part of our vernacular and all the more widespread with the growth of social media websites.
Are these self portraits or simply pictures people take of themselves?

We are becoming advertisements of ourselves!
My beliefs are that the self-portrait has a lot more thought put into it, vision. The consideration of the environment and a narrative. Yourself a is purely about appearance and an online personality, it does not incorporate artistic views or consideration of a narrative.

I think this is a very clever incorporating a shock aspect whilst also following trends.
