06 April 2018: One random true story

This is worth the share.

Meron kasi mga bagay na hindi planado pero nangyayari. Lalo na kung ang panahon at pagkakataon na ang gumawa ng way para mangyari yun.

I am very vocal about having a lot of people who I look up to in terms of Broadcast Journalism and Sports Media. Andami kong idols pagdating jan na tipong most of them, naging dahilan why I pushed to take Communication Arts in Letran. It sure is a long list of names like: Vicky Morale, Karen Davila, Howie Severino, Pia Arcangel, Patty Laurel, Cesca Litton, Dyan Castillejo and Pia Boren.

On my list, I have met four already. First off was Dyan Castillejo whom I have had the privilege to ask one question pa nga during the seminar for Courtside Reporters in ABS-CBN in 2009. Nahihiya pa nga ako mag selfie with her that time kasi she was also in a hurry after her quick talk. Truth be told, kahit na ilang beses ko na sya nakikita sa mga Azkals game, nahihiya pa rin ako lumapit sa kanya. Iba kasi yung feeling na iaaproach mo yung childhood idol mo ee.

Then meeting Pia Boren came quickly for the photoshoot for the courtside reporters and hopefuls for Chalk Magazine. Wala din proof of selfie but she was so nice. Just like Dyan, nahihiya ako iapproach sya even if she is so nice. Baka that time, na starstruck din ako sa kanya coz she is so pretty.

In 2015 or 2016 - forgive me coz I am not so sure of the year, an Azkals home game paved way for me to meet Cesca Litton. She was covering the game for CNN Philippines and back then, I was just a plain fangirl. Tingin ko that was the most emotional moment for me meeting my idol kasi sobrang unexpected. It took some friends pa nga to convince me to approach her - if it wasn't for them, baka nga di ako nakalapit kay Cesca. A foto op did happen, told her even about watching her as a courtside reporter and wanting to be like her.

Fast forward to 2018 - dahil sobrang nakakausap ko sya sa twitter, I made sure I shared my success of becoming Fox Sports Digital Ambassador to Cesca, telling her na most of it did come from her dahil nga of all the courtside reporters I idolized, sya yung super sinubaybayan ko. It is her who I looked up a lot in sports media, more than Pia Boren or Patty Laurel or even Dyan Castillejo. I wanted to meet her again because since I told her the good news, she has been so helpful to me pero sabi ng panahon at pagkakataon, hindi na muna. Pero alam ko na magkikita kami ulet and I will get to thank her personally for inspiring me - the same way as how I was able to thank the fourth person from the media that I met by chance last night.

I always have been a fan of documentaries. Originally, maging Investigative Journalist ang gusto ko pero dah either pinapatay or they eat death threats for breakfast, sabi ko sa sarili ko, pati na rin ng nanay ko, mag concentrate ako sa other field of the media. That's where sports media came in kasi I also love sports. Feeling ko nga athlete ako kasi I run. However, venturing into sports media did not make me love documentaries less. In fact, I do watch docus on NatGeo to stay awake while I do my articles and edit videos.

Then in a perfect timing, after my assignment for Fox Sports, while I was walking along Greenbelt with some companions along, nakita ko si Sir Howie Severino - isa sa mga pillars ng I-Witness na walang sawa kong pinapanuod kahit na magpalit palit pa sya ng timeslots sa Kapuso network. Naglalakad sya so I called him out, I have to instantly think of a way to make him stop by and talk to me so I introduced myself in a way that I have not done to any of the media personalities na nakilala ko - use my current job.

"Hi Sir Howie, I am Xy-Zha from Fox Sports Asia and I am a fan of you." I told him.

True, mejo makapal lang ang mukha ko for doing that but it worked. He stopped by, smiled tapos nakipag kwentuhan pa sa akin pati sa mga kasama ko. We told him na galing kami sa isang football related event to which laking gulat ko when he said na football coach sa America ang kapatid nya. Ang cool nya kausap, may pagka-millenial.

It was a now or never moment for me kaya naman tinodohan ko na ng effort to tell him this:

"Sir, maraming salamat po sa inspiration because isa po kayo sa dahilan why I took up AB Communication Arts."

Nakaka-touch when he smiled at me and said:

"Wow, that's good. And now you are with Fox Sports, right? Congratulations, keep it up at maraming salamat din for supporting my craft."

Ang surreal ee! I never imagined na masasabi ko yun but I did. Truth be told, yung feeling is the same as thanking one of my Comm Profs for shaping me to be the person I am today then they would appreciate it that you are grateful. As in parang nung kay Sir Pinlac lang din na nagawa ko magpasalamat in person. That's how massive the effect is to me.

