Boy next world thoughts ⌛ ep 5

I really like how in this episode we got more of cir and his conscience being the "dark cir" cause you see the clocks and hourglasses which obviously depicts the time! Time is fleeing and in time conversations and decisions are made ones that can impact your future. And in Cir case when he's facing the "dark cir" he's telling him how do u feel when u see this other world I have my phu and u have yours. He goes on to say don't be a coward if you want phu in your future. Cause cir didn't make the right choices when he had the chance in front of him. He didn't talk to phu in back in the way when he had the chance with cup phones. That could've been their start of a relationship to get to know each other but cir let that go and u can see him visibly regret it in that scene when he watches phu walk past him. Cause now he's got phu but is he gonna be able to keep him or let him go. "Dark cir" has made the choices he was too scared to do and the only way he can have phu truly is to be honest and not so cowardly. He's spent most of his time just being around phu watching him cause he couldn't dare to be close to him with his mom on his back the danger phu could be in if she found out her son has his eyes on a boy and not focusing on his studies and the education she wants for him so bad. So when he has these dreams or nightmares and It's what could've been what he craves for but as you see he gets literally rejected out of them cause this isn't his life. He didn't do anything when he had the chances, it's like he doesn't have those happy moments with phu even in his dreams. So him starting over and having to now pursue phu is now his goal. Especially when he realizes where his life was about to go he was about to die he got hit by a car and so it was a wake up call. To snap out of that fear and see this second chance and do all the would've could've should've. But as we see the mom he's still trapped and that's gonna hold him back a lot and he's still got time that's fleeting away it's not on his side especially with the mom being so heavy on her goal and intentions with phu. Cause him keeping his distance and loving phu from afar will not get him anywhere. So his subconscious or "dark cir" is again saying every choice you make will impact your future greatly even so at times and that choice takes u through a path that leads to a future that is unpredictable. Right now cir feels trapped but he's gonna have to be brave and steer away from the future that is expected of him from his mom and do what he wants if he wants phu in it for real this time!

Boss/Noeul for The Boy Next World

So we got official confirmation (that we were all expecting) that Boss and Noeul will be playing Cirrus and Phugun respectively in The Boy Next World series coming form Mame/MeMindY. I read the whole novel in about 2 days...finishing up 4 hours prior to the announcement. (Poor decision making on my part honestly.) But I wanted to talk about the novel and basic story, the characters and what I think makes Boss and Noeul a good fit for them, some concerns, and some moments in the novel I'm excited to see.

I am going to attempt to sort of graduate spoilers, so we'll start with no spoilers, move on to potential mild spoilers, and the on to pretty moderate-severe ones. I will clearly mark each transition, so you can stop reading when you like.

No Spoiler Section- Story and Character Summaries

We'll start by going over the basic summary of the story. Phugun and Cirrus are university students that live in the same apartment building. One night Cirrus shows up at Phugun's apartment and tells him that he is his boyfriend. Phugun is understandably confused, as despite having attended the same high school and university, they've NEVER interacted before, but invites him in. Cirrus asserts that he is from a parallel universe where they had started dating in high school. From there it's a bit of a shenanigans ensue situation, but Phugun, being soft-hearted, agrees to try and help Cir get back to his own world, and Cir simply can't help doting on whatever Phugun is available to him. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you might yell.

Now to the characters:

Phugun (often called Phu) is a 2nd year humanities student. He is described as small, cute, and a bit silly. He's also quite feisty and soft-hearted (though he doesn't present that side of himself) and importantly he's kind of superstitious. It is a main character point that he believes that wearing certain colors on certain days will bring him luck, and on days where he can't bad things happen to him. He's an only child and his father passed away when he was in middle school or junior high, so probably about 12-13. After that his mother began travelling abroad, leaving him under the supervision of an aunt. He has a close-knit group of university friends, though from what I can tell none of them pre-date uni.

Cirrus (most often referred to as Cir or P'Cir) is a 4th year business management student. He is described as tall and very handsome, often pursued by other students, but he entertains no one. His nickname on campus is Ice Prince, and many people seem to be afraid of his dark glowers. He does have a small group of friends as well, one from high school (or possibly previously) and one that appears to be just from university. He is the eldest of two children, with a 1 year younger brother (Zone), and his parents are divorced. With Phugun, Cirrus becomes warm and doting, in contrast to the cold persona he presents otherwise.

Now reading through those descriptions you may think...those sound kind of a lot like Rain and Payu...and you are correct. Beginning the novel, I had the same concerns, that these characters were far to similar to their LITA ones and wouldn't offer much space for growth and progression as actors. I have also read the LITA novels (they're actually the only Mame novels I had read before embarking on the Boy Next World) and while I enjoyed Love Storm, I did feel that there wasn't A LOT of serious depth or emotional growth happening in the novel. This is not bad, it's simply my observation, and I enjoyed the novel and series regardless. Through the BNW novel we do have access to both leads points of view and a lot more detail about their backstories, so they are far more fleshed out, complex characters from the start. Because of this, I am potentially hopeful of some really affecting moments that will give Boss and Noeul a great opportunity to really stretch their acting wings. I've made a post before about Noeul's acting specifically, as Rain is incredibly different from him overall, and that remembering that definitely increased my appreciation of his performance there. Rain as a roles is more one that seems simple because he's kind of the most relatable, but for him to be so different from Noeul would offer a specific set of challenges.

