Im from Germany and one of my favourite things is that the german voice of Ewan McGregor's Obi Wan Kenobi and Orlando Bloom's Legolas are voiced by one and the same guy. His name is Philipp Moog.

Obliques and Atmospheric are very happy to present their new album “Golden Apples of the Sun”. It is the result of close cooperation between Suzanne Ciani and Jonathan Fitoussi. The American electronic music pioneer has joined the French composer to sign a four-hand album around mythical synthesizers like Buchla, Moog and Ems… Mainly recorded in California, facing the Pacific Ocean, the white sound of synthesizers mixes constantly with the sound of the waves and wind. The music generated is directly blended with the surrounding elements of nature. It is both organic and live, hypnotic and rhythmical, powerful and dreamlike. I haven’t posted a new scene of the German dub in ages. 😅 But here we go again.

Some already know this part of the scene from my post here but how could I not include it in my German vs English dub comparison?

For me this is -hands down- the best vocally scene of Quackerjack in the German dub. Mostly because that pitch drop comes so unexpected that even when I'd rewatched it my reaction was kinda like this:

Seriously, the German dub doesn’t fuck around in Quackerjack’s debut episode to show that this guy is nuts and ready to kill.

I also love how they used Knalltüte for doofus. Knalltüte describes a small bag out of paper or plastic which is blown up and ready to get slapped for a good bang. This could be a small innuendo on what Quackerjack would love to do to Whiffleboy but I’m not sure if it’s intentional since it’s also a low-key insult which is more appropiate for a children’s cartoon. It’s quite similar to doofus or goofball and also often used to jokingly insult friends who behave silly. But of course you can also use it when you are annoyed by someone’s behaviour.

okay my nerd complex won and i’m checking the german dub listing for toh, so here’s a few of my favourite findings:

Luz sharing a voice with Arya Stark from GoT (Paulina Rümmelein)

Willow’s VA (Maresa Sedlmeier) starring in damn near every Disney Channel sitcom I watched when I was like 13, as well as sharing a voice with Luna from Sailor Moon Crystal (not the original, sadly, but considering how long ago that was...)

Lillith (Claudia Urbschat-Mingues) sharing a voice with Miyo Takano from Higurashi (specifically the german Higurashi re-dubs from 2018 onward) which tbh, I can see pretty well? They have similar energy imo

Lillith’s VA also having had a ton of roles in general, DSK is listing 1059, and knowing personally that site is incomplete bc it doesn’t list Video Games that’s like... a lot lmao

And she is also the announcing voice for the biggest german news broadcast tagesschau (yknow that voice that goes “Hier ist das erste deutsche Fernsehen mit der tagesschau”)

Alone in the City follows Anika through the streets of Berlin and comprises unreleased songs that were staged at numerous locations in the city in cooperation with the team of n.b.k. Anika, Alone in the City, 2021 © the artist / n.b.k. Anika a.k.a Annika Henderson (b. 1987 in Woking, UK) is a musician as well as a composer, DJ, poet, photographer, radio host and film-maker. After initially working as a journalist, she made a name for herself in the electronic music scene with her experimental sound collages, confrontational texts and unique live performances. In 2010 she released her debut LP Anika on the label Invada Records (and later on Stones Throw), which she recorded with Geoff Barrow (instrumentalist of the band Portishead) and Beak> in Bristol. Since, she has collaborated with numerous other musicians, artists and film-makers, among them: Gudrun Gut and Beate Bartel (Malaria!, Liaisons Dangereuses), Shackleton, Michael Rother (Neu!), Dave Clarke, T.Raumschmiere, Tricky, Melanie Jame Wolf, Andreas Reihse, Doireann O’Malley, Rainer Kohlberger, and Philipp Geist. In 2015, Henderson formed the band Exploded View in Mexico City with Hugo Quezada, Martin Thulin, and Amon Melgarejo; they released two LPs and one EP on Sacred Bones. Since 2009, Anika has performed extensively with and without band on renowned stages worldwide, such as All Tomorrows Parties in New Jersey and London (curated by Portishead), the Moog Festival, Mexico City’s Normal Festival, Teheran’s Tadaex, Berghain, Atonal festival, SKIF St. Petersburg or WWWX Tokyo. In her music, Anika interweaves dub, post-punk, and psychedelic elements with drum and bass whilst putting a strong emphasis on the voice. Her newest single Finger Pies (Invada Records/Sacred Bones) was released in late April 2021.

Cologne duo Urlaub in Polen — that’s Georg Brenner (vocals, synths, Moog, guitars) and Jan Philipp Janzen (drums, percussion, Moog, samples) — return after a near decade long hiatus with their new album All. Brenner and Janzen build a sturdy foundation from the rigid rhythms of Krautrock and techno, which they decorate with an eclectic array of elements from mutant disco, post-punk, kosmische psychedelia and the odd curlicue of proggy noodling.  

