« Although I am, today, much more moved by sober writers (in terms of writing style), I still feel the greatest admiration (and a particular tenderness) for the others, the luxuriant ones, the generous, the feverish, the monsters. It's as though they were afraid of missing a single thing. They want to embrace the whole world, imprison it in a net they are weaving as they go, urgently, as if they had to erect a cathedral before nightfall, without anyone's help, at the risk of having the entire building fall in on them. Only the sheer size of the walls and the mass of material used can maintain the improbable balance and transform ugliness into beauty. These writers are saints. Sober writers are angels. »

Betty Blue (1986). A lackadaisical handyman and aspiring novelist tries to support his younger girlfriend as she slowly succumbs to madness.
While this film is just soaked in masculine fantasy, I still enjoyed the first half as a depiction of a manic romance, particularly Béatrice Dalle's magnetic performance as the titular Betty, but good lord, if it doesn't let itself down in the final act where it pivots from sexist to outright misogynistic. The end of Betty's arc left me pretty furious, and I feel would likely colour any repeat viewing of it. Just - - yeah. Not Good. 4/10.

37°2 le matin
“The rose in your eyes is your deepest love for me.
- Jean Jacques Beineix (1946-2022)
🎯 《I turned my back to her. I felt a slight burning on the back of my neck.
“Listen to me,” I went on.
“I never was much for fucking around, I never got much out of it. I know that everybody else does it; but it’s no fun if you just do like everybody else. To tell you the truth, it bores me, It does you good to live according to your ideas, to not betray yourself, not cop out at the last minute just because some girl has a nice ass, or someone offers you a huge check, or because the path of least resistance runs by your front door. It does you good to hang tough. It’s good for the soul.”
I turned around to tell her the Big Secret;
“Over Dispersal, I choose Concentration. I have one life—the only thing I’m interested in is making it shine.”》

Review of Without counting | Warning, minefield
With an almost “Nothombesque” regularity, Philippe Djian concocts very digestible novels almost every year, without however sinking into lightness. Updated at 6:00 p.m. Known for dissecting often explosive couple relationships, he borrows, with Without countingrefreshing paths for the author, but tortuous for his characters. In the center of the chessboard, Nathan, editor in a daily newspaper…

Philippe Djian - Sans compter