There are also a couple of instances in the novel that I think Boss and Noeul in particular could convey very well....

Parallel World Set-up

I also want to give a small explanation of the parallel world basis for the novel, as there are many wildly different systems used in fictional stories, some more complex than others. Below is a pretty basic diagram of the type of parallel world set-up we're looking at.

It's pretty basic, the timeline moves forward and a certain point an occurrence or decision changes the course of the timeline creating to separate but parallel worlds (hence why they travel in the same direction together). In media this divergence point can be anything, in Sliding Doors it's Gwenyth Paltrow's character catching the train versus missing it, but it can also occasionally be a decision. A yes leads to one future, no leads to another, similar to a choose your own adventure story. The divergence point is revealed in the novel, but I won't spoil that, but that decision creates Timeline B where Cirrus and Phugun meet and begin dating in high school. That is the only difference between the two timelines. The orange dashed line is the inciting incident of the novel itself where Cirrus-B ends up in timeline A, and Cirrus-A ends up in timeline B.

I'm going to finish up with trigger warnings for the novel (and likely the series) if you choose to pick it up prior to the show coming out. There are some pretty serious instances of emotional and physical abuse of Cirrus at the hands of his mother, starting from when he was a child. There are also a couple of instances of homophobia. Most of this stems from two specific characters, but there are insensitive and degrading comments made by sort of background characters as well. Grief and grieving is also a potential trigger, as there is discussion related to the death of Phugun's father throughout the novel. As someone who has lost both parents, I did cry at these moments.

Mild to Moderate Spoilers- Scenes and aspects I would like to see in the series

So there are a handful of portions of the book that I really would like to see in the series, and a couple of 'silly' things that I think would just be fun/funny. I'll start with those.

Since we've now established the potential for recasting... I think it would be hilarious if Mame cast a bunch of the actors from the friend group in LITA as the friends in BNW. Specifically Pepper as P'Ren, one of Cirrus's friends who is obsessed with his tropical fish. It would just give the whole thing a bit of a community theater vibe, and I love that.

Since we have a a parallel or alternate universe situation, cast the previous Cir and Phu (Haii and Title) from TharnType 2 as the other versions of them. We don't actually see the other versions in the novel, but it feel like it would be funny like in the opening credits to see like side-by-sides of their lives/timelines.

Now on to actual story points and scenes from the novel I really want to see, and one I kind of hope we don't. We shall get the No out of the way first:

-I do think it is important to keep the child abuse storyline, but I very much hope that it is kept very circumspect or minimal in the show. I would especially not like to SEE it. I think maybe having Cir and Phu talk about it, maybe with audio-overlays or allusions to what happened. But it's pretty dark, and I don't want something like what we got in Don't Say No. Mostly because I have concerns about how filming those scenes can psychologically impact a child actor.

Now the YES's:

-I very much want to see the potential or alluded to second couple of P'Wim and Jin (who are friends of Cir and Phugun). Their vibe is one best described as Hermione Granger and Luna Lovegood, and their interactions in the novel were delightful. I'm sure how much we'll get depends on the episode count, but I'm hopeful for more than a Ryu/Sun situation in Wedding Plan.

-As discussed, Phugun has some superstitions related to the clothes he wears, and in the novel this goes all the way down to underwear. I would love to see like a calendar montage where you see him rotating through a rainbow of different colored outfits. (It would be delightfully gay.)

-I want Zone to be in the show. He's only present a couple of times in the novel, but I do feel that he's necessary to the story and that removing him would negatively impact Cirrus's character/backstory, as his relationship with his brother does play a role in a lot of his choices. But in the novel, they have a fun dynamic, and his interactions with Phugun are quite sweet, so I feel like it would be a great inclusion.

-There are a couple of instances in the story where Cir sings Phugun to sleep to comfort him. We know Boss has a lovely singing voice, I would like to see that.

-There is a scene related to a musical instrument that was left to Phugun by his late father, but Phugun can't play it. In the scene Cirrus plays it for him, and it's one of the scenes that made me absolutely lose it. Now the instrument isn't a guitar, but since we know Boss can play guitar, I don't think it's unreasonable to just change the type of instrument, as that doesn't really affect the story. Though I am aware that a lot of viewers hate the "guitar in BLs" trope, there is a real emotional gravitas to this scene that I think it would be unfortunate to lose.