Neu! Is the most obvious inspiration, especially for Janzen whose drums maintain motorik propulsion.  But there is more to All than simple homage. “The Witcher” mashes Clock DVA woodwinds into Hawkwind space rock while riding the overwrought edge of its influences. “2 Sec. Delay” has traces of early 1980s Cabaret Voltaire with shimmering synths and dystopic declamations, “T.H.D.T” features sped up robo-funk and cosmic Moogs that evoke a prog rock riposte to post punk, while “Lts” bubbles gently along taking its cues from the minimal techno of ~scape artists like Pole and Jan Jellinek.  

That all this holds together as a cohesive whole is down to Brenner and Janzen’s commitment to their sound and willingness to dip into the unexpected alleyways they encounter along the way. Their music feels lived in and natural in the way they refract the alternative sounds of their homeland through the sound of the English bands that learned from Neu!, Can, Kraftwerk and Cluster to create a meta dialogue that mirrors their own musical relationship. Urlaub In Polen use very specific tropes whilst managing to stand outside time and place. The musical strands from which Urlaub In Polen weave their tapestry are familiar and if the edges are a little shopworn and some patches are faded from overexposure, All makes a good case for the enduring power of their influences and for Brenner and Janzen’s decision to reignite their collaborative projects.

Out of Ear-th is an installation by Claude Alma whose "archisculptural" elements and sound transcriptions * of cosmic electromagnetic fields and the earth's magnetic field define singular and distinct listening spaces, playing with resonances and reflections, where the notions of transmitter and receiver are questioned.

These elements are in constant movement, like all the celestial bodies in the universe, taking, like the composer Iannis Xenakis, the opposite view of what Goethe thought ("Architecture is petrified music").

In Out of Ear-th vibration reigns, in all its forms, and symbolically makes perceptible the tension between the cosmic magnetic fields, harmful to all living beings, and the earth's magnetic field which acts as a protective shield.

Claude Alma imagined Out of Ear-th during two residency sessions A Roof Above Your Head organised by "la mire" in the partner venues Berlin Session Residency in Sept. 2020 and the ZK/U in August / Sept. 2021 in Berlin.

* The sound transcriptions were made with the help of Philippe Zarka (astrophysicist at the Paris Observatory) from data collected following a meeting of the artist with the teams of the AIP (Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam), and those transmitted by the Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) in Potsdam.

ARTISTIC APPROACH

Claude ALMA - Tours (France-Loire Valley)

Claude Alma’s artistic approach focuses on 3 main axes: The first one is based on the creation of unique listening conditions (see www.volume-sonore.org), for which he designed and realized architectural modules, sort of sound pavilions, refuges for listenning.

The configuration and the device of these modules are specifically dedicated to the type and origin of the sounds broadcast. Claude Alma's work also revolves around cosmophony, which means the contribution of the elements of the universe and the living into sound creations organized threw electroacoustic compositions. Field recordings and sound synthesis come together in a multi-point spatial diffusion.

Claude Alma also favors in his realizations the vibratory dimension of the sound to reveal the imperceptible, even the inaudible or the invisible, like neuronal waves, stellar vibrations or radio waves. Thus, the medium, while remaining immaterial, makes it visible phenomena pertaining to immateriality.

Claude Alma imagines and designs devices, true "vibesystems", which vibrate simple materials (water, very fine sand, copper wire ...) and through which the sound becomes image and light. He is a composer who also performs with a guitar, an old Moog synthesizer and a Leslie cab in search of "harmonic essence", in the footsteps of a Charlemagne Palestine. He has already worked with scientists in the field of neuroscience, botany, mechanics and resistance of materials and especially in the field of astrophysics. Claude Alma collaborates particularly and for several years with Philippe Zarka (research director at the Observatoire de Paris and deputy director of the radio astronomy station of Nançay) to produce creations on the basis of sound transcriptions of radio waves emitted by stars.

Claude Alma widens his research to all the wave phenomena. He seeks to initiate a poetic of the relationship between Art and Sciences, following Virginia Woolf when she states: And there are a thousand voices prophesying despair. Science, they say, has made poetry impossible ;/ ... / Therefore, so people say, there can be no relation between the poet and the present age. But surely that is nonsense. The best birthday present ever was that my mom who literally never watched anything Star Wars before agreed to sit down and watch The Force Awakens with me. Which incidentally is also the first time I saw it with German dubbing, so here, have some incoherent thoughts:

First things first: I mean, casting Daniel Craig for a stromtrooper cameo was already pretty extra, but noooo, German dubbing tptb had to top even that by actually hiring Dietmar Wunder to voice Craig’s five second cameo. Likea DO YOU EVEN KNOW HOW EXPENSIVE IT IS TO HIRE DIETMAR FUCKING WUNDER just so that he can swagger his ass into a Berlin recording studio to do like idelkten takes for 2,5 sentences?! It is INSANE but also the amount of dedication is SO admirable, I LOVE BJÖRN SCHALLA who supervised all of the recording process.

