Eleven days after National Guard troops fired into a crowd of unarmed anti-war protesters at Kent State University in Ohio, local and state police in Mississippi opened fire on a group of students at Jackson State College in Jackson. In a 30-second barrage of gunfire, police fired 150 rounds into the crowd, killing two Black students and injuring dozens more.
On the evening of May 14, students were gathered on Lynch Street, a road connecting the predominately Black college campus to the more affluent white neighborhood in Jackson. Police reports allege that the students had been throwing rocks and bottles at passing white motorists; students and white motorists had a tense relationship because the white motorists would yell racial slurs and taunt the students as they passed. Later that evening, a person not believed to be a student set fire to a dump truck. Firemen arriving to respond to the blaze called police, claiming to need protection from the gathering students.
When one glass bottle was allegedly thrown into the crowd of police shortly after midnight, officers responded by indiscriminately opening fire on the crowd of students and riddling a women’s dorm with bullets. Phillip Gibbs, 21, and James Green, 17, were killed. Officers later claimed a sniper in the women's dorm had shot at them first. The President's Commission on Campus Unrest later called the shootings an “unreasonable, unjustified overreaction,” but ultimately no one was charged. A local grand jury blamed the students, arguing that people who engage in civil disobedience must accept the risk of injury or death by law enforcement.
In 1974, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the officers had overreacted but they could not be held liable for the two deaths that resulted. In 1982, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear the case.

On this day, 15 May 1970, police opened fire just past midnight on a small group of Black students protesting at Jackson State College, Mississippi, killing two, including a bystander, and wounding 12. This was just 10 days after the much more widely known killings of white students at Kent State. Protests by Jackson State students had been held against the bombing of Vietnam and Cambodia, against the killings at Kent State, and again on this evening in response to rumours of a racist murder. Those killed were Phillip Lafayette Gibbs, 21 (left), father of an 18-month-old baby, and James Earl Green, a 17 year old grocery store worker who just happened to be walking home after his shift. Disney 100 ✨🏰🤍
Tumblr media
Wishing you all a happy new year and to Disney, a belated 100th anniversary! 🎉
To celebrate Disney’s century milestone, I created an illustration based on 100 of Disney’s most known and loved characters from their respective movies/ series. I’ve included all the ones I’ve known and feel are generally popular but I’m sorry if your personal favourites aren’t here.
This has been in the works for almost four months now but due to many delays I couldn’t finish it on time. So here it finally is!
Out of all these range characters, the hardest to draw was the Cars. I’m not used to drawing cars so I’m not generally good at them (yet). Some of these may look simple and easy to draw but trust me, they’re not 😂.
With drawing the characters and the background, I like to be accurate with the respective style it’s drawn/ animated in and the colours too. But also I wanted to also simplify the 3D ones and add a little depth using shadow to the 2D ones. For example some of these films would have a desaturated grainy effect to it and I wanted to keep that. But finally after months of working on it, it’s completed and I’m happy with it! ✨.
Please, please do check it out on Instagram too:
instagram
If this link doesn't work, my username is @/artofzafrasarfraz - it's where I put all my drawings up on. Please do share on stories and comment. Much appreciated 🥹🫶🏼🤍

