Release: February 1, 1999
Lyrics:
As I was goin' over
The Cork and Kerry Mountains
I saw Captain Farrell
And his money, he was countin'
I first produced my pistol
And then produced my rapier
I said, "Stand and deliver or the devil he may take ya"
I took all of his money
And it was a pretty penny
I took all of his money,
Yeah, and I brought it home to Molly
She swore that she loved me,
No, never would she leave me
But the devil take that woman,
Yeah, for you know she tricked me easy
Musha rain dum a doo, dum a da
Whack for my daddy, oh
Whack for my daddy, oh
There's whiskey in the jar, oh
Being drunk and weary
I went to Molly's chamber
Takin' Molly with me
But I never knew the danger
For about six or maybe seven,
Yeah, in walked Captain Farrell
I jumped up, fired my pistols
And I shot him with both barrels
Yeah, musha rain dum a doo, dum a da, ha, yeah
Whack for my daddy, oh
Whack for my daddy, oh
There's whiskey in the jar, oh
Yeah, whiskey, yo, whiskey
Oh, oh, yeah
Oh, oh, yeah
Now some men like a fishin'
But some men like the fowlin'
Some men like to hear,
To hear the cannonball roarin'
Me, I like sleepin',
'Specially in my Molly's chamber
But here I am in prison,
Here I am with a ball and chain, yeah
Musha rain dum a doo, dum a da, heh, heh
Whack for my daddy, oh
Whack for my daddy, oh
There's whiskey in the jar, oh, yeah
Whiskey in the jar, oh
Songwriter:
Musha rain dum a doo, dum a da
Musha rain dum a doo, dum a da, hey
Musha rain dum a doo, dum a da
Musha rain dum a doo, dum a da, yeah
Traditional, Brian Michael Downey, Eric Bell, Philip Parris Lynott
SongFact:
In the first person, the song tells the story of a robber who makes good loot by attacking a (British) officer in the mountains, but who is subsequently betrayed and arrested by a woman with whom he has a love affair. The location of the events is the south-west of Ireland, with place names including Cork, Kerry, Kilkenny and Killarney. There are a total of seven stanzas, but only a few variants can be heard in full. An example of this is Gilgarra Mountain by Peter, Paul and Mary, released on their 1965 album A Song Will Rise. Otherwise, stanzas are omitted or combined in terms of content. There is an almost incalculable number of variants with different texts or names.
After each verse, a chorus is sung that mentions the Irish whiskey that gave it its name. In older versions, this is in a carboy or a bar instead of in a jug.
The original song is believed to originally date from the 17th or 18th century. The author is unknown.

Philip Parris "Phil" Lynott (August 20, 1949 – January 4, 1986) was a musician and songwriter best known as Thin Lizzy's lead vocalist, bassist, and songwriter. You might be familiar with the band's biggest single, "The Boys Are Back In Town" The song is used in commercials, films, and television whenever a group of guys are having fun or something. I was always familiar with the band Thin Lizzy, but when I started listening to them, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that he was a black Irishman from Ireland, where he grew up with his mother. And he was a lead singer playing the bass, which is rare in rock music. After he became comfortable playing the bass, he could form Thin Lizzy. The band had moderate success with their "bluesy hard rock" sound. Some consider them one of the ancestors of heavy metal. He went on to form other bands and published a poetry book. I guess you could say Lynott falls into the category of Jimi Hendrix or Arthur Lee(Google him) because they were black guys playing heavy rock before it was more common like it is today. Lynott was a great songwriter who influenced those familiar with his music.

Phil Lynott could have turned 75 today.
Phil's legend can come at the expense of his numerous bandmates, all of whom helped make Thin Lizzy one of hard rock's foremost groups. That said, Lynott's talents carved him a secure place in the vast relief that is Irish music. As sure a storyteller as any prose writer or poet, and as hard a rocker as anyone from Deep Purple to Led Zeppelin, Phil's skills make him unique in both realms. His relentless bass picking and rock 'n' roll instincts are a world apart from the expressions of Irish trad folk; his tales of Irish mythos, urban libertines, youthful recollections and spirited romance put him miles above the usual cod-mysticism and cock rock of 70s arena-pleasers (of which I am also a fan, before anyone gets me wrong).
The work of Philip Parris Lynott feels like it could only have come from Ireland, and from this one man of this one time. You don't get a statue of ya in Ireland without good reason, and Dublin's finest earned his well and true. Not bad for a group whose first hit was a rock cover of a folk song. Fair dues Philo.