-Lastly, there are not many NC scenes in the novel, I think 3 fully explicit ones and a couple that are alluded to. But the first one is a BJ in which Phu is receiving and Cir is performing. Now BJs in general are rarely even portrayed in BL, for many reasons, but the fact that it's not easy to film in a manner that would get by censors, or to portray in a romantic light are probably major factors. It's also something that could be far more uncomfortable for the actors to film. But when they are even hinted at it's often the 'Top' who is receiving, we honestly rarely see concentrated effort from a 'Top' to pleasure their 'bottom' without achieving their own 'completion.' I think a lot of this stems from the heteronormative relationship aspects traditionally applied to BL couples. Just as there's an idea in heteronormative/patriarchal society that a woman is there to provide pleasure to the man, and a man is not obligated to return it, that get's saddled on homosexual characters, leading to a situation where we rarely see Tops do much more than prep and penetrate (and the prep is often off screen). It's something that bugs me regularly, even in shows I really like. It's something you see with Kinn/Porsche, with Dean and Pharm in UWMA. These are characters where there is supposed to be this insane level of affection and adoration in the Top for their bottom, but they're not going out of their way to make sure they feel good??? Seems fake. In fairness to Mame, while she does fall into many a problematic trope, she also really likes bossy bottoms who advocate for their own pleasure, so there is that.

So....that's my thoughts on what to expect and what I hope to see. I hope you enjoyed.

The Boy Next World Ep 4 Thoughts

Not gonna lie folks, I’ve done jack shit this weekend and it’s been great. Meant to go to the store today but I don’t think that’s happening. So instead, Boy Next World. I got enough snacks so nothing else matters. Wonder what’s gonna happen now. I genuinely have zero idea where this show is going. Under the cut:

Me: I’m pretty sure there’s nothing between you and Ai Jin either.

Friendly reminder that I love this opening a whole lot.

I know someone who is so good-hearted it’s worrying. In fact, he is so good-hearted that I had to postpone coming out to one of my friends because we had an impromptu intervention for him on the day I planned to do it. So in case anyone is wondering, yes, there is such a thing as too nice and it makes the people who care about you terrified.

And if I had a child that said he missed me? There is no force on this earth that would stop me from going to him. Poor Phu. He is so busy managing his mother’s emotions despite literally being sick. I know she’s not a bad person but right now she’s being a bad parent. When I was sick last year with the flu, I had to beg my mother not to come take care of me. I was basically beating her back with a stick. And if I had been sick for one more day than I was, there would have been no negotiating with her. She would have come to me. I just…this is something I didn’t realize I felt so passionate about. I know Phu just has a cold but he very clearly misses his mom and she can’t even come visit for a tiny bit? Just to see her son and her son only? She has to avoid the entire fucking country? I just want to give Phu a hug and make him some chicken noodle soup.

Still no idea what the fuck I’m watching but I am greatly enjoying it. I can’t believe I like a MAME show this much. I never thought I’d see the day. Just goes to show that you should always have an open mind. Anyway can’t wait for next week.

WHEN PHU JUMPED IN CIR'S LAP??????? I WAS SCREAMING!

Phu reaction to seeing Cir's dick for the first time?? Cir guiding Phu down?? PHU ACCIDENTALLY SCRAPING THAT MAN WITH HIS TEETH?????????? Cir's pleasured expressions and his moaning??? That scene was so fucking perfect that I might dream about it for the next 7 days.

The Boy Next World Ep. 2

I really enjoyed the second ep of the Boy Next World, the first wasn't bad but I feel like it's picking up well.

Obviously the main question is what happened to Phu in Cir's world that he doesn't have any interest in going back, and why does Jin know?

Regarding the other Phu, my main thoughts are death/traumatic incident or a break-up (maybe both?). Both would explain why Cir is so desperate to be around Phu, but seems to have no desire to go back to what would presumably be his extremely upset partner. If Phu was able to or wanted to see him, it seems unlikely he wouldn't be trying to go back.

Part of the reason I'm proposing a break-up is the opening of the first episode. Cir is fighting off car thieves, but its' clearly not his car because he goes to the bus stop after (it's also white which is the colour of Phu's car) rather than driving anywhere. Perhaps there's another explanation, but why would he leave the car if it were his and why would he protect it if it weren't Phu's? Additionally, while he's at the bus stop Phu walks past and doesn't see him, he doesn't call out either. Maybe he doesn't want to see him hurt and worry him? Maybe he's avoiding him due to a falling-out?

(Also kind of unclear which world that first scene was in, did this happen to both Cir's? Why did they switch?)

I'm assuming Jin is also from the same world as Cir. He seems to know a lot more than he's letting on, he also keeps brushing off or distracting Phu when he talks about the parallel world stuff (at least initially). Also that shot in the cafeteria in ep. 2 when he's looking at Wim...

Side-thought based on that last scene, it reads to me almost like Cir liked Phu before the cup-phone thing happened but in this world he wasn't brave enough (?) to respond. Has he just been sadly pining in this world?

I fully expect to be wrong about any or all of this but it's fun to speculate! There's a lot of fun threads to pull at.

Episode 6: I'm sorry, but I love this show too much, even though a lot of people hate it and think the acting is bad. I'm a total fan.

