hey can you imagine if in cabinet of curiosities episode 5: pickman's model they spent the first 20 minutes introducing thurber and his girlfriend and having him apply to art school and meeting his classmates for no reason and it took 21 minutes of an hour long anthology episode to meet the titular pickman? can you imagine? well that's exactly what happened with cabinet of curiosities episode 6: dreams in the witch house.

The Cabinet of Curiosities' adaptation of Pickman's Model pretty clearly does not believe the original story can be stretched out into an hour (probably correct, honestly). The problem is that instead of trying to build on the source material, the show chooses to bolt on a completely unrelated concept, while still keeping the original twist. Like, this can either be a story about a painter of disturbing creatures who turns out to be using real references, or it can be a story about some cursed paintings. Trying to do both at the same time means they just undercut each other. Be honest with me, if you weren't already familiar with the original story, would Thurber picking up the photograph in the cellar even register to you? Or would you just assume Pickman's paintings were summoning monsters somehow?
Speaking of Thurber, this creates a pitfall for his character because it hinges on the original twist. Instead of having him be Pickman's supporter until he sees the photograph, the show has him turn on Pickman at the 10 minute mark which means we get 50 minutes of him whining about cursed paintings. No buildup, no change. And no, throwing in a time skip and some veiled references to his alcoholism and failed artistic endeavors does not help.
And since no discussion of this episode would be complete without mentioning Crispin Glover's crazy fucking accent: it is the most sincere recreation of Lovecraft's phonetic New England dialogue I've ever heard, 10/10. Out of respect for his commitment, I will ignore the fact that Pickman definitely doesn't talk like that in the story.

Pickman's Model (Cabinet of Curiosities, episode 5)
Plot
Will is a young artist but his world gets shattered once he sees the grotesque paintings of his new classmate Richard. They seem to be out of this world horrifying, demonic, cursed; and they don't stop having an effect on Will once he stops looking at them. Years later he meets Richard again and his presence and his paintings start haunting Will once more. Classic Lovecraft story!
Opinion
The highs are so high and the lows are so low for me in this one. Like all the other Cabinet of Curiosities movies i've watched so far this one was very very well shot and directed and it had a few moments/scenes that i'm really glad i got to see because they were just right. But it also gets extremely comically over the top at points which did kinda ruin it for me. So this one is another eh, if you like the concept or story idea you're probably going to enjoy it and if it sounds boring to you then you can skip it without missing out on too much. Another one of those "works better in written form" type of stories.

"Pickman's Model" is obviously the best Lovecraft story because it's the least Lovecraft story. On one hand, you have POV guy, who is Broken By The Horrors. On the other hand, you have Richard Pickman, whose first instinct when confronted by Horrors Beyond His Comprehension is to paint it and then shoot it in the face. Top tier character, 100% the best response to The Horrors, no notes whatsoever

Meet the artist, please
Hey!
"Meet the artist" is a "Call of Cthulhu" (2018 game)/"Pickman's Model" crossover that I hope to finish one day. Edward Pierce, the protagonist of CoC, investigates a disappearance of an young socialite and meets a rather suspicious, even... ghoulish artist named Richard Upton Pickman.
Pierce found the house easily - a narrow two-story red brick building. In the gathering dusk, the house appeared to be uninhabited and gloomy; the dark windows on the second floor only added to the oppressive feeling. One might have thought that the house was watching him like some lurking creature… or that his frayed nerves were tricking him again. "I don't have time for this," Pierce muttered to himself. He climbed the stone steps and knocked on the door. No answer. Pierce knocked again, then pulled the doorknob. To his surprise, it gave way and the door opened silently. It looked as if the hinges had recently been oiled. Contrary to the first gloomy impression, Peterson's house was quite tidy inside. A single, dim light bulb illuminated the small hallway, as if the owner had just left the front door unlocked, expecting to return soon. "Mr. Peterson? My name is Pierce, I'm a private investigator. I'd like to ask you a few questions, if you don't mind."