This Might Be The First Newborn Great White Shark Ever Recorded
The 5-foot great white was filmed off the coast of California covered in a strange, milky substance that could be uterine fluid.
— By Jason Bittel | January 29, 2024 | Photographs: By Carlos Gauna
Tumblr media
Is this first-ever recorded sighting of a newborn great white shark? A milky white film—which scientists suggest could be a sort of uterine "milk"—flaked off the young shark's tail as it swam off the coast of Santa Barbara, California. Photographs By Carlos Gauna
For as much time and money as people have spent studying and filming great white sharks, no one has ever witnessed one being born. But new footage out of California might be the next best thing.
On July 9, 2023, filmmaker Carlos Gauna and organismal biologist Phillip Sternes were following sharks with a drone off the coast of Santa Barbara. They’d already captured footage of a few larger great whites, but then something completely unexpected drifted up out of the murk.
“Toward the end of the day this peculiar-looking white shark appeared, and we were both super excited,” says Sternes, a Ph.D. student at the University of California, Riverside.
youtube
At just under five feet long with chubby, rounded fins, the duo knew they were looking at a very young great white. (For comparison, adult great whites can stretch up to 21 feet long.) But as the drone zoomed in, it caught something never seen before—a milky white film that appeared to flake off the young shark’s tail as it swam.
While no one can say for sure what the white material is, Sternes suggests it may be a sort of uterine “milk” used to nourish newborn sharks in the womb. Another possibility is that the shark has a skin condition that has never been described before.
“Both scenarios are highly significant,” says Sternes, who together with Gauna co-authored a study announcing the findings today in the journal Environmental Biology of Fishes.
“This is extremely rare. White shark birthing locations have remained extremely elusive for the scientific community,” Sternes tells National Geographic in an email. “We think we have a piece to the puzzle now. If this is a birthing location, conservation aspects must be considered.”
‘A Really Unique Observation’
To understand just how rare a sighting of a newborn great shark is, you need to first understand that we know surprisingly little about how the world’s largest predatory shark reproduces.
“I think it’s incredible,” says Greg Skomal, a shark biologist with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries who was familiar with the footage but not involved with the new study. “People don't realize that some of the most basic questions about white shark reproduction are unanswered.”
Skomal cautioned against making any major conclusions based on the footage, however.
“It’s like any observation. You only have so much information, right? You have the imagery. You got the date, the time, the location. And the rest is speculation,” says Skomal, who is also author of Chasing Shadows: My Life Tracking the Great White Shark.
That said, Skomal did acknowledge that the facts presented would seem to point toward the shark being a newborn.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Scientists know surprisingly little about the reproduction of great white sharks—so the discovery of a birthing site would go a long way to advancing our understanding of these animals. Photographs By Carlos Gauna
For instance, the area where it was spotted has been thought to be a great white nursery, as first-year sharks have been documented there before. And Skomal says the shark’s coloration, shape, size, as well as the appearance of the milky white fluid all suggest it’s extremely young.
“That’s led researchers to think it’s a newborn white shark, and it probably is,” says Skomal. “The question is, when was it born? Is it hours, or days [old]? We don’t know that.”
What This Means For Research
National Geographic Explorer Gibbs Kuguru, a scientist who studies the DNA of sharks, says that the sighting is “a game-changer”—particularly if the white fluid is what researchers suspect it is.
“The fact that we have a shark in the process of shedding its “amniotic fluid” is compelling evidence that we're looking at a newborn, which is critical because it strongly suggests the shark hasn’t strayed far from its birth site,” he says. “Also, considering the decades of research about finding the elusive mating and birthing locations of Great Whites, stumbling upon a potential pupping ground like this is nothing short of radical.”
Because ocean animals spend the majority of their lives below the water’s surface, sometimes discoveries must wait until scientists happen to be in the right place at the right time. That was certainly the case when scientists witnessed a humpback giving birth for the first time in March 2021.
“We very rarely ever get to see a live newborn white shark, which could have been born within hours,” says Skomal. “And if that’s the case, this is a really unique observation.”
Great white sharks are listed as vulnerable to extinction by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, with the overall population thought to be decreasing. Learning more about where they start their lives would be critical information for scientists seeking to safeguard the future of the species.
As for Sternes, he says, “I look forward to receiving feedback from the scientific community.”