- The police trio Tul, Phu and Jiu are really great, I love their dynamic.

- The duo of doctors Ran and May is also very appealing to me.

- The relationship between Tul and his brother is so touching, it's so sweet.

- The way police corruption is portrayed is superbly well done and realistic.

- And I really like that the series shows violence against women without trying to gaslight them or minimize their experiences.

Frankly, every episode features a violent man, and it hits home every time.

My baby Tul... she has so many daddy issues! I never thought her father would be that man, it's a dinguerie. I even died laughing because at one point, I thought it was Wisanut. And I understand why she didn't want to tell Ran, but it's really shocking: her father botched an investigation that led to Ran's mother's death. It's beyond me, I swear!

I hope at some point Ran slaps Tul, because she'd have every reason to be hurt. That scene where Ran takes a photo of herself with her mother when she was little... it was so sad, it broke my heart.

And the reconciliation between Jiu and May, frankly, was incredible. My "parents" reunited at last! And Jiu, on the verge of death, still thinking about his ex... I love that kind of drama.

Anyway, I can't wait until Saturday to see episode 7!

In light of last week's episode. What is the deal with the bit in the trailer where Cirrus switches back?

Kind of ambiguous, depending on how the drama wants to play it.

On the one hand, if you look at it through the lens of Cirrus always lying about the parallel world, it can go two ways.

By that point, he is absolutely sick with guilt for lying to Phukan, and Phu has been put in danger directly by Cir's mother (Cir is hit by a car that was supposed to hit Phu).

So it's either Cirrus pretending not to know Phukan to hopefully get him off Ratri's radar, or it's Cirrus so wrecked with guilt for lying to Phukan that he decides to "kill" Parallel-Cirrus and start over as himself.

Maybe a bit of both.

HOWEVER

One of the 2 bonus chapters has a cold and alone Cirrus collapsing at home from a bad fever, being unconscious for 3 days, and in that unconscious state, seeing a world where this boy named Phukan is weeping over him in a hospital. He keeps insisting he doesn't know Phukan, but everyone tells him they're dating.

Just as he starts getting curious, he wakes up on the floor of his apartment to Wim's phone call. Cirrus demands to know who Phukan is, and decides he wants to meet this boy and maybe try for the love he could see in Phu's eyes.

So that confirms that hospital-Cirrus is actually a parallel world Cirrus.

So... Yeah. Depending on how far the drama wants to go into the special chapters like that, they could write it as Cirrus distancing himself from Phu, Cirrus "killing" parallel-Cirrus to try to have an honest relationship with Phu, or an actual parallel Cirrus appearing in "this" world.

When rewatching parts of episode one, I came across this serious comment from Rome that has such depth to it that we might find out more about tomorrow in episode 3 (I hope).

HEAVY TBNW NOVEL SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT:

In the novel, we find out that Cir lied to Phu. He isn't from a parallel universe. The other universe never existed, because Cir made it all up. Now, I know that is bad. I know that makes Cir a liar and a stalker, but I can excuse him for it because he has a very good reason for doing what he did.

After Phu finds out Cir lied, he avoids/ignores Cir for his life. He's upset, and rightfully so! Cir on the other hand, cannot stand it. He needs Phu to hear him out, needs to explain himself. So he records an apology video for Phu to watch. (gods, the last time I hurt while reading a book is years ago, ffs reading all this hurt)

"I might have lied to you, but one thing I never lied about… is that I love you, Phukan."

Cirrus' trauma strikes deep. While it isn't mentioned or said explicitly, I think Cir might have been passively suicidal. I say this because in his apology Cir explains;

"You might not remember, but do you know you saved my life? You made me want to have my own life."

You made me want to have my own life.

"I told you before my life was empty. I was a tool in my parents' revenge. I had no freedom, no thoughts of my own […] "

Back in the present, in the hospital room before Cir wakes up, Rome says "I'm just afraid he (Cir) might not want to live anymore," and I think, if Cir had never found Phu, this would have been correct.

As someone who was passively suicidal from early teens until early twenties, I one hundred percent believe that if Cir never found Phu, he would at some point (maybe not now, maybe way later in life) have gone full robot and lived his life on automatic pilot, dissociated from himself to the point that he doesn't even know what he's doing anymore. That would not be living. That isn't living. That is enduring. I can fully imagine that if Cir had stayed the 'Ice Prince', emotionless and a robot, he would've killed himself without actually realizing that he did it.

So, is Cir stalking Phu bad and a red flag? Yes. Is Cir lying and misleading Phu bad and cowardly? Yes.

But because he never touched Phu, never hurt him, never made him uncomfortable but admired from afar, kept himself alive purely because of Phu, I can excuse him.

Cir did what he had to do to stay alive, to find himself and to break free from his mother's control. He could've gone about it differently, yes, but for a boy (because he was just a boy) who never knew love, he tried his best.

Anyway, my point is. Rome is right to fear Cir not wanting to live, because up until he met Phu, Cir didn't have anything to live for.

What’s the novel story of TBNW? I want spoilers!