Speaking of dedication, kudos once more to Björn for also both hiring Philipp Moog as Ewan Mc Gregor-Obi Wan and digging up archive material of the German voice OT Obi Wan for Rey’s force visions, staying THIS close to the OV, I AM IN TEARS ;__;

Poe and Rey sound SO old like jfc, I have no clue who Kaya Marie Möller is and I don’t doubt that she’s a capable voice actress, but she makes Rey sound like a middle-aged housewive with 3,4 kids and like...NO.

Ghadah Al-Akel ist THE perfect choice for Maz Kanata and I just don’t get why they replaced her with Regina Lemnitz in tlj? Like, I really really like Lemnitz but Ghadah Al-Akel is so close to Lupita N’yongo, you’d be a fool to re-cast her.

Katrin Fröhlich as Phasma is the German dubbing equivalent to casting Gwendoline Christie as Phasma, both is a HUGE waste of talent, but I’m glad we got them right here with us.

1976-1979 : quatre années de création intensives pour Heldon, consécutives au départ du home-studio de l’Île Saint-Louis pour Davout également à Paris, où un Moog 3 racheté des Beatles est entreposé dans un local réservé au leader du groupe Richard Pinhas. Ici et alors, s’écrit une trilogie n’ayant rien à envier au King Crimson de la période courant de Larks’ Tongues In Aspic à Red, les Français naviguant dans une sorte d’au-delà due à l’électronisation de leur musique, ainsi qu’à la force d’influences revendiquées dont font partie Fripp & Eno, Philip K. Dick et Gilles Deleuze.

Véritable vertige à l’état pur, l’ensemble constitué par Un Rêve sans conséquence spéciale (1976), Interface (1977) et Stand By (1979) marque un aboutissement sonore dans l’œuvre d’Heldon, voire un climax tirant sa violence des machines. Cet Himalaya des musiques électroniques est complété d’un single rare paru chez RCA à la même époque, faisant de ce coffret un must pour collectionneurs avertis !

Desde 2013 organiza la fiesta Dancetería por donde han pasado Moscoman, Marc Piñol, Zombies in Miami, Curses, Hugo Capablanca, Damon Jee, Demian, Club Bizarre, Gameboyz, Golden Bug, Undo o Abstraxion. Pincha regularmente en salas nacionales como Ballesta y Demodé (Madrid), La Carbonera (Valencia), Dabadaba (San Sebastián) o Katos (Pamplona); y en salas de Barcelona como LAUT, Moog, Garatge 442 o Freedonia. ★★★ Coco The Coconut (Freedonia Club) Coco, nació en un cocotero de una isla desierta y remota del pacífico sur. Bajo la sombra de una palmera dio sus primeros pasos y durmió sus primeras siestas. Un buen día decidió construirse una balsa con las cáscaras de los cocos que había comido hasta entonces y se lanzó al oceano en búsqueda de nuevas tierras y aventuras. Después de mucho vagar y mucho dormir la siesta, orilló en la ciudad de Barcelona a principios del siglo XXI. Desencantado del modo de vida en el hemisferio norte, decidió crear en el 2009, la República Incipiente de Freedonia, templo neurálgico del underground barcelonés en pleno corazón del Raval. Tras años en un segundo plano programando y escuchando los sets de los mejores dj´s de la ciudad, Coco ha decidido salir a la luz como The Coconut. Remember when I said I will do a compilation of my favourite German Quackerjack scenes? I haven’t forgotten about it. But instead of making a compilation I will feature the scenes in their very own post. I will also always include the English original dub after the German dub so you can get a good comparison of both. I will write down my thoughts to it and let you know what in my opinion is different, which was maybe better pulled off or if something got changed. I will not bash any of the versions since I love both dubs for their own specific uniqueness and both clearly got their moments. I’m also curious what you’ll think of the German dub and the differences it provides, so don’t be shy and let me know your opinion! 😊

Let’s start!

The first difference I noticed and really love is that in the German dub (GD) Quackerjack sounds like a real drama queen here...which he canonically is! (Shoosh Megavolt! You’ll spoil my little drama!”) Compared to the English dub (ED) he sounds much more whiney and more serious about ‘getting help’ from Launchpad. Also a small interesting fact is that instead of “duck” he says “Erpel” in German. Erpel describes what we call a male duck and is also the surname Drake and Gos got in the GD.
