On the right is his son king Philip II (1527-1598) - he is resting his right hand on a globe that symbolizes the planetary extent of his possessions. The most powerful ruler of his time.

Just finished this very well documented and greatly related biography of the best known Spanish king ever: Philip II, by Geoffrey Parker (who also wrote the biography of the king’s father, the emperor Charles V, very recommended as well). Based on documents that were sealed for over three centuries and rediscovered in New York City. The king, who was hated in my old country (the Netherlands) because of the 80 years war he fought against it, is presented an obsessive-compulsive character, authoritarian, overly religious, micromanager, and definitely unsympathetic.