Ngl, I took me a minute to realize what ‘TBNW’ meant lmao!!

I was gonna say to message me off anon, but as someone who has crippling anxiety, I know that messages can sometimes be hard to send off anon so I’ll just post the spoilers under a tag.

Spoilers for the plot of The Boy Next World, do not click if you do not want the entire storyline of the book—the series could go a different route (doubtful)—spoiled for you.

There is no timeline fuckery or alternative world, Cir is a stalker. He’s been in love with Phu since high school and has been stalking him for years, he was raised by a ‘crazy’ mother with severe mental health issues, so the idea of stalking the person you like instead of just speaking to them mades more sense to him.

Cir made up the whole scheme to fast track Phu falling in love with him, instead of properly courting him. So everything he knows about him, from his favourite foods to the lock code to his door is from stalking.

Later on, Cir’s ‘crazy’ mother gets mad when he doesn’t want to marry the girl she picked out for him and decides to try and kill Phu so that Cir will do what she says. But when she tries to run him over, Cir pushes him out of the way and gets hit by the car instead—note; the car crash at the start of the show was faked—which leaves Cir injured and, wait for it… with amnesia!!

So now Phu is trying desperately to remind his boyfriend of a life they never actually had together, based on the lies that Cir told him and he believed because he was lonely and naïve. There’s a reason Phu is meant to being overly childish to the point of disbelief, almost like he’s not mentally at the same age as his peers, because it’s easier to have the Cir character manipulate him if he’s basically a moron.

Poor Noeul getting typecasted as an idiot who gets manipulated into relationships by creepy red flag characters. Both him and Boss deserve better but will not get it with Mame unfortunately.

Anyway, Cir gets his memories back, the truth comes out, Phu decides to stay with him because clearly everything Cir did was ‘out of love’ 🙄🙄 His mom gets caught and Cir’s estranged dad and brother show up to bad mouth the ‘crazy’ mother.

Also yes, Phu is in fact Tharn’s cousin from TharnType. He just doesn’t live in the apartment complex where TharnType live yet, that doesn’t happen until he and Cir are already in a relationship. But Tong will be making an appearance in the series as Thorn for the first time since 2020, if you don’t remember, Thorn is Tharn’s eldest brother and therefore Phu’s eldest cousin. Tong was in both TharnType series, playing alongside Mew as the more levelheaded and calm brother.

i can already tell boss is gonna come for my heart in this role! The way we barely know anything about cir yet no background whatsoever, yet u feel so bad for him yet conflicted cause what he went through in the span of 24hrs! And yet he only cares about phu😭🤧and he needs to see him asap. And though he tries to tell phu that they are lovers. He shows up in places phu is telling him things no one doesn't know other than him! Even if phu doesn't know what exactly is the truth it's making him think that cir isn't maybe pulling his leg is it really a parallel world? But i do like how cir just Cleary want phu back but he doesn't want him to feel uncomfortable around him. When he realizes the approach he made in the beginning was a lot for someone to handle lol by showing up out of nowhere lol. And yet he still show painc and worry boss was so great i can't wait to see more if his emotional journey it's gonna be alot but i think he's gonna do it so well!

The Princess Victoria was a lively pub. Beautifully decorated, highly renowned food and a lovely landlord made it a popular choice with the locals. Unfortunately, it was also popular with the criminal underground of London, which was sometimes very bad for business. But Mickey paid the bills, and the rent, and that was enough to keep Bobby happy. It’s not that the customers were scared off by the pubs criminal customer base, but rather that the Princess Victoria was to be closed whenever Mickey says, at the drop of a hat.

Like it is right now.

“Feel free to talk.” Spoke the man that Coach and Eleanor were here to meet.

Raymond Smith. Consigliere to Micheal Pearson, his right hand man, known for his cunning ruthlessness, calculated manner and commitment to getting the job done. Always immaculately dressed, ever the image of a gentleman. But with that image comes an aura of danger, that prickly feeling at the back of your neck that makes everyone feel just a little bit uncomfortable.

He was attractive, Eleanor couldn’t deny that.

“I gather that you’re the consigliere of the outfit that my boys were stupid enough to fuck around with.” Coach said, addressing Raymond. “On that note, I’d like to extend my apologies on their behalf. My boys, they’re naïve, they’ve had hard lives and they’re just starting to come good, but they’re my lads, my responsibility. So it’s me that should be accountable for their actions. Now I can return your goods, but I can’t return the inconvenience, the time-“

“The headache.” Eleanor butted in, nodding solemnly.

“The fucking headache.” Coach confirmed. “And so I offer you my loyalty, my word, my time, until that debt it settled. I’ll make amends, but just leave my lads alone.”

Raymond took a deep breath in, before speaking. “First of all, I’m gonna need to know how your lads got the information about where our farm was sited, ‘cause that’s not common knowledge. Once we’ve overcome that little challenge, then we can talk. Secondly, I do not want you bringing company like that,” he said raising a finger towards Eleanor and her revealing outfit, “around here again. We, and this pub, have an image to uphold.”

