Just finished this very well documented and greatly related biography of the best known Spanish king ever: Philip II, by Geoffrey Parker (who also wrote the biography of the king’s father, the emperor Charles V, very recommended as well). Based on documents that were sealed for over three centuries and rediscovered in New York City. The king, who was hated in my old country (the Netherlands) because of the 80 years war he fought against it, is presented an obsessive-compulsive character, authoritarian, overly religious, micromanager, and definitely unsympathetic. Still, for everyone who wants to know what happened in the world in the second half of the 16th century and why, this book is a must! #philipii, #geoffreyparker #spain #history #habsburg #elisabethi #williamoforange (at Manhattan, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQEtrfypvTI/?utm_medium=tumblr

7 September 1533. The birth of Elizabeth I of England. The daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. The woman who started my love affair with English history as a twelve year old. Thank you for defying convention and not marrying, for fending off Philip II, for proving, with the defeat of the Spanish Armada in August 1588, that you didn't need to be married at a time when it was expected. You were strong, powerful. I wouldn't say you were a idol or a role model, but you broke the notion of the demure girl of the Middle Ages, and you were the first historical person I became obsessed with. Elizabeth Tudor, thank you for everything #elizabethi #elizabethtudor #henryviii #anneboleyn #tudor #englishhistory #england #spain #philipii #spanisharmada (at Monterey, Massachusetts)

The Escorial is a vast building complex located in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, near Madrid, in central Spain. The building is the most important architectural monument of the Spanish Renaissance. Construction of El Escorial began in 1563 and ended in 1584. The project was conceived by King Philip II, who wanted a building to serve the multiple purposes of a burial place for his father, Holy Roman emperor Charles V; a Hieronymite monastery; and a palace. The first architect, Juan Bautista de Toledo, designed the ground plan on a gridiron scheme, recalling the grill on which San Lorenzo, the patron of the building, was martyred.
