Beethoven: Piano Sonata ’’Les Adieux’’ op. 81
My second post is about a piece which is a monument of friendly love, which is often underappreciated in classical music. The sonata ’’Les Adieux’’(Farewell) is his 26th sonata, one of the last piano pieces from the middle period. It is a programmatic and autobiograhpic piece too. He composed this piece from 1809 to 1810. In 1809, Napoléon Bonaparte attacked Vienna, and Beethoven’s patron (and close friend) Archduke Rudolphe had to leave the city. The Archduke was an accomplished musician, and other famous works, such as the Hammerklavier Sonata, Missa Solemnis or the Archduke Trio were also dedicated to him.
This sonata tells the story of the Archduke’s departure, his absence and return in three movements.
I. Das Lebewohl (The Farewell)
II. Abwesenheit (Absence)
III. Das Wiedersehen (The Return)
The sonata’s title originates from the first movement. The syllabes of the German word Lebewohl are written above the first three chords, forshadowing the Leitmotif technique later used by romantic era composerts such as Liszt and Wagner.
I chose a recording by Richard Goode, who is the first American pianist to record all the piano sonatas by Beethoven.
Enjoy! - Noémi Baki-Szmaler, guest editor - @une-barque-sur-l-ocean

Since i set myself the Challenge of learning all of Ludwig van Beethovens piano sonatas. I also listen to many recordings of all the sonatas. Almost every pianist recorded at least a few of them and many well known pianists recorded all of the sonatas. There are so many great interpretations. That it is hard to choose a best one. Igor Levits recording is pretty young and it counts already as one of the best interpretations out there. A pretty rare recording is the one from Claude Frank. He was a student of Arthur Schnabel and you can often here his influence in this recording. An amazing recording. Alfred Brendels recording is an all time favorite and must always be listened to when working on a beethoven Sonata. But my all time favorite is still Friedrich Guldas interpretation. This was the recording that made me fall in love with these sonatas in the first place. I always come back to Guldas interpretation. Although his tempos are often insane he is able to pull it off and still interpret the piece wonderfully. What are your favorite recordings of Ludwig van Beethovens piano sonatas?

“The Sound of Classic” by @nikartacademy oil on canvas, 100x120 cm, 2020. Junko Inanobe, a Japanese musician, plays a classical piece on the piano in his master class at the Vienna @hausdermusik_vienna in October 2019. Magnificent Junko’s playing and the sound of the piano from @klavierhausfoerstl inspired me to paint a portrait. #hausdermusik #beethoven #beethoven2020 #wienbeethoven2020 #yamaha #bechstein @colinjboyd @_.jiddy._ @stadtwien #hitachinaka #wienersymphoniker @viennasymphony #beethoven250 #lpo @londonphilharmonicorchestra #hoffmann #classicalmusician #pianosolo #pianoplayer #pianoworldwide #rachmaninov #pianosonata #grandpiano #japan #improvisation #pianist #chopin #bach #classicpiano #operetta #müzik #instaclassical #hitachinakacity #nikartacademy @klavierhausfoerstl (at Haus der Musik) https://www.instagram.com/p/CJdo18wjep-/?igshid=4q3ss6mi2yle

I enjoyed some Beethoven today, played by Maurizio Pollini for Deutsche Grammophon: Piano Sonata No. 30 in E major, Opus 109 1. Vivace ma non troppo. I have barely scratched the surface when it comes to Beethoven’s rich piano output, which no doubt influenced the composers after him. There is such feeling and subtlety in these works, along with the tempestuous storms which we not unjustly associate with this genius.

Listening to Beethoven's piano sonatas op.31 on his 38th anniversary of death #glenngould #beethoven #piano #pianosonata #musiclover https://www.instagram.com/p/CF7MWckDBUL/?igshid=1oyuwshj6wui6

This two weeks were dreadful to focus on my practice. I must admit, that I need to understand more how to practice better and efficient. New techniques and practice it slowly is the key to improve yourself. • Episode 21 -229/10'000 #musician#music#scherzo#brahms#piano#pianist#practice#techniques#improvement#slowly#rest#spitzenförderung#workethic#performance#hardworker#concentration#dedication#pianosonata (hier: Aarau Aare) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1maZHVg8tM/?igshid=1dybjkj381l3y