“Believe me, I do not want to be dressed like a hooker any more than you want to see me like this. But unfortunately, it comes part and parcel with a little present we have for you Raymundo.” Eleanor grinned. Raymond raised his eyebrows at the cheek but stayed silent, allowing his curiosity to get the better of him.

The three of them headed outside, Eleanor tossing Coach the keys to her beat up Toyota Carolla. Coach opened up the boot to reveal Phuc squirming in the boot of the car, wrists and ankles tied with duct tape covering his mouth.

“Ta-da!” Eleanor said sarcastically as all three looked down on Phuc.

“His names Phuc, but its spelt with a Ph so its sounds like fu-uck.” Explained Coach.

Ray looked at Coach with a slack jaw. “So its Phu-uc?” he asked.

“What? Yeah yeah, something like that. Anyway, he’s the kid that gave us the skunk farm job. D’you know him?” said Coach.

“Yeah we’ve met before haven’t we Phu-uc… Phuc?” Ray said leaning in.

“That’s the one.” Coach quipped.

“Phu-uc?”

“Phu-uc.” Eleanor confirmed. Ray gestured at Coach to remove the tape off the Chinese mans mouth.

Coach muttered, “Don’t do anything stupid now son, right?”

Phuc gasped as the tape was removed, trying to inhale as much air as he could.

“How did you know the location?” Ray asked.

“I need my inhaler.” Phuc gasped.

“Yeah in a minute.” Ray continued. “I need to tell you how knew the location of our farm.” Eleanor watched, impressed at Rays cool, calm manner -  a huge difference to the way these mobsters usually tried to get information out of people. It was refreshing, she thought, and hot. She mentally scolded herself as the second thought crossed her mind, reminding herself that Raymond Smith was not the sort of man you could have those thoughts about.

“I’ve been trailing you for months. Dry Eye was given the address. I can’t breathe! I need it, please.” Phuc panted.

“All right Phuc calm the fu-uck down.” Coach said as he grabbed Phuc and pulled him out of the boot. Eleanor snorted at that little joke which earned her a disappointed look from Raymond.

Phuc stood from the boot, stumbling around before a few sharp slaps to the face from Coach calmed him down. He fell forward again, and Ray caught him and righted him. “Sort him out.” He muttered.

Coach leant down and cut the tape off of Phuc’s ankles, before checking in him.

“You alright? Come on, where’s your inhaler?” Coach asked. “Look at me.” Another sharp slap to the face. “Where’s your inhaler?”

“There.” Phuc answered, looking down at his right jacket pocket.

“Right, here, take a blim.” Phuc took a deep breath on the inhaler, before pushing through Ray and Coach and making a break for it. He ran around the corner of the Princess Victoria, Ray, Coach and Eleanor following close after, Eleanor chasing as well as she should given the too tall heels strapped to her feet. Phuc jumped a wall, which, very unfortunately, was actually a bridge over train tracks. He fell to the floor, straight in front of an incoming train. Eleanor, Coach and Ray all leaned over the bridge as the train hit him.

And that was the end of poor Phuc.

Eleanor broke the stunned silence with a shake of the head, “They always do something stupid.”

“Yeah they do.” Ray agreed. “Right, shall we talk business?”

Coach and Eleanor followed Ray back towards the Princess Victoria – with Eleanor stopping to collect a duffel bag from her car, and locking the boot as she left. This was London after all.

“Bunny,” Ray spoke addressing the tall, quiet man that had been stood at the door, “There’s a little mess on the train tracks that you and Dave could do with sorting. I’ll give you the number for Network Rail and the Cleaners.”

Bunny nodded a “Yes Boss.” before reaching into his jacket pocket and pulling out a phone.

Ray stopped Eleanor as she walked into the pub.

“I’m assuming you have a change of clothes.” He spoke lowly.

Eleanor gestured to the duffel bag on her shoulder, “Give me five minutes and a bathroom.” She smiled.

“Past the bar, first door on your left.” Ray said with a glance down at his watch.

“Coach, pint of Madri and a pack of salt and vinegar Walkers please.” She said with a wink, heading off towards the bathrooms.

Ray had to admit, when he had taken the meeting with the people who had stolen his boss’ bush, he was expecting it to get messy. He was expecting some young dumb boys, too proud to admit they did wrong, and too stubborn to come to any sort of agreement. He was expecting having to use a bit more persuasion, the violent kind.

What he wasn’t expecting was a small Irish man dressed head to toe in a plaid tracksuit and a hooker. He was not expecting them to practically beg him to not interfere with the dumb boys (he was right about one thing he supposes, it’s always dumb boys who do stuff like this). He was not expecting them to have bought the source of the leak, Phuc, directly to him. He was also not expecting Phuc to jump onto an active rail line and die, but that was somehow the least surprising thing to happen. It was bound to get a little bit messy after all.