The Jackson State Killings took place at Jackson State College (May 15, 1970) in Jackson, Mississippi. Around midnight on May 14, city and state police confronted a group of students and opened fire on them, killing two students and injuring twelve. The Jackson State Killings occurred eleven days after the more widely publicized Kent State University Shootings.
A group of African American high school and college students gathered just off campus and began rioting in response to a false rumor that Fayette, Mississippi mayor Charles Evers and his wife, Nannie Evers, were assassinated. Several white motorists called Jackson Police Department to complain about the African-American rioters throwing rocks at them as they drove by the campus on Lynch Street. The young protesters started fires and overturned a dump truck.
Seventy-five policeman and Mississippi State Police officers arrived to control the crowd. At around 12:05 a.m., the police opened fire on the crowd, and twenty-one-year-old Phillip Lafayette Gibbs and seventeen-year-old James Earl Green were killed. Gibbs was a junior pre-law major at Jackson State and father of an eighteen-month-old son; Green was a senior at Jim Hill High School in Jackson.
Some students said the police issued a warning that they would shoot unless the crowd dispersed. Others contended that the police opened fire on the crowd and on Alexander West Hall. Police claimed they shot at the dormitory because they spotted a powder flare on the third floor of the building and thus fired on the dormitory in self-defense.
The President’s Commission on Campus Unrest was created by President Richard Nixon to investigate both shootings. The commission held its first meeting on June 25, 1970 in DC and conducted public hearings in Jackson, Kent, and Los Angeles for thirteen days. The administration, faculty, staff, and students, along with police and National Guard officials testified. The commission criticized both police in Jackson and National Guard commanders in Ohio, no arrests were made.
The Gibbs-Green Plaza was constructed Alexander West Hall Center. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Has Hamilton ever been shot during the revolutionary war?
Not that any record survives of. Hamilton seemed pretty good at haphazardly dodging injuries or inevitable death. A few quotes to pick from secondary sources, Hamilton at Germantown;
Likewise mounted and in the forefront as usual, Hamilton also had a number of close calls, but escaped injury in the hard-fought battle.
Alexander Hamilton's Revolution: His Vital Role as Washington's Chief of Staff, by Phillip Thomas Tucker
Hamilton at Yorktown;
As additional elated Americans reached the parapet and began to open fire after having quickly loaded muskets that had been unloaded during the attack, the feisty defenders resisted for some time. Since he was in the charge’s forefront and the first inside, Hamilton was most fortunate to have escaped injury from not only the initial volley fired by the enemy at close range, but also the flurry of furious bayonet thrusts.
Alexander Hamilton and the Battle of Yorktown, October 1781: The Winning of American Independence, by Phillip Thomas Tucker
But again, these are secondary sources. Hamilton did have a tendency to be reckless through battle, and it's an honest shock he even managed to survive it. He marched straight into line of fire as Mulligan recalls, and at Yorktown too. I have recently heard of this story circling around where Caleb Gibbs supposedly saved Hamilton from a gunshot at Yorktown, [x] or Hamilton had accidentally shot him at the attack of Redoubt 10. [x] But I can't find any convincing evidence of this claim outside of Gibbs's ankle injury, that's cause isn't explained. [x] Although Tucker writes that Jeremiah Olney had allegedly saved Hamilton when the battle had become worse;
Now a completely exposed target atop the parapet, Captain Olney simultaneously dodged bayonet thrusts from half a dozen British soldiers. Fortunately, Hessian and British soldiers had no time to reload their Brown Bess muskets after unleashing their initial volley—a factor that almost certainly saved both Olney and Hamilton from injury or death.

PANSEXUAL ⋆    HIM/HER ⋆ THIRTY - EIGHT ⋆ CAFE OWNER
Adam lived a quite wealthy life in France, Paris. But he wanted to have his own place with his fiancé Agatha. All things went pretty well, they were high school sweethearts that recently got engaged. Adam never thought that deciding to leave France would turn in such a nightmare. Agatha didn’t find a job and she started drinking. Not too long after the abuse started and Adam was locked up and starved. When he managed to find help Agatha was put into jail. Adam didn’t dare to leave the house anymore and had to be cared for by his mother.  Years passed and Adam finally managed to leave his apartment. He could start anew. And he did this with the support of his family by creating a role play café where people are dressed as prince and princesses, maids and butlers to serve you. It was named the Enchanted Rose Café.
It was then when a friendship blossomed into something more when he met Mary Gibbs. She is the love of his life and he cannot wait to start and get a family with her. She deserves everything this world has to offer.
When Adam got poisoned Adam was filled with a rage he could hardly suppress - a grumpiness that wouldn’t go away. When Mary eventually was hospitalized with the same poisoning signs as him, he finally blew up - he then realized he needed professional help and went into anger management courses.

The Sensations - Everyday Is Just A Holiday / Tommy McCook & The Supersonics - Rock Away
Tumblr media
A The Sensations - Everyday Is Just A Holiday b/w B Tommy Mccook & The Supersonics - Rock Away The sweltering rocksteady classic Every Day Is A Holiday, with the soulful Bobby Davis as lead vocalist, stands out as one of The Sensations' top hits for the Treasure Isle label. Initially released in 1969 in Jamaica and the UK by Treasure Isle and Trojan Records respectively, it featured Winston Wright's organ cut to Joya Landis' Moonlight Lover on the other side. In this reissue, the pairing of The Sensations’ Every Day Is Just A Holiday with Tommy McCook & The Supersonics’ Rock Away is more fitting, as it presents the straight instrumental version of the riddim. This enchanting riddim was subsequently revived by influential Jamaican producers such as Coxsone Dodd, Bunny "Striker" Lee, Joe Gibbs, and Phillip "Fatis" Burrell. Following the Skatalites' breakup in 1965, where Tommy McCook served as the bandleader, he received a proposal from producer Arthur 'Duke' Reid to assume the role of musical director for his labels, which he accepted. Subsequently, he formed a new band called Tommy McCook & The Supersonics. They became known for their distinctive sound, prominently featured in various Treasure Isle recordings from the rocksteady period. One of the notable recordings is Rock Away, which once more illustrates that Tommy's saxophone sound is rarely harsh, with notes flowing smoothly. Read the full article
