So I found this (totally real*) playlist of cutscenes from a game called 'Pico Riders'. Judging from the name, it was a Pico's School version of Sonic Riders and the characters had waaaaaayyy more different designs from the original ones e.g Nene had a sun visor.

What's really interesting about the game is that: there were multiple story modes following different teams. But the main part is a big hoverboard race, silly shenanigans and some interesting lore.

This scene is from after Pico, Darnell and Cyclops save Nene from being kidnapped by a mysterious stranger. Unfortunately, she was quite unhappy with how things turned out during the rescue, especially with Pico...

Honestly I think the only thing that can convince me to come back to Mario Kart is Falcon being added as a playable character. Bonus if we also get any combination of Samus, Fox, Robert, Pico, Goroh and the Mach Rider

The downside with running a Knight Rider-style LED chaser circuit via a Pi Pico is that the max rated GPIO output current across all the pins is like 50 mA.

With the typical draw of an indicator LED being around 20 mA, that's going to be right on the edge with one LED on and two additional being ramped down - and just straight up impossible if I want to run anything more intensive than that.

The solution then is to have a component in between that is turned on via signal from the Pico, but draws its power from elsewhere - preferably a 5V source compared to the 3.3V the Pico delivers. Said component also needs to be able to turn on and off at a rate equal to that of the PWM frequency, so about a thousand times per second or so.

In short, I'm going to need a bunch of transistors of some kind...

Well, I can see two routes to this.

If they end up being dumped into the BNHA world, more or less all or most of them should have some kind of quirk. For example, in TRC, Syaoran and co receive powers corresponding to the (CLAMP) world they entered. If anyone of them should be designated quirkless, I'll pick Keiwa. I can't think of no one else to get the Deku treatment than Keiwa, or you can also say I'm biased also wwww

ALL of them are quirkless... but their Desire Drivers end up giving them powers that were similar to quirks.

Analysis

Before I retired, when people asked me why I cycled quite so hard, I used to quote Calvin's dad: "The secret to enjoying your job is to have a hobby that's even worse."

The more serious reasons last beyond retirement: it's a physical as well as a mental challenge; it's just me and the bike; it keeps me in good shape, both physically and mentally; the feedback is immediate; and it lets me see places up close and get to know them better, both at home and abroad.

One of my retirement resolutions was to get properly fit, like the old guys who would leave me panting behind them when I was a 40-something audaxer (that is, a baby of that sport). I didn't get the best start, thanks to the Covid Inquiry. While I really enjoyed riding in the Dolomites in June, I found I didn't have the legs for challenge routes, in the way I had when I was younger; and I am not yet ready to join the Long Lunch group. No disrespect to them: they are strong riders on the flatter Classic routes, have ridden a hard week, and have enjoyed doing it their way, which is gregarious; but I don't think I'll ever want to do it that way.

I came back from Italy determined to do something about my fitness; assumed the answer must just be to ride my bike further and harder; set off to ride 200 km round Fife, which once I'd have done and come back for more; ran out of gas in Kirkcaldy at 160 km; and had to get the train home.

So I started paying more attention to what Garmin had been telling me about my riding, and my wellbeing more generally. I trained more scientifically for August and September, lost some more weight, and began getting better rest and recovery. I hoped to be in better shape for Andalusia, but two months is not really long enough to get properly fit for this kind of riding.

It made a difference, though. Comparing Andalusia and the Dolomites, this week I have ridden:

61% further: 714 km over 6 days

32% higher: 15,488 metres of ascent

24% stronger, if I believe what my power-meter has been telling me (I probably do, but have some research to do on that when I get home); and

18% faster: it's not a race, but I was fast enough to make the Challenge Routes possible, which is what matters.

I set myself to complete all the Challenge Routes this week, provided I enjoyed doing it. I did, and I have. I wasn't keeping score among the group, but I think only Jules and I did all six (our paths haven't crossed much during the week).

My Garmin's helped while I've been here. Now that I've learned how to read what it tells me about my stamina during a ride, I've used that to pace myself through six hard days back to back, and I've not been close to running out of gas.

I'm really happy with how the week's turned out; but there is more I'd like to do, now that I have a better idea how to do it, to enjoy more of these challenges while I still can.

I'm not the oldest in this group. I'm not the youngest either. I'm fitter than nearly all the younger ones (who don't have as much time to train as I do); but there are older ones who are faster than me on a given climb, and that's something to aim for.

Though I was faster in these mountains than in the Dolomites, I was 10% faster still on harder rides in similar mountains in the Picos in 2015, I think that's a re-attainable level. My Garmin reckons my fitness age now is roughly the chronological age I was in 2015; and I wasn't training scientifically back then. 

I'm a good all-round rider, though more an endurance rider than a sprinter; a better descender than many; and particularly good at pacing myself and keeping moving with a minimum of faffing around ordering beers.

I'm better on climbs than I used to be, but I'm at my best on a gradient of about 4%, and I'd like that to be 8% or even steeper: "so get into the gym," is the consensus advice from the stronger climbers. It's about adding strength to endurance while keeping weight under control; but muscle weighs more than fat, so you have to train for strength without bulking up. It is easy to tell the Fast Climbers from the Long Lunchers when you see them side-by-side in Lycra.

The nature of a six-day challenge is such that my Garmin has had to put up with me ignoring its advice about recovery times. After weeks of patting me on the head for an "optimal" training load, in the past few days it's described what I've been doing as "unproductive," "strained," and "overreaching," and been increasingly urgent in advocating some down-time. It's time to pay attention to that again, so I'll have a few weeks of "active recovery" – riding as and when I feel like it, and enjoying trips to London and Wiesbaden. .

Then it will be into the gym and back on the bike – possibly in the snow, for the Rapha Festive 500 challenge, though I am not quite that much like Calvin's dad – to make a start on a proper training plan for 2025, with the aim of enjoying future challenge rides.