What he certainly wasn’t expecting was to be drawn to the hooker who accompanied Coach. He wasn’t expecting to notice the way she limped slightly after rolling her ankle in those heels that were far to tall, proving that she was not in fact a real hooker. Why she was dressed like one Ray has no idea, but he supposes the answer to that question will come with time. He wasn’t expecting to be drawn to her quick wit and casual charm. He wasn’t expecting to come out of this meeting wanting to know everything about a woman whom he’d met for 10 minutes.

He certainly wasn’t expecting her to look that good when she left the bathroom. Gone was the over the top hair and makeup, gone was the top that barely covered her tits and the skirt that barely covered her arse. Gone were the too tall heels.

In it’s place was a simple, yet elegant makeup look and sleek pony tail. She wore a one shouldered black dress, with some heeled boots (in a heel height she could actually walk in) and she looked gorgeous. Unbelievably gorgeous.

Ray checked his watch, four and half minutes. Impressive.

Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs. Organized by which ones (in each category) I’m enjoying most.

Ongoing Series - Thai

La Pluie (Sat iQIYI) ep 4 of 10 - yes it jumped to the top of the standings, the kiss was THAT good, best of the year so far. So soft and yet so sweet and yearning and with a proper chemistry - body, breath, everything. Also... there was plot happening this ep, but who cares about that? Some additional thoughts, now my brain has rebooted from that kiss. I do suspect Pat of still being a player: he is awful smooth, and he may want revenge for being jacked along for 2 years (I would). Ep 4 is early for a kiss like that, which means pacing-wise we may be in for a separation/break up around ep 8. 

Step By Step (Thai Tues WeTV & Gaga) ep 5 of 10 (MDL still says 12, but Gaga still says 10) - Pat, dear, your gay is squirting all over our screens. Meanwhile… That is the smallest presidential suite bed I’ve ever seen. Lucky for us of course. And lucky for Jeng. Me with the side dishes = UH OH. 

Our Skyy 2 (My School President) eps 9-10 - Alt reality where Tinn is in charge of the music club and Gun is the school president with the crush. Basically, it’s an excuse for them to play each others’ parts (which just highlighted how well they were cast, originally). Ultimately, Gemini is a better piner, and Fourth is a better tsundere. Although the reversed “holding it over his head” was v funny & Fourth IS a decent seme. (I also realized what I like so much about Fourth, like Saint he’s one of those rare full body actors.) Sound was a great uke and I loved how they changed his makeup for the role (did you notice?). TiwPor were as adorably ridiculous as ever. I liked the minor baby pairing for Aun, too. Still my NO SIGNING holds (although there was lots of dancing to counterbalance). In the end, all this really did was make me wanna rewatch the original. Which is not necessarily a bad thing. FYI The MV was a parody of HCTM, BB, 1k*. 8/10 

A Boss and a Babe (Fri YouTube) ep 12fin - It was a cute sappy ending for a cute-ish sappy-ish show. I cannot abide that the mom who condoned the rape of her daughter got forgiven. No. Stop it GMMTV. Review below. 

The Promise (Thai Weds YT & WeTV) ep 9 of 10 - I'm in trouble when I'm rooting for everybody BUT the main couple. I guess Nan doesn’t have a NO SINGING policy. Also I guess Nan was waiting for Phu all along? This show. ALSO could we not have just ended it here? 

Past-senger (Thai Weds Gaga) ep 11 of 12 eps - I don’t understand. What? Where did all these new characters come from? Do we care about the hets? Not even slightly. What is anyone doing? What’s going on? do I care abotu anyone anymore? No. Please make it stop. 

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Our Dining Table AKA Bokura no Shokutaku (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 7 of 10 - OMG so adorable, so repressed, so reserved, so soft, so awkward, so special. Heart melting. Also. Hungry. The WAY Minoru looks at Yutaka when he’s eating (now that he knows the history). The way we got to see the exact moment that Minoru realizes he is in love. Perfection. 

Star Struck (Korea iQIYI & Gaga) ep 1-2 of 8 - Zuho (Kpop SF9 - noted good egg) opposite rookie actor Kim In Sung (the one with the crush). icky is being weird about it but it looks like Gaga also picked it up? Depends on your territory I suppose. Anygay: Friends since childhood, jock/nerd, puppy/cat and I sense bi-himbo confusion and pining introvert gay. There’s family strife plus class issues and it has some interesting things to say already about the nature of friendship, romance, and jealousy. I like it, weirdly reminds me of something that might have come out of China. Not early CBL, but some of the later stuff that was censored but hearkened to Addicted. This has the feel of what China could have made now (were things politically different). Because of this feel, I’m not confident in this being an HEA or even a true BL but it is interesting enough for me to bump it way up the ranks. 