Nakaka proud lalo that I am on this journey kasi it paves way for me to meet people na akala ko sa pangarap lang makikilala.

But then again, dreams really do come true. Eto pa proof ohh:

Vandalized, substandard road signs a danger to motorists

Vandalism has rendered many street and road signs in Metro Manila almost useless, endangering the thousands of motorists plying the thoroughfares everyday. This was in addition to pilferage, improper placing of the signs, and non-compliance with the Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals by local government units, according to representatives from the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and National Center for Transportation Studies of the University of the Philippines.   When GMA reporter Pia Arcangel, together with Engr. Aileen Mappala of UP NCTS and Engr. Neomie Recio of MMDA, visited some parts of Manila to check on the condition of road signs, they noticed road and street signs that can no longer be recognized because they were either covered with stickers or spray-painted over. Some were even damaged, possibly by vehicles.   Recio said there is a team from MMDA that monitors and repairs signs that were vandalized and destroyed, although she admitted the manpower is not enough for the size of Metro Manila.   “Kaya lang sobrang laki ng Metro Manila so limited lang ‘yung mga tao natin,” she said.   She was thankful that there were private citizens who call their attention to signs that need to be repaired. Dated signs The group also noticed signs that needed to be replaced or removed as they were no longer applicable to the present state of road where they were situated. There were also non-reflectorized or unlit road work signs that could be dangerous to motorists at night.   In a separate interview, Director Melvin Navarro of the DPWH Planning Service, which is in-charge of road work signs, admitted their shortcoming in the design of the signages.   “Dapat talaga e-reflectorized ‘yung mga signs nila so siguro baka hindi lang nastriktuhan ‘yung sa project engineer namin. Dapat name-maintain namin ito kasi ito ang makaka-save sa tao,” he said. Pilferage   Stolen street and road signs are another problem, he said.   “Ang medyo problema lang talaga namin [ay] ‘yung mga nawawala [na road signs], ninanakaw talaga,” Navarro said.   On the other hand, to avoid accidents involving concrete barriers, MMDA’s Recio said they replaced their barriers with reflectorized and flexible ones.   “Kahit mabangga, hindi masisira sasakyan mo kasi flexible ito,” she said. “Tapos sa gabi, kitang kita mo ito.” Road accidents   According to the NCTS, some $1.9 billion or P83.2 billion are wasted a year due to road accidents.   Aside from the lack of traffic and warning signs, the other causes of road accidents are vehicle malfunction due to neglect, overspeeding, overloading, traffic violations,  and  bad  condition  of  roads.   Mappala said the country’s road sign manual was based on the Vienna Convention but it is not being followed.   “Merong hindi nagpa-follow, meron din ‘yung lumang sign na ang ginagamit,” she said. Jurisdiction   Having three agencies sharing responsibilities over road signs does not help in standardizing traffic signs, the report said.   The DPWH is responsible for the road signs in national highways, MMDA has jurisdiction over Metro Manila, and Department of Interior and Local Government in cities and municipalities.   With politicians having their own “color,” every city sports street and road signs with different colors and forms.   The Philippines is a state party to the Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals, which provides the international standard color, size and shape for each traffic and road signs and markings. - KBK, GMA News

PASIG CITY, Feb. 20 (PIA) -- National Capital Region Police Office Chief Police Major General Vicente Danao has lauded and expressed his gratitude to Marikina City Mayor Marcy Teodoro for effectively maintaining peace and order in the city and keeping their citizens safe.

During his recent visit in the country’s "Shoe Capital," Danao thanked Mayor Marcy for the city's continued support to the plans and programs of Team NCRPO, particularly on the effectiveness and efficiency in enforcing the law to maintain the peace and order in the city.

The NCRPO chief also laid out his programs and intensified campaign of the PNP leadership in relation to the "No Take Policy" on all forms of illegal activities.

Likewise, Mayor Teodoro also assured their full support to Team NCRPO specifically those of mutual benefit for peace and order, as well as the development of the city.

Danao was joined by PBGen Benjamin Acorda, Deputy Regional Director for Operation; PBGen Matthew Baccay, Eastern Police District Director and PCol Restituto Arcangel, Marikina City Chief of Police in the courtesy call to Teodro. 

On the same day, Danao proceeded to the Marikina City Police Station. This is to certify that policemen were all accounted for, to ensure that they are fulfilling their duties and responsibilities as well as to check on the cleanliness of every office or unit. (PIA NCR)
