Alice Boughton (1866 – 1943) was an early 20th-century American photographer who was also active in Feminist and Socialist causes using photography as a form of personal expression. Boughton was a prominent member of the New Woman movement that emerged in the late 19th century. New Woman referred to independent women seeking changes to the status-quo that has been set by the patriarchy. They also sought independence via physical changes to their clothing and activities, such as playing sports previously considered inappropriate for women.

Boughton studied at the Pratt School of Art and Design in the 1880s, and opened her own portrait studio on East 23rd Street in New York in 1890. During her time, she became one of the most distinguished portrait photographers in New York.

Her platinum print on tissue entitled “Summer” has a soft and grainy texture with a sense of thick and hot air that we can almost feel. “Dawn” is a photogravure, which was published in the 1909 issue of Camera Work, Alfred Stieglitz's influential quarterly journal dedicated to establishing photography as a fine art. Boughton's photogravure images were highly regarded for their painterly qualities and artistic ambition. (From Pratt Institute’s website)

“Dawn” is a daring image of a female nude with her back to us, standing in a shallow pool of water as she faces a larger body of water. She holds a ball as if to throw it, but there is no one visible in the landscape to catch it.

Photography as Art

As I process shots from my trips, I invariably come across images that just do not pop. I saw something that caused me to press the shutter button but they just seem uninspired. 

I recently watched a Creative Live presentation with Photographer Art Wolfe called “Photography as Art”. Art encourages people to look at their images differently and helps us to see the potential that a different perspective can bring to our creations.

With this in mind, I spent a little time trying to craft an image from a tattoo parlour building facade taken in Toulon, France. “Ink Your Meat”, captured my attention and I knew I wanted to add this image to my collection. I used a variety of Photoshop filters to posterize and highlight the most important areas while minimising parts that did not add to the overall image. I was really excited by the result.

I created this series using the same technique applied to a variety of images that were just OK. Seeing the impact that this technique over a series of images makes it feel like I have created a style. It is also very forgiving if used on images where the focus is a little soft for conventional processing. I like it so much I will be using it again.

Continuity and change, although opposites, both are equally important in business and personal growth. Continuity in business is vital in such things as quality and professionalism. If either of these begin to decline due to lack of motivation, caring or bad management of money and time your customers will note this and take thier business elsewhere.