Happy Merry Ending (Korea Thurs Gaga) eps 7-8fin - I get why SJ pushed JH away, but I kinda agree that SJ is too much work. Abused or not, I wouldn’t put in the damn effort - so I guess I’m glad SJ took a year off to figure his shizz out? Far be it from me to agree with a year break in a Kdrama, tho. I didn’t even mind that they were separated most of these 2 eps: it was nice to see a Seme told no, who actually backed off and did as he was told. Plus the running of the gays (how Japan of you SK). I’m assuming that this was the final episode and that Viki thinking that there are 2 more is bonkers? Because this felt like a finale. For me this one had a stronger finish than any other aspect of the show (odd when the couple spent the bulk of it apart). Oh! And someone give Shin Myung Sung (the surfer bestie) his own damn BL, m’kay? Review below.

Love Mate (Korea Thurs Viki) eps 5-6 of 8 - Longest elevator ride in the world. Honorifics discussion! My favorite! And, “there is only one bed but they slept together on the floor anyway” trope. A BL staple. Also the tie/lanyard grab. Another fav. Still pushy puppy stalker remains creepy manipulative obsessive warped hotness. Basically KBL version of trash and… I’m into it. We all got our kinks, I guess. 

Vian the series (Vietnam YouTube ) - Such a cat. I’m reminded of Milk. It’s cute. They cute. I like it.

Naked Dinner AKA Zenra Meshi (Japan Fri Gaga) ep 6 of 12 - So is the nude dining meant to be some kind of weird allegory for repressed gayness?

Love Syndrome finished its run on WeTV (I stopped at ep 2) - anyone wanna weight in with thoughts on the ending and whether I should binge or not? I do love Lee Long Shi.

Happy Merry Ending - Stars Lee Dong Won (KNK) as an ex-idol turned wedding singer with an abusive ex and a panic disorder + the sunshine pianist who falls in love with him. Timid tsundere & sweetheart gay is an interesting match. They’re gentle together, almost kindly and there is a calm ache to their pairing. However, it lost its way as a BL, being more about the main character’s struggle than the romance. It had a strong finish but ultimately the premise & characters meant this was never going to be one of my favorites. 8/10  

A Boss and a Babe - With an inconsistent narrative and self-sabotaging characters this was not the Thai BL office romance I was hoping for. I spent most if it feeling manipulated without good reason and sorry for ForceBook. They did their best with a shoddy script (AGAIN!) and none of its flaws were their fault. This show was all over the place and so am I about it. It’s better than Enchanté but that’s not really saying much. 7/10 I guess

Having read bits of your post on To Be Continued, I'm curious about your thoughts on To Be Continued and The Promise even though I am not watching the former and dropped the latter.

Where would you say they rank on The Alan Scale?

I ain't that mad at To Be Continued

Therefore, it's not on the Alan scale (yet! We still have one more episode so shit could change) because the show is kinda basic, but not in a bad way. It's checking off the BL boxes, but, oddly enough, it called out itself in this past episode for doing that.

It's not City of Stars level of awareness, but both leads acknowledged the reason they separated for ten years was pointless. They both apologized for the hurt they caused, then they chilled on the couch and cracked jokes. It was rushed as many of us assumed it would be, but it happened.

In the beginning, I did not like Achi. I thought he was disrespectful to Ji and pushy. Then by episode three, I was completely on Achi's side while being livid at Ji for being distant.

But I've never been upset at Gumbie. He is perfect. He is everything. He is love personified. He resides in my heart. Forever.

Then, once both men stated that they should have actually talked to each other after they had sex as teenagers, I just wasn't as pissed at either of them as I had been for the six previous episodes.

I'm still upset. Let me not gloss over that because I had to deal with hating them for various reasons most of the series, but just like Sun for 7 Days Before Valentine, I see the growth. They aren't the same raggedy bitches that walked into the series.

Unlike this motherfucker.

Phu was exactly who he was at the beginning of The Promise. Not one thing changed about him. He would still run away from the problems HE CAUSED instead of answering for any of the bullshit he pulled.

Nan had already forgiven Phu before Phu even came back into his life. Hell, Nan had forgiven Phu AS PHU WAS WALKING AWAY! Yet we still had to witness Phu be the victim.

There is only one show for me that has really gotten the "I left him because I love him" right and that's our Lord and Savior known as Our Dating Sim.

And it's because none of these other shows know how to balance the reason for leaving with the anger of being left. THAT'S IMPORTANT!

The Promise didn't allow Nan to be angry AND for Phu to acknowledge his part in that anger. Phu just kept crying. How can a relationship happen when Nan could never trust that Phu wouldn't run away again since Phu never saw what he did as wrong?

To Be Continued at least acknowledged that both the reason for Achi leaving and Ji being upset were insignificant. It's not great, but it's the basic amount needed to start fresh because it makes things equal. No one is left standing on high ground thinking his actions were right and the other guy's were wrong.

So, yeah, basic. Bare minimum. But it checked the boxes.

And it also had Poppy's fine ass, so . . .

Me last night when I stayed up until *coughing fit* watching Master Chef season 2.

The cup phones being a constant thing for them is so precious and adorable and genuinely one of the sweetest little couple things I’ve seen a BL couple do. It’s so very them. It’s impractical but it works and it’s a literal line that connects them. So simple yet effective. Affective? Effective, yeah? (Good for nothing english degree)
