« Although I am, today, much more moved by sober writers (in terms of writing style), I still feel the greatest admiration (and a particular tenderness) for the others, the luxuriant ones, the generous, the feverish, the monsters. It's as though they were afraid of missing a single thing. They want to embrace the whole world, imprison it in a net they are weaving as they go, urgently, as if they had to erect a cathedral before nightfall, without anyone's help, at the risk of having the entire building fall in on them. Only the sheer size of the walls and the mass of material used can maintain the improbable balance and transform ugliness into beauty. These writers are saints. Sober writers are angels. »

Betty Blue (1986). A lackadaisical handyman and aspiring novelist tries to support his younger girlfriend as she slowly succumbs to madness.
While this film is just soaked in masculine fantasy, I still enjoyed the first half as a depiction of a manic romance, particularly Béatrice Dalle's magnetic performance as the titular Betty, but good lord, if it doesn't let itself down in the final act where it pivots from sexist to outright misogynistic. The end of Betty's arc left me pretty furious, and I feel would likely colour any repeat viewing of it. Just - - yeah. Not Good. 4/10.

Betty Blue - Director’s Cut
Tumblr media
Please take this first bit with a spoonful of sugar because I really like the movie, especially the director’s cut, but both versions have a problem (well, two).
The rant
It has to be noted that along with the axiom that men generally don’t understand women, director Jean-Jacques Beineix and/or novelist Philippe Djian willfully misunderstand women for the sake of drama.
I say this because—one of the most googled questions/debates and my largest complaint—when they wanted to give Betty a mental illness/disability, rather than research and select one like, you know, writers, they made one up with the symptoms that would suit their needs. It’s at least lazy, it’s at most ableist and male chauvinistic.
The review
My biggest problem with the theatrical release is that Betty/Zorg’s relationship is lopsided. Apart from sex, Zorg doesn’t put in nearly the effort of Betty until the pregnancy. I think we’re supposed to count as good things all the slapping around of Betty he does when she has episodes. I don’t care if was the 80s, that’s not how this works. That’s not how any of this works.
In the director’s cut, Zorg is basically all-in, maybe even more than to man-scale. It was a real shift and relief for me.
It’s hard to go into what’s new without spoilers, but there are new storylines, lots of new moments, and things are rounded out.
Idk how you feel about the ending. Zorg says essentially “we belong together forever” and then the thing happens. Well, the thing still happens but a little more happens, too. Nothing drastic that would make it a poetic ending, maybe the opposite. Fuck, I just think the ending is ridiculous. Again with the bad writing in an otherwise good movie.
The wrap-up
If you read this review you, you may be entitled to financial compensation.

7,5/10

Review of Without counting | Warning, minefield
With an almost “Nothombesque” regularity, Philippe Djian concocts very digestible novels almost every year, without however sinking into lightness. Updated at 6:00 p.m. Known for dissecting often explosive couple relationships, he borrows, with Without countingrefreshing paths for the author, but tortuous for his characters. In the center of the chessboard, Nathan, editor in a daily newspaper…

Philippe Djian - Sans compter
